Thank you for sharing your expertise. Looking to start a Twitch channel streaming retro video games. I make retro video game remix songs, so oftentimes I get requests to actually play the games that I sample for my songs. Oh, and my favorite Retro Game is Super Mario 3.
Took an hour of Googling various forms of the question til I found your vid. Thank you so much. dunno how all these other articles and Reddit forums couldn't just explain it like you just did.
Thank you for this. I've been pulling my hair out trying to use my Elgato with retro games and could not figure out WHY the game was coming through as a stretched 16:9. Not one other guide or even tech support said my upscaler was the issue (literally using the cheapest one you said NOT to use). I'm going to go get a RetroTink now so I can stop hating new technology. XD
My favorite was timesplitters future perfect original Xbox. I absolutely loved this game growing up and still love to play it. And thank you so much for the video as I'm about to start my collection this coming month and wanna stream it.
Thank you so much I plan on playing lots of n64/ GameCube games 💜 paper Mario, starfox , skys of Arcadia just gotta wait a few more weeks so I can save up for more tech ! ☺️
4:12 the expensive ‘line doublers’ don’t introduce lag, the monitor/modern tv introduce lag when they convert the signal. See RetroRGB TH-cam channel on the retrotink.
Hi James, I just found your video, for me I use the Avermedia Game Capture HD II because it records PS2, PS3, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. For older consoles like PS2/3 I just needed to get a Component cable, on PS2 it doesn't record in 1080p but I think it has a decent video quality (you can see on my Splinter Cell videos). As for PS3, it does record in HD but there's a catch, for ex: if the Game is in 720p you can only record in 720p but if it runs at 1080p you can record in 1080p. This week I bought more PS2/3 Games and I want to record more Gameplays so I will keep using that capture card for a little longer. For PC I'm using the Avermedia Live Gamer Ultra 4K, I got it last Summer. All the best to you.
Didn't know there were more options, awesome! The MINI AV2HDMI looks similar to a brand I use called Digiteck, except it doesn't stretch it to 16:9 it costs roughly $30AU. For sure good if you have a lower budget
Great video, and really useful. From someone who just started streaming retro games, I wish I would have had this video sooner. Cheers, and I just subbed to your channel.
I have been dabbling in retro games for the past 3 years or so and im only just now starting to figure out how scalers and capture cards work thanks for this easier to understand explanation. By the way i love me some megaman or rockman as he is known here in japan.
Thanks bro, I just started this recently because I love the classic consoles and games, and it's been great except for the small streaming screen and no external volume on OBS
I know there is something to be said for original hardware, but I would use an emulator for most of these consoles. The biggest difficulties come in when dealing with legacy PC games. Stuff from the end of the 90s. Some of the Win95/98 stuff can be really hard to get working in a VM or any other emulation. I went so far as to build a Win98 PC to get a few specific titles up and running properly.
I'm sorry if I'm late but where did you get the abstract pikachu and dumbledore paintings? I know you have more but did you paint them or did you buy? They're so pretty
Hi I happened upon this video while looking for something specific related to streaming old games. I know the focus of this video is mainly regarding tech side of things, but I was wondering about the copyright and fair use side. When streaming older games is it safe to have the game's music on? I ask because GTA vice city has a lot of actual songs in it and the original songs are not even there on the remasters because the copyright expired for the game's publishers. There's also games like old need for speed games with really popular songs on there. I'm just worried if my channel can get deleted just for streaming one of these...
I wanna start streaming my speedruns of Ninja Gaiden! All time favourite game on the NES. Currently 16th place but never streamed or used a capture card :) thanks for the advice!!
Crash bash from the PS1 crash tag team racing from the PS2 I don't think these games will ever come back I like other games as well but I can't remember them off the top of my head these are just the two that I keep talking about and wish they'd come back possibly with a remake with online capabilities and possibly more characters to unlock
How do ppl get literally like an hd display from retro games like nfl street 2? Is it cuz i play off a onn tv and use elgato to transfer and display on a monitor to then stream off obs?
Thank you so much I'm excited to start streaming my old school game play as for favorite games on old school consoles: Nintendo: Super Mario 3 SNES: Super Mario All Stars Sega: sonic & knuckles 32x: virtual Racing PS1: Legend of the Dragoon PS2: Kingdom Hearts PS3: The Darkness GameBoy: Dr. Mario Sega Game Gear: Addams Family Values GBA: Castlevania Aria of Sorrow PSP: Ridge Racer DS: Chrono Trigger
I wish I understood technology.. I wish I were smort. But my fav retro game is prob Sonic but esp Sonic & Knuckles and then plugging the other Sonic games into it to play as Knuckles.
I've got to say my favorite retro game is Super Mario Bros 3. I got a version of that game first on the super nintendo and later on for my gameboy sp. As a kid I was able to speed run that thing I don't even remember how I learn all the little secrets 😁
Is there anything better than the elgato because every time I use it that thing crashes or overheats and shuts down and f**** up my video quality it even shuts off so that's why I hate elgato so is there anything better than garbage el gato
I used to like Kirby’s adventure but then I saw an artist’s depiction of a creature Kirby’s eaten, and you can see Kirby’s innards and his smiling face inside his stomach.
I tried the mclassic but I wasn't overly fond of how I processed a lot of games. CTR actually looked pretty great, but a lot of games just seemed a bit off to me. Personal preference thing.
1) I much prefer the experience on original hardware with a CRT, since it's the way I grew up experiencing these games. 2) Emulators are in a bit of a legal gray area. Mostly the first reason, but the second reason is nice to have covered.
u didnt bring the fkcin way directly all of them are sh!t quality i perfer pc the issue is cant upload memory card to pc which is stupid they should make converter
I prefer playing. on original hardware with a CRT TV. It's how I experienced the games growing up, and the reliving that experience is what's most important to me.
Then stop fucking watching and move on with your life. Jesus Christ, why do you feel compelled to go out of your way to leave a shitty comment on a video that someone else put hours of work into and released for free? You forgot there's a human on the receiving end of these comments? Be a better person.
OMGeeeeeee how on earth have I never found this video until NOW?! Oh yeah….I’m old and I live under a rock apparently 🤣🥸 Thank you for such a great description and SHOWING the actual visual differences 👍🏼❤️
Thanks for this, James! This is all info I literally just started looking into to try and start streaming/recording my older console stuff!!
Thank you for sharing your expertise. Looking to start a Twitch channel streaming retro video games. I make retro video game remix songs, so oftentimes I get requests to actually play the games that I sample for my songs.

that's cool man!
Took an hour of Googling various forms of the question til I found your vid. Thank you so much. dunno how all these other articles and Reddit forums couldn't just explain it like you just did.
Glad my video helped! It's a surprisingly complicated topic so I know that frustration very well.

This was super helpful! I currently stream Sonic 2 but looking to add PS1 games in the mix like CTR and Spyro!
Those are my favorites too , Spyro was hard af for me bc I always got lost
Good quality video my guy
Thank you so much I plan on playing lots of n64/ GameCube games 💜 paper Mario, starfox , skys of Arcadia just gotta wait a few more weeks so I can save up for more tech ! ☺️
I’m having trouble finding a similar A/V switcher like the Radio Shack one you have. Any suggestions on where to find one? Thanks!! And great video!!
Your voice is so nice to listen to! And I learned something lol BUT
Do you have Mario Kart Double Dash?
4:12 the expensive ‘line doublers’ don’t introduce lag, the monitor/modern tv introduce lag when they convert the signal. See RetroRGB TH-cam channel on the retrotink.
Great cause! That was refreshing 👍🏾

I want to stream on twitch someday and play old video games that I never played in my childhood

Shoutout to my Twitch community for already raising over $600 for the cause!! www.twitch.tv/jameschats
I loved playing Super Mario Land and The Lion King games on our Super Nintendo system..
Does the Retrotink 5x Pro offer any improvements over this one for streaming like this? Also, could you upscale to 1080p if you wanted to?
How does all this stuff work with the infrared console guns for games that require them though?
Arcade: Pac-Man
Atari 2600: Pitfall!
NES: Super Mario Bros. 3
Genesis: Sonic The Hedgehog
SNES: Super Mario World
Nice list.

I'm watching this so I can learn to speedrun Smartball for the SNES.
Excelent video bro, so helpful. It is more easy play with an emulator but i don't know if you can stream that
Do you know the name of the radioshack switcher? I am trying to find the same one
You ever find one? I’m looking too
I wanna start streaming my speedruns of Ninja Gaiden! All time favourite game on the NES. Currently 16th place but never streamed or used a capture card :) thanks for the advice!!

my favorite retro video game is Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic CD
Does the gv-usb2 bypass the need for an upscaler?
I got a cheap vhs to dvd converter and OBS to stream to my twitch ❤️
well the retro tink products have been sold out for about 2 months.... looks like im doing the 35 buck one. Thanks for the vid!
I wish I understood technology.. I wish I were smort. But my fav retro game is prob Sonic but esp Sonic & Knuckles and then plugging the other Sonic games into it to play as Knuckles.
I bought and now use a HDMI converter for newer TVs like I have and it enhances better graphics for the ps2 is that fine for streaming you think ?
My favorite retro games are definitely dk country, ff7, and OoT.
Mario 64 is my favorite retro game
OH! I've been wondering about this because I just got a Nintendo 64!
Just use an emulator on your PC and you can literally capture the gameplay from stream labs
I love final fantasy IX
I smacked the Subscribe button as soon as you said “Diversity and Representation”! 💖
My favorite retro video game is tied with donkey Kong country and super Mario world.
I've got to say my favorite retro game is Super Mario Bros 3. I got a version of that game first on the super nintendo and later on for my gameboy sp. As a kid I was able to speed run that thing I don't even remember how I learn all the little secrets 😁
a quick question: for both Twitch and Facebook Gaming, can i use an emulator like ePSXe to stream?
I don't see why you couldn't
Could I get a link for the splitter
It’s a tie between crash bandicoot 3 , Crash bandicoot tag team racing, Spyro the dragon , twisted metal 2 , Rugrats search for reptar
Lego Star Wars ii TOT!
SUPER MARIO 1! 💗
They make a 60ish $ retro tink that can do up to s-video
Ok. So I think I’m lost in what I’m looking for in a switcher.
Is there anything better than the elgato because every time I use it that thing crashes or overheats and shuts down and f**** up my video quality it even shuts off so that's why I hate elgato so is there anything better than garbage el gato
Question for everyone do you guys stream Under the actual game or under retro category ???
I typically stream under the game title when possible since there's less competition for new viewers in the category.
I used to like Kirby’s adventure but then I saw an artist’s depiction of a creature Kirby’s eaten, and you can see Kirby’s innards and his smiling face inside his stomach.
Can I use emulators on Twitch?
Megaman legends PS1, mario/duck hunt NES
Ff6-10 all the wayyy
and why to do all that just download an emulator on your pc
How about mClassic?
I tried the mclassic but I wasn't overly fond of how I processed a lot of games. CTR actually looked pretty great, but a lot of games just seemed a bit off to me. Personal preference thing.
Gunstar Heros
So why can’t you just use an emulator?
1) I much prefer the experience on original hardware with a CRT, since it's the way I grew up experiencing these games.
2) Emulators are in a bit of a legal gray area.
Mostly the first reason, but the second reason is nice to have covered.
@@JamesChats it's definitely possible to emulate games 100% legally, but i also like playing on real hardware for the same reasons you do
i thought i heard kermit the frog
Gunstar Heroes.

@@JamesChats so you could get better to increase your views…. It’s obvious you don’t embrace critics the way I embrace them🤷🏾♂️
just download a sega emulator to pc lol
No thanks, I very clearly prefer playing on original hardware.
Omg nails on the chalkboard non stop talking about non sense just show it instead of getting channel video time DAM
