I like how if you just approach the game with no foreknowledge, you would probably think that the video is where the real important shit is happening, and the intro text is just some cool-looking nonsense. Yet, literally every line either foreshadows those endings or reveals the actual themes of the game. (Spoilers below, obviously.) "The unsuppressed soul lets flow oceans of blood" - the first hint that your protagonist, Caim, is a total maniac. "The Watchers drink and raise high the basin of fire" - Ending C. Watchers laugh at mankind's stupidity, but they don't bother intervening this time because the dragons also got tired of mankind's shit and decided to do the job for them (basin of fire.) "Mighty generals hesitate beneath a crimson sky" - the sky turns to hell in the final chapter regardless of the ending you are in. Both the remains of the Union's troops, and even whatever was left of Empire's soldiers become much less important than the monsters drawn to the seeds at this point. "As the tears of a goddess flow, four lost temples forebode the coming of the queen." - The hint that you'll always lose all the seals because the Union's armies are hilariously bad, your companions keep screwing up and sending Caim in completely wrong places, and Caim himself would rather keep flying around and finding excuses to kill things than to stay and defend at least one seal. The coming of the queen is well, what endings D and E are about. "The dragon plummets from the tower of red thunder, and where it falls no-one has seen." Either you have not seen Ending E and this makes no sense to you, or you have, and this line is extremely painful. Oh, and you obviously have no way to tell from this intro that lovingly shows off the pact abilities of Arioch, Leonard and Seere just what sort of secrets they hold. And you certainly can't tell that the rambling hierarch who cannot fight but still wants to genocide subhumans is nevertheless the only one of them who can actually prevent the apocalypse, rather than fight on uselessly after it already occurred, or sacrifice half the continent or a whole other world in order to stop it.

I always thought the opening lines CHRONOGICALLY refer to the endings. The unsuppressed soul that lays waste to the world is actually Manah. In ending B, Furiae also mentions that a woman burned at the stake shall hold the world in a basin of fire. The crimson sky that gives pause to mighty generals is comprised of the dragon's fire. The queen arrives when all the temples (and possibly the instrument of the Gods?) İs destroyed, but while Furiae was 'supposedly' saved but devastated. The final one really speaks for itself.

Still one of the most weirdest, yet best games I've ever got to experience. Story was great, and they didn't hold back. The music is beautiful. I went in expecting the ol happy ending and good vs evil, medieval this, dragons, magic, etc. Turns out everyone in this game is pretty chaotic and corrupt and the story gets weirder and more depressing the more you get through the game. You, the protagonist, are corrupt. Everything has simply gone to shit. Every single person in this game has hit rock bottom. Drakengard universe is a world of extremely bad luck. You literally play as a skilled and powerful pact mute sociopath who really enjoys slaughtering literally everything he comes across that is not the Union, even going as far as enjoying his killing spree. He takes on entire armies full of red eyed crazies alone with his dragon. The game is pretty much evil vs extremely evil. Every single companion you come across except for Angelus (Except for one ending) and Seere are either assholes or deranged, there is no in between. One word about this game? Unpredictable. Just a question to all who played the game, did anyone else come to the conclusion that Caim is a freaken psychopath! We generally over look how video game protagonist can kill thousands & still be a normal person, but I think they went the opposite direction in this game. I mean few characters where mentally intact in this game & I remember one character begging Caim to stop killing.
There's a very interesting interview from Yoko Taro, the creator of the series, when Drakengard 3 came out where he goes a bit about this. Basically, he was surprised to see beat 'em up games giving you satisfaction whenever you attain a certain threshold of killed enemies. Because if you think about it, that makes you a mass murderer, a psychopath (which is also why the who Empire forces are mad soldiers). However, he figured later than you don't need to be crazy to become a murderer, you just have to believe that you are right. Which is exactly what Yoko Taro had in mind when he made Nier (won't spoil it but you should find out why it is, Nier is great)

Yes, Caim was a complete psychopath, he wanted to kill just about everyone, he only spared the dragon because he knew she had a common enemy with the Empire & he could use her power to kill more of his enemies. To me Caim was the Kratos before Kratos

The very first image you see upon starting the Drakengard franchise... the Three Eyed Gemini Is now tattooed on a newly revealed character in NieR Automata Oh what are the connections?
i Never really got a lot my self but my brother did and heres a bit of a spoiler the final final final boss is really hard to kill, even with cheats she can kill you with one hit and she shoots out the attacks like mad when you get further into the battle. like up to the point where you weld your door shut and you have hand gel to remove the cramping of your muscles as you go and mash the X,O, [ ], and /\ buttons. just to die for the seventh time only 30 sec in to the battle. (Im not joking it's that hard.)
This intro reminds me of the intro from Demon's Souls. Which is not a bad thing. And while I don't think Drakengard does quite as much with its subject matter as the later entries (Drakengard 3, Nier, and Nier Automata specifically) it still is an astoundingly strange, wonderful story :)
how much of the game's budget you figure went into the opening? lol. especially the bit at the end where the guy who got dragonbreath'd turned to a skeleton
The expectations that this gave me are very, very different from what the game has in store, especially with that soundtrack that sounds like nothing else in the game.

didn't like the game cause of the gameplay, but the opening, the atmosphere, some forbidden topics and especially the endings are fantastic. Though, i prefer Drakgengard 2's opening.
