Overfilling a transmission is as bad as not having enough in it, good work Kenny.
If manufacturers would put a dip stick in like they used to we probably wouldn’t have this problem.
That's the truth. Thanks for watching 🔧
But the company saved 10 bucks by not putting a dip stick in it.
@@peterwill3699and the income from services rendered after the sale. I know of several people that have had worse transmission problems after service than before.
they do have a dip stick in, it's down below. they stopped installing the long metal tube that makes it easy for you, they are forcing you to bring it to a shop with a lift, in their small petty way. obama bail outs too big to fail, auto makers said they would make up the obama epa regulations in lost sales, on service.
went looking for the yahoo/aol/msn article i had read at the time but search results only turn up newest data so i am doing something wrong:
Auto Dealerships Suffered Largest Decline In 18 Years In 2008
By BodyShop Business Staff Writers
Published: February 24, 2009
A record number of automotive dealerships closed in the United States during 2008, and Detroit Three dealerships took the biggest hit, research and analysis firm Urban Science reported. The company’s Franchise Activity Report showed that the nationwide dealership count for 2008 fell by 881, or 4.2 percent, to 20,084 last year.

The decline was the largest since 1991 when data was first collected, with the bulk of closures occurring in the fourth quarter. Urban Science believes that surviving dealers will likely turn to service and parts to stay in business.
They want you to buy a new van. Our fleet of 28 Grand Caravans usually have the tranny and rocker arm problems. I have 360,000 miles on mine. Our drivers go 40-60K per year. And they are wider than a Kia, you can fit 2 bodies in it, side by side.
Coming from a guy that has rebuilt countless Chrysler transmissions when the fluid is that dark and smelly it’s time for a complete flush and hope for the best.
Thoughts and 🙏🙏🙏🙏🤣🤣🤣
Fluid removal devices are golden for small engine work also as it makes the job so tidy and quick.
The secret is fluid is cheaper than metal. Changing transmission fluid helps prevent these issues. The 62te is already known to be a shitty transmission. Ignoring fluid changes compounds the problem
I would have just sold them a filter and pan drop with how dark it was instead of messing with the getting the level right.
Agree Kenny. The 3.8 is better than the 4.0. Had a 2007 Grand Caravan with the 3.8, never used oil always did normal maintanance had 290,000 and still going when I scrapped it due to being all rusted away.
Would it be better to just remove the trans pan and refill with a known charge?
I never have to guess with my manual trans
Happy birthday early
I used a pump from a shampoo bottle cleaned it out, attached a longer hose on it and pumped the flued out as a make shift pump once. It did the job.
Great ingenuity! That is a good way to get it done. Thanks for watching & keep wrenching 🔧
Happy early Birthday Kenny!
Good info Kenny
for all thoes that haven't done a transmission service and the fluid is getting dark, just do like I did for my daughters mail vehicles, when I did her oil changes every 5 k I would also remove about 2 quarts of transmission fluid and then add back the correct fluid that I had just took out...True not a complete trans service, but it slowly kept her trans fluid looking pinkish /red again and did it gradually and no problems with the trans slipping or going bad. the filter had been changed once at 60 k and she put on another 120 k with no problems before she upgraded to a new vehicle
I'm glad that worked out for you. Thanks for watching the channel & keep wrenching 🔧
Happy birthday. Thank you for showing how to check. 😮😮😮
Thank for for the birthday wishes 🎂
I have a different opinion from what’s out there for the removal of a dipstick/refill hole and this video is proof. In the past people would overfill their transmissions while the vehicle was still under warranty. They would damage the tranny by doing that. They go to the drain plug and drain out the mistake to the correct level but the damage is done. The manufacturer then has to pay for the repair and, since the level is correct again, there is no way to prove it had been overfilled even if the damage indicates overfilling. The more common beliefs are that they no longer make it easy to change your own fluid so that you have to go to the dealership to get it done or so that the transmission lasts less time making you decide to buy a new car instead of having the tranny repaired or getting a used replacement. The latter is the better option if the car is worth it.
How bout " Extractor Pump ". ..😂
I absolutely hate these vehicles with the transmissions without dipsticks! I've got a 2015 Chevy High Country 4x4 6.2l with the 8 speed transmission and I hate not having a dipstick! Thanks Kenny
Engines are coming that way but at least they're putting and oil level sensor in them. Not sure why they don't put a level sensor in transmissions 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Happy birthday Kenny!
I use a 10 quart mighty vac for draining and filling P.S pumps ,brakes , trans, rear ends , transfer cases , etc , life saver .
Good evening Mr Kenny, hope y'all had a great day and thank you for showing me you can use the oil dipstick to check the fluid. Now I also know that Friday is your birthday 😅, Happy early birthday 😊
Those 4.0 had alot more horses 🐎 than the 3.8 for those 2yrs they offered them, heard they were pretty reliable though. 2008-2010 chrysler 3.8 all used oil I think lower drag/tension rings plus quality control, while some required the 10-30 and others said 5-30 while some said 5-20 and moral was down being owned and managed by a hedge fund after mercedes did their damage and dumped them
Kenny, help! As you are no doubt aware 2019 Silverados have no ATF dipstick. Any tricks to easily/simply check the atf fluid?
Many thanks!
can i check my 2013 regal eith engine oil dipstick to check my trans fluid level
It's Friday here in STRAYA, so I can say happy birthday now. I hope you enjoy your birthday tomorrow . By the way you look much better with a nose hair trim and a shave. I enjoy watching your channel. I learn a lot. Thank you
😂😂😂 thank you for the birthday wishes. Meg read your comment out loud to me & said "I told you, your viewers notice when you take 5 minutes to groom!!!" Thanks again! Keep wrenching 🔧
My 2003 lpg BA falcon with a barra engine has 992,000 on the clock and still has original transmission oil and original starter, alternator and hoses it was built with, mostly all original parts still on it. Leaking head , valve and rocker cover gaskets. 2 inches of oil in each well, the plugs have been stuck in there for about 7 years. I keep it to see if I can clock it. But I wont put another 8000 k's on it before next January when the rego runs out. It has to much rust on the floor to reregister again unfortunately. I nearly made it. The barras are great engines, shame they dont make them anymore. They are very reliable motors. No dipstick on these things. So yeah, I guess it really was a life time transmission oil like they said it is. I only paid $1200 for it 8 years ago, so I definitely got my moneys worth. They are great cars.
That, my friend, is stuff of legend! I would drive that thing everywhere! Even if I didn't have anywhere to go. Thanks so much for sharing. Keep wrenching 🔧
Did overfilling cause dark fluid and possible over heating?
250,000 miles on your original factory transmission fluid? Curious as to why you don't change your fluid?
It's too late now. Meg says every day with that van is a gift. If I have to change the fluid, I will change the entire transmission. At this point in the van's life she is rolling out of shear will. Thanks for watching & keep wrenching 🔧
@@WrenchingWithKenny What's the minimum many miles would you consider it too late, 100K?
BTW I never flush my transmissions, I just do drain/fill regularly. Thanks for replying. Love your videos!
I won't change the tranny fluid after it has 100K. I check it regularly. If it's burnt before 100K I won't even consider changing it. The old fluid has friction material mixed in it. I stand by the old saying of dirt & debris keeps stuff together. Thanks for watching. I do appreciate you. Keep wrenching 🔧
I look at it more as the same oil that is usually run very hot recirculating for years and years. The stuff gets worn out.
I have seen automatic transmission fluid that is not even
' slippery ' feeling anymore.
I recently had my cars 250,000 mile power steering pump start growling to beat hell and before changing it out I decided to try a quickie flush without it running just hooking a hose to the return line and turning the wheel back and forth till it started coming out fresher looking.
Completely quieted it up.
I figure it might have been original totally worn out oil.
Worn out oil that doesn't lubricate very good plus friction material in it doesn't sound very good at any stage of the game.
Good mornig sr..happy birthday... and have a nice day. ..greetings from ensenada mexico
.. near your testings grounds.....😂...for your suction tube use a 1/4 plastic airline extension ..
😂😂😂 HI neighbor! that's a great idea. Thanks for the tech tip & watching the channel. Keep wrenching 🔧
Nicely done brother Kenny. I'll add my 'Happy Birthday" to the others now. I know it's not until Friday. Auto manufacturers are 'cheaping out'. Save a few cents here and there on every vehicle but it creates a nightmare for an owner. How much could a dipstick cost?
Seems like a lot of assumptions on how far the dip stick goes in. Not an assumption I would be willing to make on a customer's car.
merry xmas to ya.
Happy birthday my good man.
I use a manual pump action suction gun i got from Napa
11:50 the flat wall end of your tube is catching on the decreased wall of the tube to casing. taper the end of your tube into a cone and it will find center of the transfer wall much easier. think reproductive organs receiver and plunger....there's a reason it's conical and rounded, lol. also the gasket which i am told works as a reverse shovel to drag out other plungers deposits. learned that from a crazy female comedian from the hoosier state.
Once the first couple of service intervals have gone by without a fluid change its best to just leave it be. The worn clutches and steels will not like the change in lubricity.
I agree. In my experience it has not gone well when customers decide to change trans fluid at 200k. Thanks for your reply & watching the channel. Keep wrenching 🔧
Where can you buy that specialized Trans dipstick that you show in your video. I would rather have the official tool myself than try to make my oil dipstick work as a substitute.
any parts store has them
My Chevy impala’s transmission is doing something that I can’t figure out yet. When I put it in drive, I have no torque to get the car moving forward. But if I put it in first gear, I have torque and the car goes forward. I hand shift it and all gears work, even drive. It’s front wheel drive. Chevy impala and has no warning lights on or check if there is anything wrong and it states fine. I was thinking a key sheared off from a gear or something with the shaft.
Weird codes come from the fluid getting air in it.
Im scratching my head on this one Kenny. I have a lot of questions.
& of course in a situation like this one, we never get the full story from the customer 🙄
Does Dodge actually have a number that tells you what level is suitable from the top of the dipstick tube? On my VW you remove a plug from the tranny case and hopefully a tiny dribble will come out telling you it's the correct level. I never had a problem in the past with transmission dipsticks and no guesswork.
How do you know where the trany fluid level should be?
Most transmissions that don't have a dip stick have a level check plug you remove when filling once the fluid spills out that hole its full.
Wouldn't it be easier to empty the jug drain transmission see how much fluid was in there, then check spec on the amount should be in there
i've seen people hide slipping transmission by adding extra fluid to harden the shifting.
Did your valve cover shaped oxygen sensor come back with the check engine light because the pcv check valve is why the pcv valve failed yet?
I understand using the oil dipstick to check the fluid in the transmission, but how do you know what the correct level is using the oil dipstick when it has not been calibrated for the transmission level. Or am I missing something here?
if the scale is the same length as the oil dip stick
Oh Mr Kenny I forgot to tell you,got both mowers running again 😊,lol love the pretty weather but dang word travels fast if people find out you can actually fix a mower 😅😂
It’s usually bad or dirty fuel
I'm glad you got them running. Now you have a side hustle fixing lawn equipment 😂
@@WrenchingWithKenny 😂🤓 people can't afford new mowers these days, so I guess they have decided to repair the ones they have 👍
Leaving ethanol in the carb over winter causes lot of repair work and money.I can't buy ethanol free gas in any convenient place in Assachusettes,unl3ss you buy the premix for 22 dollars a gal. What a rip off that is.
@@peterwill3699 you can actually remove the ethanol yourself, it is a tedious process (search it there are yt videos) - if you keep your carb empty whem not in use it helps a whole lot.
It might have been easier to drain and refill to factory specs
no , this way you can see how much was in it.
That transmission also came with a lifetime warranty as long as you had the dealer inspect it at 5 years and 10 years
I see you mentioned that you won’t change transmission fluid with new stuff … just on this vehicle or all makes and models?
I do check trans fluid regularly. If it's burnt before 100K I won't even
consider changing it. The old fluid has friction material mixed in it. I stand by the old saying of dirt & debris keeps stuff together. Thanks
for watching. Keep wrenching 🔧
@@WrenchingWithKenny thanks sir!! Take care!!
This is why kiddies, you have a transmission oil filling tower. So unskilled use of a dipstick can't cause transmission failure....Such a hit and miss procedure with oil hanging up in that fill tube....🙄🙄🙄🤔🇬🇧
I absolutely agree! But this might stop some of them from over filling the trans fluid. Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your input. Keep wrenching 🔧
@@WrenchingWithKenny How it got past Chryslers Engineering design team is beyond me....😮😮🤔 Great video for the unwary btw....👍
Id feel better if I knew the stick was calibrated on one side for transmission
Me too. It would make things much easier. Thanks for watching 🔧
"It shifts odd when it gets hot". Did you even drive it enough to get it hot?
Just in case, Happy Birthday! 🎉🎂
Friday is a 3 days away and my brain has a hard time remembering what I’m doing tomorrow. 😂
Whats up with the audio volume? it's awkward to focus on your video when I have to adjust the volume level throughout the video
I would call this tool a "Power Turkey Baster", and yes "crazy straw" was that 70s/80s toy.
Kenny, is you left foot or knee giving you trouble, you seem to be limping?
That fluid needs changing. Pretty dark. Just think if there was a real dipstick this probably would have never happened.
grattis på födelsedagen Kenny på ditt modersmål😊
Tack!
Makes me wonder if it's splashing the dipstick as it circulates - making it look like there's more than there is... 🤷
And happy upcoming birthday!
But it is a pump, not a splash system
Happy Birthday 😂
So many choices...maybe fluid extractor😂
Oh my goodness! Thank you!!! It has been bugging me. Keep wrenching 🔧
Bigger question. Why the heck did the manufacturers do away with transmission dipsticks?
$$$
@@watchinglclowns9890 Yep. "See your dealer!" And it saves a buck or two in production cost.
Saves $2
Sell lots of replacement trans
so the stealerships can steal even more $$$ from you cause you take it to them to check!
I hate those 4.0's.
I am surprised that Chrysler doesn’t recommend changing trans fluid every 100k. VW group DSGs are every 40k with a ridiculous fill procedure.
another reason to steer far far clear of VW dsg / turbo whatevers.
How have i never seen one with a 4.0L
They only offered them for 2yrs extra cost. Higher Hp and tq they were hotrod minivans at the time was told pretty reliable too
Why not just drain it and refill with new? It was time anyway.
you are better off dropping the pan and changing the filter
no , this way you can see how much was in it.
Why don’t u change your old fluid out of your trans?? And happy bday
the old lore holds that if it's old fluid it is so full of loose friction materials new fluid will result in a slipping mess. I drop my old three-speed every 50k or so, get three quarts out (out of about nine total) Pour three fresh in. Seems to keep it all happy. I'd never just cruise on a huge scorched load of 'Dexron IX' or whatever. Dilute that damaged fluid!
That's a good tech tip. The van has over 250K on it. At this point it's so rusted we don't wash it either. Just in case the rust is holding pieces together. Keep wrenching 🔧
Thanks for the birthday wishes 🎂
They dont want you to be able to take care of your car
What a dumb cheap way of checking Trans Fluid, shame on Chrysler. Kenny I completely disagree with putting contaminated mixed old fluid back in. You just introduce a whole lot of contaminates.
The fluid was fresh overfill fluid from a PRO Master that was in a clean container. Same transmission. Same type of fluid. Thanks for watching 🔧
He's basically guessing on the fluid level. Why not drop the pan and put the correct amount of fluid in? Seems to me hes looking at the engine dipstick and guessing fluid level. Its all a guessing game here. Sheesh
My wife says your not too smart u would still need the dipstick if u did that 🙄 😂
Oh, a full sized Wangensteen!
