  • Jack shares with us details of his discovery as well as he makes a point about accessibility of scientific research.
Jack Andraka is an American investor, scientist and cancer researcher. He is known for his new, rapid, inexpensive and patent pending method to detect presence of pancreatic, lung and ovarian cancer.
The idea to find the pancreatic cancer test came to him in a biology class when he was studying antibodies and carbon nanotubes. He then did some research about cancer biochemistry and decided to contact the 200 professors at John Hopkins University and National Institutes of health with a plan and a budget. Only after 199 rejections he a positive reply from Anirban Maitra.
Jack Andraka’s hobbies include: white-water kayaking, folding origami, and watching Glee and Bones.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The FDA will never approve of it. There should be lawsuit against people working under the patent office. This procedure could have saved millions yet years later, still no progress to the general public 😞

The truth around this story is more messy, possibly even troubling. My conclusion is Jack the teenager won fame & was invited to give speeches, when he really didn't understand the challenges. It also shows how difficult science is. So many scientists & physicians couldn't see Jack's ideas wouldn't work. Lacking intellectual maturity, he began falsely claiming things and continued his claims even after he was shown he didn't understand it. The Snopes fact-check article on this "discovery" informed me (pancreatic cancer test).

It’s been 10 years, why isn’t this being used? Money.

If he didn’t try to patent it then it would have been used and misconstrued and made invalid by those trying to hide the truth behind his actual findings. This is what happens to everyone who discovers cures. It’s debunked and left to the waste side so that money can continue to be made off disease.
