Learning to record in front of people is rough. What’s even more rough is when you run into your channel subscribers. So far it’s happened to me three times and it completely throws me off my game.
I think that would throw me off my game too! Hasn't happened yet... but just running into random people when you feel more comfortable recording alone is enough to throw me off haha! You're doing great with your channel... keep 'er going!
A great video, Rob. Well done. TH-cam can be a bit of a mystery. Small creators have plenty of self-doubt. We all need to keep going forward and forget about all the numbers and enjoy what we do.
Thank you for this video! I also don't really like to record when other folks are around lol. I'll set out to record in different locations and different back drops. I will not give up! 🙂 I appreciate your help!
Haha that certainly can be a challenge!! Try to focus on one thing, make the video, and don't worry if it isn't perfect. You actually learn more from completing a video and then seeing what you could have done better... then make another one! Rinse and repeat :-) Best of luck to you!

Rob the Maritimer... Another cool video and topic. I struggle to get views on some of my videos. I don't know why because I do basically the same thing in my video. Some get at lot of views and some not so much.
Thanks, this is very helpful. My channel is still new, but what I can figure out thus far is that continuous learning is critical. I don't have an intro; I personally think it wastes the viewer's time. I add some form of branding to my first minute as I get on with the video. Like you said, I keep editing to a minimum. I also don't film near anyone!😆
Sounds like you're on the right track! I like your idea of not using an intro because I agree it can waste a viewer's time. It can also give viewers a reason to leave your video... and you don't want to give them reasons to do that! Best of luck to you :-)
Hi Rob, I love your videos! The backdrop in this one is spectacular! I’m not sure I want to start a channel, but you’re good company and I find lessons can be pulled from the content for basically starting anything new 😃 So, thanks for putting yourself out there! Cheers to many more awesome videos 🥂
Great video, I relate with the staying away from people part lol. I may head deep into the woods today to try out my new Osmo 3. Thanks for the encouragement as always!
Thanks Rob, I am from Nova Scotia as well. Started channel about 6 months ago and it's a learning curve for sure. Faceless but my real voice. Just not comfortable with face time on camera just yet. It's auto related and mixed focus so it does make things difficult for the algorithm. Not discouraged but am trying to figure how to improve stats. Subscribers is a feast or famine scenario where I will gain 20 subscribers one week and zero the next. 48 hr view stats have been dropping so I need to correct that as well. Really depends on the video I upload. Most seem to like abandoned car stuff (I do too but can't consistently find hidden spots lol). Definitely a work in progress.
Best thing to do is just keep studying your analytics and look for reasons some videos outperform others. When you find something that works, double down on it! Also, the best type of videos for growth are videos that help people solve a problem. If you can do that, people will return :-) All the best!!
3 simple things are needed to make any video work: 1. For the algorithm to properly understand and classify your video you have to use words, phrases and sentences that is very relevant to your topic. If using a lot of words like «things» and «stuff» and unclear structure in your content will make the job harder for the algorithm. So this point is for the machine. 2. For people: The thumb and title is your advertisement for your video. If step 1 is done properly your video will be shown to the right people. Job done for the algorithm. Now you have to do the work of convincing people to click on your video. The thumb has to trigger curiosity, or «click» with your intended viewers, offer value, information or entertainment value, promise insight or understanding - The title has to build upon this - if they aren’t good enough people won’t click, no matter how good the video might be. 3. Your delivery and the structure of your content. These two are interlinked. If you have something of value to share, but get to the point after 10 minutes people are already gone. Doesn’t matter if you have an «authentic» style video or hypercut frenetic editing style video. If the value isn’t apparent quickly people er gone. If your message or value is lost in an unstructured mess of personal irrelevant stories and sidetrack-quests most people will move to the next video. It was the mistake many Neistat-copycats made, they copied the style, but not the substance. Many people misunderstand the «authentic» wave to be about just rambling on about things, but it’s not. Structure, value, substance and emotional connection at some level plays a part. As a bonus: Topic Choice - too specific and fewer people will be in the target group, too wide and the algorithm might miss in terms of hitting the right people. 3 things, quite simple, but hard to do right, which is where the bonus bonus comes in - Time. doing it over time, improving a little bit on a couple of aspects every time will yield results. And why should you even listen to me? Just 600+ subs and 2000+ watch time hours in 8 months with 20 vids hardly makes me a youtube expert - but the times I’ve made the effort to try and hit some of these points the vids have performed above and beyond what my subscriber numbers should indicate, so make of it what you will :)
Hello Rob, I have been enjoying your videos and also like your walks in the woods. I was born in 1946 and wanting to get my channel started to share my life experiences and you are being very helpful so keep it up.
Oh, yes. My newest channel WORK HARD PLAY HARD is a good example. I know that i am not the most "charming" or "charismatic" of people. My topics may even be boring. And, to be open, it's very important to me to upload authenticity. If i don't have anything authentic to say, I'm not recording. So...it's been a short bit since my last #4 video, featuring myself has been uploaded. I don't want to be fake. However, the channel is a way for me to introduce my designs. So, since i have so many damn designs featuring all sorts of things...i think that i might just do a thing whereby i have a "highlighted design" for that video and if it's something I don't do...maybe i can do a deep dive into that particular thing. Learn about it and create videos around that topic/design. It's a thought and might be "the thing". Who knows. Thank you for making this video, sir. 👊
Thanks for the tips. I have a hard time doing the “talking head” style videos but to get a story out, it’s the simplest, I think. Great video and love the advice to create the video to help others.
You will get better at talking head videos the more you do it, I promise!! Just be yourself, try not to "act" like someone else, and pretend like you're talking to a close friend. I find that works for me :-) Best of luck and have fun with it!!
Rob, I like your analogy with scientific method 😊 ... observe, data collect, hypothesize, refine, data collect, refine... just keep TRYING! 😀 ... yes ⚒️🤠👷♀️ 🪨
I wish I had said it as well as you just did! lol I kind of butchered it! But I think I made my point :-) Keep trying new things, figure out what works and what doesn't... and double down on what works! Cheers :-)
I want to start creating content, and your videos have been super helpful. I'm still working out the tech, though, and setting up my "studio." I've got about 25 scripts ready to start filming, but so much goes into setting things up to begin with. I can't wait to start filming, though!
And once you start, you'll be so glad you did!! Try not to worry too much about the studio being perfect... just start. Your studio can evolve in time and get better... and then your videos will also serve as proof of your journey too :-) Best of luck with it!
Always enjoy watching your content. See, my biggest problem right now is that I've yet to post my finished video, just introducing myself. The problem i'm running into right now is that I would like to do videos about everyday stuff, I also wanna have a channel that's dedicated to gaming. Which is something I like to do in my downtime. As I don't know if it's a good thing to blend those things together. Because they're gonna be a little bit different from one another. Kind of like one would be more about everyday life, and another channel would be a game I would like to cover. Maybe i'm just burning myself out thinking about it before I even got started.
If I were you I would probably have two different channels. Have a main channel for your every day stuff and a secondary channel for gaming videos. You will have a better chance at growing a channel where you're helping people with every day stuff than you will with a gaming channel... but if gaming is what you like to do and you like the process of making those types of videos, then by all means, do that :-) All the best to you!!
Wow, some really good advice and I thank you for this video. I started my channel for family and friends and for some weird reason I've grown to 530 subscribers. BUT I'm so nervous of just talking away like you do. I've tried it but feel awkward.
Thanks for the info. I started my channel on the 8th and i just made it to 25 subscribers. Still trying to get comfortable in front of the camera and find my niche.
That's great! Keep on making videos and you'll soon notice an improvement in how you talk to the camera :-) It just takes practice! Best of luck to you :-)
I've been active on TH-cam for about 5 years...Am 54 now, channel has 846 subs, over 900 videos. Despite having a computer aptitude, I've struggled with using editing software, and creating decent thumbnails. I do have ADHD, so that is an additional factor I deal with when creating videos. I try to stick to the KISS principle, also. My top performing video (3 years old, with 15000+ views, and tends to still be in the top 3 weekly) is one totally unrelated to the subject matter of my channel in its current form. When I started, I had 3 topics going, that I now wish I had split into 2 or 3 individual channels. I no longer do videos totally unrelated to the channel's main topic (being an inside view of the antiques business), though do some scrap metal related videos, as it is a sideline for additional income in the business. I have fallen into a rut lately of doing mostly "buying haul" videos; that is showing what I have purchased (at auction, house calls, picking, thrifting, etc), what was paid, what the items are worth, history of things, etc. Most other topics seem to fall short in getting many views, but even then, if I break 100 views in a week, I'm doing well. The one topic that does well are POV videos of picking hoarded properties. However, those situations don't come up much, and when they do, many times the owners of the properties aren't keen on having their properties shown in the state they are in, so I have to do a "haul" video instead. I tried "picker tips" educational videos, but had such sporadic results that it got frustrating, with far too low of views compared to the work involved in making them. Haven't done those for 8 months. Do try to change things up a bit sometimes, but with no real tangible results.
It's important to enjoy the entire process... if you enjoy it then you'll continue to do it. Sounds like you've tried several different things and that's great! That's how you can learn what works and what doesn't. Keep at it and you'll see growth... especially if you make videos that help others. I wish you the best of luck! :-)
That's all part of the process :-) If you can't see any obvious reason for the change, maybe it's time to try something new. Either a new type of content or a new look. I took a quick look at your channel and although I like the aesthetic and consistent look of everything, maybe it's time to throw something new at your viewers. Some things you can try... take your hat off for the thumbnail. You've got it on in all of your thumbnails so far... just having it NOT on might be enough to cause curiosity among your regular viewers... and an uptick in views from your subscribers may be all you need for youtube to want to test it with new potential viewers. Another idea... less text on your thumbnails, and also maybe a cleaner font. Try to only use 2 or 3 words (4 max) and have those words be mostly different than what's in your title. Those are just some ideas to think about! Best of luck with it!! :-)
Hey Julie :) I think that's something TH-cam is doing on their own... if they think your language preference is French, they may translate the title for you. I didn't put in a French title. Also I noticed that youtube is starting to provide translated scripts and translated AI voiceovers. If you click settings for this video, you can choose to listen in French if you prefer! That's definitely not me though... my French is a little rusty (juste un peu) ;)
@RobtheMaritimer No Rob, I knew that was too many people. The crawls man, the crawls! 😀😵💫😁 Unless your like my wife & I, probably, been there done that that. No more. Every place we go now is for the food.
Great advice. I can tell you I see professonal TV hosts using cheat sheets all the time. So people should not worry about that. The more videos you make the less mistake you will eventually make.
@ Hey Rob - found you through Alexa S. and Ty M. Based on your recs, found a quad case and also mounting device on Amazon (already have tripod / selfie stick). I’d like to order them to use for my walking videos but not sure how they work together. I’d love you to do a video explaining it! TIA!!!
@@ellenshealthykitchen That's great! I actually made a video on exactly this... how I use these things together to make my walk and talk videos. Hope this helps! th-cam.com/video/laxfUFDftS8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=UaL0AL8waQNgxBJO
TH-cam pushes videos for viewers based on their interest history. I got a viral video recently and I don't know it did lol. Thanks man for the advices 🎉
I know someone in my niche who pays a "professional" editor to do videos and they are amazing.... The channel still struggles to get views and subs..... I do Scuba Diving and Catch, Clean, Cook videos in my niche and I know it may take some time to reach a big audience so I take the time to learn a grow. That does not mean I don't struggle at times and wonder what I am doing wrong. It's a process I think. Any advice for that type of content? I don't really find others who train in that niche. Thanks. Great video.
Some people hire video editors to edit their videos, yes... but depending on how many or how often you plan to make a video, that could get very expensive. You could also get in a trap whereby you want to make a change and every little change costs you. I personally think it's a good practice to learn to edit your own videos. It doesn't take long to do basic editing once you get into it... but more complex editing will always take more time. Just some things to think about! Best of luck to you :-)
Hello. I don't know if you noticed, but this video of yours is available with dubbing in six languages. How did you achieve this feat? This is truly a quantum leap in global accessibility on TH-cam. Available in Italian, German, Spanish, English, French and Portuguese. I need to learn how to do this in my videos. Please teach me. Thank you.
I use a Joby Gorilla tripod with the Quadlock tripod adapter and case :-) I made a full video on how I make my outdoor videos here: th-cam.com/video/laxfUFDftS8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=CEBTJSnjUsBp0gD4
"All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts".
When I see people say they gave it a good 3+ years and it didn't work, I notice they only posted a handful of videos and half of them were random family vacation videos. I have witnessed a channel with 1k+ subs uploading consistent well thought out videos but only get double digit views. Makes me believe the algo can dislike a channel 🤔
TH-cam is a completely different journey for everyone... there's no one reason for the success or failure of videos/channels... but a combination of things. Best of luck to you! :-)
I would love to do content with my face (my content is mainly ai and faceless) but if u see a video i posted you will see how uneasy i am. it is so obvious that i am not used to it and even nervous. Though i talk about horrible experiences from my past i think even if i didn't i would still be that way. I do not look normal or whatever. Tattoo's and sharp teeth.
People don't mind if people in videos appear nervous... that actually makes you more relatable because very few people actually do put themselves in videos. Most people on youtube are content consumers and not content producers... something to think about ;-)
Basically you still have to niche down no matter how you put it especially if you’re posting for over 5 years and still getting no views . Well we will see when I do start posting on here .
Identifying a niche and arguably more importantly, identifying who your target audience is, will definitely help a channel grow faster. Best of luck to you :-)
Hey ROB I’m on you tube but I feel like giving up my last video I just posted is weight loss and phentermine and I got no views posted 1 day ago my views did go down I need help I was thinking to change my whole channel into a budgeting channel but how do I transition from the current channel to a budgeting
There is nothing special you need to do to transition. You're already putting your face in your videos so I think that's great :) You could maybe make an "introductory video" whereby you just introduce yourself and tell your audience that you're going to be trying some new types of content. Tell them what you're good at, what your interests are and just be real with them! Budgeting sounds like a good idea... as long as that's something you're passionate about and/or are really good at. People will be able to tell if it's "your thing" or not and if it is, that increases the chances they'll connect with you. I wish you the best of luck with it!!
I stoppped posting comments because I think its a waste of time and energy, but because I'm still thinking of starting a TH-cam channel based on my profession I will comment here. I cut the cable cord about 10 years ago. I have watched countless TH-cam videos. As a avid watcher, some of the turnoffs for me is, a novice pretending to be an expert, using female sexuality to get hits on a video, I could care less about cinematography in nature, sponsor ads(I have commercial free TH-cam), politics, TH-camrs thinking they are celebrities and videos when fellow "celebrities" collaborate. Eventually all TH-camrs use the same thumbnails, expressions, and titles. " I have to tell you the truth". Thumbnail looking so sad. So I guess I like down to earth, humble, interesting, educational, somewhat in the mainstream. I suppose those channels with a large subscriber base have cult like followers. Not in to cults so maybe TH-cam is not for me. And I would say the most annoying feature of the TH-cam algorithm is how it recommends hundreds of videos on the same subject after clicking on just one video. Click on just one animal related video and watch TH-cam at work.

Spend time in your analytics and try to figure out what works and what doesn't... there's a lot of clues hidden in there! Best of luck :-)
Hey.... a walk and talk video! Nice! I'm just uploading a video about overcomming the fear of doing this in public 🙂
Good luck with it!!
Thank you so much for the kind words! All the best to you :-) Cheers!
Great video, I relate with the staying away from people part lol. I may head deep into the woods today to try out my new Osmo 3. Thanks for the encouragement as always!
Good luck with it!!
Thanks for the tip ❤
My pleasure! :-)
3 simple things are needed to make any video work:
Thank you for your detailed comment! Lots of good info. Best of luck :-)
Hello Rob, I have been enjoying your videos and also like your walks in the woods. I was born in 1946 and wanting to get my channel started to share my life experiences and you are being very helpful so keep it up.
I know you have a lot of stories and things to share.
Press that record button....Good Luck!!!! 😊
Thank you, I'm glad my videos are resonating with you! All the best :-)
Thank you! Great ideas.
You are so welcome!
GREAT ADVICE, sir. Thank you! 👊
Best of luck :)
Great tips, Rob! Thank you.
My pleasure!
Blessings and thank you Rob for great info keep it coming stay warm and safe 😊
Thank you so much :-)
You actually look at the comments! Thanx!
Of course I do! I get most of my video ideas from these comments ;-)
It feels awkward for me too... it felt REALLY awkward the first time I did it but it's slowly starting to feel easier :-)
Just want to say thanks. Keep doing what your doing. Sometimes it's just one sentence that resonates, but that was all I needed.
I appreciate that! Cheers :-)
great words. I know my niche and audience, just trying to learn myself by putting out the content and being consistent. thanks for the video!
You got this!
Thanks so much for this video !, I've had my channel for a few months and to all small channel keep a spirit
Thanks for watching and best of luck to you!!
excellent advice about changing up the videos!
Glad it was helpful!
I actually enjoy the outdoor shots, like bonus footage as I love beaches, and your beaches are different to mine lol❤
It is cool to see different places around the world for sure! Thanks for watching :-)
great points sir love your way of teaching 🥰
Thank you so much :-)
Wonderful advice! We are working on bringing more content to show our authentic selves now. 👍🙌
Best of luck with it!
Excellent advice - keep it simple (that's always worked for me).
I totally agree! :-)
Thank you very much, very genuine thoughts, very authentic video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
My videos started off getting a good amount. Recently (the past few weeks) the views started dropping. I don’t know why.
@ thank you! 🙏🏾
Great advice as usual! Thank you!😊
Always a pleasure! Thanks for watching :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer My pleasure!!😊 I love the walk and talks!
Hi, Rob! 👋 I noticed the video title is in French - did you change any settings? It’s my native language, so that’s okay.🤗
Juliet, If you live in France? Google might? I had few comments in Spanish too on my TH-cam channel.
Newbie here ❤ thank you for sharing this information while sharing your beautiful scenery.
Thanks for watching :-)
Another great video Rob, albeit a little colder.😮 Don't forget to get to Peggy's cove for the lobster crawl!😊🦞🦞🦞🦞
I'd record a video there... but there's always lots of people ;-)
@RobtheMaritimer No Rob, I knew that was too many people.
That's great advice! Thanks for sharing :-)
Good talk, Rob 👍
Thanks for watching!
Good advice thank you.
Very nice view behind you.
Glad you liked it! Thank you :-)
Beautiful scenery 👌🏽 What are you using to film during your walks?
Thank you! I use my iPhone 14 Pro Max with a small handheld tripod and the DJI wireless mic :-)
Love this ❤ thank you!
My pleasure!
Great info! Getting watch hours has been tough for me. I think, for me, more "how to" videos might get me the hours I need. I hope. 😂✌️
Yes they certainly might help! Also, going "Live" helps a lot with watch hours too! Best of luck with it :-)
@RobtheMaritimer I'm still very shy but I'm getting better at the LIVES. Baby steps for me 🤣
Good advice. Thx
Thanks for watching!
Excellent Tips!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks mate.
My pleasure!
I also hate filming when people are around, but maybe that is the one thing you could do to grow as a content creator.
That's a great idea!
Hello Rob, thank you for sharing. This is informative. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
My pleasure!
Babble away. I learn so much from you!
Thank you for the kind words :-)
@ Hey Rob - found you through Alexa S. and Ty M. Based on your recs, found a quad case and also mounting device on Amazon (already have tripod / selfie stick). I’d like to order them to use for my walking videos but not sure how they work together. I’d love you to do a video explaining it! TIA!!!
@@ellenshealthykitchen That's great! I actually made a video on exactly this... how I use these things together to make my walk and talk videos. Hope this helps!

Great content. Thanks ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
TH-cam pushes videos for viewers based on their interest history. I got a viral video recently and I don't know it did lol.
Thanks man for the advices 🎉
Thanks for watching!
Thank you.
I did notice and yes I think it's awesome! It's something youtube did automatically :-)
@@RobtheMaritimerwow. The reach of the videos should certainly be exponential. I'm waiting for this feature on my channels. Success 🚀🚀🚀
What camera holder are you using?
I use a Joby Gorilla tripod with the Quadlock tripod adapter and case :-) I made a full video on how I make my outdoor videos here: th-cam.com/video/laxfUFDftS8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=CEBTJSnjUsBp0gD4
Your video is great, So awesome . . . you have got much views just in 12 hours. I'dont believe.
Thank you for the kind words :-)
Great advice!
How did you translate your vidéo in french? Is there a setup to do that ?
It is super cool!👍 And it is prity correct!
TH-cam does that automatically... it wasn't me :-)
"All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts".
Thanks for watching :-)
When I see people say they gave it a good 3+ years and it didn't work, I notice they only posted a handful of videos and half of them were random family vacation videos.
I have witnessed a channel with 1k+ subs uploading consistent well thought out videos but only get double digit views. Makes me believe the algo can dislike a channel 🤔
TH-cam is a completely different journey for everyone... there's no one reason for the success or failure of videos/channels... but a combination of things. Best of luck to you! :-)
one question sir tell us something about Camtasia plugins if u installed or going to install
I'm not sure what you're referring to by "Camtasia Plugins"?
Nice been listening to you too and might do some changes on my video and thank you for the babbling..lol
Haha! I can babble with the best of them!! ;) Thanks for watching :-)
Most people on youtube are content consumers and not content producers... something to think about ;-)
@@RobtheMaritimer Thank you and yes definitely worth thinking about. an amazing response. Happy Thanksgiving Rob
Meh. Did you read my mind? 🤔🤣
Haha maybe! ;)
Basically you still have to niche down no matter how you put it especially if you’re posting for over 5 years and still getting no views . Well we will see when I do start posting on here .
Identifying a niche and arguably more importantly, identifying who your target audience is, will definitely help a channel grow faster. Best of luck to you :-)
Happy Thanksgiving . 😊😇
And to you :-)
good video
Thank you :)
@ thank u so much
I stoppped posting comments because I think its a waste of time and energy, but because I'm still thinking of starting a TH-cam channel based on my profession I will comment here.
Thank you for commenting :-)
To soon? Been doing this 2 1/2 years. 2000 subs. 30 views per video. It's going nowhere. There is no new, it's a niche. Can't change that
If you’re happy with making videos in your niche and the views you’re getting, then that’s awesome! No need to change anything… just enjoy it :)
Hi Rob! I usually don't watch these kinds of videos... I saw the lake and I pressed play. But I have to say that I've loved everything about your video. Especially your personality and I can tell that you make videos from a good place. I find that bot so common. Thank you for the advice and motivation 🙏
I directly subscribed 👌
One question though, what is the microphone you are using? I'm a sound freak and I loved that technical aspect of the video 👌
Thank you :-) And it's the Atlantic Ocean, not a lake ;) I use the DJI Mic wireless mic... it has a receiver that plugs into my iPhone. I love it! Here's a direct link to it: amzn.to/3CZu9LW
@@RobtheMaritimer Not the mini, right? or it is the DJI Mic 2? 😁Or it is an old model?
@@lucidmindrevolution No not the mini, and not the DJI Mic 2... it's the version before the "2" which was just called the DJI Mic :)

I appreciate the feedback :-)
@RobtheMaritimer I think the intro being too long is definitely helpful though, I'll try that, I do a lot of production and editing, not happy with my views. I've only been at this seriously since last Jan, and got monetized in Oct, so not too bad I guess, I'm impatient!
Thanks for the sound advice
