Fred Allen and Groucho Trade Ad Libs! (1952) [AUDIO]

  • There are very few recorded examples of Groucho and Fred Allen performing together in any capacity. Here's 8 minutes of audio of Groucho shooting the breeze with Fred Allen 100% spontaneously after the recording of Fred's pilot for "Two for the Money" (a show which ultimately ended up hosted by Herb Shriner). How many times do you get to hear a recording of two of the greatest ad lib comedians in history casually chatting without a script in front of a studio audience? Beyond the great laughs in this clip, it's quite apparent how deep their mutual respect and admiration was.
I have no idea what the circumstances were behind this recording ever being made, let alone preserved and circulated among collectors, but we're very lucky that this exists. I actually think Fred Allen comes out a bit ahead of Groucho in this exchange, but it's really too close to call.

This ad lib session between these two masters is 10 times better than most written material I have heard.

Groucho and Fred were both masters of the ad-lib, so it's no surprise they could pull off 7 minutes that easily

Fred Allen's deadpan delivery was hilarious. One of the most underrated comedians of all time.

Glad you enjoyed it, Robert! The only other joint Groucho-Fred Allen appearances I'm aware of are in THE BIG SHOW, and possibly an episode or two of COMMAND PERFORMANCE, and those are certainly mainly scripted spots. And even in those, I'm not sure Fred and Groucho appeared in the same scenes. There's at least one episode of THE BIG SHOW (and I think more than one) where Fred and Groucho are in the same sketch-- but mostly abiding by the script!

Wow. Fred Allen may have been a better ad libber than anyone EXCEPT Groucho Marx. This is priceless.
Groucho says "Come, Mr. Gallagher" at the end, a reference to his uncle Al Shean's old Vaudeville act, Gallagher and Shean.

Wow, there were not many people who could go toe to toe with Groucho for 7+ minutes -- he even had Jack Benny busting up on Benny's own program with his ad-libs -- but Fred Allen kept right up with him.

Unfortunately, very, very little of the BBC series survives today. I've only ever seen two complete episodes, both from well after 1955, so the odds that the ep you were in is available anywhere are pretty nearly zero. Sorry!

Was that Mark Goodson at around the two minute mark?

In the Hirschfeld drawing? The figure in the center bottom is Fred Allen; above him Dick Powell. Upper right is Henny Youngman, but I can't remember who the woman in the upper right is supposed to be.

No, in the conversation with Fred and Groucho.

The entire video is a conversation between Fred Allen and Groucho. So I'm afraid you'll have to be a bit more specific.

At around two minutes, Groucho talks about the producer of all the popular game shows, and it sounds like mark Goodson talking for a bit.
