Designer Buys and Renovates House She’s Dreamed Of For Years (House Tour)

  • Liz Gardner of creative studio Bodega Ltd. buys and renovates this heritage house as she had aspired to, having admired it from afar for many years. Perched on a hill in a leafy neighbourhood near downtown Minneapolis, the home illustrated a unique style of architecture and boundless potential to renovate.
Liz had always felt a long-term draw to the property after witnessing it having been on the market and taken off years prior to her and her partner acquiring it. She describes the building as being dreamlike and perfectly contrasting the hustle and bustle of the city. To her, the dwelling is an anomaly - its style cannot be easily identified. Exuding notes of Italian-style architecture and a twist of contemporary features, this physical state of the building mirrors the way in which her and her team inhabit it. Amid a location known for its historical heritage homes, Maison Bodega reflects both the past and the present.
Looking to the future she, and partner Josef Harris, buys and renovates the house, transforming it into a home and creative space known as Maison Bodega. Taking various design cues from the existing architecture, the hybrid live-work space is a thoughtful blend of heritage and modern interior design sensibilities that caters to parties, workshops, family life for Liz, Josef and their dogs and, most recently, a house tour with The Local Project.
Downstairs, the kitchen is undoubtedly a social space. Reimagined within the existing architecture to become a modern kitchen that nods to its heritage bones, its potential is one of the main reasons Liz buys and renovates the house. A suite of Fisher & Paykel appliances is discreetly integrated into the design, which includes stone benchtops and brass cabinetry. The Local Project’s house tour showcases the kitchen’s tapestry of materials and textures and detailed interior design - the stone is intricately veined and the hues are soft and buttery.
Liz buys and renovates this house with an ambitious view that is reflected in the extensive interior design scope. Her ability to renovate the existing shell to create a dynamic space for living, creating and socialising can be felt in every room - from the shared spaces to those that are more intimate. The effect is a blend of modern and historic design principles that can be appreciated through the house tour. The condition she buys and renovates this home in was a significant design challenge, which has paid off in spades.

Not for me the raw walls, but the overall effect and the respect for the building and its history is very impressive. The quality of the light coming through the windows and falling on the various surfaces is very moving.

Interesting..... my favorite thing is the raw walls and the contrast between its imperfection with the very perfect herringbone wood floors.

    This is simply divine…
    The neutral, soft colors…
The light that washes over all of the neutral palette just makes it glow. Just sublime.

Many congratulations, Ms. Gardner! Young and successful, and creating your dreams. 💐💐💐
I appreciate that so much, seemingly, as much as was possible to preserve, was preserved. It is so large and open, elegant, and yet it has a homey, comforting feeling. As Ms. Gardner explains her renovation and creation of the larder, we see how much thought went into every choice to create this beautiful home. Although here, the work proceeded with an eye toward preservation, Ms. Gardner’s vision and her confidence in creating this space put me in mind of the designer, John Saladino. I remember seeing photos of his NYC apartment back in the 1980s. He treated the walls to recreate the look of Italian villa or palazzo. A quote from Saladino:
"I believe our surroundings have a profound effect on us. At their most sublime, they can take us out of this world, and give us what I call moments of transcendence."
Love this unique and beautiful dream brought to reality. You just knew that anybody who had that sweet doggie would put a lot of heart into their work.

Beautiful house which has great bones for sure. The furnishings, stones and appliances are perfect. I am not a fan however of the broken millwork, unfinished and cracked spot-plastered walls. That's the first thing that catches the eye and it takes away from the beautiful treatments that you've added. It just basically looks dirty. Too bad. As you know, you can easily achieve the hand plastered walls and old millwork and still have the aged, but clean and finished look.

This house is the same vintage as my mother. I love the history, the windows and the light. Such a lot of space to work with. The new changes do look like they have always been there. Minneapolis gets extremely cold. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Minneapolis, Minnesota was -34 °F .That would affect the house a lot. I wonder how she keeps it warm? I saw no curtains or rugs. No discussion around insulation. Not a place to keep pet chickens….in that tiny cage……

If this was some Italian villa that was restored with old fireplaces and frescos that were partially preserved, I would've liked it. But, creating an illusion of frescos preserved and leaving the space as "half-renovated" feels fake to me. It's like someone really wants to live in Venice or some country home in Tuscany but is stuck in Minneapolis so they play-pretend.
