If you're like me and have some difficulty finding clothes that fit properly, then it just makes sense to buy multiple items (in different colors) when discovering the rare brand that fits perfectly.

Years ago when I was deciding on my particular dress style I went to a clothing consultant, a pro if you like, and had my colors done. I was deemed a winter, so deciding on what to buy and wear became easier. Now without thinking I am able to know what makes me look and feel better. Much like what you do and that, in my opinion, is why your videos are so valuable to me. Thanks.

Right again, John! I used to buy random stuff like sweaters, belts, odd shirts, clearance items ... Now, i am strictly buying pants, shoes, nice shirts and jackets .. finally have some outfits. I went in for tailoring too, seemingly they are getting more expensive but well worth it. I'm trying to wear sportscoats more, a nice upgrade. If you style it the right way, still looks casual but sharp.

Fit and quality make a huge difference. A well made and fitted Henley that in fabric slightly heavier than the average t-shirt, combined with quality jeans in slim but not tight fit, will look worlds better than the average jeans and t-shirt. Track pants can even look good if they're fitted instead of baggy. I'm in a place where my everyday casual core items are solid, and I'm slowly upgrading and expanding the less commonly worn formal and intermediate items, while looking to replace my sport coats and heavy sweaters with ones I actually like and want to wear.

I am not familiar with Southern California weather but I believe it's mostly sunny. Here in the Atlanta area, the majority of the year it can be extremely hot and humid so linens and cotton are "necessities". That is why I "cherish" the few Fall and Winter temperatures because I get a chance to wear my sweaters and other heavy material clothing. Since I am a New York "transplant", it's a refreshing reminder of how"versatile" fashion can be😊❤🎉💯🙏.

It’s not just you in CA who are overdressed like that, I’m in Charleston SC and it’s the same thing for me. I’m usually the best dressed most of the times, and I’m just like you said, wearing nice jeans and a shirt. I think it’s an epidemic in the US with people just wearing the first thing they find in their closet. Cheers!

Your timing is impeccable, John. I recently lost 25 lbs and this morning tried to put on three of my long sleeved dress shirts before going to work and they were WAY too big. I found one that I could get away with that looks fine and now I need to take your advice mentioned today to get out and redo a lot of my wardrobe. Thank You for everything you post!

Absolutely spot on! The 4 cores need to be the foundation of any wardrobe. You need to know what works in the colour wheel for you. Eyes, skin, hair all are factors as to what works and what doesn't. I avoid multi coloured unless all the colours work for me. Blues with browns (eyes and hair) are go tos. I can wear green and grey with little effort. I avoid light pastels and white if possible because of skin shade tone. also texture is very important. I have some rougher weave dress pants and a heavy wool sports jacket that works really well for winter. Sheer golf pants and lightweight polos and casual collared shirts for summer. Good, classic shorts for just kicking around it.

Good basic advice. Appreciated the comment about where one lives and how that can dictate style choices. Here in central Montana, not too difficult to stand out even with the cowboy/farm and ranch/outdoor adventure culture. Top notch as always John.

Interesting idea about light colours on the lower half. I’ve always been wedded to dark denim and either a monochrome look or a lighter sweater/polo up top. Perhaps it’s time to reverse my ‘signature style’!?!

John your videos totally helped me update my 40+ style starting a couple of years ago. I found that with these similar recommendations I simplified my entire wardrobe. Minor changes had a big impact. I've added pieces over the last 3 years for more variety but the core colors still remain. I'm a fit guy so athletic taper pants and fitted dress shirts sharpened me up. Thanks for all the help!

I've been watching fashion influencers for years. In my observation, one thing that separates you from the others is that your videos consider your demographic audience from outside the US, even though I assume that the majority are from within the US and Canada. This makes someone like me, who is from the other side of the world, feel included instead of an outsider looking in, and I appreciate that. Thank you.

Great simple breakdown John. I buy the same T shirts, Polos, and button downs in multiple colors and I’m always on the lookout for better versions of these. Of course I wear other things but these as you say are my core. I feel most comfortable in these and arguably I get more compliments when wearing them, probably because I’m comfortable.

Hi John. Thank you for another nice video. Since discovering you probably two, maybe even three, years ago, I've been a subscriber and have caught up on a lot of your early videos. I appreciate your holistic approach. For different reasons, I'll drift away for a while, but I always return and catch up on a lot of missed videos. I appreciate your honest, humble, succinct approach and fairly easy to follow advice for those of us in, or unfortunately well over, the over-40 category. You seem like a genuinely nice person, and though it's unlikely given where we each live, I hope to get to meet you in person at some point. Though in pretty good shape just about four years ago, I let myself slide and am finally disgusted enough to have recently started a quest to not just get back into good shape, but the best shape of my life, ever. I'm hopeful that within 3-6 months I'll achieve that. If you like, I'll let you know how it goes. All the best, and God bless!

Hello sir John, awsome video as usual but I don't really get what the problem is with buying the same item in different colors. (I've always done it) If it looks nice, again don't really see the issue, even ppl notice. It's a complete different item. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Having a core closet is essential. Be honest with yourself and do a second round of donations. Turn your hangers all one way. After wearing each item. Turn that hanger on the opposite direction. After the season. Take those items that you never worn and donate. This will help you determine what you truly need.

Spot on advice. The fly in the ointment for me has been buying things online. I have a few go to retailers where I know their sizing and fit (for my body type) for shirts and jackets but not so much for pants. I have fallen in to a pattern that has left me with way, way more shirts and jackets than viable pants options. As well as an embarrassing array of sweaters (I tend to buy the same style in 2-4 colors) for a guy that lives in a warm weather state. Plenty of jeans in all washes and color but I have fairly narrow range of chinos and dressier options as I tend only to buy those in person due to high fit variability.
TL;DR: I need to stop impulse buying shirt and jackets online (because it’s easy) and go to a few brick and mortar stores specifically to find new pants for my wardrobe.
Cry for help: I need some encouragement and direction with specific on to how thin to the herd to a more manageable size.

nice... hey John, can you make color combo for people who live in hot climate... not summer time hot outfit, but hot climate(120F)... i live in such climate and the problem with the colors i buy is, it just get washed out due to intense sunrays... couple of time outside and it just look like someone has done a gradient fade from top to bottom... the only colors which survive such a heat are white and couple of pastel color(not all)... i am fed up with it because i cant wear those everyday because it quickly stains... sweat stain, pollution, dirt etc... P.S. i have brown skin tone
