  • Self-organization is one of the key concepts in Scrum (and Agile for that matter). But if the Scrum Team and the Development team are self-organizing, well, what does a Scrum Master do then?

    i loved this episode. I recently joined a very mature scrum team and was worried about what i would be doing since they were mature and high performing. now i know i need to focus on the scrum events and coaching. same thing my predicesor said to me.

    Good presentation.
    Can we have another video based on new scrum guide? :-)

      I believe there is no real need for another video on this topic. The concepts I'm talking about in this video didn't change with release on the new Scrum Guide. Yes, we say 'self-managing Scrum Team' instead of 'self-organizing Dev Team', but it didn't change the need for letting people find the best approach themselves, letting them fail to learn and organize their work without anyone telling them how to do it.

    Great video! I loved it because of the practical example. Something like having a glimpse of the way an experienced Scrum Master works. Thanks!

    I could be completely off the mark, but I think my go-to would be to establish from the beginning a set of criteria that I encourage the team to work through before asking me as the Scrum Master to intervene (and of course, explain the 'why' behind the barrier). Chief among those would be the establishment of Root Cause Analysis. In Daria's scenario, if they come to me, I ask: have you employed RCA? Yes? Great, and what have you found to be the source of the issue? If it's something to do with the coding or multiple issues with Dev errors being found, I would tell the Dev team to be patient, and let the QA procure quality work. However, if the RCA shows that it's a lackadaisical approach by the QA team, then yes, of course I'm going to step in and find the RCA for that: are they unmotivated, low morale, etc, and determine from there how to get them back on track, as well as plan to avoid it in future sprints. Any thoughts? I'm a bit new to this role, so I appreciate your assistance and coaching!

      I think the difficulty in self-management is not only from the Scrum Master point of view. It is also something that teams not working in an agile environment need to learn as well. That's a big spike in responsibility that they might not have been ready for.
      If before you were a programmer on the team and the only thing you did was to write code all day, in a Scrum Team you are accountable for design, estimates, understanding the product, etc. AND the success of the whole team. You might have written you code, but if the QA couldn't finish the work by the end of the sprint and your user story is not done, you still have failed as a team.
      Having some working agreements can definitely help! And, as you suggested, providing some tools and practices, like RCA, is a great way to help your team self-manage without your intervention.

      I might do it in the future. It can be a good continuation of the Agile metrics series

    If this is not an impediment then what is actually an impediment? Can you give me an example??

    • @ScrumMastered
      @ScrumMastered  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Impediment is something that the Scrum team cannot solve within the boundaries of self-management. Depending on the organizatio it may be different, but it usually is related to organization processes, rather than the team's internal issues.
