I really love seeing someone play who understands the little bits they don't bother subtitling! I don't think I've ever seen someone who's actually studied the language properly play this game. It's great for this series specifically, especially because this game isn't just translated, it's "localized". They change things from the direct translation to make more sense to an english speaking audience, because a lot of causal comparisons, pop culture references, etc. don't translate. This series is what I'd call "aggressively Japanese" so having someone who's lived there and knows the language well playing adds a lot!
@@StinkyBuster When it's professionally done yeah, I just personally read a lot of fan translations of things that are direct translations *relatively* unchanged from the original text. I guess for most videogames they'd all be professionally translated (and thus localized) in the official western releases aside from games like Kurohyou that were never released in the west and were fan translated.
Just found myself watching this series. It's a lot of fun to see you discover the game for yourself at a nice slow-burn pace. The RGG games are all an experince you have to savor. Small note about Yakuza 0 btw.. The game is pretty "on the rails" for the first 4 chapters (this tends to be the case with every RGG game as they slowly introduce you to the mechanics). After that, the game starts opening up a lot more, give you a lot more side-content to do and allow you to roam around at your own pace.
I really like how you're truly taking your time to analyze the story. Yakuza 0 is such a complex game so it's a nice change for a playthrough ! The way you're even translating some words even add a lot of depth to the characters. Can't wait to see you try the substories too ! Everything's coming step by step and it's nice seeing you already having fun on it ! And don't forget to try the other karaoke songs too ! See you next time !
Incredibly happy that you're continuing! Definitely don't feel pressured (no matter how ravenous we Yakuza fans can be lol) to rush through. These games can be HUGE depending on how much you plan on doing, so the last thing I'd want is for you to get burned out. Looking forward to your continued insight along your Yakuza journey! Just as a heads-up: There's a rare but still possible bug with the save system. If you save the game, make SURE that you see the "game saved" text. If not, the next time you open your inventory, it'll corrupt it. If you save again after it's corrupted, it's bad news. Thankfully this can be fixed by just saving until you get the text that the game was saved. Then you're all good. And as a tip, I recommend seeking out Utsunomiya Bob at the shrine in Kamurocho. You'll, uh, know him when you see him lol.
55:53 Chinpira - yakuza slang for low level criminals, street punks etc. Earned a sub. Can't wait for you to a) sing the other song Kiryu could sing in a Karaoke b) get to chapter 4.
Maybe you've figured it out by the time you read this comment, but on the map the orange buildings are restaurants, yellow are stores, and purple are minigames. Also think of the randos jumping you on the street as random encounters in an RPG. This game is like a JRPG with a 3D Beat em up style combat.
I'm loving watching you play this game, and all your insights into the language and culture, the choices in tone and word choices, etc. Just a couple tips: *1)* Don't forget to use your Heat moves! As you dish out damage, your Heat gauge will build. When Kiryu starts looking like he's glowing or on fire, you can often hit Y to do a special move. You can usually do this when you're standing over an enemy who is knocked down, when you're holding a weapon or object, when you're grappling an enemy, or when you and the enemy are close to a wall (I forget if you need to grapple them for the wall smash attack). Take advantage of these powerful moves often, as you're just wasting it if it goes unused. Also, getting hit depletes your Heat gauge, so it's better to use it than to lose it! *2)* You were correct to notice that the coloured buildings on the mini-map are ones you can enter. I think the yellow ones are stores, the orange ones are restaurants, and the purple ones are for activities like that billiards hall you found. Not sure why you couldn't enter some of them, but I'm pretty sure it's just because it's so early in the game. Progress the main story a bit more and I'm sure they will become accessible.

This is so refreshing, it's always lovely to see you getting into a favorite series of mine so much :D but having someone who is fluent in japanese like yourself explain the nuances of their speech makes this entire playthrough even more exciting for some like me who only has a noob knowledge of the language and has definitely missed a vast majority of them :D
After having restarted playing Yakuza 0 after having it backlogged for years, your first playthrough vid popped up for me since I'd been searching for tips on some minigames recently, and I'm so happy to have discovered your channel! Your insight with the language and culture are incredibly interesting and fun to hear about, as while it's clear that Sega's done a great job localizing these games, there's some concepts and things that can't be easily translated or conveyed. I loved hearing the translation that one of goons' lines about Kiryu's feet stinking! 🤣I appreciate hearing about when the speech level of formality changes, since I struggle to hear/recognize it outside of extremely rude or extremely polite speaking. It's incredible how in sync you are with Kiryu, too! 😄
This is my first time with this Yakuza and hearing you theorize and go in depth about what they were saying at the beginning was so interesting and entertaining. The moment @38:41 sent me 😂😂😂😂 Also @57:56 it is definitely fascinating, i love hear you translate what is being said. Also some how you manage to leave your playthroughs ending at the perfect spot for cliffhangers. I hate it because I have to know but I love it because it leaves me wanting more.
I'm so happy you're continuing this series 😭Trust me the plot gets real thicc and real juicy. Yakuza is one of those games that looks like it's for the boys but real ones know it's a soap opera for the fems and thems. Also buff men. Many many buff men. I love that you make Kiryu sound so cool but in my mind he's just kinda a dumbass especially in this game🤣 . Also places you can enter are colored on the map, although some places you can't go in at certain points of the story (You can tell when the music gets serious). You can always buy healing items at popo conviencence stores and any pharmacies. Check the map from the menu if you get lost and enjoy!
This is one of my favorite games of all time! Your insight is teaching me so much I never knew about language and culture, and you're helping me deepen my understanding of the characters and the story as a whole. Really hope to see you play this game through to the end, I'm subbed!
Already the best Yakuza 0 playthrough I've seen. Your insight and understanding of Japanese culture is dope! I hope you fall in love with this and check out the whole series
Real quick on the finger thing: Back in the olden days of the samurai, criminals were tattoed and are forced cut off their pinky fingers. The finger removal is so that they are unable to wield a sword on their dominant hand. And the tattoing of their bodies was made to identify what crime they have done. The tattoing was latered used by Yakuza as a means to show their loyalty to the life. The more complex the Irezumi, the more in the crime life they are.
Interesting, I didn't realize the origins went back that far. I guess the yakuza appropriated the tattoos as a mark of pride. I believe any kind of tattoo is still considered taboo by the rest of modern Japanese society.
They have begun to dub this series with Yakuza 7. But after playing 0-6 in Japanese, I can't get used to the English VAs, even though they do a good job.
The analysis about the three lieutenants is really interesting and worth noting that those same three had face capture technology on their voice actors due to their fame in Japan as actors in yakuza movies! There's actually a few more down the line if I remember right in just 0! Also for rankings, it's typically Chairman (the head honcho of multiple yakuza groups) > Patriarchs (like the mafia dons of a family) > Captains (right-hand man) > Lieutenants > Sergeants > everyone lower like Kiryu p.s. bikes are the best weapons to grab in a fight in these games
I really like the depth of analysis you’re putting into this, it adds a new layer of complexity and interest to a game that is probably my all time favourite game. Definitely earned a sub from this and I’ll keep watching! Just make sure you keep an eye on the top right corner of the screen because that’s where action prompts show up. Heat actions and environmental items are your friend, especially bikes. Oh and also that lemon drink is in one of the games as a consumable, can’t remember if it’s in 0 or the later ones. Oh and you couldn’t get into the purple buildings because they’re locked until chapter 2
You've lived in Japan before and can read, huh? 0 is set in 1988, so the atmosphere is quite different from now. I love the way you get drawn into the story so quickly that you stop playing to explain things, or swing your bike around and take down enemies with joy. I laughed when I saw you get angry after being told in Japanese that your feet stink lol. Incidentally, the scary trio of executives at the Tojo Clan headquarters are real Japanese actors
All this insight and translation information add so much to this playthrough. Even for me who 100% this game and the sixth other one of this series and lived couple of years in Japan. You gain a subscriber here. Can't wait for the rest. Good job! 👍
yellow buildings on the map are stores like don quijote, ebisu pawn and other convience stores. you can buy healing items for your health and heat there. orange buildings are resturants and bars. purple buildings are for entertainment like arcades and mahjong parlours. there are also blue buildings typically reserved for story locations but some can be entered outside of those contexts
I love your insight on the Japanese language and your experience being in Japan hopefully you play the rest of the series because your in for a wild ride
As someone who has absorbed Japanese because of anime, its so interesting to notice the difference between the actual voice line and translation while playing this game. Im so happy to see you noticing the same things. This game is mostly fine but in some later games, the difference is a bit too much because the japanese verbage is so much cooler than the translation.
Kiryu canonically doesn’t kill. All the stuff in gameplay can be considered non canon as despite doing things that WOULD kill in real life, the enemies just get back up at the end of battle and are just slightly beat up.
