I've seen a few reviews of Glass and everyone has been saying the rising star in the lime light is McAvoy, they say he stole the whole show and delivers incredible acting again.
Do you know what movie NEEDS the Cinemawins treatment? LotGTOoG Didn't understand the acronym? Yeah, it's a mouthful, the movie is called... Legend of the Guardians, The Owls of Ga'Hoole This movie is PERFECT for the Cinemawins treatment! Cinemasins has always been more about sarcastic entertainment, whereas CinemaWins has always been closer to actual film criticism from a consumer perspective.
mcgoo721 Mind Telling me and the rest of the commenters on how it’s a shit film please? And please, due to his acting, I’m sure it’s very easy for him to get recognition to the great characters he plays as, now sit your hypocritical ass down lol
I work as a lighting technician in Toronto, and I got to work a few days on set of IT: Chapter II. I'm legally not allowed to say anything about anything... But I will say that MacAvoy seemed to be totally killing it. On top of being a nice dude who let me walk through the door first because I was carrying something.
@@VeneratorVar Thanks man! A couple weeks later I actually saw him at the movies with his girlfriend, Jessica Chastain and the original Old Spice guy (who's also in the new IT movie). I wanted to say hi/get a photo (can't do that at work) but I think he had just finished taking a selfie with some people outside and he was heading out. Fun fact: considering they exited around the same time I did, I think they went to see Fallout in IMAX on opening night!
I really like this comment, because MacAvoy is an awesome guy, and your comment really supports the whole speech CinemaWins gave on how huge crews come together to make big movies. From the actors to the lighting technicians everyone just works to make something awesome. Glad you got to meet the guy too.
James McAvoy was good for a while. I didn't like him earlier, I did not like his role in Wanted and his role in The Chronicles of Narnia, but when he played Charles Xavier in X-Men, while the movies as a whole weren't that good, his portrayal was really good for Charles and those movies made me like him as an actor. Before X-Men he really wasn't on my radar but he has been since. He is a good plus for any movie now.
I personally came across him when I girl I was with back in 2007 was obsessed over the Dune series. I listened to entertain her at first, because I cared and we were close. Then she really got me into it. Ordered the books and started to read it together and surprised her with the series and we watched it together. Even back then, as Leto, something about him jumped out to me, especially during the training scene and it slowed to show how he was having fun and catching on, something about that expression...
He's been a win for me since The Last King of Scotland. Everyone was praising Whitaker (and rightfully so, of course!) for that performance, but, at the time, I thought it was really a testament to McAvoy's talent that he more than held his own in that film. And, I used to find him wildly unattractive, too, so that wasn't an argument in his favor. As "girly" as Atonement may seem, his performance (all the performances, really) is still one of the best i've ever seen. And, of course, his Charles Xavier made me fall in love with Charles Xavier (which I would have never thought possible)... But that shouldn't be an argument. So, yeah. If McAvoy isn't a win, I don't know who is. He deserved an Oscar for The Last King of Scotland, Atonement and Spilt. I can't wait to see Glass. Even if the critics are terrible, I'll still go see it only for his performance. So, that's a win.
Absoulutely! how does a performance like this get ignored!? It's not just that he's playing multiple characters, It's that you see him change characters through his physicality alone! this was an amazing performance.
@@montyrobertson7362 isn't January generally a throwaway month for movies? I heard somewhere that if you don't expect a movie to do well anyways, they'll get released in January because most award shows are either already going on or will be soon so January released don't qualify
Small correction: when Patricia messes up the sandwich she says "sorry, Dennis" that wasn't her being as meticulous as him, it was him communicating from the inside possibly even being co-conscious which was a nice addition to the DID accuracy that there isn't a black and white split of awareness between alters there's varying levels of co-consciousness and how much information passes through to other alters
@@AnakinSkywalker-mi5cz considering I've seen nothing but praise for the portrayal of DiD, from people who have DiD, in this movie, I'd like to know why you think it wasn't very good. Would be nice to have both sides of the argument.
@@SertQuos @SertQuos DID is sensationalized in the media quite often, and this movie only adds to the stigma. This is not meant to be an accurate portrayal of DID, but people without the disorder think it is. I do think they got some things right, like the co-con portrayal and the differing voices, genders, and ages of alters, but it still doesn't do enough to not damage the community. Movies like split are the reason people with DID are asked if they are going to kill someone when they switch. Movies like split are why people with DID are often fired after being diagnosed. Heck, some people even think DID is just schizophrenia. I recommend you watch a video by a DID youtuber named dissociaDID about split, i will link it below
@@AnakinSkywalker-mi5cz its not the movies fault if people are too stupid to realize its a fake movie based on a real thing, do not blame a piece of art for what people do with it, blame the extremist, not the book, know what I mean
@@AnakinSkywalker-mi5cz ive heard it's fairly decent, until you get to the beast. also the idea that the system is the abuser is more unrealistic, as they're more likely to be a victim.
Not like SINS. A disgusting guy who just looks at every way in which to ignorantly criticize a movie. They are two sides of the same coin: film critiques, but one is a bastard, disgusting and ignorant (like all internet haters) and the other appreciates a lot of stuff and delivers a critical analisis....
for the record, i actually like sins. sure it can be a bit too troll-y but it's troll humor, don't watch it if you don't like it lol. wins has a bit of the same (winning hugs, winning sweet cute things that have no real plot value, etc) at the surface they're both humor channels. i just happen to like win's extra critique is all.
@@agustinbaletti Let me guess.. You haven't watched "Everything wrong with CinemaSins". If you haven't, then who is the ignorant? The channel is just for comedy purpose. And it has 8.2m subscribers. So, take it f*cking easy..
@Abell379 I actually loved Glass, I'll admit that the chekov's gun that Elijah promised didn't end up happening but I still ended up loving the movie as a whole, and I've watched it 3 times already
@@MrThorne02 Probably everything would have been focused in David Dunn... So I'm actually glad for the change, because that let us met Kevin Wendell Crumb, a character so well written, full of details!
I really appreciate how you looked at the themes of this one, explaining why certain aspects are harmful but also has some positive aspects to how they were handled. It's a far more delicate and respectful reading of the film than most might give, although I really understood both sides and I have my own issues with it. So yeah, you're still the best.
*"The broken are the more evolved.."* Definitely cathartic and _not_ exploitative in my case...this scene actually uplifted me after I saw it for the first time...I remember sobbing and re-watching several times. I felt (and sometimes still do) almost inhuman after a truly traumatic event changed my life. But sometimes you hear something, or see something and you feel "put together" again. Whether or not it's fantasy, or meaningless words to the rest, I thought this interpretation of "being touched" tethered me to the reality that I wasn't alone. Even if only for a fleeting moment.
Thank you, Cinemawins, for trying to explain, that filmmaking is freaking hard. Even people who have made films for decades. I'd say all good films are their own miracles, because rarely do you have hundreds and hundreds of people working together on one product. One endgame. I just hope that more and more people will realise how much work and how many people are needed to all do their best to create a good film. Sometimes it doesn't work, but man we should celebrate when it does
You did not just say 'endgame' within a paragraph about hundreds of crew working on a huge movie that was well made and built up to please masses, on a video about a superhero movie... I'm sorry.
I watched a very interesting and well-made documentary about the magic of film-making with interviews/discussions from many top stars, directors, and studio execs. It really shined a light on just how difficult the field is, so much so that a successful film is often attributed to magic because it's so miraculous. The doc is called "Boffo: Tinseltown's Bombs and Blockbusters" I highly recommend it.
13:53 I've dealt with it, and I had the same reaction. I cried in the movie theatre. But yeah, I kind of cried because it was a wierd bitter moment with some sweetness sprinkled on top. I don't know what it was, maybe the music was building up to it and I felt it more when he said "you are different" or "you are not like the others" and immediately panned to her scars. My wife was stroking my arms (which is where i had scars). Idk..... it all just crescendos into that moment and it makes you feel special and a little empowered for having gone through things and come out a better person. Thank you for not speaking the ones of us that have gone through self-harm, you have no idea how much I appreciate that.
19:29 I noticed, in the clips shown of Hedwig saying "etcetera", his tone of voice alone shows how he's feeling; at first, he sounds like exactly what's happening, happier rambling to people he most likely sees as new friends. In the second one, he sounds a bit more nervous, which fits considering he's cuddling up to an attractive girl. The third clip shows him sounding more confused by what's going on, and lastly, he's genuinely hurt at the idea that Casey wanted to escape, he's even close to crying when he says it. It's a detail I didn't notice when I actually watched the movie, but seeing the clips back-to-back like this really shows how amazing James McAvoy is at portraying the emotions of situations like that.
James McAvoy was amazing in this. Imagine having to play, somewhat realistically, several widely different characters that are all very complex. On top of that, playing a character pretending to be someone else all the while keeping it entertaining AND arguably as accurate as you possibly could be. Wow.
I'm a grown ass man and I was smoking a cig outside, at night, and it deffly got me. Like I had a spike in adrenalin and everything. Impressive sir! Well done!
I like how you elaborate on the mental illness aspects of the story, because I think public opinion missed the point. The common comments were criticising the movie depicting mental illness as both dangerous and violent. But I felt they missed the point that while mental illness can be confusing and unpredictable, it also enhances survival when others would simply fail. The Beast protects Crumb from the shotgun wounds. Casey's withdrawn personality and self-harm would be consequences of the depression she lives with as a result of her abuse. But those traits are what keep her calm and collected and looking for solutions, while the other girls panic. It's also the same reason that the beast lets her go after seeing her scars. Her illness saved her. I do want to respond to your comment about "The broken are the more evolved". This is actually biologically true. Stressing a system forces it to adapt and super-compensate. It's how muscles get bigger, nervous systems get stronger, lungs increase in air capacity and how bones strengthen in fighters, etc. It works similarly with psychological stress too. Casey - while unfortunately burdened by incomprehensible suffering of her childhood - was the strongest of the girls, and by far the most capable. She was... the most evolved. Extra win: I read a comment from a woman who immediately identified that Casey was abused when she said 'pee on yourself'. The woman herself was exposed to the same sort of child sexual abuse and she learned that's how to make it stop. The moment she saw Casey immediately suggest it, she knew Casey experienced the same thing. Props to Shyamalan for that! (personally, I thought she had picked up on Dennis' meticulous cleaning of the car dashboard, so pee would immediately disgust him).
Christopher Titus' first comedy special "Norman Rockwell is bleeding" was entirely themed around the idea of broken people. its a very funny, but also very REAL show. it opens with "So it seems that because of every syndrome and disorder we've invented in the past twenty years, the Los Angeles Times reported that 63% of American families are now considered dysfunctional. My God! That means we're the majority." he goes darker then any comic i've seen, but also offers that it can make you stronger.
Yeah, ik its way after this video release but fuck it The presentation of those things was great and they portrayed DID amazingly well, except for the clothes, nobody got time for that but for audience and stylistic sake, its good. I myself have DID and know many others with it and other things. I love these films, my alters do to, so its personal opinion on how you take it, but the media saying that such things shouldnt be represented is just insane and borderline censorship. Mental Illness isnt simple, its not something that you can predict or categorize perfectly, it can be dangerous but its not Alters that are dangerous. Its the individuals, Alters like the beast do exist, obviously not to the movie extent. But its the brain adapting to a life that wouldnt otherwise be easy. It is truly an amazing thing, the tragedy comes from systems of alters that struggle to co habitate and people who dont understand what is happening to them. Thats why we NEED films like this - the public must be educated, do we have to be careful to not insult people? Absolutely. But it should never be a taboo subject especially when we have places like India where mental illness in general is seen as weakness and imperfection. I seriously love this film, they did so much right for DID, Mental illness, film making, scripting just all of its amazing. I hope I see the day that people knowledgeable of these things are the majority.
The broken are not more evolved unfortunately. Trauma makes you more likely to have physical and mental health issues that are damaging to those suffering and those around them. Trauma and abuse tend to be inherited and detrimental. Broken bones are more likely to break again and scar tissue causes all sorts of issues. One virus makes you more likely to get a second one. Depression makes you more likely to be unemployed and have a heart attack. PTSD is dangerous to you and those you love. The difference here is eustress vs stress. One is good, the other is not. We are not all uniformly able to approach society and the world as a whole. The problem with our world is it’s focus on success and usefulness. Our value based system causes so many problems. Just because a person with mental or physical illness is less capable, that does not mean they are less valuable. We should not be romanticizing illness in order to justify value, we need to be changing what value looks means to us in the first place.
I have DID. I have been asked witch of my alters will kill them. This isn't good. There are no evil alters. Dosent help that I live near phily and king of Prussia Mall

@@theon3pieceisreal dude just cause something is unexpected it doesn’t make it good. Game of thrones season 8 subverted my expectations. Because the main threat was defeated by a child in one night and one of the most kind hearted characters burned a city down because her friend was killed.
About that part where you talked about all the people working on Shyamalan films, I‘ve got to say something (or quote it, I guess): “The movie making process from start to finish is so chaotic that it’s a miracle that any movies are any good” -NandovMovies
The scene where Casey's scars are shown (from someone who has to stare at their own self harm scars daily) had a couple things happening for me A.) Pride that self harm and abuse were portrayed very accurately, as someone who has self harmed and continues to deal with it I wear heavy jackets that would be hard to accidentally reveal something like how Casey wore many shirts to hide her own B.) The part where "The Beast" was talking about how the abused are pure cause they know true pain was tacky but also made it seem like they wanted to appeal to this kind of audience C.) I tensed up cause it was out of the blue for me as someone who deals with self harm seeing somebody else's scars triggered both a sense of empathy and a need to help and had me subconsciously feeling my own wrists and upper arms to feel my own scars, something that some people who deal with this kind of thing do cause it reminds them of the pain they inflicted on themselves Over all the scene was fantastic and we'll shot, the struggle of self harm and sexual abuse was portrayed very well to a point where id almost say someone on the staff knew what was happening or at least did their research If you'd like to ask questions message me on Instagram @metalconcertphotos I always enjoy answering questions and helping people understand better what it's like
I'm glad someone's actually talking about this scene in the comments. While for some people it may be a sense of pride but for others it gives them extreme anxiety and can make them want to hurt themselves more I personally think he should've blurred it or perhaps not shown it multiple times in a row in respect to the people who have negative responses to that sort of thing
As someone with PTSD (from a different context though) I did find the whole trauma makes you stronger thing a little cringe. And while I don't have DID I didn't love that it was another "evil identity" film. But I don't think the director was actually going for a "trauma is good for you, people with DID are evil" narrative...I think they actually show enough understanding of mental illness to know that's not a good narrative. Instead I think its just that those narratives are so common that its hard to subtle subvert them without people misunderstanding it, and that's really where the cringe comes from... also "I'm the Captain Now" I didn't see anything in EpicSpartan's comment to suggest they're a sexual assault survivor (they actually mention self harm) but it is extremely rude to ask someone who raped them (even if you know they were raped...). First of all, even for people who do not develop PTSD, that is still a very personal question. But for someone with PTSD you're asking them to trigger their symptoms, which in some cases can severely mess up their lives. And you can't really say "well if they didn't want to be asked they shouldn't have posted" cause dude, they just made a comment, mentioning having an experience to explain how they felt about a movie is not an invite to give you details on trauma. I'm sure you didn't mean to be rude but honey for future reference its rude (and also comes off a little pervy and gross...) to ask.
@@annegrey3780 it is sort of romanticising abuse with that narrative and came across as this "you're stronger, purer and better than people who haven't been the victim of abuse" but I also think these were only portrayed as insane ramblings of the beast/other DID personalities and deserve not to be taken seriously.
@@annegrey3780 I think people miss a part of the narrative and two key components that help it step away from the usual trite "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" trope: 1) Those who were "broken" and were not "more evolved" are dead 2) The Beast isn't a scientist or philosopher but an alter developed as an Othering of the Shadow and a broken coping mechanism that takes the darkness and puts it to use. We reach flawed conclusions, especially when we're injured as children. We come up with ways of escaping or stories that let us survive and get a handle on life. The small person in a house with big people that become dangerous when angry can become very good at picking up minutiae and reading emotions, and those who survive and are lucky may sometimes seem "empathic" but there's just far more who get the cues and read them wrong or get shut down. KC and Casey are extreme characters in a comic book movie, not exemplars of real conditions and experiences, but are made to feel more real and human because of those touches that are genuine. I think I made sense?
I remember hearing the line at 12:56 in the cinema when I saw this movie and I teared up. You can literally hear the pain in his voice, James McEvoy is amazing!
LeemPetes I know right? As I browse movie trailers, there are just comments about the big reveal, endings, important deaths to the point where I just stopped looking.
I never got the whole uncle situation she never seemed off about it when she was a kid. Why didn’t her dad do anything. Was the animal role play in the woods a part of it. It just never really clicked when I watched it
@CinemaWins I just wanted to say thank you. Most of my friends and peers seem to delight in picking movies apart and taking the joy of the story out by nitpicking details and minor plot things or this or that or the other. I was always one who went first and foremost to just enjoy the movie, but no one ever wants to talk about what was good or great, just the problems. Thank you for reminding me that its okay to just enjoy movies and that ripping them to pieces isn't the only way people can watch movies. (I actually ended up minoring in Film Studies so I appreciated the "in the weeds" part greatly).
I found myself split on something. I absolutely love your content, but can not truly accept you as the genius of analysis you are without an analysis of Treasure Planet. Please rectify this before I lose my mind.
I am proud to say I second this. I absolutely love Treasure Planet as well and would appreciate it if he did do that. Thank you person who clearly has good taste in Disney movies.
Your speech about the stars aligning perfectly exemplifies why I love this channel. Every film deserves to be celebrated, even if they don't hit the mark where they want to. The act of making a movie is arduous and long, and it takes a lot of people doing things just right to get something that people will remember. That's why those times when they do those things right should be celebrated, even apologized for when need be. Please never change; you're one of the best voices of movie analysis on this platform.
useless I’m a big fan of the books and sea of monsters just felt so rushed and felt like there was like no effort behind it, but it’s about as good as the first one
@@andbo7937 the reason i find the Sea of Monsters movie better isn't the plot (which you're right, was very rushed) but the characters and world: Mr. D and Clarisse were actually there, there were more elements of chb that weren't in the first one (the big house, the dining pavilion) and overall its energy i guess felt more like the book than the Lightning Thief movie did (to me, at least). idk if that makes sense but that's the best way i can put it. but yeah, it still sucks, i think we can both agree they're both trash
17:18 - 19:02 Best bit about the video itself. It holds true for a lot of films that have a ton of talented cast and crew behind it, yet, for some reason or another, just doesn't work out the way one intends. Anything can happen.
I also seen plenty of comments from people involved that there was alot of studio issues as well. IE studio involvement, which always bodes ill. he wanted to make it as accurate as possible, but was prevented from doing so.
McAvoy did such a great job portraying completely different people. He was amazing at the switches towards the end. I can't believe he didn't earn an award for this movie.
If anyone's interested in learning about dissociative identity disorder from those who have it, I recommend the channels Multiplicity and Me, DissociaDid, and the Entropy System.
i love the dissociadid system!!! they are so lovely. they are able to explain DID so well and their personal experiences really helo me understand DID better. definitely recommend them!
I have been recently diagnosed with DID, and I have extreme anxiety about it because of the stigma around it. Thank you for this, I am trying to educate myself and find my confidence xx
well yeah.. you cant beat trauma. you can just learn to live with it. or as hoeg once wrote: the pain doesn't get lesser with time, you just get better at meeting it
At 11:12 you can see McAvoy's hand swelled, it's because he got so frustrated when shooting a scene where all his personalities were speaking and talking at the same time that he just punshed a metal door. And in his role in Atomic Blonde, as it was shot roughly at the same time or shortly after he had a cast on that hand so they decided to just roll with it.
I will never forget seeing this in theaters an being overcome with ecstasy at the end. I remember chattering non-stop on the way home about how we were finally getting an Unbreakable sequel. I remember watching it again and the twist STILL causing me to nerdgasm. Split may not be as good as Unbreakable in my opinion, but it'll always hold a special place in my heart.
This is probably one of my favorite movies that i'll only be able to watch once or twice. it really speaks to me, as a writer, but it repulses me, as a human being. i feel too much compassion for Kevin, with all the things he's done, i still just want to wrap him in a fluffy blanket and hold him close. i appreciate that this is a superhero/villain movie but i feel that its taking liberties with mental illness. Casey probably suffers from anxiety and depression, shes not anti social because shes an introvert, shes anti social due to her anxiety of someone getting to close and finding out about her abuse. most of her cuts looks self inflicted though there are a couple of cigarette burns, so... anyway, im not a psychologist. im just an empathetic person who feels too much and has been through shit
Ok, so, admittedly, I've been deadset against watching "Split" because of how it looked like it was "demonizing" DID, but I might check it out after watching this review. I really appreciate how carefully you've handled things, looking to get insight from someone who actually has DID, and how thoughtfully you approached the themes of this film.
@@brianbrush5107 That's not a twist, as it doesn't affect the story at all (unlike 'Bruce Willis was a ghost all along' or 'the village was in the modern world all along').
As a counselor this movie had me so intrigued the whole time and this cinemawins video was so deep and full of truths....and I love how he puts in the piece about movies portraying mental illness as evil was not ok
This was hands down one of your best conclusions and overall one of your best EGA. It's been amazing watching your channel grow and your style develop. Keep up the amazing work.
McAvoy deserved some kind of award nod for his role in this movie. I do not like horror/suspense movies all that much but this one was great. I plan on buying the trilogy when they are released in a box set. As an abuse survivor, I see no issues with the use of it in this movie. It was handled well. I look forward to Glass.
That “weeds” segment changed my whole perspective on film. Well done my friend. Also, that Wix ad segue was so obvious and and unabashed that I accidentally loved it 😂
i feel as if calling people who self harm and have suffered abuse “the broken” and “different” when all they desperately try to do is blend in is kinda worrying. it kinda hurts seeing it that way.
Thank you for making this video. People see me and don't think I have been through a lot because I am big guy now. When I was a kid and much of my adulthood I took a lot of abuse from my family and it was a struggle. Thank you so much for saying all of what you did in this.
There can never be enough wins for James McAvoy. Seriously one of my favorite actors. I had some reservations about Shyamalan after Avatar and Jupiter Ascending but this whole trilogy really made me rethink his directing.
This movie makes me super uncomfortable with the whole "mental disorder as horror movie trope" and "person with DID is an abuser" thing it has going on (people with DID are FAR LESS LIKELY to be abusers than people without DID...), and all of the negative impact it's had on the lives of real people with real DID. But the fact that CinemaWins got someone who experiences the reality of DID every day means that I can watch this without leaving a dislike. Thanks, CinemaWins, you're been more conscious of the messed up nature of the DID portrayal in this film than most people are.
The issue is, the character was based on a real man with 24 personalities, one of which was a mix of all of the others who was responsible for the kidnapping of a bunch of girls. Its very hard because not everyone with mental illnesses act the same way, the experience is different for everyone and unfortunately for some of them, the experience is violent.
Cinnamon Bun you do realize this guy got his personalities from abuse as well right? And also, realize this, you do realize that with most of his personalities, that he’s pretty much like a super-human, which would bring light out to those with D.I.D, so no need to be a hypocrite just because of a disorder, that’ll just make you sound like an average, every day SJW lol
Zach Engel See? And due to most disorders, most people tend to get violent, not because of their disorders but due to their emotions, such as in this film, where as hedwig is scared that Patricia might find out that he’s talking with the girls and then try’s to get personal with the girls and gets attacked, making Kevin turn into Dennis, where as, Dennis proceeds to knock out the girls, and also @Cinnamon Bun, Don’t You See That This Guy Has Different People In Him? Don’t Try To Make The Movie Seem Bad Just Because Of A Disorder, That’s LiKe Calling Mr. Glass Not Smart And Ironically, in this film, Kevin says he wants the weak to feel strong and empowered, in which From What I heard in most reviews, it did somewhat empower those with disorders, now sit down lol
Okay, this is what I needed in life. After watching all or most of your videos which made go and rewatch a few films I have to say, Split is an all time favourite, something akin to Inception. So I was genuinely happy to see you did a EGA
“The Broken are more evolved.” The Beast didn’t notice she was “broken” until he saw her scars. Self harm is not synonymous with abuse and trauma. She’d be as good as dead without the scars, but still faced the same trauma. I don’t know. It may be pretty nit picky but it’s just something I thought about watching the movie for the first time a little under a month ago.
Oh damn yeah. Like I didn't think about it, but thats kind of icky. Since it essentially gives vibes like your trauma isn't valid unless there are obvious scars on your body. Not sure if that was your point but Jesus this movie.
Omg why do people have to see a problematic thing on everything they see ?? No one knew that she was abused, how could they know??? She purposefully didn't show her scars and didn't say anything about what happens with her uncle. No one knew, not even her classmates, until The Beast saw her scars THEN he obviously realized that she had gone through something. In that moment he's like "Oh shit I shouldn't eat you, I shouldn't hurt you because you have suffered, you're pure". What's so freaking problematic about that ???
I’ll always say this and not to send shots to anybody but I’m glad I found this channel I was tired of seeing negative views on movies (Cinemasins) I needed more positive stuff in my life and I’m glad I gave your videos a chance you really go in depth with movies and always make me look at them in a different light, you also give credit to not only directors but the actors, editors Etc. Be subbed for a while and you never disappoint keep it up your work is greatly appreciated in 2019!
DISCLAIMER: As stated in the video, there are issues brought on by some of the more "comic" nature/twists of the portrayal. As someone with DID, issues and fantasy elements aside, this is still by far, the best, and most accurate portrayal of DID on film. I've made a point to have my family, and girlfriend watch this, and sit with them, anecdoting, and explaining as it continues, and it's made, speaking more correctly, our lives, and interacting with our loved ones much more cathartic, understanding, and healthy.
I’m a sophomore in high school in the states talented theater program. We use this movie, especially James’s role. The way he switches between several different characters within one scene can be so difficult, can’t help but praise him for the awesome work. Handling even one emotional character can be hard and exhausting, this is just brilliant. He is such a remarkable actor. Extraordinary.
Great video but I'd like to add my number 1 win from this movie: The music cue from Unbreakable starts in the scene before we see David Dunn, where the Beast is talking to himself in the mirror. As a huge fan of Unbreakable, I kinda went nuts when that music hit. It was like a nod to all the superfans before the Dunn reveal to get everyone else up to speed.
As someone who escaped an abusive relationship, this film actually spoke to me. No victim wants to feel weak or pitied and the line "the broken are the most evolved" feels to me like our abuse has made us stronger both mentally and emotionally. I wouldnt say it glamourised abuse personality.
usually if i stop a youtube video within the first minute it's to watch another youtube video, but if i do that with cinemawins it's so i can go watch the movie haha
2nd Posting in hopes you'll see and read it! I really hope you read this; because Lee due to a motorcycle accident then later a car accident where I rolled my truck and it was burnt to absolute cinders! The first accident I broke both of my femurs and my right knee; the second my tibia and fibula were snapped in half. As I am sure you can imagine this has left me with a lot of metal in my legs though what you can't imagine is the incredible amount of initial pain I felt or the insane amount of chronic pain I feel on a daily basis! Now the reason I hope you read this is because I want you to know that you and your videos make me happy, they bring a surreal amount of joy to my life with your videos! I cannot begin to thank you for improving my quality of life and don't think for one second that, that is not what you are doing! You make my life better and more enjoyable! Thank you, thank you a thousand times over then thank you again!
I love James McAvoy and he absolutely rules in his roles, including these. Yes I said roles, plural, because he does it so well you wouldn't think that the personalities are portrayed by the same person.
Everything Great about Jaws King Kong Avatar The first two Jurassic Park movies The first two Alien movies The first two Terminator movies Sixth Sense Fantasia Aquaman Incredibles II Into the Spiderverse Annihilation The first two Godfather movies The Toy Story Trilogy The Back to the Future Trilogy and finally for a real challenge Everything Great about The Room
thank you so much, for understanding that its tiring to see people with disorders are representative as evil or unbearable throughout films. I have DID, and your words touched our heart.
That Infamous reference. This is why I love your videos. Glad you got around to Unbreakable so I could watch the trilogy of your breakdowns and praise.
@CinemaWins Thank you. I'm in a relationship with a person who has DID and it is nice to see that someone addresses the fact that they are NOT secretly evil. My boys are good and hate the movie. Six years of a committed relationship and I love all of them.
This is probably one of my favourite videos that you’ve made, especially the bit near the end where you showed that no matter how good the crew that works on a film is, sometimes it just doesn’t work out. Good job
I just re-watched this last night and I forgot how much I loved it. Especially the scene that longshot of Dennis, pretending to be berry. He’s soooo good. Also, I do like the idea that the broken are the more evolved. I feel like it is very true in a sense.
Am I the only one who wants him to do speed racer, the imagery and cinematography in that film as well as the story behind it is amazing and underrated
CinemaWins -- You know what I love about your channel? You're not just doing these vids to be contra to CinemaSins (although that is an obvious immediate comedic aspect) - you are actually an informed cinemaphile, whose commentary goes way beyond simply "winning" some dumb surface aspect of a film (as CinemaSins is wont to do with its Sinning of logos, narration, etc.). I love that you take the time to do a deep dive in your summations (which, granted Sins does as well to a lesser degree). What surprises me is that you have so many Subscribers, given the lowbrow state of affairs in cinema today! Are all these people really appreciators of good cinema who value your deconstructions? Now THAT'S a Win.
The line "The broke, are the more evolved," is my absolute favorite. As someone who has PTSD from past events growing up, it made sense. The point of the beast is to be the superior being. The one to make the world better. It was through pain and abuse that created the beast, so of course the line is powerful. Those who are "perfect" doesn't know how others can think. Now I am not saying that it is the same in our world. The line itself helps me embrace my dark past and see that I am a better person today bc of what happened in the past. Now credit does go to James M. He sold this idea and feeling behind the idea. Again, that's just my thoughts
I never thought about why Casey was sleeping on the ground, but it makes sense the way you describe it. Like Hedwig wasn’t gunna do anything to her but he’s still snuggling her without her consent
I know this video is a few years old now. but i just got around to watching this movie last night. For context, My wife has DID with 14 alters. Alot of people in the community seem to hate this film because it shows the illness as the bad guy. I disagree with them. The director and James did an absolutely fantastic job showing what its like to live with a very severe case of DID. Alters are generally caused by trauma, and the fact that he had SO many means he went through a lot of trauma. memory loss from switching is also common. The way he acted out the switching and different personalities was honestly flawless, and my wife agrees. She was blown away by how accurate it was (yes everyones experience with it may differ, this was her opinion). James Should have won awards for this. The director must have consulted with patients and therapists on the manner because it was very well explained. holding the light, the difference in personality, the terminology, how some can have different tastes and allergies etc. the list goes on and on. The only scene in my opinion that was dramatized for film was the beast crawling on the wall. remove that and the movie was flawless. with the DID community hating this film, its a damned if i do/dont situation. if they made the lead an average joe with no real flaws, people would complain its to little and not realistic. over exaggerate the bad guy, not realistic. make a happy film about it, or god forbid a comedy, not realistic. no matter how they did it, im sure somebody with the illness would complain in some manner. that being said, if its talked about more and more, eventually those feelings wont be as strong. its still very new to openly talk about these things. in short, i Live with someone with DID and have to say this was done absolutely beautifully, down to the research and science. My wife completely agrees. she even had sympathy pains when he was switching like crazy at the end of the film lol.
I have a dissociative disorder and even though I've only seen clips of split, I commend it. I've seen "Unbreakable" and own "Glass" but haven't been able to enjoy Split in its entirety. From what I have seen tho, it portrays a lot of the main traits about DID well, especially for being Hollywood, Lol. It seems to highlight the pieces correctly. I think the DID community has plenty of idiots whose disorders are likely far less severe than they realize. The level of suffering and trauma it takes to produce full DID is incomprehensible. IMO, there are psychologist/psychiatrists who are not as intelligent as they think but manipulate for job security...same goes for the other sections of academia. Right now, the darwinian theory of evolution is being removed(or at least altered) from school books. That's right.. evolution is a false theory. Physics isn't fundamental and chemistry to biology is bad science too. We humans like to tell ourselves that we understand even though we freaking don't. I could on for hours talking about science... Anyways.. your wife sounds like she knows what she's talking about. Each case is as different as a human life is. I've had to learn this too. I agree with pretty much everything you've shared. I thought James McAvoy was SOOO good in Glass, and I really want to see split. I am going to have to buy a card so I can rent it cuz Ive been searching for a free version of split for like 6 months lol
Hey cinemawins, i just thought that you could do an everything great about the Dark Crystal, I love the film and it would be fitting because Netflix is making a prequel series comin out this year. Please consider this. Luv u!
Not related to this video specifically, but I would LOVE if you did a sixty-second review on "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse" I watched it yesterday night and one of my first thoughts was wondering what your thoughts and reactions would be. Generally though, your channel is one of my favorite places on the internet. While my inner cynic enjoys your converse, your channel has not only rekindled my love and enjoyment of movies, it has created a newfound appreciation for all the work that goes into cinematography.
I can't say how much I love this movie. To have 2 broken souls as the protagonists who in the end recognize each other as a similar being was so... great and touching. I didn't know that much about DID before I watched the movie but it never felt like it was trying to use this to be just scary but to show the positive and negative sides of this disorder. Just like Dr. Fletcher said "To me you are not evil... you were necessary." Disorders like that might seem weird and creepy to ordinary people but they are not bad... or good. Like the personalities are born to protect Kevin... that's what the human mind uses something like that for... for protection. And I simply love how the movie shows that to the audience, giving them sympathy for the "bad guy", even if he does terrible things to innocent teenagers. Also I could cry almost every time in the last view minutes when Casey is facing the beast. Yea "The broken are the more evolved" might not be true at all because you won't have superpowers just because people did terrible things to you but... as someone who suffered in life you might have a certain understanding for human behaviour, for life itself, for the people around you. That's a message I got from this movie even if it might not be exactly the one M. Night wanted to tell but (Who knows?)... as a person who suffered as well in many ways... it felt great to see a movie in which the "broken" people are not just weak or impossible to understand but simply complicated yet beautiful human beings who had to change themselves in order to survive. I felt like the creators of this movie understood mental issues and what it feels to be broken inside. And I felt ... understood in many ways by watching this film. Well... enough talking about the greatness of this. Hey, you broken ones out there. You're not alone! Always remember that!
Great video as always Cinemawins! I really enjoyed how much care you took to point out all the subtleties in McAvoy’s performance. Now for the love of Flex Tape you need to do Everything Great About: Sicario!!!!!!
Hedwig, after kissing Casey: "You might be pregnant now." Casey, from an alternate universe: "Yeah, but you have the cooties." Hedwig runs for dear life, screaming. Girls escape, roll credits. Guess Shyamalamadingdong didn't think of THAT plot twist.
As someone who knows a little about abuse (psychological, not physical) I appreciate your take here and of course M. Night's depiction. First of all: yeah, one will do pretty much anything to just get away, including getting into trouble and just zoning out... even in a crowd. The distrust in other people also becomes so dominant that one eventually just gives up trying to reveal it. Getting "betrayed" is a thing that most are familiar with, as in "but I know and they would never do that" or "Are you sure you are not just making it up?" and much worse. At some point one either starts to believe that it is "deserved" or one just tries to survive. Second: People claiming credit for making you strong and telling you that your achievements are because of said abuse is disgusting and unfortunately, in my experience, fairly common. It is by itself a continuation of the abuse by continuing to tear an abused person down. Any achievement one makes is done with a huge weight around the ankles while wading through hip-high water. It is done despite of abuse and never because of it. So to anyone who has ever claimed that their "tough-love" approach has ever helped someone: You are objectively a horrible person for saying that and fuck you!
James McAvoy’s acting deserves a million wins. Dude gave it his all and really killed the role
He actually won Best Actor at the San Diego Film Critics Society Awards.
yes yes and yes
His performance here is my favorite performance ever. No exaggeration, he just impressed me that much. This is next level stuff!
I've seen a few reviews of Glass and everyone has been saying the rising star in the lime light is McAvoy, they say he stole the whole show and delivers incredible acting again.
Do you know what movie NEEDS the Cinemawins treatment?

Didn't understand the acronym? Yeah, it's a mouthful, the movie is called...
Legend of the Guardians, The Owls of Ga'Hoole
This movie is PERFECT for the Cinemawins treatment! I've had it sinc emy childhood and since learning that this movie wasn't successful, I was disappointed, with all it had going for it, how could it have failed?
It had gorgeous visuals, especially a movie made in 2010.

It was called "a Star Wars ripoff with Owls."
It's time CinemaWins won this.
It’s funny how you and sins sound totally opposite just in tone. While sins sounds sarcastic and judge mental you sound sincere and polite
pretty sure that's the point

The fact that McAvoy did not even get an acting nomination during award season is blasphemous
"Blasphemous" your Cinemawins word of the week.
Great acting in a shit film unfortunately. Hard to get the individual recognition.
mcgoo721 Mind Telling me and the rest of the commenters on how it’s a shit film please? And please, due to his acting, I’m sure it’s very easy for him to get recognition to the great characters he plays as, now sit your hypocritical ass down lol
@@mcgoo721 I'm also curious as to why you think it's a shit film. I can only assume it's a taste issue or that it wasn't what you were expecting
hopefully this year he could get it
I work as a lighting technician in Toronto, and I got to work a few days on set of IT: Chapter II.
Holy shit for real?!
@@kingmuizz708 Yeah! Jessica Chastain and Bill Hader were there too. Super cool group they were.
You sir are lucky
I really like this comment, because MacAvoy is an awesome guy, and your comment really supports the whole speech CinemaWins gave on how huge crews come together to make big movies. From the actors to the lighting technicians everyone just works to make something awesome. Glad you got to meet the guy too.
McAvoy, playing Dennis, pretending to be Barry.
"I'm the dude playing the dude, disguised as another dude"
McAvoy kicks ass on every movie that he’s in. He even made Dark Phoenix SOMEWHAT enjoyable.
“I’m a dude playing a dude who’s in the body of another dude coexisting with over 20 other dudes”
Is James McAvoy always a win yet? If not, here's where it starts I think
You should watch Filth
I personally came across him when I girl I was with back in 2007 was obsessed over the Dune series. I listened to entertain her at first, because I cared and we were close. Then she really got me into it. Ordered the books and started to read it together and surprised her with the series and we watched it together. Even back then, as Leto, something about him jumped out to me, especially during the training scene and it slowed to show how he was having fun and catching on, something about that expression...
Johan Jarry Filth is an amazing movie
James McAvoy deserved an Oscar nomination for best actor for this brilliant performance. He was snubbed I'm telling you.
Absoulutely! how does a performance like this get ignored!? It's not just that he's playing multiple characters, It's that you see him change characters through his physicality alone! this was an amazing performance.
Well if MatPat was right in his theory, people like James McAvoy don't get the awards until they are like 50.
I honestly think it was because the film was released in January. The Academy always seems to forget about films released earlier in the year.
@@montyrobertson7362 isn't January generally a throwaway month for movies? I heard somewhere that if you don't expect a movie to do well anyways, they'll get released in January because most award shows are either already going on or will be soon so January released don't qualify
They qualify, but the Academy rarely goes that far back.
In my head cinemasins and cinemawins go like this:
Cinemasins: ew a movie
Cinemawins: wow a movie
Akseli Larikka same
Pretty much it
What I do is I subtract wins from sins and bam a movies rating
Akseli Larikka you should watch everything wrong with Pete’s dragon!! The hatred between Chris and Jeremy.

The DID representation is just awful though

So true. By heart just jumped.
The reason I LOVE Wins is because you get a real critique/ film breakdown of the movie along with the comedy. This was great man.
What did Cinema Sins do
for the record, i actually like sins. sure it can be a bit too troll-y but it's troll humor, don't watch it if you don't like it lol. wins has a bit of the same (winning hugs, winning sweet cute things that have no real plot value, etc) at the surface they're both humor channels. i just happen to like win's extra critique is all.
@@agustinbaletti Let me guess.. You haven't watched "Everything wrong with CinemaSins". If you haven't, then who is the ignorant? The channel is just for comedy purpose. And it has 8.2m subscribers. So, take it f*cking easy..
The thing that I don’t like about sins is sometimes he sins something for no reason
Samuel L Jackson mentioned that M Night told him that Unbreakable was supposed to be the 1st part of a trilogy BEFORE they started shooting it.
Leslie White yeah apparently he's had this screenplay for a while, which would explain why it wasn't total garbage like his other recent movies.
@Abell379 I actually loved Glass, I'll admit that the chekov's gun that Elijah promised didn't end up happening but I still ended up loving the movie as a whole, and I've watched it 3 times already
Unbreakable, Breakable and Broken. The original names he planned for the trilogy back then.
@@IvyHilts I wonder what could have been if the original trilogy idea for Unbreakable was actually made.
It made me feel like this to
Damn bro you high af😂
Did Hedwig say" they dont tell me much, I just ate a hotdog."

Yes yes he did I ate a hotdog while watching this movie
13:53
I've dealt with it, and I had the same reaction.
I cried then too, except my scars were on the inside.
I cried a lot as well

Wow.

Christopher Titus' first comedy special "Norman Rockwell is bleeding" was entirely themed around the idea of broken people. its a very funny, but also very REAL show. it opens with
"So it seems that because of every syndrome and disorder we've invented in the past twenty years, the Los Angeles Times reported that 63% of American families are now considered dysfunctional. My God! That means we're the majority."
he goes darker then any comic i've seen, but also offers that it can make you stronger.
Yeah, ik its way after this video release but fuck it
The presentation of those things was great and they portrayed DID amazingly well, except for the clothes, nobody got time for that but for audience and stylistic sake, its good.
I seriously love this film, they did so much right for DID, Mental illness, film making, scripting
just all of its amazing.

About that part where you talked about all the people working on Shyamalan films, I‘ve got to say something (or quote it, I guess): “The movie making process from start to finish is so chaotic that it’s a miracle that any movies are any good” -NandovMovies
Unless you are Christopher Nolan, and you planned every single detail with 10 years of anticipation.
The scene where Casey's scars are shown (from someone who has to stare at their own self harm scars daily) had a couple things happening for me
A.) Pride that self harm and abuse were portrayed very accurately, as someone who has self harmed and continues to deal with it I wear heavy jackets that would be hard to accidentally reveal something like how Casey wore many shirts to hide her own
B.) The part where "The Beast" was talking about how the abused are pure cause they know true pain was tacky but also made it seem like they wanted to appeal to this kind of audience
C.) I tensed up cause it was out of the blue for me as someone who deals with self harm seeing somebody else's scars triggered both a sense of empathy and a need to help and had me subconsciously feeling my own wrists and upper arms to feel my own scars, something that some people who deal with this kind of thing do cause it reminds them of the pain they inflicted on themselves
Over all the scene was fantastic and we'll shot, the struggle of self harm and sexual abuse was portrayed very well to a point where id almost say someone on the staff knew what was happening or at least did their research
If you'd like to ask questions message me on Instagram @metalconcertphotos
I always enjoy answering questions and helping people understand better what it's like
I'm glad someone's actually talking about this scene in the comments.
EpicSpartan should I kill myself my life is real bad
@@annegrey3780 it is sort of romanticising abuse with that narrative and came across as this "you're stronger, purer and better than people who haven't been the victim of abuse" but I also think these were only portrayed as insane ramblings of the beast/other DID personalities and deserve not to be taken seriously.
@@annegrey3780 I think people miss a part of the narrative and two key components that help it step away from the usual trite "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" trope:
1) Those who were "broken" and were not "more evolved" are dead
2) The Beast isn't a scientist or philosopher but an alter developed as an Othering of the Shadow and a broken coping mechanism that takes the darkness and puts it to use.

Best bit about the video itself. It holds true for a lot of films that have a ton of talented cast and crew behind it, yet, for some reason or another, just doesn't work out the way one intends. Anything can happen.

Pretty sure what you said about Casey is exactly what the movie was going for.

McAvoy deserved some kind of award nod for his role in this movie. I do not like horror/suspense movies all that much but this one was great.

Could you please do everything great about Treasure Planet.
I feel the same way...
@@zachengel196 I was just about to say the same thing, but to be fair Billy was on both sides of the fence on this one.
True
Omg why do people have to see a problematic thing on everything they see ?? No one knew that she was abused, how could they know??? She purposefully didn't show her scars and didn't say anything about what happens with her uncle. No one knew, not even her classmates, until The Beast saw her scars THEN he obviously realized that she had gone through something. In that moment he's like "Oh shit I shouldn't eat you, I shouldn't hurt you because you have suffered, you're pure". What's so freaking problematic about that ???
Coming from someone who suffers from DID this movie is practically spot on to what I go through on a day-to-day basis.

Be subbed for a while and you never disappoint keep it up your work is greatly appreciated in 2019!
That Wix ad Segway was a bit of a reach but I loved it 😂
DISCLAIMER: As stated in the video, there are issues brought on by some of the more "comic" nature/twists of the portrayal.
Every time I see one of cinemasins' videos and then one of yours' I think that the balance of the universe has been restored again

This is my sister’s favorite horror movie, not mine but I still really like this movie
I think you'd like the DissociaDID she's absolutely awesome when it comes to explaining did since she has it, very informative
D
yes i love chloe!!
Hey cinemawins, i just thought that you could do an everything great about the Dark Crystal, I love the film and it would be fitting because Netflix is making a prequel series comin out this year. Please consider this. Luv u!
OH MY GOD Y E S. especially since I've seen way more people criticizing it than praising it, and I LOVED it as a kid!
Thank you so much!
Fletcher said "To me you are not evil... you were necessary."
Disorders like that might seem weird and creepy to ordinary people but they are not bad...
Now for the love of Flex Tape you need to do Everything Great About: Sicario!!!!!!
the way you articulate your wisdom is so satisfying :D thank you for yet another great video!
Hedwig, after kissing Casey: "You might be pregnant now."
Casey, from an alternate universe: "Yeah, but you have the cooties."
Hedwig runs for dear life, screaming. Girls escape, roll credits.
Guess Shyamalamadingdong didn't think of THAT plot twist.
HAHAHAHHAHA LMAO
Can confirm are littels would do that
As someone who knows a little about abuse (psychological, not physical) I appreciate your take here and of course M.
I have watched this video I don’t even know how many times, and I keep coming back. This is just one of my favorite videos that you’ve done.
Could you do one about The Emperor's New Groove it was one of my favorite childhood movies
