Because I hate to hear a missed opportunity.
0:49 Ludwig upside down lol
r/AnimalCrossing wya?
I'm not a native speaker and had trouble making the connection, had to dig a little more until I realize that down in this context means the hairy feathers. Did not know down had two meanings.
Even after 11 years, I can still remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard this. It absolutely blew my mind.
God, Ryan’s simultaneous “Pheonix Down” is just so representative of his chemistry with Jeff. Love ya, big guy! RIP.
think I realized in FF Tactics haha.... think in FF4 it was just called Life but in FF6 tho it was Fenix Down, the animation had red feathers....so I thought it was from a Phoenix, but I didn't know what down was. then in FF7 it was just sparkles. but throwing Phoenix feathers with my Chemist at undead in FF Tactics (and no longer being a dumb child lol) I think I realized 'oh........ '
I think that guy yelled Cake Factory...
Happy 10 year anniversary to this moment.
it's a good moment
Here's to 10 more!
Oh, holy shit, I was just remembering this moment yesterday. Somehow I sensed it...
WHOA Down
I just never knew the word “down” could refer to feathers
it's kinda a forced double entendre.... pretty sure in Japanese they call it a phoenix feather or phoenix tail -- but that wouldn't actually by down. i mean it's an imaginary creature soooo... lol =p but I think the Japanese item word clearly suggest a phoenix tail feather, or tail feathers -- where as the English it's changed to a tuft of its underbelly down a change made because the obvious double entendre in english
@@TrevorPhilips what double entendre? "Phoenix Down" (down as in the direction) doesn't mean anything.
@@TrevorPhilipsA change almost certainly made because of character restrictions.
@@AndorianBluesI think it might be that “down” can also mean defeated or dead, and when a phoenix dies, it is reborn. So Phoenix Down is literally a bunch of feathers but also a pun on its use to revive partners
Whem giant bomb was peak, not like these days with twats like Ben and Jan
And now Giant Bomb is basically dead.
To this day I refer to these kinds of epiphanies as "phoenix down moments". Weirdly, I just now realized I still put the emphasis on "down" in that phrase...
After all these years, this is my favorite moment. And I was right there with Jeff. DOWN!?
i've never heard the term "down" like that so this was an eye opener at the time.
Shaun and Jen brought me here 😇
It kind of helped that when I first played FF6 (or 3 as it was back then), it would actually show feathers falling onto the character being revived.
Lol, man I miss them.. rip joystiq
Goddamn this episode was good
fuck this is classic
Ah! In the Italian translation it's called phoenix tail
I had the same reaction when "Miles Prower" can be read as "miles per hour". Played that game since I was 8 and never made that connection until recently. And now this thing.
You just blew my fucking mind.
If it makes anyone feel any better I only knew because my older brother (who is literally a scientist now) told me when I was younger.
YEA!! monomate, dimate, and trimate! I miss single-player Phantasy Star...
Maybe it is not a word Americans learn growing up? Because I knew what it was when I played FF7 many, many moons ago.
You hear it in America, but rarely. People will talk about down pillows/blankets.
Also, keep in mind that Jeff grew up and lived in SoCal most of his life, so warm clothes and other things with from down feathers probably entered into the conversation a lot less.
@@Dezmixbe I like how I stumble into this six year old thread on a nine year old video and there's a comment from two weeks ago.
I know people already said it, but yeah it only comes up with very fancy jackets or pillows. No one ever really needs to talk about the different feathers a bird has on a regular basis.
That's Rich Gallup, he was the host of On The Spot back in the Gamespot days. I think he was a guest promoting Kingdoms of Amalur at the time.
Dude... whoa.... Down feathers. I get it now. Holy shit.
I always knew this.... in FF6 you see a feather slowly fall on the person you are using Phoenix Down on...
Ugh, how the fuck did I not know this.
its sad that i finally made the connection hearing this
It's considerably easier when the earlier games always refer to it singularly, in a way that would never be used in english. It's like saying "a rice". I'll admit, my brain just failed to parse that completely due to logic error up until just recently.
Dimates AND Trimates.
Honestly I had the same reaction too. Good to know I'm not alone in this.
Yeah I was thinking this the exact same way. It's phoenix stuff you use on a guy who is "down"
wait so people thought it was just the power of the phoenix which you give to people that are down? they never thought it was literally the down feathers from a phoenix? i think i had the same problem but the other way around.
FUCK.
Ever since FFVIII i never knew what the hell phoenix downs were but during this podcast i got just a little bit smarter
Love the reference to Phantasy Star's healing potions.
Oh god. Mind = blown.
I wish they were recording the expression change on Jeff's face as he slowly came to the phoenix down realization.
I realized what they meant by down in phoenix down just as Jeff realized it, it's like goose down, I get it, all these years and I never got that.
@emperor0013 Probably because it's "almost always" depicted with a generic 16x16 loot bag icon on a menu screen, along with every other consumable in the game.
Was reminded of this after hearing Will Smith learn the correct pronunciation of 'executable' in the latest Bombcast.
Have played every Final Fantasy. Yet I just realized this as well..
awesome.
@emperor0013 I always thought it was another case of their other bizarre item icon choices.
My first Final Fantasy was FF1, back before they even had Pheonix down. I remember naming a character Stac after my sister Stacy, and then using Stac (pronounced stack) as her name for months afterward. :) My mind was also blown when I listened to this podcast.
OH..... DOWN!
@emperor0013 When I heard this podcast it blew my own mind as well, dawning around the same moment as it did for Jeff. I've been playing Final Fantasy games all my life, definitely weird that I never made that connection.
I seriously didn't get this 'fore I heard this on the podcast :-) English is not my native tounge though.
really? i understood the first time i saw phoenix down that it was feathers lol.
@jaeisk This blew my mind. When I was 9.
Wow, derp. Why wouldn't you think of that.
My first exposure to Final Fantasy games was Final Fantasy Tactics whatever year it came out. I assumed that the Phoenix Down name came from the fact that you throw the Phoenix powers on someone when they were down. All of my friends agreed that Phoenix Up would have been better. I didn't get the whole down feathers thing till years later, but I had the same reaction.
