  • This is a quick and easy guide to Pfeil tools for beginners. The video will start with a general overview of the tools before explaining how the sizing of the gouges works, for example, what 12/1 means. I'll note my favourite tools and my personal preferences for a first time collector of Pfeil tools. I'll finish by showing the effects the different tools have on lino.
This is the second in a series of quick guides for printmakers, please like and subscribe for more content, and comment below if you have any questions.

I started the same way, I used a little Essdee starter pack and worked from there, printmaking is great fun I hope you’re enjoying it 😊

I am trying my hand at caricature carving but can’t afford a whole set of gouges. Do you have
a “V” & “U” gouge size that might be good for overall work?
    Thank you. Trent.

Hi Trent, that sounds like a fun project, it depends on the size of the design, but my favourite for detailed line carving is the 12/1 V gouge, so it’s 1mm in width with a deep sharp V. The U gouges really depend on the amount of space you want to clear on the block, I like a nice small 9/2 but I usually work a lot of detail and layers into 5x7 inch blocks. Hope that helps

I'm wondering if it's possible to go from wood to lino and back again, or if it's like fabric scissors that should never be used with paper?

Hi, you can sharpen them very easily, I usually sharpen my tools between projects anyways, and have used them on different surfaces before, their website is really helpful for info on various tools too, depending on your project. For example, they have specific tools for carving wood sculptures. Hope that helps

I want to start carving chess pieces, are these tools going to be suited for that or are they only used for linoleum carving?

Hi, I haven’t done any wood sculpture carvings before, but check out the pfeil website, they have specific tools for wood carving which would probably be better suited for your project

These are the ones I want. I have cheaper stamped metal ones now and they do not stay sharp long

Hi Bhim, I’m not sure what art stores are available in India, I haven’t lived there before, but you could join the linocut friends group on Facebook, I’m sure there are printmakers from India in the group who can advise on where they buy their supplies. Hope that helps.

Where are these two numbers, there are only one. I do not understand.

Hi Maria, normally when you order tools online they will have the two numbers listed on their website to show the size, it helps when you can’t see the tools in person. On the actual metal tool itself there is only one number, that’s to show depth of the V or U shape of the tool. You can easily measure the width of the tool in person (that’s the second number) or ask a staff member in a physical printmaking store, who are usually very knowledge, if you need advice on the size of the tool.

Hi Siju, sorry only just saw your comment, I bought my set from a little art store in London a few years ago, but lots of big art suppliers sell them online, good idea to shop around online to find the best price
