    God, Ryan’s simultaneous “Pheonix Down” is just so representative of his chemistry with Jeff. Love ya, big guy! RIP.

    Even after 11 years, I can still remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard this. It absolutely blew my mind.

  • @Tremblay343
    @Tremblay343 13 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    I wish they were recording the expression change on Jeff's face as he slowly came to the phoenix down realization.

  • @DrAmazing
    @DrAmazing 12 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    Yeah I was thinking this the exact same way. It's phoenix stuff you use on a guy who is "down"

    • @geoffsmith8172
      @geoffsmith8172 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      wait so people thought it was just the power of the phoenix which you give to people that are down? they never thought it was literally the down feathers from a phoenix? i think i had the same problem but the other way around.

    After all these years, this is my favorite moment. And I was right there with Jeff. DOWN!?

    OH... DOWN!
    That reaction is priceless.

    its sad that i finally made the connection hearing this

  • @Roxfox
    @Roxfox 14 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I also never made that connection. I had the epiphany at the exact same time as Jeff. Crazy how that works. This'll remain one of my absolute favorite Bombcast moments because of that.

  • @BurningDogFace
    @BurningDogFace 14 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I realized this years ago, but I basically had the exact same reaction as Jeff when the revelation dawned on me, so it was hilarious hearing him go through it too. Good times.

  • @Sleepgarden
    @Sleepgarden 9 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    I had the same reaction when "Miles Prower" can be read as "miles per hour". Played that game since I was 8 and never made that connection until recently. And now this thing.

    • @BlazeyHero

      You just blew my fucking mind.

  • @hefestus86
    @hefestus86 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm not a native speaker and had trouble making the connection, had to dig a little more until I realize that down in this context means the hairy feathers. Did not know down had two meanings.

  • @MetroidKingofMetroid
    @MetroidKingofMetroid 13 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I realized what they meant by down in phoenix down just as Jeff realized it, it's like goose down, I get it, all these years and I never got that.

    Dude... whoa.... Down feathers. I get it now. Holy shit.

  • @octocoq
    @octocoq 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I just never knew the word “down” could refer to feathers

    • @TrevorPhilips
      @TrevorPhilips 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it's kinda a forced double entendre.... pretty sure in Japanese they call it a phoenix feather or phoenix tail -- but that wouldn't actually by down.
      i mean it's an imaginary creature soooo... lol =p but I think the Japanese item word clearly suggest a phoenix tail feather, or tail feathers -- where as the English it's changed to a tuft of its underbelly down
      a change made because the obvious double entendre in english

    • @AndorianBlues
      @AndorianBlues 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TrevorPhilips what double entendre? "Phoenix Down" (down as in the direction) doesn't mean anything.

    • @radicalstanza3614
      @radicalstanza3614 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TrevorPhilipsA change almost certainly made because of character restrictions.

    • @sadscrub
      @sadscrub ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndorianBluesI think it might be that “down” can also mean defeated or dead, and when a phoenix dies, it is reborn. So Phoenix Down is literally a bunch of feathers but also a pun on its use to revive partners

  • @jynx13
    @jynx13 14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is probably my favorite Bombcast moment.

  • @FawksMacLeod
    @FawksMacLeod 14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @Mysterious0Bob 'Down' is another word for feathers. Ryan and Jeff just realized that "Phoenix Down" was literal and was referring to a feather from a Phoenix. Before, they just thought that "Phoenix Down" was just some phrase Square made up that sounded cool in Japanese but made no sense in English. I admit I was just like that up until a few years ago.

    Ah! In the Italian translation it's called phoenix tail

  • @TrevorPhilips
    @TrevorPhilips 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    think I realized in FF Tactics haha....
    think in FF4 it was just called Life but in FF6 tho it was Fenix Down, the animation had red feathers....so I thought it was from a Phoenix, but I didn't know what down was. then in FF7 it was just sparkles. but throwing Phoenix feathers with my Chemist at undead in FF Tactics (and no longer being a dumb child lol) I think I realized 'oh........ '

  • @tabcat
    @tabcat 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    It kind of helped that when I first played FF6 (or 3 as it was back then), it would actually show feathers falling onto the character being revived.

  • @Roxfox
    @Roxfox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To this day I refer to these kinds of epiphanies as "phoenix down moments". Weirdly, I just now realized I still put the emphasis on "down" in that phrase...

  • @bobafruti

    My first Final Fantasy was FF1, back before they even had Pheonix down. I remember naming a character Stac after my sister Stacy, and then using Stac (pronounced stack) as her name for months afterward. :)
    My mind was also blown when I listened to this podcast.

    @emperor0013 When I heard this podcast it blew my own mind as well, dawning around the same moment as it did for Jeff. I've been playing Final Fantasy games all my life, definitely weird that I never made that connection.

  • @golguin
    @golguin 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My first exposure to Final Fantasy games was Final Fantasy Tactics whatever year it came out. I assumed that the Phoenix Down name came from the fact that you throw the Phoenix powers on someone when they were down. All of my friends agreed that Phoenix Up would have been better. I didn't get the whole down feathers thing till years later, but I had the same reaction.

    It's considerably easier when the earlier games always refer to it singularly, in a way that would never be used in english. It's like saying "a rice". I'll admit, my brain just failed to parse that completely due to logic error up until just recently.

  • @jbradfield

      "Phoenix Down" is an item in Final Fantasy games that restores a KO'd party member. Jeff never realized it literally meant down (soft feathers) from a phoenix.

    • @IronicHavoc

      You hear it in America, but rarely. People will talk about down pillows/blankets.

    • @Dezmixbe
      @Dezmixbe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also, keep in mind that Jeff grew up and lived in SoCal most of his life, so warm clothes and other things with from down feathers probably entered into the conversation a lot less.
