Hey guys thanks so much for watching the video. A video with a topic as difficult to explain as this we probably wouldn’t have attempted 2 years ago as it is difficult to strike the right tone. Maybe we missed the mark here but there is also the chance that people either skipped parts or didn’t listen the the words that were actually spoken in the video. First off. We know the moon can be seen at various points of the day, the point was in the early early morn it’s easier than at mid morning. lol *A crucial point for a lot of people seems to be the fact we didn’t have lunch with the guys at their home. This was far from awkward or rude we simply went home and they went about their day* Some people are saying catching small fish is best for the environment. This isn’t my understanding and not the way fisheries are operated in Australia or the US in places I’ve fished however that isn’t to say that the regulations are behind the science so if there are any Marine Biologists out there reading this with definitive information I would love to see that. My suspicion then as it is now is that the big fish have been taken and now we’re taking the smaller ones so that soon there’s nothing. It is important to note that it is precisely why this is such an interesting and worthwhile topic is because it is multifaceted and complex. One fisherman or one family isn’t going to make a difference and we said as much. I also said something along the lines of - I hope it goes without say but these guys aren’t the problem and are simply fishing for food for their families. This seems to have been missed by a few people. We got along well with the guys, understand their situation and would love to go fishing again for pelagic fish in the area. To the very few people writing “virtue signalling” as part of their comments… 2015 called and wants its hot dis back. Again thanks for watching. Riley.
Thank you for the explanation. I'm still watching the video but this really helps understand what was happening better. I think you handled it very tactfully and I appreciate the learning experience. Love your videos as always ☺️
Pathetic...you were SULKING on their boat and they would have picked up on it. They should have made your sorry, bony corpse walk the plank. You are a narcissistic, preachy hypocrite Riley👌🏾
Hey Riley, first of all, your "hot dis" comment had me cracking up. Secondly, you are damned if you do and damned if you don't, but similar to a person I think we both respect in Sam Harris, this is important work to do and wading into "controversial" topics does have a net positive effect. I will never understand why it doesn't click for people when you (and Sam) acknowledge that an issue is complicated and there is no 100% right answer, just what is least bad. Keep up the fight and great video to the both of you. I look forward to more!
No Worries at All! You guys are doing just fine. Loved the video. I've been to both Vietnam and many parts of South America. The people there always do what they can to survive, as well as just live their daily lives. One very famous rocker, who visited there once said..."these people do more before 5 in the morning than most of us Americans do their whole day". So, yeah, we get it. You guys keep being awesome!
Phycologist here (that’s the fancy term for algae scientist)! The way my heart sang a happy song during your segment on seaweeds…I must have had a smile as big as a kelp forest! 🥰 Coincidentally enough- algae (collective term for seaweeds, microalgae, blue green algae and more) are one very promising area for reducing our burden on our oceans and fisheries. Algae is being used as a fish oil and fish meal replacement in aquafeed diets as a way to reduce our dependence on the global forage fish supply, which has dwindled over the last 30 years. Also- if you take fish oil supplements, consider a vegan option instead made from algae! Algae are after all the original source of omega 3s in the oceanic food web. Also- if you want to learn more about the potential of algae, the Algae Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to educating the public on the potential and importance of algae to our planet and society. Though I must say, you guys also did such a great job helping to spread that message too- thank you! Algae is truly the **sustainable** future of our food, among other industries too like plastics, fuel, and more! If you want to learn more, there are 3 free courses in Coursera about algae sponsored by the Algae Foundation. The 3rd course being all about Seaweeds debuts Feb 1st! Okay, I will stop rambling about algae and give you all a big virtual hug from San Diego! -
@@shpnewton I have been avoiding Carageenan for years thinking it was. But I might have been wrong. Did some quick googling just now and in theory its probably safe with carageenan, however degraded carageenan is not. The chances that foods with carageenan also has degraded carageenan seems to be pretty high and we all know how the food industry works. Also some people say carageenan can be degraded by the stomach acids so by the time it makes it to the colon it might as well have been degraded when you ate it. But this all some quick bro-science. I dont know! Hopefully Jesse will give a more educated answer to your question
The honesty and integrity of your stories is what makes you inspiring and influential. You take us to places we may never see, and give us the real experience. And make us aware of issues we may not even have known about. Thank you for sharing so openly. I hope Darwin is better now. May you all be healthy and continue to share your amazing life with us.
It’s a shock when you see how people in a developing countries have to live to survive. It’s confronting, raw and makes us reflect on our own values and customs. Thanks for sharing what was very difficult for both of you ❤
@@XxmillerniaxX How did you come to the conclusion that overfishing was done to service any society than their own? Some cultures lack the sophistication to plan and manage their resources. In Haiti there are basically no trees because the natives insist on chopping them all down to make them into charcoal. Meanwhile, across the border in the Dominican Republic there are trees everywhere.
@@The_Osprey Correct, there is no concept of "conservation" in area's farming and harvesting for survival and certainly not as most self-sufficient affluent societies project it. As for the disappointing fishing trip, a quick run to the hawkers market and street kitchens anywhere in SE Asia will soon show what the size limit of fish species usually is.
@@arfajob4246 You are kidding yourself if you think that the amount of damage being done in those areas is being done by small fishing villages. Indonesia exports over 7 million tons of fish annually. 2nd only to China.
@@XxmillerniaxX Indonesia average export tonnage over the last seven years to eoy 2021 1.1million tonnes per year. China, 3.5 ~ 4 million tonnes per year. Where you get your numbers from dude?
I wish you would of dived in more to the issues/challenges the community face when it comes to fishing and feeding their families. It’s a privilege to be able to travel and visit these beautiful countries. Therefore, we should always try to see if there’s anything we can do to support locals rather than point out all the things we believe are not good.
Exactly right! If Riley and his girlfriend don’t like it, they can hop on a plane and leave! Definitely felt the two of them came across as better than.
Y’all are good people. Just always remember, until you walk in their shoes, tread lightly. Those were small fish but maybe that is their custom or necessity. Carry-on and keep us happy. Cheers!
@@69lure because I know, I’m not a internet expert like you and the idea that colonialism introduced capitalism is nonsense, every culture on earth had markets long before the British empire.
I think I speak for all your fans in saying that we'd fully support you if you need to take a break from making the vlogs for a while - and focus on your family at this time. I hope your little one is feeling better, and good luck in nam :)
I feel sad for you guys. Something seems really off with everyone, even the kids. Maybe it's just a rough season of life or maybe something else. Sending love and peace and wishing Darwin a speedy recovery.
I agree. I can feel it too. Vibrations are way down. Honestly i felt like the area completely unsanitary. Im not surprised about parasites. Although We all all have them. Hopefully things will get better soon!!
I think it’s probably just been a huge transition for them all, a massive relocation after a few big trips and different time zones, climates etc will takes its toll especially on the little ones. That and having young kids does seem to be just constant illnesses! Mine are 2 and 4 and have been non stop unwell since the start of December with various different things. Hope they all adjust soon and things settle down.
Those parasites are no joke. They can live in your body for years. Hopefully this won’t happen & that they’ll figure it out if so. I also think it’s sad they’ve chosen to make Bali home when none of their family is there. I don’t get that. Who cares how cheap it is? And rats!! They carry so many diseases.
I was thinking the same thing, its in the small expressions that the camera catches here and there. I hope they can all get better and on the mend, lots of back to back sicknesses. Im sure the rats didnt help :(
I think it’s understandable they are fish out of water no pun intended. They left their boat Covid screwed up a lot. Who wouldn’t Be down? We all are from covid repercussions.
Mandy here typing my first comment on your series. I have been following your videos for three years. I admire what you and your family do for love of adventure and exploration of the earth. We are blessed with all that comes with your travels. You include us all in your exploratory adventures of the world. Happy life and good vibes!
Its not the guys with rods and reals, its the big trawlers that are the problem catching 50 tons of fish at a time. Also i know in our local fishing laws the small ones are kept as the bigger ones are the spawners.
Upper and lower size limits are important for many species, but I can tell you that coral trout is a rare, important reef fish that desperately needs a lower limit to decrease the catch (it’s a super targeted fish because it tastes really good, if there were no lower limits even in a well regulated country like Australia coral trout could easily be over fished by just rec/family fishers)
@@monicapuccetti3310 Interesting points, and I would agree recreational fisherman can over fish an area. However, I still believe pollution, and industrial scale fisheries are the big problem. I live in Canada, we have some serious regulations here that are always changing, and Game wardens always looking for infractions, our lakes have severe fishing pressure and people over fishing all the time, but yet the fishing is still world class. This is why I blame trawler and their stupid drag nets, that not only catch everything, but destroy the sea bed too.
Totally sympathize with your feelings about your fishing experience there. On the flip side, as you noted, those fisherman have little choice if they want to feed their families. It's a tough "Catch 22" for sure. Thanks for thinking about what you can do with your sizeable audience!
Ugh, I always wish for the best for your family. It hurts to see you guys hurting. Hope baby Darwin is doing well, that was devastating to hear. 🥺 Remember life has ups and downs forever, we’ve just gotta learn from downs so our ups feel even greater.
It's hard to see those fish being kept as they were far too small. However The fact they were fishing to feed their families and were using rods and not nets means I can sympathise with the fisherman keeping them. But I totally understand your feelings.
Its been said over and over it is better to keep small fish...the chances of them making it long enough to breed is slim, and when they do, they arwnt very good at it. Older fish means they breed more, more successfully, and have alreafy lived through the most risky part of of life. Throw the breeders back....keep the small ones. Also...fish accumulate toxins and heavy metals...small fish are healthier and a bonus...also tastier. Massive misconception i am tired of hearing from so many anglers. But when you are hungry...you keep what you can without "fishing out" a spot or area. Restaurants want large fish due toeconomics, labor (more gutting and filleting on small fish per pound), and aesthetic presentation...not because it is more sustainable or ethical. It isnt.
I appreciated your response to the situation. Your understanding of the problem, the solution, and the reality was well-communicated. Filming a video requires your awareness of and preparation for responding to unintended consequences… I very much appreciated your willingness to maintain respectfulness in a tough situation.
The sunset shots were next level! Then you said Lombok and I was like yes please. So many islands to see! Wow I hope the family gets healthy very soon…poor little man
You have nothing to apologize for. You were very respectful and shed some light on a complex and difficult subject. Thanks for your videos over all the years!
i put down my favorite book for this as soon as i got the notification. i just wanted to say thag you guys are the only channel i have watched consistently over the past five or so years (ever since middle school lmao) and it's been wild sticking with you throughout this entire adventure
Love the stories y'all tell. Your entertaining and educational animations are the best! Sorry fishing trip was a downer. I do appreciate your concern for the local fishery and the fishermen who must feed their families.
I've lived in Indonesia for 20 years, and fished all around the archipelago. They all keep small fish. Of course they want big fish, but they don't throw valuable protein of any size back in the sea. Feeding their family is the only goal. Sustainability of fish stocks or ethics simply don't enter the equation. There are thousand things about living in Indonesia which have the potential to really annoy/frustrate/upset/sadden you. And if you don't learn to ignore or accept it, then a long term stay becomes less viable. Have an attitude that It's us that needs to change or adapt, not the locals.
Crying over some small fishes just makes everyone doubt that you have any sense for the bigger picture. Of course it’s not aligning with your ways of seeing the world but come on. If this is the level of reaction for that then it will be impossible to operate in the real world. Regardless of your reason its a stame to watch when you put yourselves above others like that.
And you are fairly right that you said it in the video. But you also made a whole video about it. I’ve been a fan since years back but the lack of understanding that you guys are reaping all the benefits from a global world and (on a bigger scale) is sacrifising nothing is starting to be a bit to much tbh. I’m not suggesting you should be sorry for your success or anything like that. I’m not asking you to do anything really. Just an observation that you might need a check on your ego
I really feel you handled the communication of the difficult and complex topic of overfishing and illegal catch size with kindness, sensitivity and respect.
Thank you for letting us see the world together with you, you are truly a wonderful family. It made my cry to see your son not feeling good. I pray he will smile and have a good time with his brother soon.
Lots of things happening for you in this episode! I'm vegetarian, including fish, for the same reasons you expressed. We eat fish we catch, as you do, and also put the small ones back. We hope Darwin recovered quickly; glad you got medical care for him right away. Elayna's honesty about her melasma is refreshing. I have a couple of friends with it, both more pronounced than yours and I don't even notice it anymore. If we all would look into each other's eyes when we are communicating, everything else falls away, and all you see is the beauty. In everyone. Blessings to you all, namaste.
Elayna and Riley I'm sure by now Darwin is fully recovered 🙏🏼❤ but as a mom and now grandmother I really hope you guys are more cautious of what you guys eat especially on these small islands. We traveled a lot with our daughter and started traveling when she was just a wee one. We unfortunately had a few lessons along the way and a lot had to do with food that we didn't prepare. We almost had a life changing food issue that thank goodness only effected my husband and it was because I had chose to not eat or let my daughter eat where he wanted to at a local tiny island restaurant. My husband was sick for a long time after that and it was pre and probiotics that got him right. I'm so nervous even with smoothies because fresh fruit may not get washed properly or washed with not approved water. It's one of the lessons we've learned on our travels so please take care the best you can. You are the most devoted and loving parents, it's just unfortunate that these things 🤕🤒 happen when we least expect it. ❤❤❤❤
Cyndy -- I have had gut issues for the last few years and needed a solution. I came across a You Tube video where Dr. Eric Berg was discussing prebiotics /probiotics and he mentioned that everyone should be taking these TWO supplements for a healthy gut. Apparently, many negative symptoms can result when the gut is unhealthy. I took his advice and within three days of being on this regimen, I started to get excellent results and now my gut functions have returned to normal. I took the supplements for two weeks and now taking a pause for a few weeks and will get back on the regimen. Dr. Eric Berg has close to 10 million You Tube subscribers and he seems to have remedies for every ailment. He is thorough in his explanations and he is easy to listen to.
Addition to my post --- I should have mentioned that my supplement is Pre & Probiotics in *ONE* capsule which is nice. My son, who had health issues is taking the "same" supplement and is experiencing positive effects as well. The product is Silver Lining Pre & Probiotics, from Canada - I thought it was a USA product. Refrigerate. I don't know if this will help everyone, but it sure is helping my son and I.
Not getting Bali belly when traveling in Indonesia is abnormal. It’s bad news over there. And as you probably know, It’s not just the food & food prep. Any contact with water can be an issue. Swimming pools, using tap water for brushing teeth, ingesting water while showering/bathing, ice in drinks, etc… can be bad news.
I think an important question to ask is are those waters being overfished by Bigger fleets of boats sometimes not even from the home nation and using far more damaging techniques than the 2 chaps on a small boat using rod & line and providing for their family. A bigger vessel might catch the same amount of fish in 1 net than those chaps catch in a whole year if not even more.
My nine-year-old daughter, Kennedy, has been watching your channel with me and my husband for a few years now. She just got so excited about Mount Agung. She did a volcano research project this year at school and chose Mount Agung! She is also very excited that I am writing to tell you both.😋 I don’t comment very often, but we just had to share this little interesting tidbit. Love you guys. Love your videos. Hope Darwin feels better ❤
I’ve been Watching you guys for about 6 months now and I have fallen in love with your life and what you do, what great knowledge and memories your boys will have of the world, you two handle everything so beautifully. And Riley I so feel your pain with the fishing of small fish, it’s sad we get it but other cultures it’s just their way, and I felt your pain like I was there . Some times we need to not teach but explain how you feel gently and why. We are privileged and just need to explain . It makes me sad that you got so many negative comments. Iam usually just a follower but this one got me in the heart ❤️
I have also been to Lembongan . Beautiful island indeed and swimming with the mantra’s was the high light of the whole trip. But what I found the most heartbreaking is Lembongan rubbish dumped with the rubbish going into sea as well as the sewerage. Wishing Darwin a speedy recovery 😢
Prayers to your children, and the families who work so hard for their food. It’s humbling. Next time May you be able to share a meal with the poor. I know they would so so appreciate it. It’s hard to be humble. Blessing to all of you.
Hey guys!! I have officially caught up completely! Long time watcher of @KaraandNate I watched their first video with you guys over 6 months ago and since then I have gone back to the beginning and watched every video, some of them more than once! It's awesome to see how far you guys have come as sailors and parents over the years. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for you guys! Best of luck
I am hoping Darwin is OK and he had successful treatment for parasites. I am worried that your usual Tuesday video is not uploaded because of illness. Sending healing thoughts to you all. 😘♥️♥️♥️♥️
I, too, am concerned. I hope little Darwin is ok. Usually the videos come out on Monday. It’s now Tuesday. I pray that everything is alright with this family.
Haven't tuned in lately so I'm way behind. But I've been watching since the very first episodes! You two are so very blessed and it is a true pleasure watching you. There aren't many people in this world who live on a perpetual honeymoon, yet, that's exactly what you two do. Thanks for the many years of enjoyment. I am looking forward to the adventures on your third vessel.
If folks are subsistence fishing (or hunting), I think it’s hard to say what they are doing isn’t right. They need to get what they can as quickly as possible. I’m curious if the lack of larger fish is due to overfishing on an industrial level as that’s the really problematic aspect.
I appreciate your take on the fishing - over fished by big business and none for little guys. It seems the way of the world. And your comment - what can we do to help improve things is most important. We can all do something small that can make a big impact when all combined. Looking forward to seeing the new boat! I hope little Darwin is feeling better. ❤️
Bless your boys hearts I’m so sorry. Man the island life has been rough for all of you. At the end you could see in Darwin’s eyes how dehydrated he was. Their immune systems just haven’t gotten strong enough…I’m sure you’re all exhausted. Also the fishing trip…a heartbreaking reality of our oceans. You could feel the pain on Riley’s face. All the best, get better fast little ones, and hop back on that Tri. 💚💚💚
I appreciate that you show the dilemma you experienced and the awkward situation you were in! Your attempt to make these films as "real" as possible is something I really appreciate.
Prayers for your entire family, extra hugs and blessings for little Darwin. Amazing information and beautiful scenery makes your videos interesting. The reality of the circle and cycle of sea life confronts us all as we face the dynamics involved.
The seaweed farm was interesting. When I was a kid, it looked like it was that type of sea weed that we used to pick from the rocky shore in Hawaii, very long ago! I sympathize with Raily about the small fish! It was a difficult realization that the fish have been so depleted that all there was to catch were little ones! I think that is a sad fact world wide. Lenny and Darwin are so cute! They are getting a fantastic experience and are learning so much! Hope that Darwin gets better soon!
Thank you for continuing to show us all the many sides to your life. This was a really important topic to explore and I know many of us appreciate you taking leap of faith and putting your opinion out there in addition to the raw disappointment.
Hey I watch all your episodes, and this one really echoed an experience I had in Indonesia while traveling. The amount of garbage I saw washing up on beaches was tragic, and really left a sour taste in my mouth for what's happening over there. When I first saw you guys talking about relocating I wanted to say something, but didnt want to rain on your parade. Anyways, I hope you take this experience into consideration in any future decisions you are planning on makeing.
Feel for you guys being in a different country with a seriously sick child. Had our 4 day old boy rushed to hospital as he had sepsis from a virus that caused him to have seizures in hospital. Almost lost him but he is back to being good now. Keep positive and I'm sure you can't wait to settle back into normal sailing life again. Love your content and thanks for showing us the real struggles of your family to keep it real. Cheers
Wishing you guys all the best and hope nothing serious has happened, I certainly would not expect a response to this post if it has. Love your videos and followed you from the start, but with a growing family I do expect to see changes in your work/life balance. I would never complain about the choices you make, family always comes first.
Maybe I missed something.....I thought you were going to find a place to stay for a while, let the kids get some rest, go to school, and play with other kids? How is that going to happen if you keep leaving to go on trips? I think all this sickness is trying to tell you something.....maybe its a good time to slow down, stay in one place for a while (while the boat is being built), let them get some stability in their lives before you make the move to the new boat. It seems like the next move, to the new boat, will be much easier on them if they are feeling stable and confident in their lives first.
Love you guys....Your hearts are soft and caring for all life....Pray the treatments help your Melasma. We will also pray for Darwin......Poor fella...It is a physically draining condition to have parasites. So proud to watch your family grow as you become better parents, friends and responsible fellow travelers.
Prayers for the little ones that they are all better now!!.. Reading thru the comments, no one mentioned the "rat gnawing on the neck" incident!! ...That would have sent me packing back to freezing Canada in a heartbeat!!
Ive been watching you guys for years and this vid is one of your best. It's a true representation of the situation, no bs, and proves your commitment to show the ups and downs of your lifestyle. No one likes a failed fishing trip, including the host. I got the sense they were trying to play up or create excitement around the catches to give you the experience you paid for? I have always wanted to fish in Bali but worried I may get the same result. Stay safe.
I think its Naïve of you to think that they would not keep what they caught. Like you said they were not filling up a 55 gallon container of those little fish.. Plus do you think you can catch a wahoo or dog tooth tuna on those rods? Those fishin get huge over 100 pounds. Oh well, very interesting and when you get your new boat you can spear proper sized fish.
Reilly and Lorena ive been following you from day one and you inspired me to do similar in life. I hope you dont fall into the category of people trying to save the planet but do nothing! Both you and the boys are doing great as a sailing family. Please dont stray from that. Love you all loads!🤘🤘
Do remember that you guys have flown all over the world many times island hopping. One flight has a huge impact on the environment- imagine if they turned down hanging out with you guys knowing you were flying and island hoping for fun and looked down on you. Don’t be arseholes
Just wanted to say, you are both awesome parents. As for children being sick, that could happen anywhere at anytime. My son, who is now 32 years old, had croup very often as a child (extremely scary) and it always presented before an asthma attack and usually during the winter. He was on nebulizer treatments three times a day (during these attacks) until he started kindergarten. The attacks eventually went away as he started school. My daughter who is 29 years old had head aches and tummy issues as a child. There is no handbook for being a parent. Everyone does the best they can. Your children will turn out just fine. Prayers for both of you and the children that you stay healthy and happy. Thanks for the video and the update on the trimaran. Hang in there.
There is an environmental split screen that I find troubling. On one side there is a man line-catching admittedly small fish that he then takes to eat with his family. On the other a family of incredible wealth (by the fisherman's standard) talking about their new 60 foot sailboat partially made of carbon (replacing a perfectly functional boat) and taking flights across the globe. Now I'm sure there are lots of mitigation you are putting in to offset these vast carbon intensive and environmentally damaging activities, but this fisherman doesn't have that choice really - at least he wasn't dynamiting the reef, or using a 300ft trawler to hoover the ocean up. I have to be honest, I thought this episode came across poorly and I've been a fan for a long time. Protecting our ecosystem is a really big hairy problem with multiple intersecting economic and cultural dimensions to it that often don't fit with popular narratives. Many of us have avoided this complexity and instead focused on single issues close to our heart. Your piece to camera did touch on the complexities a little (not sure why the text was flashed up and removed almost instantaneously) but the tone was off base to me. Oh and before I get branded a hater, I'd love an 'honest Riley' piece to camera on all this - the channel is its best when its humble and introspective IMHO...
Very courteous comment. I did try to say what you have described here or maybe did actually say it but perhaps the tone was off a little. You’ll see I have commented above that it’s a complicated issue we wouldn’t have tackled 2 years ago because we weren’t the story tellers we are now but apparently we have more work to do. Again thanks for the well written comment Peter, you’re a gentleman and a scholar.
@@SailingLaVagabonde No worries. Keep up the good work (p.s. because of you guys our little family are in the advanced stages of selling our home, buying a cat, and going cruising starting late 2022 ;)
Love and appreciate how you share your lives with us. Your passion for understanding the world, sharing your journey and your clear love of filmmaking make a beautiful concoction 🥰 Biggest thanks from England xxx
I so appreciate your devotion to our planet and the health of our ocean that provides us with life! You appeared to handle the situation really well while appreciating the culture. Love you guys! ❤
Hi Riley, having cruised Indonesia many times, I feel your pain at seeing the small fish taken!! But this was nothing compared to how I felt every time I came across "bomb" fishing. It broke my heart and on top of the destruction of the fish stocks, it destroyed the reefs. Enjoy your cruise there when the tri is finished, it is the most wonderful cruising ground and the people are the best!!
Hey fam, big ups to you two for posting this one. You guys are part of the reason we started our channel, and we couldn't agree more with your words. I recently put up a video of the same sadness here in the Philippines. Tough stuff and even tougher to help! The south pacific and Indian oceans are nearly fished out. So tough to watch as a Waterman and conservative nature soul.
I'm actually a charter skipper in the south of Ireland. We have a good fishery here and on the west coast, but the east coast is pretty barren. Unfortunately the Irish coast is now very heavily fished mostly by European factory ships and longliners with the Irish fleet only having circa 8% of Irish quota which puts them under pressure and in turn doing things like pair trawling sprat in bays without restriction. I console myself with the fact that any fish we keep on a charter are at least appreciated and not wasted, and that in the grand scheme of things its a drop in the ocean and I try and offset a little of my contribution to the damage by eating plant based myself. Thankfully the majority of fish we catch in this area are still very decent size and it seems haven't declined much in the last 30 years with the exception of mackerel and blueshark which really do seem to be in decline. I think your fair to point out that those guys are not the issue there, they are just surviving on what theyve got. Ps Jealous, I want to be in Bali
We feel for Darwin, traveling under the spotlight must be so very wearing on the whole family. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire clip and of course, your editing is second to none. Neighbors grow kelp, harvest and dry, selling commercially in Maine, USA. Using this kelp they brew beer and are in competition this weekend in Victoria, BC. Thanks again and give Darwin our prayers with hugs for improved health. Love the AG product as well, thanks!
I love you guys. Lets start there. Refusing food from a local is disrespectful. The reason doesn't matter. He took so many fish because he thought he needed them to feed you guys. You should have eaten lunch with them. Realizing you acknowledged they have to eat and they aren't the ones who over fished the waters, I trust you didn't "explain" to them. I assume you made up a good excuse. However, you need to accept they are poor and you guys are living there because the cost of living is low. Its low, because the ppl are poor. Think of that circle, next time, its way bigger than a few fish. Hopefully Lenny gets better and you can hop on your plane and continue to live your life while those poor ppl keep small fish because they have no other way to feed their families. Now, I love you guys and think you are trying to do the right thing but high horses sometimes set you up for a longer fall. Hopefully, that was gentle enough. See you next week!!
Great vid. Good story. Totally get it and appreciate how respectful you all are towards people and cultures without the spoils of other countries and fishing grounds.
While you consider the size, they have to consider their children's stomach's. They don't have TH-cam patrons, or a boat being built in Vietnam. Yes you recognised the culture but it's economics.
Thank you guys for showing the raw reality of the beautiful places you visit. It’s so important to showcase this. I’m so glad that Lenny is better and I hope Darwin is better! Sending aloha from Hawai’i ❤️🌊🌴☀️
It’s hard to shame anyone for doing what they must to feed their family - a balancing act for sure, but I think you both did a great job of highlighting that in this video. Overfishing can be an abstract concept for some unless you’re faced with watching what someone else has to do in order to survive because of it. Hard to wrestle with for sure. Thanks for shedding some light - and of course, wishing you all good health!!
Hi guys, great episode and a difficult topic. We are both marine scientists from NZ, I run a marine conservation and aquaculture department at a uni here. Been following you since the start and we've been lucky enough to sail around the world too. Always happy to help with any marine biology and/or aquaculture related questions if you have them 😊. Well done on addressing these issues and great to see you talk about seaweed!!! Exciting times for the industry 🌿🌿
Those boys are going to break some serious hearts. Adorable in every way. I sure hope Mr. Darwin feels better soon. Kisses and hugs to them both! Take care mom and dad!
Oh you poor things with the sickness. Sending uplifting vibes. I’m so glad you both bring so much awareness to overfishing. I guess some cultures just don’t have the awareness they should. Hope that little pup is feeling better.
I just gotta say something about the kids, as a grandmother to 3 siblings ages 7 (twins) and 10. After reading so many comments about the impacts of dragging the kids all over the world, having a nanny, and frequent illness or behavior issues, I feel compelled to offer my perspective. I think your kids will be just fine! It seems like one of my grandkids is sick at any given time, or one is acting out for a few weeks, or refusing whatever food or activity they loved a week ago! That's just kids! You have a lot of very well meaning subscribers who want to shame you for the way your kids are being raised. Even when you do your very best to keep them healthy, stuff will happen, even if you live in a sticks and bricks in middle America.
exactly also those kids who had to stay a lot at home during lockdown also suffered from this. The most important thing is just that the parents are understanding, show empathy and meet the Childs emotions with understanding. Riley and Elaina are doing that so i don't see a problem there :-). Yes you have to be considered and they are doing it!
So are your grandchildren on TH-cam?? Are they being filmed while they are sick and posted to millions of viewers? The point of concern is the fact that WE are viewers into someone's private life not that children get sick while travelling...
I could not agree more. I worked and had very demanding jobs requiring me to have my kids in preschool as well as before and after care....We did not do much socializing as my entire weekends were dedicated to my family as well as hours after work. My kids were always getting sick from other kids in preschool but by the time they hit age for regular school their immune system was made of steal. They are now both well rounded adults. Don't worry...yours will be better than fine. The education they are receiving by learning other cultures is priceless and cannot be taught in any public school in the states where most don't even have a passport. Enjoy your kids!! They know you love them and trust me that is the important part.
Sending you all positive thoughts and healing vibes while dealing with these sicknesses, sincerely hope little Darwin is feeling much better by now and already anxious to see next week's video for update on him. Loved this video, so interesting. I would have thrown those tiny fish back as well, I have had tropical fish in my aquarium bigger than those. The sunset scenes behind that volcano were just amazing & surreal. Much love to your previous family.
Poor little guy. Yes I guess in those countries you have to be very careful with the food. Hope he feels better soon. Glad Lenny is feeling better. Take care guys. Watch you all the time from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Just a small editing note (your material is always great) if you put pieces of text that require pausing the video to read, TH-cam darkens the image when paused and … we miss the message.
Hey guys. We absolutely LOVE your channel. You guys have actually inspired us to start vlogging too (still a lot to learn) I adore your passion for the environment and our oceans Riley, and Elayna you are just an incredible soul who knows exactly how to keep it real and authentic. Much love. Hope Darwin is on the mend too.
I have been watching you from the first. I would much rather see people catching and keeping the small fish, than see people free diving "cherry picking" the very large egg laying producing fish!
My wife and I had a similar experience in Jamaica. The locals place fish traps everywhere around the island and harvest tiny fish to feed their families. I firmly believe that a little education and short term government subsidies would boost the ecosystem and the economy.
First off. We know the moon can be seen at various points of the day, the point was in the early early morn it’s easier than at mid morning. lol
*A crucial point for a lot of people seems to be the fact we didn’t have lunch with the guys at their home. This was far from awkward or rude we simply went home and they went about their day*
Some people are saying catching small fish is best for the environment.
Everybody does what they have to to feed their family.😊
Thanks for always showing us the raw and real parts of the world your in.
Sending prayers for sweet Darwin that he is now on the mend.
Phycologist here (that’s the fancy term for algae scientist)! The way my heart sang a happy song during your segment on seaweeds…I must have had a smile as big as a kelp forest! 🥰
Coincidentally enough- algae (collective term for seaweeds, microalgae, blue green algae and more) are one very promising area for reducing our burden on our oceans and fisheries.
Is carageenan bad for us?
Love this information! Thank you for sharing your knowledge Jesse. G'day from Australia 🥰🇦🇺
Well ld rather eat seaweed than bugs
The honesty and integrity of your stories is what makes you inspiring and influential. You take us to places we may never see, and give us the real experience. And make us aware of issues we may not even have known about. Thank you for sharing so openly. I hope Darwin is better now. May you all be healthy and continue to share your amazing life with us.
Awe poor little Darwin my heart broke a little when I saw him sleeping there at the end. Praying he’s recovering quickly ❤
It’s a shock when you see how people in a developing countries have to live to survive. It’s confronting, raw and makes us reflect on our own values and customs. Thanks for sharing what was very difficult for both of you ❤
Especially when you consider that their difficulties are caused by overfishing to service societies a lot more wasteful than theirs.
Cheers!
Balinese are rolling in tourism dollars this guy does not need to take those undersized fish to survive.

Beautiful sunsets!! Prayers for Darwin! So thankful Lenny is better.
Get well darwin
I think I speak for all your fans in saying that we'd fully support you if you need to take a break from making the vlogs for a while - and focus on your family at this time. I hope your little one is feeling better, and good luck in nam :)
Glad Lenny is feeling better. Hope Darwin is on the mend. 💞
I agree with keeping the smaller ones not the breeding ones but not the tadpoles🤦♂️🤦♂️😂
Exactly 💯
PLENTY more fish in the sea lol. They’ll go to good use :)
I imagine they would cringe every time you guys would throw one back
Its been said over and over it is better to keep small fish...the chances of them making it long enough to breed is slim, and when they do, they arwnt very good at it. It isnt.
@@AaronHendu you are spot on.
@@AaronHendu very well said dude
Sending good vibes for Darwin. He's my favorite crew member. Always a champ.
I appreciated your response to the situation. Your understanding of the problem, the solution, and the reality was well-communicated. Filming a video requires your awareness of and preparation for responding to unintended consequences… I very much appreciated your willingness to maintain respectfulness in a tough situation.
As well as address the issue after the fact.
Poor Darwin!!! What a way to end a video 🫤😱😰 Hoping for a full and speedy recovery.
I put my paint brush down. Great minds!
Praying for you guys as you care for your children. Praying Lenny and Darwin get better very soon.
Love the stories y'all tell. Your entertaining and educational animations are the best!
Sorry fishing trip was a downer. I do appreciate your concern for the local fishery and the fishermen who must feed their families.
Who does those animations they're great!
I’m fairly sure I said most of what you’ve said there.
Yes but you did it in the way of a child
@@MsDani899 I LOVE Dr Eric Berg!! He is so knowledgeable. I've put into practice many things of his and my gosh do I see differences. Love him 🙂
I was surprised I had to look so hard for a comment about this issue. I completely agree. It isn't said with condensation but with experience.
Thanks!
My nine-year-old daughter, Kennedy, has been watching your channel with me and my husband for a few years now. She just got so excited about Mount Agung. She did a volcano research project this year at school and chose Mount Agung! She is also very excited that I am writing to tell you both.😋
I don’t comment very often, but we just had to share this little interesting tidbit. Love you guys. Love your videos. Hope Darwin feels better ❤
Aww this is so sweet, tell her we said hello and that Mount Agung is even more beautiful in real life! 😊

I am looking forward to the adventures on your third vessel.
If they’re keeping the small fish, they’re hungry. No judgment
Big prayers for little man and hopes of a quick recovery! Love from AR, USA!!! Hope you all feel better asap! Sending love always!
Long time fan from the get-go. I was just watching the movie True Spirit. I see Lenny is now a movie star!!!! So cool.
Praying for healing for your precious sons. It's never easy to watch your child feel bad and hurt.
This channel is based on sincere honesty and integrity and I admire both aspects from you at all times and thank you for another wonderful episode!
Oh no. Hope the little guy feels better soon. Lots of love xx
Her name is Elayna 😂 but nice try
You know what i mean. Love them either way.
Do remember that you guys have flown all over the world many times island hopping. One flight has a huge impact on the environment- imagine if they turned down hanging out with you guys knowing you were flying and island hoping for fun and looked down on you. Don’t be arseholes
As a mom of three little ones I totally understand how it is with little ones especially when their sick, hopefully he’s feeling better ❤
Oh, my! I hope Darwin feels better soon. You guys are awesome!
Thank you both for showing how it is possible to be courteous on social media but still give honest and critical feedback.
I was hoping this would be the top comment. Well said Peter.
This is how grown folks are suppose to interact.
Sending good vibes to you guys and the boys!!! Hopefully everyone is feeling better soon!!!!!
I love you guys not only for your love for the ocean but also your compassion for it. It's beautiful.
Truly hope Darwin is ok, no video on monday night has me worrying.. best ok luck!!!
Your lives are literally a movie. Twists and turns ups and downs every where 😢 thank you for sharing . It’s relatable in a universal way ❤
Praying for the little guy to get better....feel so bad for him❤️
We feel for Darwin, traveling under the spotlight must be so very wearing on the whole family.
Sending healing vibes to Darwin!! ❤
your empathy is encouraging that a kind humanity is still out there.
Right?! Makes NO sense to me.
Boats dumping raw sewage in the water contribute to incidents of intestinal parasites among swimmers.
Great vid.
One is fishing for food and survival the other is fishing for fun. Very different lifestyles and no need to shame the one just trying to survive.
My respect for you two continues to grow throughout each video. Much love! Fantastic episode!
I concur.
They know you love them and trust me that is the important part.
we only see a tiny part which they decided to share. Its all in their control what to share what not...
Is it reasonable to compare the damage of this type of fishing to the damage done by excessive air miles flying?
Poor little guy. Yes I guess in those countries you have to be very careful with the food. Hope he feels better soon. Glad Lenny is feeling better. Take care guys. Watch you all the time from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Just a small editing note (your material is always great) if you put pieces of text that require pausing the video to read, TH-cam darkens the image when paused and … we miss the message.
Thanks for the tip! 😊 Sorry about that.
On mobile you just tap on the screen and the darkness goes away whilst staying on pause!
Oh, goodness! I hope for a quick recovery!
Keeping baby Darwin in my prayers. Sending all the love light and good vibes 💜
I have been watching you from the first. I would much rather see people catching and keeping the small fish, than see people free diving "cherry picking" the very large egg laying producing fish!
Riley free dives and routinely cherry picks the large breeding stock. You made a point without mentioning a name.
My wife and I had a similar experience in Jamaica. The locals place fish traps everywhere around the island and harvest tiny fish to feed their families. I firmly believe that a little education and short term government subsidies would boost the ecosystem and the economy.
