- In episode 2 of my Tasmanian road trip we visit the amazing village of Queenstown where I attempt to shoot some surreal nightscapes.
This place has to be seen to be believed. It's literally a series of open cut mine sites, and it's kind of cross between ugly and beautiful.

Queenstown how amazing
It is really amazing.
Come for the cookies, stay for the photos!😂 lovely video as always.
Haha, same as me.
Beautiful work, as usual. I always look forward to watching your videos as I learn something new with each one.
I really appreciate that Steve
WOW!! yes the hole in the ground worked
Yes I was happy with it.
Wow! That first image, with the stars reflected in the pool....awesome!
Thanks so much for watching.
Wow you are one fantastic photographer I envy your talent and creativity! You are a great inspiration.
I'm really glad you like my work David, thank you.
You pulled it off. Love the reflection in the water. Awesome shots.
Thanks so much Bruce.
These must make your next calendar! Simply amazing.
I really appreciate you watching Walter
I love your road trip adventures Richard. I feel like I’m there with you. As for the results… absolutely outstanding! 🤩
Thanks so much for watching again Lisa. I have plenty more to come.
Big effort, big pay off there Richard, epic shots. Brilliant work.
Thanks as always for watching my friend.
Queenstown wow, love all you phtos from Tassi, the hole in the ground has just become my favourite. Thankyou
Thanks so much Phil. It is an amazing place thats for sure.
Fantastic images Richard!
Quite amazing how an ugly abandoned mining pit can become a great foreground for a beautiful nightscape panorama. Congrats finding beauty in an otherwise barren landscape.
Thanks Roberto. Yes it is my mantra . .to make ugly things beautiful under the stars.
I love Tassie, and great shots, I love the lake one best
Thanks a lot for tuning in Tony
Amazing to see the changes. When I was a kid growing up in Tasmania, there was no growth on the hills on the Eastern side of town at all due to the emissions from the smelters. nice to see nature slowly coming back!
Yes it's an amazing landscape Tim for sure.
Well Richard, I am really enjoy seeing your adventures! The photos you shot in Queenstown are beautiful. I really like the idea of the quick chicken dinners while out camping. Looking forward to your next video!
Thanks so much for tuning in Jerry, really appreciated.
Stunning scenery! Phenomenal nightscape images! Thank you for sharing with us! 🙏🏻
You're always welcome John. Thanks for watching.
Stunning!
Thank you Phillip
Richard, absolutely outstanding! What an inspiration.
Thanks for tuning in William
WoW, .... realy just WoW
As always I appreciate you watching my friend.
P. S, I do love your tassy vids, and you know I'm a big fan of your work
Very kind of you Suzie
Another great video and awesome shots Richard, this location is definitely on my bucket list now 😃
I really appreciate your comments Eric, thank you.
Every time I watch you work I'm left speechless by the results Richard. I'll leave my comment there as there is nothing left to say 😂. Enjoy the remainder of the long weekend 🙏🙏🙏
You're a very kind soul Izzy, thanks my friend.
Wow they turned out so well for all your trouble , love the shot with the crater. Glad the sky was clear for you. We have camped at Lake Burbury too beautiful place. Just love your videos, bringing back lots of memories.
Thanks so much for tuning in Liz.
Hi Richard! Was worth the trouble shooting looking down at the lake as it gave you a great angel to capture an awesome reflection of the stars, brilliant! Thank you for your work and passing along your experience to others!
Thank you so much for your great encouragement Kerry, really appreciated.
Another great episode, Richard! I absolutely love shooting around Queenstown!!
Thanks so much Andy. It's an amazing location isn't it.
Wow, blown away again Richard, very inspiring, thank you.
Thanks again for watching David.
Can't believe how well that pano above the water turned out 💪. Sure earnt your tea with that 1.
Haha, yeah I reckon you're right Craig.
Absolutely stunning you just amazed me
Thank you so much for watching my friend.
Living the life... oh my!!
Thanks for tuning in John.
As always Richard some incredible images you have captured, Thank you for taking us on this adventure with you.
I have been holding off watching your videos until I knew I was going to be able to get back out under the stars again, Victoria's weather has been dreadful lately for clear skies.
Watching one of your videos would make me jump on a plane and find some cloud free skies somewhere, Cheers
Haha, well I jumped on a plane and headed north .. but it's worse up here than at home ..!!! As always I appreciate you watching.
Cooking with Richard Tatti. That would be an amazing new channel 😁. Jokes aside, I loved the vlog. What an adventure! Also quite enjoyeable to see the rush of how a night shoot can be from time to time 😄👌. Looking forward to the next one!
Haha, well those would be very short videos ..!! Thanks for watching my friend.
Youre blessed with dark skies and the GC. Great vid, as usual, Richard
Thanks heaps for watching John.
Beautiful images Richard. Queenstown is a funny place. Appears to be old, rundown, multiple generations past it’s prime. Yet another dying small town. But it is a beautiful place in its simplicity and wild raw nature. Love it there up to and through the Tarkine to the north.
Looking forward to more Tassie content.
Yes it is very surreal, that's for sure Wayne. Thanks for watching.
You know I've been following a while now, but this is your best ever video and best pictures too. many thanks.
Wow, that's very kind of you to say Phil, thank you.
Yet another stunning video Richard! It was fun seeing you act like a kid in the candy store with your ear to ear smile. You really pulled off the Milky Way over the pit pano! You may have to relocate to Tasmania when the Tasmania Tourism Board sees how well you are promoting the area 😂.
I'd love to re-locate to Tasmania . .it's such a beautiful place Pat.
Wow…absolutely gorgeous nightscape images!!!
Thanks so much for taking a look Dan.
Wow, Richard, those are awesome Panos, amazing work. When I do panos, I always do the sky first, cos it doesn't matter if its cloudy for fg, also, I don't trust british weather, and the dark doesn't last as long here. The lake is probably green because of the mineral deposits from the mining. Penryn Quarry has a green lake in snowdonia national park in Wales, and the have the world's fastest zip line going over it ( which I went on BTW), but they said its from the mineral deposits that came from mining the slate.
That's very adventurous of you Suzie ..!!! Yes I do often do the sky first as well.
Great story and just quite brilliant images. Great vision and you have mastered the art of Night Sky photography Richard
You're very kind indeed Les, thank you.
Out of the hundreds, it seems, of great photos of yours I have to say that pano of the pit (first one) has to be up in your top ten. Outstanding and inspiring once again, thank you.
Very kind of you to say Mike, thank you.
That’s looked and felt a stressful evening!
It was full on for sure . .especially when filming a video.
Another fantastic video Richard, thanks for taking us along on your Tassie adventure. 👏
Thank you as always for watching Laurel
Great to be out on the road with you again Richard and looking forward to more of your adventures in Tasmania. As always, your B-roll and drone footage make for a really enjoyable watch, and your big pano @ 19:50 is stunning👌
Thanks a lot for watching Paul. As always I very much appreciate your comments.
These images are absolutely incredible Richard!
Thanks for looking, really appreciate it.
Another great and informative video and the images are just’Out of this World’
You're very kind David, thank you.
So sweet!
Thanks so much for watching.
Loved this video, Richard. I always enjoy your road trip episodes. I did laugh at the frantic activity as you set up the shots......gives me hope for my efforts!!!! Amazing shots and videography, as always.
Thanks a lot Simon. Yes it seems to become more frantic as the night progresses sometimes ..!!!
Wow!! That was awesome all those view all alround and the nightscape photos are epic !!!!
Glad you like it Luis.
Just concluded the video - what a shot! 34 total images in those panos! Wow! I'd sure enjoy a tutorial on planning and stitching together something that large, Richard!
Thanks for watching Chris. Yes it's pretty large but lots of people doing larger one's around.
One of my favourite spots in Tassie, beautiful images Richard
Thanks so much for following along Julie.
Just amazing video Richard and the images are mind blowing. I remember driving past this beautiful place last year in Hurry. Regret not stopping by and not having a nightscape image from here ❤❤❤ loved it!
Thanks heaps for watching.
Thanks for taking us along on your fantastic adventure Richard and sharing your practical tips. The challenges that come with this type of photography and ways to overcome them. I'm just glad you didn't have to deal with the wind as well on top of everything else at that location. Great inspiring, educational and practical content. Love this channel. Cheers
Yes the wind would have been horrendous at that spot. Thanks again for watching.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I dropped you an email. I know you are busy but check it out. I think you will appreciate my image of the aurora event on the 24th of April here in Tassie.
Wonderful shots, your images are a feast to the eyes !! Thank you.
Thank you so much for watching Amit.
Loving the Tasmanian adventure Richard. Amazing photos from this ep. Great work.
Always appreciate your support mate. Thank you.
Beautiful shots as usual Richard, really enjoying this series 👍
I very much appreciate you watching Michael
Awesome shots, it's changed a lot since we were there. Perfect night skies.
Thanks a lot for watching Greg.
usted el mejor de todos en este estilo de fotografia
You are very kind indeed my friend, thank you.
Great work mate. I’d love to see wineglass bay.
I'm too old to climb up there Troy ..!!! But it's a beautiful spot for sure.
oh the hole in the ground is my all time favourite Richard. Just stunning. Rob and I were laughing about your butter chicken...I'm sure you had that last time 😆. I'm off to 'Queenstown...NZ in a couple of weeks, will be looking for nightscapes there too!! Cheers
Haha, yes Carmel .. .I did buy up on the butter chicken dishes ..!!! NZ sounds wonderful. It will be cold over there.
Love to watch your inventive workflow. I’m going to Goblin Valley State Park in Utah next week - some of the darkest skies in the world. I’m going to shoot time lapses with the @zeapontech slider as well as Milky Way landscape pics with the sonyA7iv and sigma 24mm f2. Hoping to put your best practices to work. Thanks so much for these adventurous tutorials.
That sounds like an amazing trip. Hope it goes well.
As has already been said absolutely stunning images Richard! A very enjoyable video too. From the coffee and cookie at the rail museum to the look over the rail down at the quarry to the view of the heavens as you worked your setup for the shoot to the final images, loved it. Shooting the night sky with the new moon in a few days. Hoping for clear skies. All the best to you mate.
Thanks for your very kind comments David. All the best for your photography adventures.
Love the enthusiasm, content and the resulting photos. Bloody fantastic.
I have never done multi level panoramas but will have to give it a go.
Thanks for watching Leslie, always appreciated my friend.
Amazing images.
Thanks for watching Martyn
Almond Latte😂C'mon Richard, you having a laugh?🤣🤣Great video by the way, and what a location👌👌
Haha, yes quite hippy of me isn't it ..!!! Glad you enjoyed it.
These shots are amazing Richard. Especially given the effort required to get these sorts of images. Love your work ❤
Thanks so much for watching Stephen
Amazing shots, fantastic video! Clear skies, all the best to you!
Many thanks indeed for watching George.
Fantastic trip, amazing photos, thanks for this video Richard
Glad you liked it Mario
Another great video Richard, that one of the pit lake is truly brill, good bit of gymnastics on your part.
Yes it took quite a while to setup Phil.
Richard, thank you for your technical information and artistic elements. I am attempting to incorporate this into my own photo adventures here in California and the Sierra mountains. I also commend you for the videos and the production values that bring the viewer intimately along for the ride. Fantastic! Keep up the good work and thanks again.
I'm really pleased you enjoyed it Scott. All the best with your adventures.
Stunning again Richard 👍👍👍
Thanks so much Brian.
Fantastic adventure. A lot of effort was put into the image and it has paid off very well! Keep up the excellent work.
I really appreciate your comments Mike, thank you.
Fabulous photos Richard, you are making me homesick. I love the West Coast, I am going back in September to try for some Panos
I'm sure you'll do really well Kim.
Absolutely amazing. The place is amazing. I like how you mount the jet boil on a tripod
Yes it's a design I made myself . .and it works so well.
The shots are amazing Richard
Thanks again for watching Dennis
Absolutely beautiful images mate ! Well done, great vid as usual !
Thanks heaps for watching again Tim
Awsome pics mate, they were amazing, love the landscape :) well done as always.
Always appreciate you watching Alan mate.

❤
Amazing shots, fantastic video
Thanks so much Ibrahem
Wow that sky was amazing would love to shoot out there.
Great work.
Would also like to see how you process these images
Thanks a lot Michael. Yes it is a beautiful sky out there.
Amazing shots👍🏻
Thanks heaps for watching.
Great video Richard, the final images look so much better on the 27" screen, Facebook just doesn't do them Justice.
I'm always amazed at how much detail you get from a f1.8 lens you must be pushing the exposure in lightroom quite a bit.
Thanks as always Keith. The light transmission of these Nikon primes is excellent but I certainly lift the shadow detail in Lightroom as well.
Absolutely stunning once again Richard, and a really excellent road trip video, I also really enjoyed your recent chat with young Andrew
Thanks Alasdair . .and I also enjoyed your chat with Andrew. All the best mate.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I hope you could understand me lol
My mum was from Skye, so it was lovely to hear you had visited there a few years ago
@@amacmedia3221 I loved Skye .. In fact Scotland was my favourite part of the UK.
@@nightscapeimages.richard if you ever get a chance to return, the area of assynt in Sutherland is spectacular (my dad was from there), which is on the mainland but a bit further north.
Hopefully heading there in a few months to try out all that I’ve learnt from your channel
So beautiful 😻
Ain’t that place so magnificent 😱 and the sky !
😳 I wish I’d see this around here!!!
And Richard, stop eating sugar and cookies. Not good for health !
😝
Yes it is a very interesting place Carole. I do have a sweet tooth unfortunately.
@@nightscapeimages.richard
For real 😮 … didn’t know that 😝
Wow! Awesome shots! Your videos are just so enjoyable due to your comfortable and easy going demeanor. Btw...your production values are outstanding! Thank you for your efforts and dedication Richard!
That's very kind of you indeed Peter, thanks for your great support.
you should invest in a step for your door latch, it will help you get into your top cargo carrier, I have one for my suv and it's much easier on the knees.
I do have one somewhere Kendra . .but as you saw . .I had stuff everywhere in the car.
Hi Richard. I loved your commentry on this one. I guessed beforehand, that Queenstown was a mining town. It looks like a great place to visit. Question : you mentioned the problem of that big pano - would you take one during the day to check out if it was possible ? The final shots were great ( as usual ). It must be great to live somehwere like this, awesome backdrops plus good weather. Have fun on the remainder of your trip
Yes not a bad idea to take a pano during the day to check. But when I was there it was packed with tourists during daylight. Thanks again for watching.
Fantastic Richard, at 60 seconds how did you stop the lights from the city not blowing out?
Well it's not a very large place Rob . .so the lights are not very bright. Having said that, I did soften them in post.
At 18:16 the caution that seems to be universal among Benro Polaris early adopters. It’s a difficult relationship. Trust is going to take some time to develop. Mine at the moment is out in the dark and cold shooting a holy grail pathlapse. At least that’s it given assignment.
Yes I have a lot of friends who are exploring the Benro Polaris. Some with great results. I'm still waiting to see what eventuates. The only use I would have for it would be automated tracked panoramas.
Stunning results Richard! Am really enjoying your Tasmania mania, thank you. What panorama stitching software are you using nowadays? Cheers, Paul.
Thanks heaps for watching Paul. I did this one in Photoshop but I do like Microsoft ICE as well. I also have PtGui but I don't use it much.
Re: Queenstown
Where is everyone? Such a great location, and such empty!
There were plenty of tourists during the daytime, I had to dodge them to make the video.... deserted at night.
Complimenti fai delle foto fantastiche pure io ho la Z7ii e la Z6II e lo Z 20 !,8 ma in Italia non è possibile fare la via lattea come in Australia,Un Caro saluto❤
Thanks so much for watching my friend, I really appreciate it.
Hi Richard, love your videos! On a side note…do you rate the outback? Thinking of getting one.
Thanks a lot Jules. Yes I love the Outback. Best car I've ever owned.
Thanks for another informative and inspirational video.
Do you use a custom white balance with your Ha modified camera?
Thanks Chuck. Yes I set the white balance to 3300k with an added 1.5 of green tint. But having said that I still adjust it in post.
Hi Richard everybody is raving about 14mm astro lens are you gunna get one??
I have the Nikon 14-24 f2.8 and the Laowa 15mm f2 .. but I don't use that focal length very much.
Great going Richard. Once in the Video you mentioned Benro Polaris. Whats the difference between Benro Polaris and this Star Adventurer Mini ?
Well the Polaris is an automated system that you program and set and forget. . it will then shoot the panorama .. when it works. The Mini is a simple tracker.
