My 2 older half-sisters were born and raised in Gatundu. They both married fellow Kikuyus and raised their kids in Nairobi. Those kids never learned to speak Kikuyu which never made any sense to me. Back in the day (80's) I think it was considered "cool" to only speak English or Swahili. Today, they're adults with their own kids and neither they or their kids can have a conversation with their 85 years old grandma. I think they were cheated on a heritage and my heart breaks for them. I'm so proud of Jeje for doing right with her kids.

No shame! People have freedom of choice, plus there're many languages to learn. Let people be.

@@Cfinnerty2023 'Mwacha mila ni mtumwa', if you know the meaning of this proverb, you would know why it's a shame.
Plus why would one want to limit their child to only learning one language, yet a child's mind is possible to learn even 7 languages. It's important to understand one's culture, and it's also an advantage to a child's development when they can speak more languages, not even thinking about career prospects.

There is no shame in speaking your mother tongue. It's not a measure of intelligence speaking in other languages. Your accent just means you are fluent in more than one language. Be proudly local, proudly Afrikan. It's who we are.

English is their first language, Swahili because they are in Kenya then French.I am preparing them internationally for the future not villagelly. I no longer live in the village where I grew, hence why should I migrate my children back to the village language just because I speak fluent Kikuyu and I am proud of it?
