I understand planetary autos, hondamatics, automated manuals, DCTs, CVTs etc just fine but this one gearbox is just so god damned difficult to figure out!

This transmission gets a lot of hate but don't worry I get it. A commercial vehicle has different priorities to performing like a car. Passengers in a car have seatbelts on, not so in a bus. Smooth controlled build up to speed is much more important as well as saving brakes and fuel.
Besides, some Voith equipped buses do perform like a car.

The dynamic is easy if you think of a truck with a two clutch system merged with a retarder. The new 5th ratio makes it interesting. A .5 overdrive.

@@VoithGroup Danke, wir haben in unseren Gelenkbussen überwiegend Voith Automaten, ich finde sie mittlerweile angenehmer, als die ruppigen ZF6HP, die irgendwie mit dem CAN Bus bei Benz nicht harmonisieren und bei komplexen wechselnden Fahrsituationen (will schalten und man bremst) hart schalten.
