Will Grindavik Open For Tourists Soon? and The Ever Changing Seismic Activity

- Like often before my mind tends to wonder between what expert to listen to, who's right or wrong, and is it time to revive the town now? or should we wait. Those are only some of my thoughts now and I think we can blame the Icelandic media for not diving into the ongoing science debate since it's their job to simplify things as much as possible. But this video is also about the seismic activity and its dropping again but note that I was originally meant to be my Friday upload so I'm talking about the unrest yesterday. Things are quite calm now so this is likely over, but like iv'e mentioned before, this is a part of some new scenario that could be weeks, months or years away.

Thank you for visiting the Just Icelandic Channel.
Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
Thank you for your video and explanation , Gylfi. Then again , a word of caution is advised . As someone who works around Grindavik i have to say that there is still movement around the area . While making the detour roads around the town we see some signs of hidden cracks that are not safe to come close to .
I understand that the business owners want to start up again , but knowing people and their curiosity , it is still not a safe place to have people around .
And kids ? Kids play and do not worry about things that cannot be seen . It only takes one kid that dissapears in a crack and it is all over again .
Gylfi so sorry to hear ye had a casuality who died R.I.P...be safe u lot enjoy those breathta ing views no bigh rise skyscrapers how wonderful is that in itself when london hosts idiots who wish to ignore Gobal Warming ego trips stupid mo ey homeless still.an embarresement to Uk Governance a skyscrapter less city is sometbing in my Book Love all from Greenpeace Folk enjoy yr drinks at yr favourite bar Gylfi when its up & running again.
So true! I really can't imagine kids around there!
Congrats on 100K.
Thanks a ton :)
It seems to me, that if we intend to make the best use of Grindavik that is possible under the circumstances - that it ought to become a center for Volcanic Activety Research (1) which I think would be extremely valuable to the entire world - especially now, and also (2) that the amazing people of Iceland take a lot of PRIDE in the people who came from there. I wonder if those children of Grindavik will become very important students, teachers, and researchers of the phenomena that are occurring in Iceland and other regions of the Planet some day? Maybe because of one of them - we will have a new understanding of how we can detect, interpret, and view these kinds of things that makes everyone in the world SAFER some day....
Thank you very much for everything you have done and shown us

Gylfi, I am a Canadian who visited the Volcano Island five or six times - I can't remember - but I will gladly get on a bus and see famous Grindavik rising like a phoenix.
Iceland is on my bucket list. Its so beautiful and I enjoy your updates.
Welcome to iceland anytime :)
Try for two weeks, three if possible.
I did the Ring Road in 6 days which gave very little time to see sites further off the main road.
Amazing things to see all around the country and the NW peninsula.
The footage of the cracks in the terrain, and the roads that have been covered by lava, are just spectacular.
Thanks Gylfi for the update! Great report & drone footage as well!! Hope Grindavik gets open soon!!!
I hope so too
thanks for the updates gylfi
best wishes for the grindavikings
Much appreciated...
I hate to be Debbie Downer, but, besides the volcanologists, Grindavic needs to have oceanographers evaluate the potential for sea level rise. Now in the short term the people can proceed with a return to life there as long as the eruptions and magma flow stops. But, in the not too distant future Iceland needs a clear understanding of sea level rise. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this discussion.
Thank you so much for your interesting insights Gylfi
Thanks for watching!
Hello Gylfi! Sending Iceland ❤ from the US.
❤ from Iceland
Gylfi, you have so many of Iceland's geological wonders recorded on video. Someone should organize a multi-day tour (guided by you or a self-guided itinerary) that highlights these spectacular locales.
Thanks for sharing more video photography of beautiful Iceland.
Thank you too!
Thanks just icelandic!
These recurrent earthquake swarms are interesting, but there seems to be little ground displacement outside the wider area around Svartsengi. I hope for a pause in eruption activity for Grindavik 🙏, but time will tell which experts are right. It is nice to have a debate and different opinions though.
Thank for your Updates about whats happening in Iceland! Iceland is a place I would like to visit :)
You should visit :) welcome to Iceland :)
I’ll watch anything you post, Gylfi. I always learn something new from each one of your videos, even if they don’t have your narration.
watching from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I give every video a thumbs up in support.
Much appreciated
Last Thursday we were in Grindavik : a very friendly inhabitant of Grindavik led us through the checkpoint and give us an exclusive tour in Grindavik.
To see all the consequences of the earthquakes and the eruptions gave us gooze bumps the whole time and made us breathless. We wish everbody who is affected by the earthquakes and eruptions a lot of courage !
Thanks for touching so many connected topics here. A shoutout to the people who conducted the interviews and wrote the report about Grindavik's youth's wellbeing. That's an important voice for the development of the town. I appreciate you pull together all these developments, Gylfi, AND serve them with your neverending amazing video footage.
Thanks for discussing the situation with the former residents of Grindavik. It is very sad that they have been scattered across the south of Iceland. I don’t know how much they have been able to restore the infrastructure of the houses there, including the electricity, hot water, cold water, and sewage systems. The extreme stretching of the town back in November and December 2023, around 2 meters, must have caused widespread damage to all the underground infrastructure that will be expensive to repair or replace throughout the town. Maybe some sections could be repaired.
You are very wise to listen to the "minority report." Anyone who listened only to the "mainstream" does so at their own peril! God bless you Gifli !:-) 🙏💜⚡
Facts don't care about how many people accept them.
Thank you for your updates. I find this so interesting. I will be visiting Iceland this year.
Wonderful! Welcome to Iceland :)
This work you put into your videos are truly inspiring and inspiring. You bring much information and knowledge to all of us that hasn’t any knowledge about volcanoes and the nature of Iceland 🇮🇸
Please keep up the exceptionally work you do - it’s only helping all of us wishing to visit your amazing country 🤩👍
You're correct Iceland must be willing to change just as the geology.
Thank you again, Gylfi, for a brilliant video showing Iceland off to good effect. If more people watched your videos I think that the tourist industry in Iceland would pick up quickly as you show the bigger picture and amazing scenery.. You have presented some ideas that do need wider discussion with the inhabitants of Grindavik, and scientists, perhaps politicians as well, about how to move forward and maintain their community. Youngsters are the future of the town and Iceland itself. There is so much uncertainty about the eruption cycle still, and that delays any decisions about the future of the town. I wish I was fit enough, I'd visit Iceland like a shot.
Just a thought. We are coming to Iceland this week. We have 3 friends, completely unrelated, all there in the last month. All are geologists or engineers
Great video as always Gylfi. Nice to hear the human side of the story, even though it is heartbreaking for the children. Lets hope for some positive outcomes and some relief for the people of Grindavik. Loved the previous video, so please continue with your work. Best wishes and Kind Regards from John and family in NZ.
Thank you for the update. Your drone footage is breathtaking and shows the beauty of Iceland.
Seem to me that Grindavick need a lot of inspection before anyone uses it for anything, and example is the damage done to the buildings another is how deep and wide are the cracks under the ground and another is how do those cracks inpact using the town for anything. Politics are stupid, money grubbers are stupid if they don't want to know if the town is safe. They are some other unsavory things as well but I will settle for calling ignoring safety stupid.
Thank you for the fine video and update!!
My pleasure!
Really enjoy your videos and commentaries. Congrats on 100k subscribers! Always looking forward to and happy when I see that you've released a new video. First class work! Really a tough situation with the town and the whole area. With so many unknowns and differing scientific theories it's really tough to try to come up with a plan for the future. I can't imagine how difficult it's been for the people of Grindavik and everyone that's been affected by all of these eruptions. They're always in my prayers for a favorable outcome as are you for safety while you're traveling about getting footage.

Excellent and positive update and yes it would be so amazing to open up Grindavik for the kids and for tourism. Your footage is stunning 😊
Many thanks
Another great video. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Congratulations on the 100,000!!
Thank you so much 😀
I hope it can open again soon :)
. Also... always happy to see that green house still there and surviving near the lavaflows :D
Thank you for the update. From South Africa Be Safe God Bless
Always welcome :)
An interesting debte about the future of Grindavik, the idea of it being a tourist attraction is one that, I feel, would need careful handing. The former residents should be heavily involved in any decisions given that the former home/lives have been torn apart and this would leave some raw feelings. Sadly there is always the possibility that some tourists would go beyond reasonable behaviour (for that instagram photo etc) - not unheard of sadly. I don't think anyone would like to see it become a ghost town but sensitivity would be needed - but of course Mother Nature may still have something to say about that.
Good evening Gylfi,
Greetings from the Netherlands and congratulations with the grow of the channel.
Thanks for the info and the beautiful drone footage.
Hopefully Iceland will get a less exciting period now to think about the future of it and how to adapt.
Keep safe.
Thanks for this update. The drone footage are just amazing. Have a nice day Gylfi.
Thanks for watching!
Happy that you hit a 1½00k subs ! Congrats ! I too feel that whenever something has changed largely it is time to reconsider the next steps.
Thanks a ton :) I finally did it :)
I will arrive in Iceland in October. I do hope that the people of Grindavik are safely back in their homes!
Welcome to Iceland :)
@@JustIcelandic Thank you! I'm excited to go explore!!
It would be wonderful if Grindavik could reopen! Still, I wonder if it might be too soon safety wise.
The town has been scanned with ground penetration radars and mapped. there is a fracture that runs trough town but the rest is in fine condition.
I volunteer to be the first tourist to return to Grindavik!
Welcome to Grindavik :)
THANK YOU 👍🙏>>>💚
I think a lot of people would, especially to see where the lava stopped right against that fence, with their own eyes.
Need a ride? 😊
Thanks for another great explanation. 👏👏👏
Good luck in your weather and filming.
Thank you! 😃
Lived in Iceland for two years with the navy.
Have been to grindavik many times .
The Air Force had a site about 2 miles before the town. Have been to grindavik many times, and the Blue lagoon to relax, back then it wasn't as big a tourist attraction as now.
And in the winter the northern lights are spectacular.
Thanks for sharing :) and always welcome
Thank you for the update, stay safe😬🙏🏻
Thank you, I will
Amazing landscapes, amazing footage, amazing commentary 💜
Thanks and welcome ☺
Great News!
Welcome
Love your updates. I hope to visit next year. I'm from Vancouver, Canada.
You should! and welcome to Iceland :)
I wish we could have flown over to view it from the sky when we visited Iceland from Australia in March April for Easter.
The town will be opened again, just a matter of time, and welcome to Iceland :)
@@JustIcelandic thank you. There’s so much more to see and experience. I love seeing it with your drone and voice over. 🙏🏻
I’m surprised Thor is saying it’s coming to an end.. I understand what he’s saying but I still see quakes and uplift so it seems a little premature to say it’s done?
A rainbow (2:35) is always a good sign... as long as it is not misused by the LGBTQ community.
... and what a fitting picture the piebald sheep (6:52) with a white and a black lamb. That's Sunday. A nice start to the day.
Thank you very much for the update Gulfi. Let's hope that rest will now return to Grindavik, the power plant and the Blue Lagoon.
It is always good to hear from you Gylfi and watch your beautiful videos.
Best regards from Ontario 🇨🇦Canada.
Thank you so much!
Thanks so much.
Thank you Gylfi.
Welcome :)
There is always a chance that the rift opens up in town. Not safe there until the entire series is over, or at least slows down between eruptions.
Thank you for your videos they are so informative 😊
Glad you like them 😊
nice view of the northern part of the fault line on the IMO from monday plenty of 2+ eq up there 👍
Very unusual lineup this time!
@@JustIcelandic yes not the usual cluster , there were quite a few further out last week i think it was more clustered though, working its way back to the island
Thank you for another fine video!
Welcome :)
Hello and greetings from England, really interesting to see the man’s face in the rock at the top of the crack (5:45 min), keep us all informed, love the videos.
Thanks 👍
Some weeks ago, before the last eruption ended, there was an unbroken trend of the magma inflow decreasing. Extrapolating (continuing the trend) on that curve let to a cautious prediction that this mess might end in the end of summer... if the trend persists. There are also ideas about processes that could be responsible for the slowdown of inflow - magma freezes in the tube system and gradually blocks the tube. Right now, however, the downward trend seems broken, as the inflow now is a bit stronger than before the last eruption, certainly not weaker. This is why metoffice, who are generally very cautious with their statements and don't like to prematurely give strong news, say that they don't see evidence about this stuff decreasing. Maybe this is a temporary deviation from the general downward trend, and the series still ends relatively soon, as these scientists predicted. Or maybe the downward trend actually did stop, and the inflow now stays constant a long while or increases again or fluctuates. Or maybe it does stop but resumes after a few years, for example triggered by plate tectonics (plates drifting apart) opening up some more space for magma to come up. To my knowledge, the volcanologists cannot tell us what will happen, and do not quite know how the "tube system" looks like. It seems to me that they can estimate reasonably well the magma inflow - they have models which can tell them that if so-and-so much ground uplift happens at their GPD measurements, then the best possible explanation is an inflow of X m^3/s at a certain depth and location. But these models only interpret/diagnose what is happening now, and do not really predict the future, because we don't really know the processes that steer the magma inflow, and we don't have good observations of the very deep processes (like magma velocities and temperatures...). Disclaimer: I am NOT a volcanolgist or geologist, though I work in other branches of earth science.
To summarise, I (as a layman) get the impression that the controversy on whether this mess will end soon is not much more than a debate on whether we believe that the general downward trend will continue (albeit with some deviations), or whether we think that we just can't tell, especially given the current interruption. I doubt there is much more to the metoffice's statement than an attitude of "don't make any audacious claims when you're not quite sure (and push back against anyone who does make strong, unproven prediction)".
Thanks for sharing Katla, many good points, I think those 3 scientists were pleased with the numbers that were finally published, although we might be heading into increased inflow like it looks right now. As for me, it's important to listen to all voices but I'm not the expert here, but those new numbers justified my questions in my last video. And the MET office is above criticism, when it comes to data interpretation, as a matter of fact, to have many of their old teachers watching over them is helping them to stay focused :)
@@JustIcelandic "to have many of their old teachers watching over them is helping them to stay focused :)" as long as it doesn't make them nervous... Ah well, my old teacher still is in my department and having him sit next to you when you're, say, examining a student is a little nerve-racking.... though I survived :-)
Ask anyone involved in policing or security and they will tell you no. That town would be a nightmare keeping an eye on the tourists and for emergency services dealing with a sudden burst of magmatic gas. Whom would be responsible for ensuring safety?
Greetings from Mexico in the Yucatan peninsula (with 0 volcano, but a lot of sinkholes)
Greetings to Mexico from Iceland :)
Thank you for your great videos! Do you know how many houses were bought out by government until now?
To reopen Grindavik seems to be a great idea. But it will hurt the feelings of former residents if hundreds of tourists enter the town, even former homes and do stupid things for the best instagram/yt footage.
I'm always looking forward to your videos with calm voice and great information. Thank you and greetings from Germany.🙋🏼♀️
It's over 500 houses/apartements that have been bought, I think it's around half the town.
I am not a volcanologist, geologist or anything similar.
One thing I KNOW is that pachamama DOES NOT care about our wishes. It only does its job. Just like Mr. Thordarson said (and that demonstrates the level of his responsability towards the community and all involved) "We know that we don't know" - BESIDES all the research and studies having being conducted. Probably a JAPANESE geo-related scientist (better more than just one) should have a visit to Iceland and after having all data (and more of course )that we all have (just like spectators) seen, give opinions.
Thanks for sharing and welcome :)
Thank you ❤️
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you Gylfi...tell me...would it be possible to fill the caverns under Grindavik?...say with concrete...I know this sounds like a mad idea...but hey nothing would be lost to consider it...seems such a shame to lose it...I really did like your last video, on the ''guts'' of a volcano...and I would be thrilled to see more Icelandic features. ATB from Scotland 😃🌠
Enjoy be safe.
Welcome :)
Wow ! There's something going on in the North Atlantic all the way down the Tjornes fracture zone.
This was very unusual tectonic earthquake lineup
Speaking as a European who would love to visit someday (when the funds permit it), I hope Grindavik can recover from this through tourism activity and education facilities like a volcano museum, a volcanology research center and the like, I would gladly spend a day or 2 learning about it, visit the recent flows and buy some specialties and souvenirs there.
I think that you’re right, Gylfi, I would love to travel to Grindavik to see the area for myself. Tourists would definitely enjoy seeing the town for themselves. I hope the authorities allow some businesses to open. Thank you for the info.
Totally agree! I just want to stop by as iv'e done for decades for my hot chocolate to go, or a burger :)
That would be fascinating.
thank you.
You're welcome

Not growing tourist industry…. Uh… I am not sure what to say here. Of course we all need a stable income, and interest demands investments that pay off, but more and more tourists are not the answer here. The south is already over- cramped I think. Prices for food and fuel etc. are already high. My CEO was there for a week, and she said its way too expensive. So, personally I must say that its too much already, at least for me. Its a bit sad that so many major attractions in the south, people need to see the north, to lower tourism pressure in the south. A main reason for the non- growth may be international inflation and cost of living plus the dreaded war we see in the east of Europe. I don‘t know many people being able to afford a longer stay in iceland. The flight is not expensive and relatively short, but accommodation and fuel and food sum up a lot.
A challenge with bringing people back to Grindavik is that it may be necessary to evacuate them in the future. The situation reminds me a bit of Hekla; it has not erupted in many years and you can hike on it if you dare; but you may have leas than 30 minutes to get far away if it shows signs of erupting. In addition to sudden eruptions in and around Grindavik, the ground sank in part of it, so could part of it end up under the ocean if that repeats?
I know that Iceland economy relies on tourists, so every bit of new interesting attractions are welcome. It may give new life for restaurants and hotels and probably for museum, also if there will be new centers opened up, But the main thing is how grindavikings themselves are willing to do. This is for them to decide. Also safety first, so that there will be no more chance to drop down.
Pristine Video ! Lets hope this is the end of Volcanic activity
We sure hope so....
Gylfi, several years ago we made friends with folks from Siglufjordur who talked about their family's last hike and picnicking in the areas that were to be flooded thus never to be seen again , changed by the Alcoa plant project. So sad.
I know that whole political thing and energy issues are a troublesome issues for many Icelanders. I have found some images and film about this subject, the Alcoa project, mostly political focused.
but I was interested in seeing images of before , during, and after of these places . I don’t think drones were used at that time, right, but there must be a source of photos and videos taken from airplanes or high spots . That show the before, the during, and the after of these natural places that seemed so magnificent in the descriptions people have given and in the few photos I have seen.
I know you are a busy man and have background in tech and video. So I imagined you might know of resources of images , even though the quality might not what we might have today with photo and video.
I wondered if you could recommend good sources to find and view images of these places, (or if you have already posted images of these places?)
I am located in the US so the archives of Icelandic schools or libraries are not in reach unless they are online or in published form, or film. (Until I get to iceland again, maybe in two years?)
Thanks for any help you can give. Sorry if this is not a happy topic or too much to ask.
Feel free to ignore this request. Love your videos and appreciate your Icelandic insights.
in other parts of the world, there are people living on very-much active volcanoes with Lava spewing out of them... since the eruptions seem to be very slow and easy to control (in terms of Lava barriers etc.), I do not think it is reason enough to keep people away.
maybe, make those who live there regularly consider their risk (like organizing evacuation drills) but I think it is utterly wrong the government/lawmakers have a right to keep these residents from living their lives.
Everyone would want to see the fence that never burnt!
I would like to see the ever so famous fence that "stopped" lava.... I've booked for a trip in January anyway!!!!
I have close-ups there that will be a part of a video i'm working on.
@@JustIcelandic we booked a trip in reykjavik to have a chance to see the northen lights. But yourself do you just make video or you do tours as well?
We saw that house and the fence. Really breathtaking.
You Sir are becoming a national treasure! Maybe you should open a bed & breakfast or motel! 😊
I would come to Grindavik from Scotland as a tourits as I've just had my DNA back from Ancestry and under my Viking heritage is Icelandic Vikings!!!! I am an older viking so would need an all in one package with easy transfers if you can arrange it please Gylfi hahaha.
Thank you Gylfi.
Is the fishing port at Grindavik operating at the moment?
The scientists need to do a full survey of the fissures and graben that have formed all around the town before determining whether the town can be inhabited and opened for businesses again, right?
Beautiful Iceland
We agree!
'Thanks Gylfi. I hope things get back to some form of normal. Is it possible as a tourist to drive from the airport to Krysuvik via Grindavik ?
No it's not, you have to use road 42 from hafnarfjordur but if you are around, do the 428 detour :) you won't regret it :) road.is
My biggest dream is to come and have a coffee in Grindavik, trying to use the little Icelandic I managed to learn in a month
Best of luck :) and welcome to Iceland
No doubt I plan to return to Grindavík and eat the catch of the day at Bryggjan again.
Could this mean that they are gonna go back to Grindavik and make it for tourists?
Yes, the town has been scanned with ground penetration radars and mapped so we know where we stand, and local business owners want to get guests again.
@@JustIcelandic Alright thank you. We were really worried that something was gonna happen to the town. But again thank you.
that rainbow looks beautiful = praying that another fissure will open a far distance from Grindavik
Its more likely then not that the next one, if it occurs, will be more of a threat to the power plant and the Blue Lagoon, and thanks for watching :)

Remedy for Grindavik ... Advertise bus tours to the Destroyed [or Dead] City of Grindavik ...
First stop toilet followed by Fish and Chips from the local port served by the most amazing people on earth ...
But the Bus tour had requirements for all passengers to carry a full survival pack, water, personal medical, food, locator beacons and when they realise they've been had and it's still alive odds are the Bus Business will take off
Any chance of converting something to a Casino!?
Giving in to politicians and opening the town for tourists, what will be the fate of property that the absent residents have still been unable to collect? What happens if a tourist or a guide falls in one of those cracks????
The town was mapped with radars a while ago so it's known where the risky spots are
Sure, why not just open the area to tourists.
Just bring life to the town, no matter how, I want to drive by for my cup of hot chocolate like I've done for decades
#Just Icelandic - I've heard your selling tickets on a bus tour through Grindavik but we have to do Fitness Training for a week in prep and pay the hireage on a $500 Military Survival Pack? When do you bring out the Quad Video covering the First Bus In.
Do you know how much fun you could have promoting Iceland right now?
You could offer Survivor Bus quad videos flying past the buyers bus window every 15 minutes and making a button on your survival pack flash red 3 times ... and the sound of your GPS position in your selected language come from the straps of the survival Pack ... Look by the time they've got back on the bus after the Toilet ... this is Gold and the faces getting off the bus at the biggest fish and chips shop at the port !!! Videos $100
They continue with the tour or swim back ... Fishermen can be Quite Hungry Trust me all passengers will elect to stay on the bus and get your video ...
I've seen More Crass things sold in america - No Refund
I'm also very interested in why the 3 scientist's theory is deemed incorrect by IMO and others. You'd think there would be a clear scientific counterargument publicised for something so important
