GE dishwasher fix for blinking light and won't start

  • I was having an issue where my dishwasher wouldn't start, the start light would just blink and blink. I found a fix online where someone said lifting their door up would allow washer to start up. I tried that and sure enough it worked, but it wasn't a permanent fix.
Called GE, since unit was brand new and under warranty. Technician came out and fixed problem in seconds.
Turns out, when installed, the installer overtightened the dishwasher, causing the top of the unit to get pulled up slightly and no longer in-alignment with the door when closed. Fix it to pull down on the top of the unit where the sensor is to get the sensor back in alignment. You can also shim down the middle to help push it back down. The technician recommended using paint sticks or shims to wedge the top frame down.
If you want to test if this is your problem, you can try closing door and lifting up on door, then pressing start button. If dishwasher starts, that means door sensor wasn't aligning properly and this fix above will work. If lifting the door doesn't help, then this may not be your problem.
    Hope this helps!

My $600 dishwasher did this; the “technician” charged $75. And didn’t have the slightest clue. Thank you for sharing, as I am an old lady on a fixed budget, listening to my machine purr as it washes my dishes now. I love 💕 you! Do I owe you $675 now?

Thank you for publishing this. What a stupid issue the manufacturer created for those of us that do our own repairs. I bought parts that did nothing to solve the problem, but a simple wood shim in the right place did it. I appreciate that you took the time to post this.

You helped me so much!!! The accursed dishwasher is wearing out, I think, and we recently had our countertops redone so when the dishwasher was screwed into quartz, I think it was put in a little tight and thus the latch doesn’t always connect properly. It took me some doing, but I got it realigned BEFORE my husband comes home from an hours-long drive for business and his evening WON’T be taken up by dishwasher repair. You’re my hero!!!!

I don’t think I’ve ever commented on a TH-cam video before but I had to thank you so very much for sharing this. We’ve only used our brand new dishwasher less than 4-5 times since buying our new home 5 years ago (we hand wash all our dishes) but for hosting bigger events and such, the dishwasher can come in handy. Our dishwasher had the same issue others were describing (blinking start light, but would not start) and with our minimal use, I knew it was very unlikely to be due to wear and tear. We like to try to fix things ourselves if possible and no information I found seemed to help. Your advice was perfect and exactly what we needed. I didn’t need to add shims or washers yet: simply pushed up the door a bit from the bottom of the dishwater to realign it with the latch and it worked like a charm. I’ll add shims or washers later if needed. You’ve already saved us in time for Thanksgiving this year (our annual dishwasher use, hahah), not to mention repair costs. Thank you so very much!

Miracle worker! I rammed some microfiber towels up there to align the locking mechanism better and it started right up! It is not the locking mechanism failing itself, or the control panel - as many fix-it article suggest. It was much more simple and something that cannot be found in any manual. Thank you!

Hi All, I was having problems with my new GE dishwasher (with sanitize wash cycle and 54 decibel quiet model) it would randomly run once in a while (about every other month).
I used it about 8 times in 14 months. When it wouldn't run the orange light on the top center of the dishwasher door would flash orange.
I saw this video, and after watching I stuck a thin old calculator about 1/4 of an inch thick in the top center of the front end of the dishwasher. Right between the dishwasher and the counter top to act as a shim. It was like a miracle that small amount of pressure pushing downward on the top of my dishwasher was enough to get it to work. Now, it runs every time I push the start button. It's like a dream, and quiet too. Thank you. David. 01/03/2022.

Don't normally comment of videos but THANKS so much for taking time to post this video! We have a GE Adora and it's a shame that such an expensive dishwasher has this poorly designed and overly sensitive latch mechanism that's fixed by 2mm of downward pressure. We've tried so many things like replacing the latch, removing the door and inspecting the hinges... We felt we had been ripped off by GE.. Wished we had found your video sooner!

I was about to go out and get a new door latch until I saw your video. In my case when I closed the door I noticed a plastic oriented tick or crack/snap sound, as if the door striker was being forced into the latch. The door never made that sound before when closing until this problem happened. I didn't want to push down on the part of the dishwasher where the latch is mounted so instead I pushed up on the door, closed it, and sure enough it started up right away! It was definitely out of alignment horizontally which had to be what also caused that cracking sound. Thanks for your video!

thanks for the info. fixed my d/w in 5 min. Just a note to all of you DIYs...not unlike what the video suggested, the problem is that the brackets are pulling the top away from the door. Rather than try to shim the top down, or loosen the brackets (which are instrumental in securing the d/w, both aesthetically and structurally), try elevating the d/w. There are a couple of adjustable legs right behind the front toe kick

I don’t leave comments however this actually worked. My kids put the dishes up the other day. I tried to wash some dishes and I have been trying to do everything to figure out how to make the dishwasher work again. A bunch of videos started scaring me thinking I would need to get a technician I actually found this video pushed it down a little bit like he said and it’s working again like a charm

Thanks for the info ... I also have a GE Dishwasher and was having this problem ... When I looked at the sensor tab on the top of the door, it seemed fine. The appliance was set within it's own box like frame (housing) so there were no such clamps to hold it up. So to check this out , and instead of trying to put shims (which would only warp the fame of the dishwasher (in my case), I actually closed the dishwasher door, grabbed the bottom of it (the door), and lifted it upwards, thereby forcing the sensor tab to get (or sit) flush with the inner latch. Pressing the start button while I held the door up flushed in this position started the dishwasher right up. After letting go of the door, I pulled open the dishwasher door, pressed the start button to see if it was unlocked and working. It did, it seemed to have gotten reset some how, and thus everything worked. So the loose sensor fit onto the inner latch may have caused the controls to somehow trigger halfway. I realized that the control panel may be affected (since everything else was locked up) by the loose tab when I was looking at another you tube video. It showed the technician, after cleaning out the filters open the control panel to loose it. Somehow this reset the start button and freed up the rest of the buttons on the panel. Lifting or pushing up the door in the closed position and pressing the start button got things going again (or may have reset something) ... anyway ... the whole things works as normal now. So try this out first before shimming things up ... at least to test things out without shimming things up. I hope this might help someone ...

Lifting the door is where most folks start. I did the same, as I saw a lot of videos on TH-cam doing this (where folks lift the door every time.
Unfortunately the door sags back down and will stop the machine as soon s the alignment doesn't line up any longer. That's what I had to do for a couple weeks before the repair guy came out), such a shame that folks have to mess with that or this. I'm not sure why GE hasn't provided better troubleshooting instructions for installers and home owners on this. Definitely not a great/reliable latching sensor system.

I hate the fact that this DW does this - I so loved my old GE from the 80's.....push a button and it WORKED. What a concept.
