Next week I will turn 58 years old. Two years ago I had a heart to heart talk with myself and realized that I was afraid to go after my dreams because the first time I pursued them, in my late twenties, I got my heart broken and my spirit wounded. For years I was afraid the go after my dreams with the zeal I had before because I was afraid of being disappointed and hurt again. I would make tiny steps forward then stop, not really having the faith to continue. One day I came to myself and accepted the truth that I was not really trying because of my fears. I decided to change that. I saw a video of Denzel Washington encouraging aspiring filmmakers. Denzel said "If you never start, you'll never finish.". That struck a never in me. Then Denzel went on to say that Barry Jenkins made 16 or more short films before he made his first feature film. After hearing that I said to myself I was going to do that too. I made it a goal to make a short film every month and after the 16th film I was going to make a feature. When I got to my 16th film I realized that I needed to continue to polish my craft making short films. Making a feature was not important to me anymore. i needed to work on my craftsmanship. I also learned and accepted that I was a "filmmaker". I didn't need fame and wealth to validate me. I make films, therefore I am a filmmaker. And my films are my legacy. They will be around long after I'm gone. My main desire is that I might in some small way make the world brighter, inspire others, and encourage others. I want to make films that say "I see you.". I want them to feel that someone can relate to them and their situation. I don't know if I have done that but that is my goal.

Life and "work"( ie: living a creative life) are indeed difficult things to balance, though I'm surprised that, especially at almost 75 years old, Bill seems to think it's "One or the other or "all or nothing". I get the need to always challenge oneself but this "need to prove to others" seems like such waste of time, but everyone comes from a different context which can drive us in different ways. Balance: SUPER challenging and that obviously means different things to different people. Watching this vid, it's easy to see Bill has some regrets about it all. It can be a lonely way to live and everyone has a different story they have to live into or write in their own way. Inevitably there is no one way. There are only choices we make and live with...for better or for worse. It's the living with these choices that we have to come to peace with. Thank you for sharing Bill.

The interviewer isn't really getting that it's not about setting your career first, it's about setting your work and your calling first. It's not about "career" but what you feel you are called to do.
I would add that nearly everyone is in a better position to explore their dreams, live some adventures, when they are young. When you are older, you might have a mortgage, car payment(s), career (not just a job), marriage, kids, etc. All these things make it a lot harder to "go on adventures." If you wait until you are old, say 50+ years, you also have to deal with health issues on top of the above and more. Its just less likely to happen, in my experience. Plus, if you are young and travel on the cheap, hostels, camp sites, public transport, etc., I think you get more out of such trips than when getting room service at a nice hotel.
Enjoy the flowers or buy a high end gaming PC and game on at max settings with 144 FPS! Hobbies are easy to find in the age of entertainment but old timers like these are not one to try new hobbies for fun! I’m never bored because I enjoy my free time. Work is important obviously for success but you GOTTA make sure you enjoy that free time. Workaholics sound like they enjoy their prison(work) more than their leisure(fun) time. Christopher Nolan is not sitting back smelling flowers with his wife; he's making films with her. She's been producing all his films since he was 19 years old. Same with David Fincher and Peter Jackson, whose wives have been producing their films since the beginning of their careers. And that's along with a bundle of kids. Seeing as they've been together for decades, I'd say they're not only happy, but also fulfilled.

For me personally that is "poor life" from a spiritual, moral and ethical point of view. I strive for something bigger, for something beyond the material world. So, talk about not knowing how to balance work and life. There's only 2 choices to him: either be a workaholic, or stay at home and watch flowers grow. He hasn't realized there's a trillion other options in between. Listening to this man's voice and looking at his face...he doesn't look or sound happy.
He's an extreme character and he's tried to have balance and give relationships their required attention and it didn't fulfill him but left him resentful. His work (which is HIS "life") gives him fulfillment like nothing else does. I think he's fine with his ultimate choice as it's based on what he's learnt about himself.
To his credit, they're not exactly asking the happiest questions either. Lol. He's trying his best to give thoughtful answers and he is 75. Cut him some slack
I feel for Bill Duke. I don't see my wife and 3 kids as much as I'd like because I work 55+ hours a week but I couldn't live without them. When I do see them I have so much joy. They wish I worked less but it's better than not having me at all. And because I work so much my wife stays home to take care of my kids and her own mother who has Alzheimer's. Life for me can't just be about work. But if Mr. Duke truly believes that his primary purpose on this earth is to be a filmmaker, then I respect his decision.

He's an extreme character and he's tried to have balance and give relationships their required attention and it didn't fulfill him but left him resentful.
His work (which is HIS "life") gives him fulfillment like nothing else does. I think he's fine with his ultimate choice as it's based on what he's learnt about himself.

I feel for Bill Duke. I don't see my wife and 3 kids as much as I'd like because I work 55+ hours a week but I couldn't live without them. When I do see them I have so much joy. They wish I worked less but it's better than not having me at all. And because I work so much my wife stays home to take care of my kids and her own mother who has Alzheimer's. Life for me can't just be about work. But if Mr. Duke truly believes that his primary purpose on this earth is to be a filmmaker, then I respect his decision.
