The Edge had a better standby battery life, the issue is you have to disconnect the controller from the Edge. The controller continues to draw power from the tablet.
I was just thinking about the aspect ratio when talking with others about the Edge. It would've benefited so much from having closer to a 16:9 aspect ratio to look better for emulators and cloud gaming. The taller modern phone aspect ratio is fine for strictly touch based games, but not in the other scenarios I mentioned.
Ikr. 16:9 is still the golden standard for mass media consumption. That's why I'm struggling to see the benefit of having a taller screen like 16:10 or 3:2. Some people argue about having more space, but what's the matter of owning a rotating monitor.
Im a big fan of big screens and my Dell XPS 17 has made me very much pro 16:10 aspect ratio...especially for story based and action/adventure games. The Deck has my attention.
@@SomeGadgetGuy I agree. I played Apex Legends Mobile (RIP) and the game felt cramped compared to the PC version. I found my fingers tripping over some of the touch layout. With a slightly taller screen, I think it would have felt better.
This was an excellent video. I appreciate the detailed comparison. I was looking at the Razer Edge. Kind of still on the fence because I love my Steam Deck but you are totally right about the portability.
If you have an android phone, you can just buy the controller stand alone. Its called the Razer Kishi v2. its not the "pro" version which is edge exclusive so no headphone jack.
The whole idea of a separate controller attached to a tablet makes lots of sense and gives amazing versatility to the device. But Razer has to improve certain things. The tablet must be at 7"+ inches (8'' like the PS portal would be amazing) otherwise as many viewers said, you can use your phone instead. In that size there is a valid reason to use the Razer instead of your phone and also to use the tablet for other content consumption. It would make perfect sense and I would buy one tomorrow as with one purchase I would have a tablet, a gaming console and a controller to use with my phone when I don't wanna carry the edge around.
haha the thumbnail. Good one. I do love the steam deck. I also love how many buttons it has. I was wondering id anyone would ever make a handheld with the 6 button layout from Sega
In my Opinion the razer edge is fine. If you are an android user, just get the Razer Kishi v2 controller byitself without the "tablet", or the backbone version (which I think Backbone manufacturs the razer one too, the v1 was made by someone else. They are almost* Identical.) It cost $100, and its great for that price. I currently am using it with my Z Fold and with Moonlight/Steam remote play(steam link) and emulation on my phone I'm debating if I even want the steam deck. And if battery is a concern, if your carrying the controller, you can def carry a small battery bank. Downside is you would need a beefy PC that can push 1440p 120 fps(which most modern flagship phone screens support) streaming or a paid service, and also good 5g or a wifi6 connection, which I get alot of people may not have access to in their location. and the headphone jack is exclusive to the pro version which is exclusive to the edge version...
Agreed Juan, folks seem to forget that the Razer Edge is also a tablet that can run your netflix, play Chrono Trigger/Asphault, read on Kindle and then do game streaming on top of that. I like that it's lighter than the Steam Deck. Technologically the Steam Deck is superior but it's definitely for home use. When I'm traveling on a plane or a bus? I want the Razer Edge. The Razer Edge, as far as I can see, still has more RAM and compute power than most similar Android Tablets on the market in a similar price range. I just want it to be able to play things like Motorsport Manager 3 or Real Racing 3. Will it? I don't know yet. I will test it on mine soon.
What conclusion did you come to? I get my edge in 2 days. I went with it since I have a gaming pc, think the steam deck is too big, and plan to play mobile games like COD mobile on the edge. I also expect to use it when sorting Pokémon in POGO since the screen is bigger than my phone. I have an iPhone, so I also get the best of iOS and android exclusives this way. Anything outside the range of the edge to do, my pc can and I can stream it
I wish some of these console oems that went thru all the trouble of building infrastructure to stream games and make sure developers still got their royalties...went with the emulation route as well for offline play. At this point its no longer a matter of royalties or hardware but "who's gonna do it?" Until then....
While I'm all for android gaming, this device doesn't make any sense. The main draw of mobile games is you can have them on you at ALL times, unless you're not carrying your phone most of the time, they come in handy when there's a sudden wait or anticipated one, but not long enough to actually plan for it. That's when you whip out your phone and start hacking aliens in XCOM 2. But this is a little too large to carry on you all the time, even if smaller than the deck, costs as much, offers considerably less. The size difference is not enough to make it feasible for places where deck wouldn't be. Deck is just fine for travelling, great for vacations and for playing in any place around the house, android is great for gaming whenever you've got time to spare. I travel with my Deck pretty much every day, never considered it to be a burden, you just need a bag that'll fit it comfortably. There's only two use cases where it would be preferable, If you just want to play the games that were ported or native to android and if you're emulating retro consoles. Pretty much all the ports are great, apart from Civ VI and emulating retro consoles isn't demanding enough to need the power of SD. Personally, I don't consider streaming to be an alternative to running locally, even if it is great and got a lot better over the years.
I have a Steam Deck, which I use as my daily driver PC and when on the road and the Razer Kishi v2, which is just the controller without the phone and no headphone port. They are both great for their niche.
I really dont mind 16:9 on the mobile platform. Most mobile games fit that ratio just fine and most android emulators have a setting for the aspect ratio. Something like the tab s8 plus is such an awesome tablet for gaming. Furthermore, that leads more into the second question, for me atleast I really would have loved for google to make an all-round gaming ecosystem between Stadia and really fleshing out the playstore. Having something where you can cloud game those beefy triple A's at 1080p 60hz or higher and then sink your teeth into more awesome indie titles natively via playstore rounding things out. Also with emulation on android hitting strides in the 6th gen of consoles and every handheld in history. The Android platform has so much potential. A nice switch like android hybrid console with a telescopic controller for on the go and a dock station for big screen fun could have been more compelling than something like a Steam Deck if priced and marketed appropriately
The Kishi controller is the reason I didn't buy another Moto Gamepad mod. I don't need the Edge because I have 9 phones but for an average user having a secondary small device for listening music, chatting, Instagram and of course gaming home does makes sense. The Deck is more like a gaming laptop replacement paired with a Laptop shell.
I just dont understand why aspect ratios keep changing. 16:9 is a weird ratio, but it was standard, meaning everyone knew exactly what 720p vs 1080p was, and approximately how sharp an image would look on such a screen. And 16:9 was/is fine for most media, from games to movies to photo albums. All of a sudden company x introduces their new screen at 35:21 with a resolution of 75e, and Im left frustrated that I learned this whole other numeric convention.
Marketing and lazy reviewing? You have a whole army of tech sycophants who really don't USE tech, and spend most of their time "critiquing" really superficial stuff. So those folks influence other to get pissy about things like bezels (which are practical) and the LOOK of a phone. Then you get marketing departments saying things like "consumers like bigger screens", so they want the bigger diagonal number, but the device still needs to be somewhat pocketable. A skinnier aspect ratio makes for less overall surface area, and they still can say "SEVEN INCH DISPLAY! WOW!" It's all a shell game of consumer perception.

The edge is for people who have an iphone, a non flagship samsung or an older samsung flagship. I remember my Note 9 having some trouble with the harder to emulate psp games like God of War. So, if you have anything older than the S10 series, then the Edge may be for you. The S10 can do most of what the edge can do. S20 and above can do what the edge can do. So, if you have an S20 or later, I do not see why you need the edge. Unless you just want a bigger screen. I would just by the either the controller from this video or the gamesir x2 pro on its own if you have the S10 or later. Maybe get the edge if you are looking to keep your main phone separate from your mobile gaming. I can see that. And, totally get the edge if you have an iPhone. You simply can't do this stuff on IOS.
I don't think I'd waste the money on the razer because I can emulate switch games on my galaxy S9+. You can get everything it gives you with a decent phone. Emulation is getting better and better on android, and having cloud gaming on top of it blows most devices out of the water. Still want the steam deck though because I want the PC experience without getting a PC.
the gist of mobile gaming is the unique interaction mode of a touch based interface instead of the buttons on controllers and keyboards on normal pc games
Question: can the controller be used with other phones since it's basically a Kishi attachment but with a headphone? I'm interested in getting this but selli the controller and using one of those Xbox controller mounts (Mag safe) to use as a controller instead.
Apparently, the Kishi controller for Razer Edge is not the same one as Kishi controller for smartphones. You may want to double check on that for better clarification.
I remember when phablets were all the rage. That was now. Most phones on the market would have been considered phablets like 5 years ago. That's why nobody uses that term anymore.
Well, aspect ratio changes made the marketing more confusing. Sure, we have 6" displays, but there's less screen space at 20:9. Phablets really were like mini tablets. New "big screen" phones are taller, but are trying to keep the width in check. I kinda miss the 16:9 BIG screen phones.
@@acwbit2368 He said android emulator... Steamdeck wouldn't run android emulator better than a snapdragon Gen 3 when it's running android natively. Plus snapdragon has ray tracing too. Plus with windows supporting snapdragon arm processor. It's only matter of time before someone emulated windows 10/11 on Android.
@@evilcrashbandicootthetouho2753 That's just growing pains. The steamdeck had the same issue when they started. They made a translation layer to convert windows games to Linux so games could run. Snapdragon and Microsoft are doing the exact same thing and they could do a better job than steam because Microsoft actually wrote the operating system and snapdragon actually builds processors. Valve has never really made a processor or an operating system. Microsoft and snapdragon could make a better translation layer than a steamdeck.
Both are made for the primary focus on gaming. Anything else is just a by product. With that being said, the Steam Deck wins hands down. I can play Android games on steam Deck but I can't play full fledged console games on an Android device. Best I can do is use emulation but that can only reach as far as PS2 titles with the user of AetherSX2. I'm using that emulator right now with my ROG Phone 2 but everyday, I wish there was a PS3 emulator that works properly with Android phones. It's plenty powerful enough to run at 1080p 60fps
Razer missed some major opportunities with this device... By just shooting for just cloud gaming... It's a full spec Android mini Tablet with wifi/ cellular service which could have been compete against an iPad mini... and or Switch OLEd screen... Not Steam Deck...7.5" or 8" screen slab 16x9 Ratio... 1080 P... Stylus support...kick Stand like a surface and 2 USB-C video out support...need I say more...
I think an apt comparison between these two maybe a Sega Game Gear versus a Sega Nomad...one was built to be a portable console, the other a portable platform for lighter games
I think the one thing people aren't factoring in is that you already will have an android or iOS device. Anything after that is extra cost and I just wish developers would start supporting both of those platforms instead of jumping on the proton x86 bandwagon. Like why do I have to buy a new portable device when I and everyone else already have a pretty damn powerful pc in their pocket. SMH
I own the razor edge 5g and love it I live on a yacht in San Francisco Bay I go all over the bay and keep great connectivity from Verizon hardly ever lags and I play games like fallout 4 and online games like battlefield 2044, the responsiveness and vivid color of screen is better than anything I've played I use it almost purely for Xbox game pass but have been streaming movies and playing wot on the android side I am have emulators as well and does well with GameCube,Wii, anything you want.
the first and biggest question i have is: what is the software support longevity? a lot of android devices give you 2 years, then maybe 2 more before some apps stop even running on the device. the second is: what is the razer like compared to something like the rog phone 6 pro? phone, camera, controller all in one. yes, you pay more. but carrying and buying only 1 device over 2? could be a practical solution.
Im kinda more interested in the logitec G cloud after seeing some recent videos of people still playing on it and enjoying it 🤔 Im just worried about support, but that's something with every Android device though 👀 I would love a steamdeck though. To just play games that dont come out for switch
My buddy TK covered the Logitech a bit. I think I like the Razer a LITTLE better as it has a bit more horsepower. You can stream a game OR play a lot more games locally.
The G Cloud is just a waste of money, unless you ONLY want to cloud game with it.... But it just doesn't have the power to do really any native gaming on it though! I also believe that the EDGE is a waste of money too, because you literally can just use a mid-tier phone with a Kishi controller and do the same thing for half the price, ESPECIALLY since the Wi-Fi model cost $400 (We're not even going to talk about the 5g model for $600 Haha) .... You can buy a brand-new Steam Deck for $400 that outperforms it in EVERY way! But its personal preference I guess, I just see both the G Cloud and the EDGE just being a complete waste of money in comparison to the Steam Deck!
people don't care about multimedia on a dedicated gaming handheld like a steamdeck or even the razer edge because everyone already has a smartphone in their pocket or an ipad at home.
Yeah 16:10 is slightly better for emulating retro games and in modern games you get just a little more vertical height when supported. Those rounded corners on the edge are totally terrible for gaming. I think another comparison is Dev support. I'm not sure about the razer but valve has a lot of tools for Devs including steam input APIs to make the experience better for users and dock mode while a work in progress is getting better and better and really getting good for some couch coop party sessions!
If your life revolves around this. It's time to get out more? I sat about in the 90's playing Doom and Quake wasting my life. Late 90's playing Unreal. If you are happy wasting years on of your life living off a screen? The only worthwhile time I had with video games was going to pubs and arcades. On the pier. Meeting people, being social and having a friendly competition. Hustling people on Streetfighter 2. if you want to play Retro games it's 4:3 or you lose tons of the picture or get that horrid stretch look. Consoles at home are a bit of novelty fun, to kill time@@RobertKirkpatrick84
I have both. But I find myself using the edge more. Because I don't really play triple A titles anymore. I more go with emulators and android ports of older games. The ONLY gripe I have with the edge is the goddamn aspect ratio. Razer, for future reference, for the love of god make the next iteration 16x9.. I have mine hooked up to a screen and keyboard when I'm doing shooters or if I'm doing office work or art creation (yes I use it pretty much as a PC replacement, sue me.) and the black bars that I have to work around are somewhat annoying. But it is easy to work around, just a little nit-pick.. it is why i loved the razer phone 2 specifically. Amazing hardware, able to play games, and the aspect ratio is better for emulators.
@@YcGamer. Depends on your use case. You want new games? Go for the deck. You want near top of the line android tablet that can do older PC games through emulation? (I'm talking Skyrim, legendary edition and oblivion and Witcher 2 and shit) Then razer edge may fit you more. The edge also has better battery life. See what your actual needs are and go from there, what are you Willing to compromise on and what you're not and the device that best fits, you should get. I personally just like the edge better because it fits my specific needs.
@@JPower123 yeah but it's just important to keep the battery in my phone full for important work. I'm not in the market for a portable console but if I was I would even consider a second phone before I would constantly using my primary.
Personally in my life there is no place for this thing. I have a Steamdeck, I have a top tier Android phone, and I have a Kishi. This would simply be a waste of $400.
Cool. Now imagine you're a tech reviewer who might be talking to someone with a Pixel 5a. And then you put the work into a gaming comparison. And then you get comments from someone else "but I already have what ***I*** need, this is garbage." And then wonder why people like me spend increasingly less time actually chatting in the comments.
There aren't still any legit Steam Deck killers other than Windows-powered handhled device made by the likes of AYA and GPD. The Razer Edge is another hot take on Android handheld device.
I love the edge you forget steam link is the same as the steam deck but allows you to play on any device and razer edge with GeForce now beats the steam deck any day I have the ultimate tier for GeForce now and they just released 4k at 120 for any device so bye bye steam deck plus GeForce now has a 10year contract with Microsoft
The problem with the Razer edge is that such a device is not needed. You can get very similar experience just by buying a controller (like razer kishi or backbone) for your phone, and the idea behind cloud gaming is that you don't need to buy more hardware just to play games. There aren't many good games which are native to android. The deck on the other hand gives you access to the largest gaming community. With access to quality AAA experience on the go. The experience of playing a game on the Deck is very different from playing on laptop or desktop. Also the steam community is great, you will find old 10+ years old title that someone create a controller profile so you can enjoy it on the deck, and these games usually sips power as they are designed for much older generation of hardware.
The Edge had a better standby battery life, the issue is you have to disconnect the controller from the Edge. The controller continues to draw power from the tablet.
Razer already fixed that issue, now the controller draws a minimum amount of energy when on stand bye

Is the steam deck more powerful than SD gen3 if I’m running an android emulator on my deck ? Gpu and cpu wise
I mean SD Gen 3 has ray tracing and Ai dedicated cores right? SD Gen 3 cost more than a SteamDeck... I'm going to say SD Gen 3 is more powerful
@@ShinyMooTankthe deck is stronger handles Ray tracing and AI is useless
@@acwbit2368 He said android emulator... Steamdeck wouldn't run android emulator better than a snapdragon Gen 3 when it's running android natively.
Plus snapdragon has ray tracing too. Plus with windows supporting snapdragon arm processor. It's only matter of time before someone emulated windows 10/11 on Android.
When people put pc games on snapdragon they can't run fast with full graphics @ShinyMooTank
My guy running ikko opals let's fucking go
Both are made for the primary focus on gaming.
Not Steam Deck...7.5" or
8" screen slab 16x9 Ratio... 1080 P... Stylus support...kick Stand like a surface and 2 USB-C video out support...need I say more...
Ikr. The 5G version can easily compete against Apple iPad mini.
Wasnt the older edge windows with a Dgpu?
I seen more people from fortnite mobile group mention this razer. It's look cool
I have both and I prefer razer edge because of the 144 hz
It's pretty fancy right.
Remember kids there is no thing as a steam deck killer so please stop saying that.
I think an apt comparison between these two maybe a Sega Game Gear versus a Sega Nomad...one was built to be a portable console, the other a portable platform for lighter games
Fair. I dig that.
@@SomeGadgetGuy I mean, also you were either playing your Nomad plugged into the wall or buying enough batteries to own a minority share of energizer
Does the Game “Dead Nation” works well on the steam deck?? I love that game so much.❤
It's OK. Lots of jank and frame dips. I think another generation more powerful hardware and we might have the PS3 licked.
The display ratio is not good for most content and the curved corners are a visual buzz kill for the content that does fit.
SMH
It's bonkers right. Folks are BARELY taxing their phones.
If you travel a lot I'd say the edge, but if you're at home then steam deck. Ideal situation is to have both imo
I FULLY support that recommendation 😁
the first and biggest question i have is: what is the software support longevity?
a lot of android devices give you 2 years, then maybe 2 more before some apps stop even running on the device.
the second is: what is the razer like compared to something like the rog phone 6 pro?
phone, camera, controller all in one.
yes, you pay more.
but carrying and buying only 1 device over 2? could be a practical solution.
ROG Phone is not a direct alternative to the Steam Deck. The "Razer Edge vs ROG Phone" question is worth finding out.
@@farishanafiah8461 yes, that's what I said.
Would it be worth the extra for a proper phone with game controls over the tablet with game controls?
No.
god fkn damn i just realised steam deck has symetric thumsticks yiiiiiikes
Does anyone know how Sea of Thieves from Xbox Cloud Gaming run on the Edge?
Im kinda more interested in the logitec G cloud after seeing some recent videos of people still playing on it and enjoying it 🤔
Im just worried about support, but that's something with every Android device though 👀
I would love a steamdeck though.
If you're into cloud gaming it's the cheapest way to go and you can use Xbox remote play or ps remote play
No you want 4:3
@@Nonegiven14582 the comment was comparing 16:9 and 16:10
If your life revolves around this.
They forgot the mic on the steamdeck
Oh I TOTALLY agree. UltraWide makes sense for my big old workstation, but it makes ZERO sense on a portable.
@@SomeGadgetGuy finally someone who speaks English.
Which one do you think I should buy?
@@159tony Thank you so much, this helped me 🖤🖤
Why not just connect a Xbox controller or headphones with Bluetooth to the Razer Edge
Can you play steam games with the edge?
Through Steam Link yes.
Steam can run pc gaming and android, the other is just mobile and emulator under ps2
I'm slowly edging on the razer 5g lol 😂
I see what you did there ...
My dude! 😂
I dont game at all at alll. I think that the steam deck has a better aspect ratio.
I think that the steam deck has a lot more utility, and I may as well use the expensive phone in my pocket for my gaming on Android needs.

And then you get comments from someone else "but I already have what ***I*** need, this is garbage."
And then wonder why people like me spend increasingly less time actually chatting in the comments.
@@SomeGadgetGuyI actually have a Pixel 5 lol, appreciate a comment like this and the work on the vid.
I actually just got the Razer Edge myself
If only Genshin had controller support on android.
Seeing folks still using it as one of their ONLY game benchmarks has been frustrating, knowing it's better optimized for iOS.
The steam deck is just so freaking big. Like BIG
There aren't still any legit Steam Deck killers other than Windows-powered handhled device made by the likes of AYA and GPD. The Razer Edge is another hot take on Android handheld device.
Despite how good or bad this is. Razer lied about its processor in marketing
Not the processor. The mislableled the RAM on the base model. That was a bad look, but it's still a monster machine for $400 and the Kishi.
12:23 anyone know what game he's playing here?
Pascals wager
Both are so cool and I WANT THEM ALLLLL.... Just because 😂 🎮
I mean, that's the correct answer right? 😅
Mobile games were trash steam deck can play mhwi natively.
Edge is a weird device with same price you can buy a phone with better chip
Not with active cooling and a controller you can't.
Can you use steam link on razer
Yup.
REALLY? MAN YOU TECH GUYS WILL COMPARE ANYTHING TO THE STEAMDECK LOL
Yeah... How dare I compare a mini tablet built for gaming against a mini PC built for gaming ... Totes crazy...
So basically.... Steam Deck > Razer Edge
Unless you want a better screen, more compact form factor, and better support for OTHER entertainment experiences. Sure.

Android is trash. You wont always have good wifi or 5g. Hence your razor is a brick.
Except for all the fun games it can play natively and often at a better performance per watt than the steam deck.
It depends on the game in question.
@@farishanafiah8461 not really due to decks versatility and price. Deck can run all android games via bluestscks. Snd its competitor is much pricier.
