    That lube is similar to Acculube LS-10. I love the stuff. I find it less messy as well compared to using a cutting oil. LS-10 Smells better then oil. It is Vegetable based.

    Those are the same engine mounts I’ve used. When you get around to installing, you may want to initially set so the prop shaft is a tad bit high in the shaft log. These mount do settle quickly, most of it in a day or so. Check hight adjustments again in a week, then two months, a year and finally every two years. Most of the time you will find all you need to do is raise the two equally that carries the most weight, the one’s under the engine. On second thought looking at a previous video it looks like all your mounts may have similar weight sharing ( not like mine).

    OK heres the deal, there are different lubes and coolants for different applications. for tapping, boring, and reaming use cutting oil. if your surface grinding or drilling you want to use water with a rust inhibitor such as water soluble oil or i like antifreeze. mix it thin. blew thought 3.00 plate with 1.750 silver/demimg on bridgeport on auto feed. I'll even us it on a roughing mill.

    once you get the puddle correct try and concentrate on keeping an even speed and correct angle, trying to react to fluctuations as you see them usually just puts you behind the 8 ball because your reacting to stuff thats already happened, it may feel counter intuitive but it produces better results. its especially noticeable with TIG welding but applies to all processes including oxy and plasma cutting. once worked with a bloke who used a piano timer to time the dabs when TIG welding.i use much faster dabs so it wasn't for me ,but it worked well for him he got very nice results.

    Happy New Year, Stu! Nothing better than a Dangar Marine video to start the day! :)
    Even a very small pilot hole would make a big difference to your hole quality (roundness, finish, location...), and would be easier on your press. Keep in mind that the center of the drill is not turning as fast as the outside edges. Matter of fact, the exact center isn't turning at all relative to the metal. Without a pilot hole, you're trying to push the tip thru the metal, requiring significant force. A small, perhaps 4mm dia, pilot hole would help a lot. No need to step up, just go 4mm then 18mm.
    Keep up the great work, sir!

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I'll try experimenting with different size pilot holes to see which works best on the next ones. The other thing I like about no pilot hole is that you can fill the start of the hole with lube and it won't just run out the pilot hole.

  • @Route66Sprint

    I'm a fabricator in the US, so I really enjoyed this video. I use plasma cutters pretty often. For thick materials like you are cutting...I'd just run it wide open and adjust the speed to keep it from blowing back. Also, you are right about running through the end of the work to keep the tip cleaner. Keep up the nice work, and ignore all the safety nuts. In the US, must of us who are self employed and don't have a Safety Manager to watch us, work the same way as you...well, except we wear shoes. :)

    Hi Stu, I'm not pro welder but just on the subject of welding I noticed at 8:55 while you were tacking up, you held the welder clamp with both hands. While this is fine is does limit the amount of control over the tip of the rod especially on a new rod. If you try and hold the clamp with your right hand and hold the actual rod with your left hand as close as possible to the weld pole as your glove can take. I find at helps and awful lot. Also being in a comfortable position I find is so important to a good weld. Keep up the great work Stu. Love the project

    On your drilling and pilot holes, for small sizes like 3/4, just do one small pilot drill the same size as the chisel point of the drill (the bit that doesn't really cut). Drills only grab when the step up in size from pilot to final is too small.

    Pilot holes make the work easier, less stress on equipment and quicker cutting.
    I grind my own bits, and the edge will last longer with a pilot hole.
    The harder the material, the more you need a pilot, mild steel may allow for a one shot drilling process, but, harder material will not be so easy.

    Pre-heat your work.
    The Boeing Lube helps keep the MIG torch nozzle from fouling. You can also apply a thin film to the work piece to help reduce spatter from sticking. I even put a very lite film on my welding helmet viewing lens.

    you''re not alone Gold Whisperer! since we're almost in a new year (here) and Stu is already..... that clock in the shop, since it hasn't moved in ages, can you change it to 5 after 5 instead of quarter to? that way we know it's 5 o'clock somewhere, not that we need an excuse to drink but it's a good one! Another job off the checklist...that baby's gettin handy!!

    Hi Stu
    With regard to any “solid” lube, they work best if you dip the drill bit into them and fill the flutes. That way, as the bit heats up, the lubricant flows down into the piece you are drilling helping to keep everything cool and.....well.....lubed.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, I'll give that a go.

    This my be obvious (so I apologize) but have you considered sharpening those expensive drill bits when they get dodgy? It would be cheaper, and having a sharp spare would end up being faster than taking the time to go buy one.
    Just a thought. Cheers mate.

      I have been sharpening them on a Tormek stone. I'm going to look up if there is a jig available to keen them locked into the correct angle and then maybe do a vid on that.

    Stu, north of the equator you rarely see pet chickens. So, I have to ask - does each one have a name, or just your favorites? Also, can they learn to respond to commands, like dogs do? I realize that I am off topic (engine mounts), but you are the one who is turning the fowls into YT star performers - and to me they seem to be great candidates for petdom. 🐓🦆👍

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We only have three so they all have names, and although they don't have a dogs command of language they will come when called. They also each have very distinct personalities. The best thing is they weed the garden, eat the spiders and insects and lay eggs too! :)

    Should the lock nuts not be on the bottom, the load is pushing down and the single but could work it's way downwards.
    Happy New year from Scotland.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The weight of the engine pressing down stops the bottom nut from rotating. As the top nuts are under no load they need to be a pair.

    Hi Stu, hope you had a safe and happy New Year. We can see the smoke building outside, stay safe with your fire fighting, as of Jan 1. Five states of Australia are alight and the authorities have admitted there is no hope of putting them out before mother nature wants them out. Be extra careful this Friday, another 40 Deg C day with high winds.

    I've never seen engine mounts like the one's originally on your engine, the new ones you are using are common out here. The hole where the bolt for the engine mount needs to be a little bigger so the bolt moves freely through the hole. If you don't have any movement your not going to be able to trim out the engine as the bolts will be binding up. Welding is all about working the puddle sometimes I'm using two rods tig welding with 7018 the metal is too thin or a big gap. When you've burned 1000lbs or more of 7018 in the last couple decades it becomes second nature. My welds have been field tested in real world situations hundreds of tons of force applied to them. All stick welding I've only used a mig welder 3-4 times in 28 years of being around steel fab.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point about the binding as the angle changes. I'll get the die grinder onto them to make a small amount of clearance.

    Always keep a roll of 'keyway belt' on hand, whether ashore or at sea. It will get you home and finish your tasks without having to run to the belt shop. 30 years as a master maintenance Tech taught me that, plus a few decades of sailing and motoring...

    I think a 10 gauge run should give you a tonne per inch strength, given no movement is possible in the joint, ie both sides welded. The reason we fully weld is to keep corrosion out, thats a good reason even for mounts
    If it was me and it isnt, do a penetration run with a hot 10, then pad weld the undercut out at less amps
    also be aware some rods are better than others, I like CIG Satincraft especially downhand.
    its important that root run is clear of slag and dust, warm plate is better to weld on than cold.
    Fill whatever craters you get on the ends with weld, again a hot 10, this because it doesnt get to run long filling a hole
    radial drills are usually capable of not relying on pilot holes, if its clamped work it shouldnt move,
    we could drill 3" but the thing was massive, like you could live inside it
    centre punch the start to mark so the bit doesnt wander
    best for the year

      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point, any gaps would definitely trap water and start to rust.

    Stu: With resilient mounts, when doing the shaft alignment, you need to account for the mount deflection caused by the weight of the inboard shaft end, so that the stuffing gland is not required to act as a bearing. The mount company should be able to give you a procedure for doing this. Basically it involves centering the shaft in the stuffing gland and adding weight onto the end of the gear to mimic the shaft weight so the mounts deflect the right amount, then aligning shaft to gear, and then removing the weights and the shaft gland centering support. Greg
