Sitting here drinking my coffee and smiling because we all have a learning curve trying new things and getting used to them.
God bless you and enjoy yourself..

The simmer ring only controls the heat getting to the source, it's still burning the fuel at the same rate. A cover on the pot, a windshield and filling up with more meths would have got it to a boil. I'm cooking eggs on my Firebox (bigger version), Trangia and Ridgemonkey in the back yard this afternoon.

To start off the firebox instead of firelighters a cheap and easy way is to rub cotton wool balls in Vaseline and light in usual way. I keep them in a Chinese takeaway plastic box. Lightweight and non smelly.

The Firebox Nano is brilliant, I use mine with a Trangia and cook in my Ridgemonkey compact toaster.
Firebox sell a little windshield to stop the flames getting to the handles, it’s a useful addition.
Using a wood or spirit burner, slows you down, gives you time to relax.
Yes a Jetboil can have the water ready in 2 minutes, but isn’t it why we ride bikes and go camping, to relax, to chill out?

I don’t relax while waiting for the kettle to boil, I relax with a hot drink in my hand. Two minutes wins every time.

Greetings from down under. Cool t shirt. I used to buy Lee Cooper jeans. Loved them. Thanks.

Methylated spirits are related to the motorcycle racing fuel Methanol. Both are extremely dangerous as they burn with an almost invisible flame. There is an additive that can be used to make the flame visible if that is useful to you. (I've a friend who is a specialist with the Methanol family of fuels and he uses the additive in every litre he uses.)

Sorry, I forgot to mention, Methylated spirits burn at a very significantly lower temperature to, for example, a gas stove flame. This is why is will take MUCH longer to boil a litre of water.

Get a windscreen, you're losing heat and wasting fuel. Don't use the simmer ring when trying to get a boil.😉
