Every single time, and I mean it, every time I've been beat by cheese or new tech, when I ask what do against it, they just reply "not my problem" or "get good". MK has THE WORST community of any fighting game I've ever played and it isn't even close.
That's something I've realized with MK1 and even MK11. I like the games and gameplay but it's the players that ruin it for me. I go online and it's like everyone just wants to spam the same bullshit over and over, or they run away the whole time to cheese some strategy. No one does anything new or creative, it's the same boring repetitive top tier spam by a handful of characters and even if u beat them it just feels annoying. Like swatting a fly thats been buzzing around your head for 10 minutes, you're just glad it's over
@@houseparty_mdThat’s because MK 1 (and mortal kombat games in general) are very rigid by design and have limited opportunities for skill expression. Everything is designed to fall into place, and therefore nothing outside of that narrow scope of design for each character is really possible, the best tech a character has in this game was discovered in week 2 and it won’t change because the characters are so shallow inherently, there’s nothing new to find, unless a new character is released…
The game is incredibly boring, bare bones, and uninspired. Also it is a hobby, but a costly hobby....so that's where the ill feeling comes from. I haven't played in a couple months now and honestly none of the DLC has been tempting enough for me to come back, especially with the slow drip releases.
Agreed. I'll be back to how Takeda plays in this game and to do a few Omni-man vs Homelander matches but I haven't played the game in weeks and just have no interest going forward. The leaks for Kombat Pack 2 also sound pretty terrible to me.
I’m sorry, but COVID isn’t an excuse for the state of MK1 or the competitive scene. Like you mentioned Bill, MK11 was also launched in an incomplete state. Furthermore, look at the games NRS’s competitors are putting out. SF6 is doing well and I’m predicting Tekken 8 will blow both games completely out of the water 😂. MK1 is a dud. Better luck next time, but they won’t be getting my money.
I agree with what you say. love Tekken, and it was the main game I played for years when I was younger. With that said, I know Tekken 8 will sell pretty well at least, but something about it seems so off to me. Playing the demo helped alleviate some of the concern, However, I feel like I’m one of the few people that thinks there’s just too much going on (aesthetically). Although I suppose the classic costumes and whatnot make it not so much. Could also just be that I like 2d fighters more which I never thought would be the case.
Tekken will have the same features like SF6. It won't "blow it out the water". World Tour mode is more interesting than the arcade thing that Tekken 8 has based in the demo. Plus SF6 had hub world, Avatar battles, clubs, etc. It has way more features than Tekken 8.
Mk11 was a lot more fun than Mk1 by far even with the terrible lack of support. People just refuse to admit it. Mk1 is just a lousy rebranded injustice game.
MK11 was garbage... But, it was still arguably "better than" MK1 -- I'll concede that much. However, I'll never go back to either iteration of the franchise. MK9 and MKX are the only two go-to MK games, and and even the Injustice games have more to offer than the last two, squelched MK turds do.
I just recently started playing MK 1 again after taking a break. I lost my fun of it because I was trying to recreate the most damaging combo’s and kamo’s that I saw high level players doing. It made the game feel like I kept doing the same thing over and over again. After coming back, I have changed to try new kamo’s and combo’s of my own vs. high level players and have found myself having so much more fun with the game again. I stop caring about having the highest damage and just experimenting. It has really revised my love of the game again.
The very fact that one can "re-create" what the "high level players" are doing, is a hallmark of a simplified fighting game. For one should not able to just just copy high level play; high level play comes from many hours of training and skill, even innate talent. If one can simply copy an uploaded tutorial, and do it so easily that the game becomes boring for it, the game itself is garbage. _>dumbing-down / "accessibility" has all but destroyed the essence of the fighting game genre_
@@shoahkhan5670While I agree with you on a lot of your points you made, there are a lot of people with amazing hand-eye coordination and learning skills that they actually can master a difficult game quickly-and watching a master only makes that process even faster. However, I do also agree with the whole making it more accessible and removing the grind, talent, and intense study, really takes away from the reward of mastering a fighting game/character. Back before, players didn’t have masters to refer to on TH-cam and online guides and whatnot. They thoroughly studied the game themselves. Everyone played their own way and the masters were the ones who *truly* studied the game. I think the FGC is struggling with striking a balance between accessibility and complexity; they’re not doing well so far. It’ll take time I guess.
This is why you always see people doing the same combos and people picking the same characters over and over. They only want to use the same combos the pros are using instead of just learning on their own and getting better. The pros are what is ruining this game. Everyone wants to just emulate them which is why the game can feel stale and repetitive.
I'm sad to see TestYourMight die like it has. The forums are peak MK for me and it's just lost it's community. I don't even know where to search. Reddits community is casual, the official discord is dead, TYM is a shell of its former self.
If they were going to make a tag game it should have been a VS game. Taking a 1v1 game and adding something like this takes away form it in other arears.
Its the game. Its the netcode. Its NRS not fixing the issues that drives down passion for the game. Sure people would love to have larger pots for the Pro Series but I don't believe a lack of money is the issue. Its the game. New players also don't want to deal with that. You cant grow when you can't even play online and half your games desync and the first post from NRS after a month of this is... "Hey buy Khameleon DLC". Its not the lack of money... Its everything else.
Most of NRS's "boss" type characters tend to feel that way... MKvDCU Shao Kahn lacked taunts; in MK9, he couldn't jump. In Havik's case, because he was incorporated into the playable roster, he is more fleshed out than the average NRS "boss"; yet, is still under-developed due the the kind of stigma in question... They might not have even planned to have him playable -- making him so only very late in the development of an embarrassingly under-developed product.
I've been trying to play this game on and off again for the last month and half or so. And for every time I am having fun with the game there can be like 5 other instances when it becomes unfun for a multitude of reasons. With Tekken 8 coming out in 2 and a half weeks from now, I feel like my time with M1K might just be completely over.
And you most likely are gonna do the same thing with Tekken 8.Truth be said,Iam not touching Tekken 8 until it address the heat issues that are incoming and add "missing"characters back into the roster. With that said Ill probably pick up Tekken 8 in 2026-2027 at this rate.No way that incomplete game is even remotely 50% finished, dont fall for the hype, warning ya.
@zeokenx2 These people think Tekken 8 will save them, hahahaha 😆. Literally, fighting game is doing the same thing over again. Tekken 8 has animations and combos from the 90's. They charging us $70 for it. Ridiculous.
Yup. MK is just a very shallow game design wise. And that's because of how they handle strings, plus, frames, throws and throw breaks. Pretty much everything.
Community building is the keyword here. Reach out to and hangout with ppl who like older mk titles as they'll likely come back to hangout with you. Streamers and content creators or different mk games can still enjoy watching eachother play and talk about their games and ask eachother questions and share their passion for MK lore. Its definitely there.
In sf6 people are complaining about the game drive rush drive impact perfect parry. The cosmetics suck and are just as expensive. They just did a crossover and it’s for battle hub skins and it’s not cheap.
@@silverscalessI mean that’s the truth though tbh. drive rush jab and drive rush throw is majority of the game. Then it’s just JP, Ken and Luke in every single tournament with a sprinkle of Cammy here and there.
I have more fun in practice mode than in Kombat League. The reason being that experimenting in the game is fun as hell, but that experimentation doesn't translate to copy-and-paste play of tournaments.
Invasions is so disappointing, i read about it being hinted as being the next great konquest mode multiple times and after how the Keypt evolved I believed it. I dont understand how this game has so little in the form of content and what content there is feels like a massive step backwards.
Everything you said about the community is true. Nobody wants to play and get better besides the few that do. I came into the community as a new player during mkx and found so many players to play with that were down for grind sessions. On mk1, I feel like I'm limited to a few players I've met from the past games who are still willing to play long and learn because finding players in mk1 that want to learn is impossible. So many players want to collect their ft3, t-bag and peace out. Sad
Bullshit damaja. Most of the mk community is casual af. We wanted content, the game launched with... Just invasions. Ranked and casual koth and 1v1s are mandatory in a fighting game. Imagine cod with no TDM. FOH damaja, you are blinded by your nostalgia over MK. Go back to the launch of other titles and see just how much was released on launch. You competitive players think you're so high and mighty. "The casuals don't like the game cuse they gotta git gud and put in time" You are part of the problem, always blaming the casual vs blaming the companies that have the audacity to release half-ass games at full price. You are all shills. Be honest with yourselves, you would buy a bag of dogshit if it WB games imprinted the bag with an MK logo on it. To quote Tweedy, "I don't care if the next game is bad. I'm still buying it"
And that's because online is outdated and there is no casual mode..Kasual has a leaderboard they are still showing wins and losses records..Other games have move on from that format..You would have to somehow get players to play private match..
Yeah, I can't seem to get anyone to play more than 2 outta 3. I love losing and replaying 5 sets and learning what I'm doing wrong. It's so hard to find someone to play more than a 2 outta 3.
The thing is people played mkx, loved it, then mk11 came out and completely butchered the game to cater to the casual player. Those mkx players moved on to better fighting games. Casuals make up the vast majority of players in mk1. So now the gameplay is less braindead, but you have a bunch of casuals who don't know what they're doing online.
Great video Tom. The mentality these days is different from how it was 10 years ago. I completely agree with what you're saying and I would like to see the changes that you are espousing.
I just don’t understand how even a MUCH smaller game like GBVS has better polish and a seemingly better net code than mk1. I love mk 1’s gameplay and have been ignoring the game’s problems for the longest, but shit is just unacceptable now
There need to b a new generation of community leaders and creators that save this game and community…cuz what happening now is doing this game/community more bad than good
One problem with the game is they removed moves from certain characters and created other characters with limited move sets because they wanted to give those moves to Kameos. I like the Kameo system but I don’t like how they nerfed character move sets to create them. Kung Lao is the perfect example.
Kameos is the worst thing they have ever done… I feel like kameo characters were supposed to be playable, but then WB pushed NRS to release the game early and they just turned unfinished characters into Kameos and scrapped tag team too
*_>"a lack of expression"_* A fighting game so simplified as a MK1 (or SF6, for that matter), has no room for player expression. This was the complaint from SFV onward, and has become a template for these "big" fighting games: A homogenised, uninversalised gameplay meta. With MK1 and its wholesale lack of character archetypes, compounded by its over-reliance on the assist mechanic, it was almost inevitable that the game would be boring... Almost as boring as MK11.
MK1 should have been a love story to MK9.....no kameos. NRS can barely balance the main roster, let alone kameos. Invasion mode was neat on paper but just repetitive and boring. Plus, whoever thought of the survives..... needs to be fired. It only interrupts the flow and is cheesed 90% of the time to just get by. Hopefully the next MK game will be what we've all been waiting for.....a mix of MK9 and MKX
I think the obsession with balance is maybe part of the issue NRS is having and also had in MK11. They're very concerned about things not being broken instead of just making a fun game. I tried to enjoy MK1, really went in with low expectations and even w/ the lowered expectations I dropped the game with less than 100 hours played. That's the least I've played a fighting game I've purchased in years. The players will have fun when they find the game fun. For those who currently do find it fun, that's great, but I don't think that's most of the community at present.
@@martinezbiz Tbf, I played most of those hours first two weeks of release on the PC version and the game felt very jank. Maybe now after a few patches it would run smoother/feel better. In terms of quitting cause I'm losing, idc. I'm not a pro, I don't play for money, I don't have the expectation that I should be god like at any fighting game I'm playing. I get bodied in SF6 all the time, I still have 800+ hours in the game and I still play the game because it's fun. I'm sure I'll have at least a couple hundred hours in Tekken 8 as well.
@@jondiaz3329 SF6 is "fun" because it's controls are made for babies. If you are getting bodied in it idk what to say tbh turn on modern controls & just spam shit like everyone else.
Hey Tom - Vergilkilla here - I think the massive issue with the last two MKs is the quality of the actual fighting game design. They are not well conceived or well realized in terms of mechanics. On top of that, the balance changes are total nonsense. And tbh that’s not a WB problem - that’s an NRS problem. All that’s left is money when the game itself is joyless, lame, or (like MK11 month one) solved. Every Arcsys game, Capcom, 3D are all far better and funner fighting game designs. The only reason I ever play is because some chars I love… but no doubt SF and even the recent Granblue is leagues ahead in player expression and fun factor
it's called modern controls. people like easy baby mode games. it's a fact. proven by SF6. MK1 is too hard for people & that means new people/casuals will get sick of it.
Idk if those 3 idiots that do the kombast kasts get much input on balance and character changes, but I wouldn't be surprised if thats where the problems start. The company needs actual fighting game players to help develop the game, not some scrubs that only care about making the game easy for everyone to do "cool stuff"
This right here is the root of the problem. Why would Pros/the community stick around and play a game that is fundamentally boring? NRS tried to alleviate people's complaints with MK11 by bringing back normal meter management, giving characters more strings and introducing more combo potential via the Kameos. But STILL the fundamental way the game controls and plays ends up being boring. Animations and strings have so little impact and speed. The neutral game is a joke and everyone is able to discover the optimal way to use their Kameos in a month's time. They need to completely go back to the drawing board on their fighting game design. They can't keep slapping a band aid on it like they did with Mk1. MKX and MK9 had a lot of these same issues but people looked past it because of how you could truly be expressive with your character and the speed of the game. The moment they slowed things down with MK11 it became clear that their game design is puddle deep compared to other fighting games. And its a damn shame
Idk why ppl hate on MK11. It’s my favorite. I feel like ppl hate on it just because it’s like the cool thing to do. Only thing that was missing in mk11 was combo potential.
It should never have been made or released. They should have stuck with the Injustice 3 they were developing, and left MK1/MK12 for another 3~4 years down the track. Clearly, they have a strict release schedule which extends as far ahead as the comic book capeshit universe; and as those products eventually failed, the gaming department is now experiencing the same downturn.
I've got an idea that will save MK1 and hope this gets big. Online Exhibition Mode. No Fatalities. No Brutalities. No Finish Him. And not just online practice either. A mode where you basically do versus mode, but the wins and losses do nto effect your record. This will allow players to grind match ups and learn new characters rather than go online and feel pressured to keep using the most busted stuff simply because nobody wants to be on the receiving end of a Fatality. Fatalities, Brutals, Taunting, and Trolling are deeply rooted in how most people enjoy Mortal Kombat, but unfortunately that double edged sword has also created a fanbase of people insecure about losing and toxic behavior toward both winning and losing, because too many people feel like every match, whether it be Kasual or Ranked, is the end of world.
This isn’t just a mk1 issue though. A lot of games that I’ve played over the years has shifted focus to a more competitive standpoint than fun, forcing players to play more for money than for passion of the game. Dead by daylight, and call of duty are examples of the community changing to a more competitive standpoint.
@@D4Deyo mk1 has plus armored launchers, 20% throw loop vortexes, and full screen 50% combos. After 3 nerfs now since launch, you should start to consider that Johnny lao might not be the greatest thing to worry about when you play mk1. You do not solve the problem by playing characters that you would deem as lower tier.
19:17 u made a great statement man 👏👏 I think about that every time I get into a Koth. I wanna start community of 10 who I can build with jus like sonic & his crew
As Aqua said in the "P.S Please see this as a hobby first, don't bet your life on it" I am tired of people questioning prize pools on some game's tournaments when they are fuking games. Most people won't make a penny from playing on tournaments, in fact they will be spending money to do it, and the few who actually made TOP8 get some money, that's all, some companies put more in the bag for their circuits while others don't. Stop complaining and get a job whether you are good or bad at them, like most people do. When a company release a video game they want to sell it to get money, they don't develop it to give jobs to players.
Yeah I don’t get that either. Like are guys expecting a company that *develops video games* to give them a six figure salary with benefits or something? SF6 and Tekken prize pools look amazing but they fall under a different umbrella. Can’t expect that treatment from WB lol
With regards to NRS being safe with character designs, I’m afraid in this instance the community has done this to itself over many years. when they let loose with character design and mechanics, everyone whines that it’s “broken, cheap, unbalanced.” Anyway besides that great work in highlighting so many issues man 👍🏻
I loved playing MK1 but idk why, i just can't bring myself to play it as much, like it's gotten stale in some ways. I used to love playing mk9 mkx (not mk11). Honestly, I only play the game to practice and enter locals to win some money, where as it's usually small time money and my only motivation. Ever since I started going to locals when MK1 dropped, I honestly loved it, I met so many people who loved the game as much as me and even still play with them online but unfortunately crossplay doesn't exist and I cannot play with a majority of them. Im glad to feel like I found a community but it seems like no one wants to go to offline unless money is involved (I am also guilty of this). It's a weird spot to be in as a person in the MK1 community but that is where I stand right now.
I don't often go to locals myself, but it makes sense that people want money involved because it’s a motivator and forces you to play your best. It is a shame, though, that people don’t seem to as passionate about it as they should be.
@@170AndBeyond don’t get me wrong, after going and meeting people you become friends and then continue to play onlineand level up and that’s what it’s all about. I just feel grimey for having to go when only money is involved.
I couldn’t agree more with what you said about the character design. Simply put, the top tier characters have better base tool kits than the rest of the cast then adding a kameo on top of that makes them Insufferable to fight against because the lower tier characters feel incomplete because they wanted you to use a kameo to cover up their blaring issues. With that said I ask, why not just give us complete characters and make kameos a separate game mode. As a Kung Lao main it pisses me off that a supposed shaolin master doesn’t have a low starter…. I guess he missed that day of training in the academy😂 Also, why is he an MC and a kameo? Low hat would do wonders for Lao if it was in his base toolkit but not available to everyone else. It’s the least they could’ve done since they didn’t give him a reliable mid. Why doesn’t he have his teleport? Why does his hat still take years to recover? Why do two other characters have his iconic dive kick? And please don’t bring up Lao/goro. The gameplan is boring and braindead. If this game was balanced like how it should be, Lao would have more synergy with more than 1 kameo
I haven't played mk1 since quan chi came out. It's boring and ridiculous playing public matches. I might play again when the next character is released
I know playing online is a pain in the ass Gotta go through about 4+ one n dones and you'll MAYBE get a ft3 its rare (at least for me) to find good sets
@@othellorucker8107 duuude and they always are lmao I remember I fought a shang tsung he was talking Maaad crazy but he did keep rematching lol he had me like 0-3 then I caught up and it was like 5-4 then we played for like a hr was fun af
I completely agree. I’ve had people shit talk me say I’m trash but I still try be befriend them and I’ve been having full KOTH’s lately just grinding. I use Johnny/Sektor and people say I’m dumb but I don’t copy paste. I try to tel them copy/paste will make the game stale and this game has so much expression if you take risks and try new things.
I got burnt out on this game. Just waiting for crossplay and better netcode. More single player content would be great to since Invasions is just a very boring grind void of fun
This was FATES whole point but all the pros shit on him lol now the pros want to have a casual mindset and to actually have fun I’m shocked but love you Tom
Hey Tom you where saying We need to build our offline scene that Street Fighter 6 has 7000 competitors at EVO. The problem with that comparison is SF6 is paying a million to their pro comp while MK1 is only giving first place 30K with most of the top 16 getting less than $10,000 for a year of competing at the highest level. They need to add Pro Tour Skins to 4X the winnings and if WB can be pressured into putting at least what NRS put into Pro Comp I think a lot more would show up. Another issue is the lack of features and modes and Crossplay and the online Netcode being unstable. Fixing offline single player and character/Kameo progression(XP Gain). Buffs to the lower tiers and lower Kameos to bring Sub Zero, Scorpion, Reptile, Nitara, Quan Chi up to where Ashrah and Sindel are as characters with the ability to play multiple ways very effectively. Same with Kameos but bring: Sonya, Kano, Motaro, Tremor, Jax, Scorpion, Sub, Cyrax and Sareena up to where Stryker and Lao stand in strength for so many characters. Then we can have better synergies! Make all skins have a viewable guide to where you can unlock them in every mode, in the store show where you can discover or unlock them, cshow where to get skins in Invasions and Towers and Gateway Mesa. If all that was done I think a lot more people would be invested in MK1. The fact is these changes are not that hard to achieve. They can make Invasions Mode a Krypt style movement mode instead of a checkers board version with actual video interaction between multiple sections of each Mesa. But the don't think Invasions is the problem for competitive players.
This is making me feel fourtunate that my local community still does monthlies. I mostly play MK offline and am striving to beat the top players in my community. Unlike some oppinions floating around the internet about MK1, like the gameplay being "stale" (to which I don't find is true at all), I still find it more than worthy enough to grind and get better. But that's just me, and I won't close my ears to any differing oppinions. Maybe because I enjoy tea from time to time.
KWA is exactly what you describe in a group. We have a competitive team but have a developmental group which are people who just want to get better and we play every single day teaching each other new tech and experimenting. I play 40 sets a day with teammates. We are always happy to have others join us and play so please reach out to me! Also Tom Brady, if you read this, me and my team would love to do something with you to help build the community however we can. We just love the FGC and NRS and will help however we can
Aquaman is still shilling by focusing the blame on wb and the community. which do share some of the blame dont get me wrong, BUT. Part of the blame still goes to nrs's poor game design and power level balancing the game is essentially mk11 with assists from towers of time. And even that's watered down, Its no surprise there's a lack of creativity from the community. plus the pot prizes being abysmal on top of having to play an incomplete $70 game That's a double slap.
Aqua blaming MK's competitive flop on COVID is one of the smoothest brain takes on the matter. Crazy how Street Fighter and Tekken had to deal with it and are still extremely popular, even with price increases during a recession.
R.I.P Mortal Kombat 1992-2016... nah seriously MK can bounce back but i dunno if it will happen but we shall see. I myself have never been into so called "communities" about any of my interests in life as communities it seems are always a nanoparticle away from descending into madness (which i dont wanna be swept up into nor contriubte to), so much so if a community is doing well currently i gaurentee it wont be long till it too is imploding. its all swings and roundabouts so fingers crossed that this bad period could mean a positive one is on the horizon. again we shall see its never nice to be live in the middle of a circus thats turning on itself but that's life.
I think we need someone to highlight fun team combinations instead of the stagnate meta ones we see all the time. A big part of building a community is unique player expression and all you see is lao or Stryker. I run sub-zero/sektor not because it's the best way for the character to be played but what I like the best we need more of that and less but it's not optimal.
Yeah it is giving me sf5 vibes rn. Bad launch but is getting much better with time. After the krossplat update mk1 is gona climb up the ranks surely. I really hope this game goes big because the core gameplay is fun but needs some nerfs
@jordanthompson8268 I feel you, bro. I was so excited that Reptile & Ermac were back, but man, after doing a God run in season 1KL, finishing Story & invasion mode, it was just empty.
Nrs games just aren't fun anymore you can click on any old mkx tournament and then it will be significantly more entertaining than any of the recent nrs games
Well unfortunately people are bitching because the game ISNT fun at all rn. Online hardly ever works with the terrible desync and my game still will lose audio sometimes. Invasions is literally a grind and repetitive shit show
Finally lol, it seems like so many ppl don’t realize so much of these issues come from WB. I almost would bet anything NRS would love to have a fully fleshed out game as opposed to what we have but they have bosses they can’t just ignore. I have a feeling if they had they way this game prob wouldn’t of released till around May like they normally do so they could have everything to the level they want entering a new generation of systems. Where I do think NRS dropped the ball is variety in kameos
I must say I enjoy watching the younger generation play the modern MKs with the crazy cool guess characters, the cinematic storylines, the little callbacks to my generation I love it. I enjoy talking to modern mk streamers about mk in general, so it breaks my heart when I hear things like this :( Just know while things things are gloomy for modern MK, you can always take a smol break from it and hang with some of us oldies(like me LMAO) and just enjoy watching us deal with our ancient broken games for a laugh or two while things resolve. My heart goes out to you guys, hope things get better..
Who wants to make 30 grand by flipping burgers in a Mcdonalds working 6 days a week for one full year when you can make 30k by playing the game you like?
I guess that is what everyone else does. , they have a day job and they compete in fighting games. Even SF6 players have a job and they are giving huge pool prizes@@just_2swift
This is far too much of an insulated take. The reason the competitive community dies is because the slightly-less competitive community loses interest in the game, and that has NOTHING to do with money. The idea of "money" as it pertains to MK's community is something that is only relevant to a tiny TINY percentage of the player base. There are less than 50 players (amongst millions) where money is of any material concern. The problem for the other 99.999% of players is the fact that the game itself was released in an incomplete state (with main characters left of the starting roster and standard features completely missing from the game), the overly aggressive monetization practices that WB Games has infused with the game, and the overall "grindiness" of the game's single-player mode/s. I mean, the fact that unlocking a default characters costumes, brutalities, and mid-match animations takes roughly 10-15 hours PER CHARACTER is insanely obnoxious. I actually think the fighting mechanics of the game are the best they've been in a while. There might be some monotony at the tip-top level of play, but for more than 90% of the community, it's hitting all the right marks.
I love MK1s gameplay but the little important things like not being able to go on practice mode while waiting for online opponents and not having separate character ranked ladders make me not want to take this game seriously. Wtd NRS? These are BASIC online features!
Some main roster characters sorta feel like they are missing tools and some dont even feel as satisfying as its previous iteration like scorpion I like every other scorpion in MK games but this one just feels so lame to play . Few other characters smoke , Tanya, Kung Lao, Quan chi , shang Tsung, Kitana, and sub zero . Though some of these characters are good it just doesn’t feel as fun as there previous versions.
You have to guess for your life in mk1. Hard 2 block set ups are accessible to everyone with Lao kameo. Which is one of few who is blessed with low cooldown. HTB set ups are worse than MKX smoke 5050s think about that….
16-years-olds should be IN SCHOOL and/or HONING LIFE SKILLS, not twiddling their thumbs at cynically designed video games. For doing the latter will not help them or society when they are in their 30s and 40s, and gaming is increasingly only interested in the younger and least discerning generations.
That's how I feel about reptile, he used to have all sorts of jump kicks, flips, and tricky moves...now he literally has two of the same combo string... it's boring af
Mk11 Baraka was way better than this shit in MK1. His move set is slower, and he has 2 moves that pretty much do the exact same shyt. Lazy Lazy Lazy imagination, I swear 🤬. Honestly both Warner Bros/Nrs and the Community/Casuals are to blame.Managing wise, Warner Bros are infamous for doing a piss poor job managing their ip's. They forced NRS to rush the game out asap which is why the game feels incomplete with the lack of certain features that were to expected on launch while gameplay wise the community especially casuals cry out to have things such as combo potential and defense mechanics removed and/or added to the next game thinking it will benefit them until they run into players online and/or offline that utilizes those things better than them.... Or there will be people who enjoyed the last installment such as mk 11 be pissed because of the change of gameplay and mechanics and will refuse to adapt to it.... This is exactly when they begin to complain on every social site especially Twitter.. I've even witnessed people that I used to hang with that told me they were coming for me whenever the next installment was around the corner then tell me how they disliked the last installment and/or never took it seriously until the upcoming one also commenting on how they found the newest one way more appealing than the last because of what they added and/or removed from it that is until they played me.... and let's just say that's when history starts to repeat itself by them expressing how bad the game is instead of going into practice mode, looking up tips and strategies online for their character and/or just simply learning how to adapt..... And then there's realizing that even after you do all that you will still lose at times because of experience.... The point is people don't want take accountability and admit that it could be just a skill issue. Instead its much more easier for players to just go complain in general by blaming everything else except for them... That is why I believe Mk1 and the scene is dying..... Edit: @4:55 WHOA!!! did I just hear MK TOM BRADY TAKE SOME ACCOUNTABILITY BY BASICALLY ADMITTING THAT HE WAS PART OF THE PROBLEM??!!?!!?!!🫨🫨🫨 THERE JUST MIGHT BE SOME HOPE FOR THE SCENE AFTERALL.... JUST MAYBE....
I think the “it’s all wb games fault” excuse is bullshit. NRS were the ones that decided to sell to them. They sold out and now must take responsibility for this
I agree with this video but especially the ending. No one rematches on kombat league theyre just trying to level up (me included at times) Ive made about 3-4 friends already from kombat league and running ft5, 10 or 20 and those have been the matches wer i truly improved and are great friends of mines rn. But the lack of private matches really hurts this game. I have no way of playing with them again unless i do koth. No lobbies for the community to join together for random events. I love the gameplay of the game, but i wish there was more.
NRS is to blame, they once again decided to include unlockables for ranking up in KL, and those unlockables they are timed too, so of course I’m not going to do friendly rematches, I like to unlock skins, especially for ninja characters 🤷🏼♂️
Blaming covid and the faceless executive who are so far away from the game is such a cop out and downplays the heart of the issue. Which is NRS, and more specifically certain employees therein. I sincerely disagree with you saying NetherRealm cares Tom. Just pick a random developer wbo works for them, look up their social media profile and then tell me these people care more about their product that Warner Brothers. A completely differnt company could be behind NRS and the game would still come out like this, because NRS ARE THE PROBLEM GUYS.
I completely agree too. This Mk is the worst one I've played. The kameo system for me doesn't even make sense. Why not just release those characters or do a full tag team system like Mk 9
Agree, Ed trolls too much, even when he opens up his own Q&A's. The rest just gets snarky with fans, it's like they actively do things to piss fans off .... It’s like these pro players are afraid to say this game isn’t as good as they make it out to be.That “core gameplay is good” excuse only carry this game but so far.Yeah that’s VERY important but this game is lacking so much other stuff that it cancels out the good gameplay slightly. Also this doesn’t feel/look like a mortal kombat game. Its too vibrant and cartoony looking and the characters don’t look like cool warriors, they look like normal Hollywood actors dressed in costumes. The prizes you get for playing are majority just color palettes of the same skins we’ve had since day one and the rest are just art/music…No lobbies,No cross play,HORRIBLE invasions mode, annoying cameo system no one asked for, boring character designs, add all that up and you’ll understand why no one is excited about playing this bs.They designed this game to appeal to to a younger audience knowing dam well their core audience is well over 30 and was expecting that dark, gritty, grimey, gameplay they grew to love over the years.💯
I feel like people just don't appreciate this game enough. I've had so much fun just learning and trying out different characters on my own. Everyone should take the game a little less seriously and enjoy it. This game has so much potential gameplay wise as it stands and it's sad to just see people playing cookie cutter game plans like Johnny/Lao. Experiment, try new strategies and teams and have fun.
I like your optimism. I've been taking a break from MK1. After I beat the 3rd Invasions season, I decided to take a break. It wasn't fun to me. This game doesn't have a lot of offline content for casuals. The skins aren't that good either. Those orange colored skins from Invasions Season 1 were pretty much all terrible in my opinion.
LEGACY IN MK!!!!!!!!! It YEARS overdue. This game is super fast. The next game is super slow. We had to rush because we designed EVERYTHING from scratch. Legacy. It’s time. And we have a RIGHT to b$tch… we paid $100! “Just play and shut up”. My last MK game.
I hate to break it to u, but loyals to a game very less likely switch regardless of other games releasing,
I love Tekken but if it fails, I will be back. Lol I’m just messing around
Tekken will have the same features like SF6. It won't "blow it out the water". World Tour mode is more interesting than the arcade thing that Tekken 8 has based in the demo. Plus SF6 had hub world, Avatar battles, clubs, etc. It has way more features than Tekken 8.
Well said!
I dont give NRS the covid excuse. Capcom dropped a major patch that changed the meta in SFV. Tekken did as well during the pandemic.
The kameo system isn't even new it was in injustice 2 with Leonardo he could call out the other 3 as kameos trash game lol
Ya when u find ur own way to play instead of playing like others it feel’s organic which is definitely more rewarding than copying someone..good for u
Improving the online play and having rooms with spectatable matches would help a lot for getting with other players
you mean like they did over a decade ago in MK9 🤣
I remember the good old mk9 days when it wasn't just about the money and everyone was using Sheeva and Stryker.

Havik absolutely feels like an incomplete character...there, I said it 😂
Most of NRS's "boss" type characters tend to feel that way...

Yup. MK is just a very shallow game design wise. And that's because of how they handle strings, plus, frames, throws and throw breaks. Pretty much everything.
Community building is the keyword here. Reach out to and hangout with ppl who like older mk titles as they'll likely come back to hangout with you.

Kameos is the worst thing they have ever done… I feel like kameo characters were supposed to be playable, but then WB pushed NRS to release the game early and they just turned unfinished characters into Kameos and scrapped tag team too
They've arguably been doing this since MKX, always making you choose between multiple incomplete versions of a character
*_>"a lack of expression"_*
A fighting game so simplified as a MK1 (or SF6, for that matter), has no room for player expression.

@@tracycook3556oh my god the delusion.

Mk1 is just a trainwreck of a game
It should never have been made or released. They should have stuck with the Injustice 3 they were developing, and left MK1/MK12 for another 3~4 years down the track. Clearly, they have a strict release schedule which extends as far ahead as the comic book capeshit universe; and as those products eventually failed, the gaming department is now experiencing the same downturn.
Yeah it definitely sucks to be a mk fan rn. I don't wanna have to ditch it because of simple issues that could easily get fixed you know😕
I've got an idea that will save MK1 and hope this gets big.
Fatalities are stupid and time waste they should just get rid of them brutality is cool though
This isn’t just a mk1 issue though. A lot of games that I’ve played over the years has shifted focus to a more competitive standpoint than fun, forcing players to play more for money than for passion of the game. Dead by daylight, and call of duty are examples of the community changing to a more competitive standpoint.

With regards to NRS being safe with character designs, I’m afraid in this instance the community has done this to itself over many years. when they let loose with character design and mechanics, everyone whines that it’s “broken, cheap, unbalanced.” Anyway besides that great work in highlighting so many issues man 👍🏻
Facts. Us UMK3 players embrace the broken shit in our game and are like "Ayyy that's Kabal spin for ya!" haha
I guess he missed that day of training in the academy😂
Also, why is he an MC and a kameo?
Low hat would do wonders for Lao if it was in his base toolkit but not available to everyone else. It’s the least they could’ve done since they didn’t give him a reliable mid.
Why doesn’t he have his teleport?
Why does his hat still take years to recover?
Why do two other characters have his iconic dive kick?
And please don’t bring up Lao/goro. The gameplan is boring and braindead. If this game was balanced like how it should be, Lao would have more synergy with more than 1 kameo
2 other characters ?

Aquaman is still shilling by focusing the blame on wb and the community. which do share some of the blame dont get me wrong, BUT.
Part of the blame still goes to nrs's poor game design and power level balancing the game is essentially mk11 with assists from towers of time.

it really isn't.
This game will likely be great come 2025 after most of the updates, content and Kombat packs drop.
Yeah it is giving me sf5 vibes rn. Bad launch but is getting much better with time. After the krossplat update mk1 is gona climb up the ranks surely. I really hope this game goes big because the core gameplay is fun but needs some nerfs

Great analysis
I must say I enjoy watching the younger generation play the modern MKs with the crazy cool guess characters, the cinematic storylines, the little callbacks to my generation I love it. I enjoy talking to modern mk streamers about mk in general, so it breaks my heart when I hear things like this :(

The entire game is hard to blockables into throws.
It’s insane to me that this game doesn’t have the ability to play tag team of some sorts with a friend
They lack creativity, not just that they could make something like 2v2 , custom characters with custom combos etc…
You know there’s some real issues going down when the most hype tournaments are over on Xbox lol
Facts it feels like you spamming when we actually only got like two to 3 combos to hit fr fr
Mkx I enjoyed playing that more than any NRS game it allowed more freedom Even though you have to guess for your life
You have to guess for your life in mk1. Hard 2 block set ups are accessible to everyone with Lao kameo. Which is one of few who is blessed with low cooldown. HTB set ups are worse than MKX smoke 5050s think about that….
That is true I would just rather have MKX gameplay instead of MK1
Can 16 year olds work 40 hours a week though? Also the cost of living in New York is high.
