    I understand this is an heavy movie but outside of it please be careful of the realities you choose to ignore because it doesn't make you feel "good". History is kept for us to not repeat the same mistakes.

      Who exactly is writing this "history" and do they have a vested interest in its accounts and narratives? Then...let's discuss this concept of...."repeating".

    • @brownsugarglamour
      @brownsugarglamour 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Paul A. Jules III Well, I can certainly appreciate your comment... first, let’s start off with the media and what they chose to share or what details they chose to leave out for the convenience of selling a certain narrative. Ultimately, it has a huge role in how individuals are perceived even when they’re not accustomed to being around certain types of individuals/cultures. And then in regards history, we are literally repeating right now... regardless of ignorance. Prophecy is coming to fluorescent

      Its not fact, its his story. Personally I believe his story but I do think Hollywood probably added things to evoke even more of a reaction. However bottom line is it was a very racially charged time period across the world so its a relevant story which a lot of people experienced worldwide. Important to note though that there are countless families in the UK who fostered children in the 70s 80s from many different countries, providing a much better environment than this example. There is a reason their families sent their children to British families. The vast majority, in good areas, were a better option for their children. As was shown when he moved to a better area himself. Although It doesn't fit with the Hollywood narrative to tell those stories. But Stupid, radical groups across the world and religions do spoil it for all the good work which goes on if they don't provide some balance.

      Simply because of their skin color.
      It like living with a ball and chain, being told to wait 24 hours after the race start to start running, and being beaten and kicked along the way to the finish line while white in the audience tell you to pull yourself up and not complain because racism doesn't exist since they haven't experienced all the while they are the ones beating you and kicking you along the way simply because they can and it's fun.

    • @theresag1969
      @theresag1969 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @G T
      Just yesterday a white guy actually said racism doesn't exist because he hasn't seen it or experienced it. I was amazed at that comment. But, his comments is typical of those who perpetrate racist on others. They think their behavior is innocent and doesn't have an affect on people.
      I also had a white student of mine to ask me if I had the opportunity would I want to be white. He had no idea that question revealed multiple assumptions he had about himself and black people. My answer was no on multiple levels, one being I wouldn't want to live a life thinking I'm superior over another human being. I also told him I wouldn't want to live a life getting by on the color of my skin and not by my efforts. That would make me question my competency. He was shocked, because he always all thought black people wanted to be white in order to have a easier life. I told him struggle build character the lack of it makes you fragile and insecure. He had to agree. He said most white people he knew were insecure.

      Yeah I never thought about it on a deeper level how racism is experienced in the UK. We all know about it in general and yes we know racism is everywhere bc it lies within the racist not the country. I’ve been to the UK as a black woman and didn’t experience any racism and I was traveling alone. I’ve experienced more racism here in the US then abroad, and not just by white people. I was welcomed in Iceland and France as well. However, I do know that African migrants have experienced harsh racism in Europe. I just never thought about such eye opening examples of it or that he joined their group! Wow.

    This was one of the best films that I watched this year. It became even better in my eyes when I remembered it was based on a true story. It's not your typical white oppressor-black victim story so don't be afraid to watch it. At the end of the day, this was just one eye opening story of how hating yourself can lead you down a seriously dark path. This was the story of one young man, all the other children who were farmed have their own.

    This is based on Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s early life story. I’ve been reading some of the reviews; it seems to be a powerful narrative that is sometimes heavy handed. I’m definitely going to watch it. The early migrants struggled to assimilate into British culture between 1950s-1970s. We rarely hear their stories. I’m glad to report that I had a very different experience growing up in Liverpool during the 1980s 😉

Personally I believe him, although I wouldn't be surprised if Hollywood made him make it more dramatic but it certainly was a racially charged time period in London and the whole world.(Still is in a lot of areas in the world). It is important to note that parts of London were more dangerous than others(just like most major cities) and that there was a reason Nigerian families sent their children to British families. It was on the whole a better option if you sent them to the right areas.There are countless Families who fostered immigrant children in much better environments but those stories don't fit the narrative of Hollywood movies at the moment.

    I put off watching this movie for ages and decided to watch it last night. I'm glad I watched it now. It's a hard watch at times. I grew up around that era and also suffered abuse from skinheads and racists. It was really tough growing up back then and very different to life today and the movie portrayed that brilliantly. The acting was superb especially the main character. This movie might be a lesson in humanity for those that need it...

    I wish African artists will stop letting themselves be exploited like this. From the looks of it, Genevieve will probably have another “waka pass” role in this like she did in HALF OF A YELLOW SUN. This one might be even more bearable considering it’s actually set in Europe and narrates racial tensions. But I can’t for the life of me understand why a movie on the Biafra war like Half of A Yellow Sun will employ one of Africa’s biggest faces, just to put in two or three scenes, in a story about her own native country. While feeling the leading roles with Yankee.
    Now this one too. They’ll put her face on the posters I’m sure, and give her high billing so that Africans can flock to watch, but she’ll probably have five minutes of screen time. The disrespect is too much sha.

      No Name i’m well aware of those facts you mentioned. None of that changes the reality that brown people still have to rely on movie studios to greenlight their films if they expect to have decent distribution and THOSE people who run Hollywood (and mainstream media/music in general) have a vested interest in maintaining their fragile power holdings by continually manipulating the psychology of the consumers. FYI: Hollywood is the largest exporter of “American culture” and anybody who’s paying the slightest attention realizes that what Hollywood portrays in its films is not indicative of total reality.
      i’m not going to argue about this bc unlike most people, i have closely scrutinized and studied the state of brown people and the systems of race/color caste that have burdened us all (even the people who seemingly benefit from them). Everyday i get a little more free from white supremacist mind control and i suggest EVERYone else be diligent about doing the same. The shit is beyond fraudulent.
