Videos like this on mad max pop up from time to time for this game, that goes to show just how much gamers loved it. One of the best movie to video game adaptation ever made.
its one of the best games ever made, the leap from that too the narrowed attribute of video game adaption is hardly newsflash, its pretty much self evident but hey heres your attention little kid
Driving around in Mad Max was such a cool experience. I treated it like some sort of flow-state game, just soaking in the atmosphere, the sounds, the music, everything...it was such a decadent experience driving around in that game, punctuated by visceral violence. Mad Max was way better than it got credit for.
“Decadent experience” your misusing that work a bit there. Decaying or derelict would work. Decadent would be more like the last days of Rome. Rather than the ruins of a wasteland. Just friendly bit of english help for ya 😊
The storms in this game are terrifying and awesome. I almost 100%'ed this but then got kind of burned out from the repetition. Great game, definitely worth playing!
@@deenman23bruh I played 150 hrs of Just Cause 2 and only got to 2/3 of the world map. It was so annoying and the only reason why I stopped on PC is because the game is poorly optimized for modern PCs
The fighting may be simple, but to me what makes it great is the sound effects, the feel of it, it feel visceral and when The rage meter goes up he does some suplex moves that are cool.
Mad Max needs a sequel. In my opinion this is what needs improvement: - story - different bosses (all the bosses in game were the same with different paint colour - better character development - fuel needs to be more rare or hard to find - more variable missions Combat, car combat, world doesn't need to be touched.
I agree. Another thing I would say isn't needed but Definitely appreciated is a better soundtrack. it did the job but the soundtrack in the movie was like its own character. I played the game recently with the Fury road soundtrack in the background and it gave me CHILLS. If they made a more punchy soundtrack like that. That would be so sick.
This could have really been something in a sequel with modern tech. The closest we got was Rage 2, in the same engine with Avalanche involved. The world in Rage 2 has the look and feel of Mad Max. That game could have also done with a more cohesive and longer story as well.
I agree on everything except the fuel needs to be more rare. It would make the game boring. Imagine going to a convoy and your car just dies. I think the fuel management was fine, but more side missions, with an awesome story like in witcher 3, would do it good.
Fuel rarity is kind of a double edged sword. In the second installment of the Mad Max movie fuel shortage was the sole reason why the apocalypse happened but in Fury Road it's water. I'm just glad the fuel doesn't run out fast to have to fuel up so frequently. But yeah there are fuel cans everywhere. With "Gas town" looming in the horizon you would think that they control the flow of gas and limit it and the only way you could get gas was to siphon it from enemy vehicles once beaten.
I loved Mad Max, it'd really do well with a sequel. It got very repetative but the combat and car combat was amazing, the world needed more scenes like the underground place.
Yeah, that repetition, feeling like the worst aspect of Assassin's Creed but in a giant desolate wasteland, did NOT feel very good at all for me. Otherwise it was neat, agreed.
I felt like the melee combat could have been fleshed out alittle more. The biggest disappointment to me was the fortress bosses all being the same. That was just lazy. Car combat and the world design were the big highlights.
@@yaoguai8459 Fortress bosses, nothing but fetch quests, and the melee combat coming down to "melee another bunch of same-looking thugs without much variety in them or how you punch them", mhm. The finishers and punishers were damn good, though. Very visceral-feeling without being obnoxiously gory or anything like that.
Agreed, you’re spot on. It does get pretty repetitive, but the world, the lore, the graphics, and the consistency of its mechanics manages to keep the repetitiveness from getting boring. I love the game, man. It deserved better.
This game has one of my favorite videogame deserts, it feels empty but in a good post apocalyptic way. Not too crowded with settlements and not too lifeless, it's hard to describe but I really love it.
@@nunyabidnez9004 I think it looks really pretty actually, compared to other game desserts, the straightaways feel so smooth to drive on it's kind of relaxing. Definitely my favorite desert in a game.
I really hope this gets a sequel. I’ve been playing this recently. The combat just never got old for me. It was so heavy and rough and just made clearing out a whole group of enemies so satisfying
I LOVE the Mad Max franchise, movies + this game, but I feel like - like Fury Road - this game does not need a sequel (franchising). It would take away from the uniqueness of them...
Yes, exactly. I just bought in on Xbox on Discount for 4€. Didn’t know what a blast I would have. I was so shocked that no one knows it or talks about it. Sometimes it’s nice to just dive into a game, without checking the ratings first. It kinda destroys the surprise factor
One of my favorite parts of the game, that you didn't seem to mention, is when a dust storm rolls in. You're mostly blind, dodging lightning strikes and freaky enemies while trying to grapple rewarding scrap drops. Making it through one of those storms with your loot is super satisfying! Thanks Jake! Love the show brotha 😁
I loved this game, picked it up for dirt cheap without expectations on steam and finished it twice. Possibly one of the best movie to video game adaptations ever, aside from maybe Riddick: escape from butcher bay
Man, Riddick and The Thing are two old school games I still think about to this day. Both were ahead of their time. With Mad Max that makes 3 licensed games that were actually really great.
Exactly. That was my main issue. They should have given the Top Dog fights a little more time in the oven. Adding extra minions or fire to a boss arena doesn’t mean all that much when the boss’s move sets are all basically the same.
Me too, and what was great about 100% this game was that you could get everything by just continuing playing - I hate when you have to replay openworld games several times to get everything - this was well designed and nothing got too annoying before it was over - ubisoft could learn a lession or 5 from this game.
This game felt so good to play every single time I turned it on and had just enough challenge and places to explore that it was fun but didn’t over stay it’s welcome. I think it’s the best car combat since twisted metal 2
I got hooked when I played this a few months ago. I've never been more addicted to a game like this. Although sharing the same genre with other generic and empty "open-world" games, in this case, it doesn't feel like one. It made sense to scavenge and explore an empty open wasteland in the world of Mad Max. Also, the upgrades felt really good once you unlock them. Everytime you're in combat, you notice the difference if the upgrade is equipped or not.
@@j.pearce3981 I absolutely adore Mad Max and I 100%'d Rage 2 and its DLC. The latter's vehicle combat is much more basic. Rage 2 is a grotesque and kitsch post-apoc. I enjoyed its grind, but Mad Max is on a whole different level atmosphere and world-wise.
The moment this became a platinum game in my mind was maybe 4 hours into the game I did this crazy car maneuver where I hooked an enemy vehicle, whipped him sideways off a makeshift ramp (myself included), throwing him into the convoy he was protecting, myself doing a barrel roll and landing on my wheel heading right into the fray. It legitimately felt like an action sequence right out of one of the movies. Nothing was janky, sound design is top notch. It was amazing. I went on to do more and test crazy combinations but that was by and large my favorite moment. (the rest of the convoy heist/destruction was thrilling as well) Edit: I'll also say anyone interested, I implore you to try this game on its hardest difficulty. It really drives home the desperation and overall theme.
The vehicular combat is indeed fast paced and unpredictable. I like the unscripted moments like that that just work because it captures the over-the-top nature of the Mad Max movies. One time I was playing I drove head first into another car, and rather than colliding or exploding, the guy's car flew over me because my front end acted as a ramp. It was like that scene at the end of Beyond Thunderdome.
This game has godlike progression. You always feel like you're improving your car and getting better stuff, it's extremely rewarding. All the upgrades feel unique, all the settlements are completely different with no copy pasted stuff, and the desert is god damn beautiful. All the areas has completely different vibes and enemy cars and camps. Incredible game
@@JustinLesamiz You're right, I git bored of it within 2 hours and uninstalled. But I've played Mad Max to 100% completion twice, it just feels so much better executed
genuinely loved this game, it spoke to me on so many levels its unreal, from the way Max offers water to people in the desert to the haunting voices after you complete the story
I genuinely believe this to be one of the best open world games of the 8th console generation. Totally underrated, and it deserves a sequel which it will probably never get.
Mad Max environment is truly beautiful, day or night, the sky, sunset, storms, the sand desert, rocky mountains and so on. Also full of details and items from ALL the mad Max films, from the dog food to the lost children. It's a joy to explore. With some crazy hidden locations too. Buried church anyone?
The underground sections were all terrifying for me especially wearing headphones, you can hear every detail and sound in those places and I knew the Church was hiding something I ran TF outta there when I heard those creepy monster screams 😱😆
Are you reading my mind, Jake? I literally just beat this game 2 days ago. Freaking awesome! Car combat was awesome. Story was great ... it actually hit me in the feels.
“Game-ass game” is my new favorite phrase. What a perfect description! Tweaking your ride was my favorite element. Gathering up all the chassis and bit and bobbles for customization was so much fun. The world was worth exploring from one corner of the map to the other. Why fast travel when you can drive? Mad Max made those trips just a part of the game.
I started the game a few months ago and I'm still playing it now and still loving it. I can't play it as often because of work but whenever I'm up for some single player fun I start Mad Max up. Hoping they actually make a sequel some day.
Loved the 'risk it/play it safe' factor in the gameplay. The storm for example: you can go and weather it out in an outpost, or you can risk staying out and harpoon the crates for a huge scrap reward. Same is the minefields: almost all reviewer brings these up as the prime example of copy-paste activities on the map, but what it is is the same risk/reward opportunity. You can lead your pursuers into a minefield and you can be lucky/survive, and when they are being blown up, now that is the definition of REWARD for taking risk... amazing game.
Loved putting the super heavy armor on the car and driving into the storm. It was like driving a mini version of the War Rig from Fury Road. Anything chasing you gets blown up / blown away and you just trundle along no fucks given.
I absolutely love this game! Extremely underrated! I finished it multiple times and can't get bored of it. The car combat is probably the best I've ever played but it is the hand-to-hand fighting that got me hooked. As you said it is like a more brutal take on the Batman Arkham style of action with violent execution moves. As an MMA fighter I appreciated all the submission moves like flying armbars, guillotine chokes and many more. Also could never get enough of the slams and jumping drop kicks in slow motion, just super fun gameplay all together. Glad you talked about this gem seven years later.
What background do you use for MMA? Before I had a car accident that I lost both my legs below the knee from I trained in Muay Thai Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Since I've been wheelchair bound I absolutely miss training and fighting! Hope you have great success and fun training and fighting!
So sorry to hear about your accident! Wishing you all the strength in the world! My base was muay-thai but then grappling, especially BJJ, and boxing became my strengths.
I know the whole “It makes you feel like X” has been memed to death BUT this game really makes you feel like Max and the world absolutely feels like Mad Max. It’s a really great game.
I was playing this game on the night i was supposed to have my first date with my wife. I actually called her to cancel the date so i could keep playing and she made me go on the date. I now have two kids a house and a wife. Never actually finished the game for some reason.
What I love most about this game is the storms. There’s nothing more cinematic than driving on the open road, or watching from a cliff top, and seeing this ginormous storm crashing towards you. The adrenaline of having to quickly find shelter is amazing
One of my favorite games to come out that year , I've beaten it like 10 times and still get the urge to play it till this day. It's a shame it doesn't get the recognition it deserves, would've loved a sequel
I thought the Arkham series had a heavy attack after playing Mad Max went back and was disappointed. Beat this game 4 times on ps4. IMO if you rush through the story and do the minimal upgrades required to progress the story you get the full Mad Max experience. Nothing like achieving 100% completion in your sweet leather jacket and using the sawed off is so fun.
You can drive to the barren sea area Furiosa was going to escape over, find hidden areas that hint at the location and uncover secrets just driving around. Awesome game.
Really love this game. Let's get my only gripe out of the way: The devs apparently didn't have time to fine tune the balancing, so if you're a completionist or just like to see all the side quests, you get a lot of resources that hurt the survival aspect a bit (e. g. water/fuel are no longer scarce). The game could really have profited from an active modding scene to alleviate that. Apart from that, it just nails the atmosphere of the setting. It is also the only source of lore (canon or not) you will find about the world and how it got to that state. Many people think there was a nuclear apocalypse in the setting but it was actually environmental collapse with some very, very strange side effects, like the storms in Fury Road/this a game. This version of climate collapse also made the oceans actually recede, so half of the game map is former ocean floor instead of normal desert, which lends itself to some interesting variations on the usual sandy levels found in games.
@@draco_1876 It wasn't bad at all but balancing wise I would have made it a bit stricter. In my playthrough fuel did not play any role after the the first third of the game. Which is a bit of a shame because "fighting and killing for fuel" is such an important motif in the setting.
My actual reaction reading the title: “who’s ‘we’?” I bought mad max day one, and told all of my friends who had the current gen to get it at the time. I actually didn’t know it was getting mid reviews, because I had such a good time playing it, that I assumed everyone else was too 😅
I'm sure games like these get thrown under the bus due to reviewers having open world fatigue or being more hyped for other games as he admitted himself in this video
I heard many negative things, leading up to me buying it. I was thoroughly surprised and enjoyed the game to the point of getting the platinum. I don't remember much from the story but I enjoyed the driving and fighting.
Picked it up a few months after release, had a blast playing it, loved the car combat, the destruction, the sound design. Loved the barren wasteland with the occasional structures harking back to times past, the cool storms, the tribes. Yes it had go here do that open world jank in there but it wasn't bad, it made sense in a way, helping you upgrade Max & his car. Chumbucket was a goofy, endearing character to traverse the world with. I played it through over the course of a week or so with one requirement left for the final trophy, i knew attaining the requirement would mean doing another playthrough so i said i would give it a few months & head back in to get the plat, unfortunately i left it too long before heading back as the servers had been shut down blocking my chance of getting the plat which i was always bummed about as i really enjoyed my time with the game.
This game was sick!!! I remember how happy I was when I actually got the leather jacket haha and then when I got the actual“Road Warrior” gear that was even better!
I'm currently playing this game for the 5th time and still awe by the whole game, the concept, the world, the sound, the driving is so good. This is one the games that I pray for a sequel. Just so good.
I can't believe after all of this time now everybody's realizing this game was actually one of the best it's a shame but yep it's true this is a great game always been since day one it's fucking mad Max 💯💯🔥🔥🔥
Mad Max is one of the best gaming experiences I ever had. I'm from a desert, so desert levels are my favorite, and this game was one big desert level. I muted the soundtrack and put on full albums as I explored the desert like a real road trip. My only complaint is that story and ending are ass.
you did not mention how awesome the story was, especially last two missions...they were so dark & so well acted that the scenes became memorable and even broke me for a while because of what happened. I loved the game, especially the combat and how you can tackle it, the camps...everything was repetitive but offered variety of ways to do it and I love that!
Truee. But the problem i have with it is it was only the last two or three missions where anything happened at all. The rest of the game nothing happened
@@angelashinner I agree that the story doesn't really take off until the end, but it also has little opportunity to: Max is a character who's fundamentally lonesome, and it's tough to get the story to take off when in the first ten hours, he doesn't really interact with anyone but chumbucket. I think the character development makes more sense if you headcanon the game as a prequel to Fury Road, which makes absolute sense with the flashbacks in the film and the way max starts off, a feral man who very much looks to be roaming the "plains of silence." And it also jives with the idea that after killing Scrotus in the area around gas town, Immortan Joe would be hunting down his son's killer, leading to the intro of Fury Road.
Oddly enough, I found the Arkham style combat of Mad Max even more satisfying than that of the Arkham games themselves. Also, shoutout to the dev's ability to make surprisingly varied levels and landscaped with seemingly limited set pieces.
Probably because of the awesome crunchy sound effects in MM. I do feel that the Arkham combat feels better and more responsive compared to MM since he more sluggish in comparison.
much more comparable to WB's other franchise, Shadow of Mordor. Arkham's combat is all about chaining together and flying across the screen with combos. Mad Max is about brutally taking down individual enemies.
This game is running great on the Steam Deck as well, running on the very high preset, 16x AF and max debris it's averaging between 50/60fps,. Capped the refresh rate to 50fps to keep the framerate steady and it's running extremely well.
Easily one of my most favorite games ever. Playing this with a capable sound system takes the entire experience to a whole new level. If all you're listening on is your computer/tv speakers or a headset, you're missing out.
Not knocking speakers, but I am not seeing them over headphones. Granted, high end headphones but still. I got Astro A40s with a mix amp and I’ve never heard better. Speakers for movies and what not, but gaming, naw. I can still hear dogs, neighbors, the world. Headphones, all you have is the game. Picture the V8 engine being injected right into your ears. Different folks, different strokes I guess.
@@irritatingtruth9121 different strokes I guess I don't have a lot of ambient noise But it's spectacular regardless I started playing it again last night
@@irritatingtruth9121 Absolutely agree that everyone has a different take. In my own system, I've got a full 7.2.4 setup with bass shakers. A bit overkill for a 150 sqft room, but picture *feeling* that V8 engine as well. Every punch, shotgun blast, screaming rig and distant explosion resonates on a very physical level. This isn't practical for some titles, obviously. Until Dawn doesn't beneift at all from this type of setup. But for blockbuster action stunners like Mad Max, it rocks.
I remember seeing the game on offer for like 20 bucks and i was likd: "Ok i liked the movie, let's see the game" and being completely blown away with everything, such an amazing game and really glad i played it, favourite car mechanics for me.
Man, this is one of those games that simply becomes a cult classic. Is literally one of the best depictions of a Movie character into a videogame. This title stays up with titles like Rocksteady's Arkham series. The fact that they had the script from Miller himself and had consultation on development is amazing. Is part of those games developed with passion because the Devs loved the title. You are right in many points you made. As a closing statement I am proud it manage to harvest a Mad Max type of atmosphere all together, is not perfect but is great! PS: Here you go, you have a new subscriber. Keep up the good work.
This was a PS Plus game around 2017 and I had such a good time with this game. A few years later I decided to go back and complete it. Got through all the quests, great stuff. Unfortunately an update did something to the racing challenges so it's impossible to get the Platinum
A little, just a little mind you, more gunplay could have helped balance out the combat. Keep ammo limited and rare, as well as firearm types, and CQC could of been better. I don't like the hand to hand combat so much, to similar the Batman Arkham games system which I didn't like. Also fighting so many people at once hand-to-hand I dont buy in the slightest, even if it's just a game. Setting a future game near the Bullet Farm could help explain why ammo is more bountiful in that region, similar to how fuel is abundant around Gastown in the game.
Mad Max was one of my favorite games that came out that year. It definitely wasn't perfect and had repetitive mission design and structure but man was it a blast to just drive and make shit blow up with a pretty cool car customization for looks & combat. There were actually some good unique side missions that even had you go underground in some cases which was really cool and creepy. When I saw all the reviews bashing how repetitive & mediocre the game was I was honestly a bit surprised.. Maybe that's why we never got another Mad Max video game yet after that. It's a shame cause the game is alot of fun & had plenty of heart.
I still come back to Mad Max from time to time whenever I want a fun “shut your brain off” kind of game to play. I think the simplicity of the game’s narrative works because it IS Mad Max, that’s really all that world is. Hell, the entire plot of Fury Road was pretty much “they drive somewhere, then turn around and drive back.” But with Mad Max it’s not the destination that’s important, it’s the journey of getting there. That high octane fueled destruction and chaos that has pretty much become trademark of that universe at this point. The story isn’t complex because it doesn’t NEED to be complex. It’s just Max building a new car and tearing shit up.
I really loved this game so much. I went through a tough time in life and sold my PS4 and games, but made sure I held onto the save file for this game. However recently bought a gaming PC and got this during a sale and it is AMAZING playing it at 60 FPS
It's still only 30 fps on PS5/PS5 but even with a intel i5 8400 and GTX 1060 3GB you can run it in 60 fps and with DualShock 4 on Steam and it's one of the best open world games I have played. I'm sure Days Gone team took some inspiration from it in terms of car/bike and refilling it with oil.
This is crazy that you made this video. I downloaded this finally after picking it up for 5 bucks awhile back. I have my gripes with it, (I really wish I never had to get out of the car, or it was more fun too) but it is so much damn fun regardless of everything else. If you love these movies like I do, then the world building and characters is on point.
I remember when this came out and the developers said they made essentially an infinite open world. Basically you could go to the edge of the map and then just keep driving until you ran out of gas and then you'd get out and start walking and finally run out of water and die - something like that anyway. Dope game over all though, sandstorms are insane in it.
Yes. Originally the edge of the map (the big nothing) was an infinite sized area that had hardcore survival elements built in. Unfortunately they cut that content so now entering the big nothing just kills you after 10-20 seconds.
I've heard nothing but good things about this ... Never got around to picking it up or playing it. Seeing as it goes for nearly nothing on Steam, I'm probably going to grab it. Another one for the digital shelf 🤓
Absolutely loved this game. Funnily enough, people are talking about how the bosses were repetitive... I genuinely can't remember any bosses, lol. I just remember driving around leveling up, ripping down towers and infiltrating bases and beating up loads of people.
I just finished my 1st playthru of this gem and I absolutely loved it! I probably spent more hours playing Mad Max and STILL finding locations than I did playing Elden Ring. Severely underrated title, story, gameplay, and moments that were just badass. Mad Max is an experience I will not forget, especially the spooky underground segments! Those were my favorites and finding old photographs to get an idea of what the world was like before SHTF I also want to add how orgasmic the car sounds with headphones every time you turn it on and start driving. The action is great, there is monotomy after a while but I think it really fits the overall story and personal dilemma Max himself faces every waking moment. The voice acting was top notch, Chumbucket was funny, Griffa was mysterious, Hope & Glory were tragic, Pink Eye was cool
I revisited it a few months ago and enjoyed playing it much more than I remember liking it originally. I wish we got a bit more refined sequel (apparently as of Feb 6th a sequel game is in the works1) or mods.
One of the more memorable games I've played in the last couple of years. I got it as an impulse buy because "Mad Max" and it was such a delight. The storm chasing, with the flying loot crates, was such a fun mechanic. I still think about the ending once in a while.
This game was so underrated and awesome. It surprisingly flew under the radar when it came out but the insane, fun, car upgrades, awesome battle car driving mechanics and rugged atmosphere was amazing. The side kick Chumbucket was so cool too lol! I hope one day someone else picks up the reigns and runs with the concept some day.
I’m so glad you made this Jake! Mad Max is at or near the top of my underrated list. The game just really made me feel like I was in one of those movies playing out my post apocalyptic road warrior fantasy. I really wish they’d make a sequel.
I feel like you have mentioned this game several times and that is what brought it to my attention in the first place. I have loved the movie franchise for 20+ years but this game came out when I wasn't really playing any games.
@@Bust_A_Nut_bar what are some other classic movies that you think would be fun as as a game? In the same vein of mad max, I think games for Waterworld, Tank Girl, Omega Man, Scanners, Dune (not spice wars), Planet of the Apes, Fantastic Planet, and probably a bunch of others would be cool.
What would have made it even greater is if they would have made the Ripper available to everyone at some point. Wanted that car so bad but missed the chance to get it.
You get a like just for doing this video. I got it straight up at release (GMG were doing crazy discounts on launch titles back then). It’s really repetitive but addicting, and despite the repetition EACH OUTPOST IS DIFFERENT. Every structure you attack, from camps to the small ones where you just find some ammo and water have a different layout, it really make feel the world organic and realistic. It makes you think of how the apocalypse can look like. One could think that how can you make a desert environment look interesting and beautiful, but I would go out and say it was one of the most striking and beautiful games to look at when it was released. Then the gameplay was very fluid, once you learn some tricks and get some upgrades you can dare some crazy attacks.
The game that saved the open word genre. It's deceptively simple but there's just so much content in this game, it's ridiculous. The detail, the way each enemy campaign is a completely new experience, the locations are absolutely gorgeous and very intelligently designed. The details of the junk people use to build and survive, there's a ridiculous level of polish in every aspect of this game. Absolute masterpiece.
I so want a sequel to this game. Or at least a spiritual successor. It be cool to explore Max after the events of Fury Road, maybe even have Furiosa as a playable character or companion. Imagine the cool stuff she could upgrade with her prosthetic.
i was SO CLOSE to 100%ing this game, some of the hidden bases were crazy. Also yeah the combat was basic, but some of the later upgrades makes it pretty diverse for what it is. Loved it.
Im playing it right now, first time ever. It holds up. Gets a bit repetitive with me trying to complete all the regions bit still fun with all the upgrades etc. One thing I noted is how every enemy camp is a unique location. Really appreciate that. Besides the underground burrows of the Redeyes. But everyting else is a unique location. Pretty cool
totally loved the visual design of this game when it came out. Was super surprised that I ended up playing it until I got a platinum. Its great to see that its getting more attention after all these years
I started this game a few years ago and was really enjoying it but for some reason stopped playing. Now I want to go back and finish the story at least. Just subscribed to the channel. It's nice to have more content from you, Jake. It's great to have you in TH-cam!
I can play this game over and over again. Captures post apocalyptic feeling the best, with Metro exodus. Would be nice if next game would give you 1st person view option.
I really wish you had included sound from the clips in your video. The sound design in Mad Max is top tier. I've played through it three times already, most recently was in 2020, and the different sounds of all the actions, driving, weather and general ambience still stick with me to this day. I could hear everything with each clip you showed even though they were silent. Fucking love this game and it's one of my top favorites of all time.
I've started playing Mad Max again after a 9-year hiatus and really love it for the same reasons you do! It can get a bit repetitive but so what, it' still a lot of fun! Now onto Gastown!
I really liked the game. One of the very few I worked towards 100%. The fact that since october 2020 servers are down and you don't get scrap from camps anymore, it's quite the pain. But I've maxed all out, so it's ok. Very entertaining game.
Love Mad Max, the exploring, fighting, racing....the whole esthetic. Where Far Cry 6 felt like you were running across a made-up train set, Mad Max felt like this lived in world full of secrets and characters. Every time you walked into an area you never knew how big or small it was going to be. The only thing that I would add (and this is a request I have for all games) I wish they had a tutorial to refresh you on the controls if you had a couple month break and wanted to come back to the game.
I was guilty of buying this the same week MGS5 came out and I totally neglected it. Several years later I'm now properly playing it through, it truly is awesome.
On paper it all sounds so boring and same-old-same-old, but then the desert landscape is surprisingly varied and not >that< empty. Most camps feel very hand-crafted and different from each other, high up in oil rigs or in an underground airport. And the story gets better and better. The moment to moment vibe is really unique, Chumbucket praising the Angel of Cumbustion in a thousand ways. Sound design absolutely nailed it, the engines & the shotgun are spot on - and those dust storms, damn... It's deadly on headphones. One of my alltime favourites.
I had just watched another person talk about revisiting this game, and really like it the second time. I'm not a fan of car games, driving mini games, or the like. However, this band hooked me in a way no other could. I wasn't looking forward to this game when it first came out, so I rented from Redbox for a weekend, and damn, what a game. I couldn't get enough of it. But after I sent it back, and kind of forgot about it until a year later. It was on sale, so I bought and just couldn't stop playing. I talk about this game a lot, it's one of my favorite ask time games. Hell, I'm still playing through trying to complete every side mission, minefield, and the like. It's nice to hear like-minded people talking about it as well. Also, but fan of The Order: 1886. I'm sad it won't get a sequel
I'm currently 100%ing it again after playing it back in 2015, and it's fantastic. I'm building up the settlements, clearing every scrap site, and uncovering some cool as hell hidden areas that I never saw before (including some pretty amazing side quests). It's truly one of the best open-world games to date.
I really wish they'd made some DLC for this to give you more to do. I loved the game, but it was hard for me to replay it after I'd done pretty much everything in the world. I wanted more, especially those convoys that were so fun to take out.
Videos like this on mad max pop up from time to time for this game, that goes to show just how much gamers loved it. One of the best movie to video game adaptation ever made.
YUP
This game brought me back into gaming around 2019
I didn't get to play it though
Unitll the last hour.. yea.
its one of the best games ever made, the leap from that too the narrowed attribute of video game adaption is hardly newsflash, its pretty much self evident but hey heres your attention little kid
Driving around in Mad Max was such a cool experience. I treated it like some sort of flow-state game, just soaking in the atmosphere, the sounds, the music, everything...it was such a decadent experience driving around in that game, punctuated by visceral violence. Mad Max was way better than it got credit for.
Exactly!
“Decadent experience” your misusing that work a bit there. Decaying or derelict would work. Decadent would be more like the last days of Rome. Rather than the ruins of a wasteland. Just friendly bit of english help for ya 😊
@@GT-wo2oj Nope, I used that word specifically and meant it, but thank you for the advice, irregardless.
Amen bro
@@GT-wo2oj this a weird reply
The storms in this game are terrifying and awesome. I almost 100%'ed this but then got kind of burned out from the repetition. Great game, definitely worth playing!
the first storm was super cool and you got tons of scrap. but then it happened quite often and got annoying
Ye like he said only storms yield scrap crates (3×100 scrap + volition ability) but its dangerous acquiring them but worth the risk when need scrap.

The fighting may be simple, but to me what makes it great is the sound effects, the feel of it, it feel visceral and when The rage meter goes up he does some suplex moves that are cool.
the cracking of bones gets me xD
The fighting ISNT THAT simple, once you unlock all the upgrades for max youre a fucking badass.
Mad Max needs a sequel.
In my opinion this is what needs improvement:
- story
- different bosses (all the bosses in game were the same with different paint colour
- better character development
- fuel needs to be more rare or hard to find
- more variable missions
Combat, car combat, world doesn't need to be touched.
A sequel would be cool I like what I played so far
Fuel rarity is kind of a double edged sword. In the second installment of the Mad Max movie fuel shortage was the sole reason why the apocalypse happened but in Fury Road it's water. I'm just glad the fuel doesn't run out fast to have to fuel up so frequently. But yeah there are fuel cans everywhere. With "Gas town" looming in the horizon you would think that they control the flow of gas and limit it and the only way you could get gas was to siphon it from enemy vehicles once beaten.
I loved Mad Max, it'd really do well with a sequel. It got very repetative but the combat and car combat was amazing, the world needed more scenes like the underground place.
well said! I'm with ya
It felt sad, melancholy. It felt like an actual desert.
I hope they do!
You're absolutely right my friend. It needs a sequel.
@@cloudycolacorp I actually like Rage 2. I wouldn't go as far as saying it feels like a sequel to Mad Max but it's very entertaining.
They're making Contraband with Xbox Game Studios, it seems like a similar game but maybe not as fantastical
I LOVE the Mad Max franchise, movies + this game, but I feel like - like Fury Road - this game does not need a sequel (franchising). It would take away from the uniqueness of them...
Mad Max is a gem! Every moment in that world makes sense, so glad this game was made 👌
This game made me feel like a kid again, booting a game not knowing what you were going to find and instantly sucked into that world.
I have totally forgotten about that mechanic of the game. It was so unique, never seen anything like it ever since.
Yeah, sandstorms are the best part of the game to me too! Chasing those tasty loot boxes was insanely fun.
Funny when you see a storm kill a intel guy
This game graphics never gets old after years of its' launch.
Yeeessss it is awesome!!!!
I loved this game, picked it up for dirt cheap without expectations on steam and finished it twice. Possibly one of the best movie to video game adaptations ever, aside from maybe Riddick: escape from butcher bay
RIDDICK! Love it. another one for a video one day...thanks
Escape from butcher bay is one of my favorite games of all time.
Man, Riddick and The Thing are two old school games I still think about to this day. Both were ahead of their time. With Mad Max that makes 3 licensed games that were actually really great.
The Warriors and Scarface were sick too
It wasn't a movie to game adaptations aka a tie-in. It's a standalone game.
I really enjoyed this game, did a 100% run. The only issue I had was the saminess of the bosses. Made for dull points in a otherwise perfect game.
Agreed. And also once you took down all the gas tankers, which was so fun, there were no more to take down. Should have put a challenge to redo them.
The sound of the engines and beating the living shit out of dudes made the game for me
I played it during quarantine and had an absolute blast with this game!
Definitely overlooked
That's awesome
This game felt so good to play every single time I turned it on and had just enough challenge and places to explore that it was fun but didn’t over stay it’s welcome. I think it’s the best car combat since twisted metal 2
I got hooked when I played this a few months ago. I've never been more addicted to a game like this. Although sharing the same genre with other generic and empty "open-world" games, in this case, it doesn't feel like one. It made sense to scavenge and explore an empty open wasteland in the world of Mad Max. Also, the upgrades felt really good once you unlock them. Everytime you're in combat, you notice the difference if the upgrade is equipped or not.
play Rage 2 if you haven't already. same developer and vehicle play with Doom combat pasted on when you get out and explore. so good.
(the rest of the convoy heist/destruction was thrilling as well)
Edit: I'll also say anyone interested, I implore you to try this game on its hardest difficulty.
@@PlanetShlorpian Best thing is those moments are plentiful and spontaneous in the game and entirely without script.
It's weird that Rage 2 DOES feel so copy/pasted by comparison. Just same shit over and over.
@@JustinLesamiz You're right, I git bored of it within 2 hours and uninstalled. But I've played Mad Max to 100% completion twice, it just feels so much better executed
I 100% want a sequel to this. One of my favorite last gen games for sure.
genuinely loved this game, it spoke to me on so many levels its unreal, from the way Max offers water to people in the desert to the haunting voices after you complete the story
I genuinely believe this to be one of the best open world games of the 8th console generation. Totally underrated, and it deserves a sequel which it will probably never get.
I agree. It'll be difficult to make a sequel though. Story wise. Gameplay would be very simple to do.
@@jollycooperation7446 I don't think it would be that hard. Most Mad Max movies aren't even really all that connected.
That one buried house in the desert freaked me out a little bit cant even lie, and yes the game is beatiful!
The buried church was a favorite "fuck me this is freaky" moment in the game.. that and the mannequins on the plane
@@TheManHank yeah the mannequins on the plane represent the Lost children from Mad Max beyond thunderdome.
@@TheManHank the game even has a scary sound effect when u see the mannequins
Never actually finished the game for some reason.
its really cheap on ps4 right now
What I love most about this game is the storms.
This game is an absolute blast, I'll always vouch for it. Loved the driving, the brutal feeling combat and the weather system
Mad Max is one of my favorite games of all time. I think the atmosphere and combat are unmatched.
Yep saying the combat is visceral is an understatement
Shame we won’t see a sequel I’d buy it day 1.
Completely agree, the atmosphere of this game is Mad Max, simply Mad Max. Great game.
The survival aspect wasn’t even that bad

Mad Max is one of the best gaming experiences I ever had. I'm from a desert, so desert levels are my favorite, and this game was one big desert level. I muted the soundtrack and put on full albums as I explored the desert like a real road trip. My only complaint is that story and ending are ass.
You should only mute the OST and still have the awesome engine sounds buzzing in the background!
you did not mention how awesome the story was, especially last two missions...they were so dark & so well acted that the scenes became memorable and even broke me for a while because of what happened.

Yeah I was really hoping that Max could be given a choice or get to them on time, but damn all that effort to find Glory gone to waste 😥
Truee. But the problem i have with it is it was only the last two or three missions where anything happened at all. The rest of the game nothing happened
@@angelashinner you didn't explore enough
@@XRandomXShinigamiX I meant the main plot. There was no character development. I’ve finished 100% of the map twice sir lol.
I loved this game! The vibe the atmosphere were captivating. Highly underestimated. Perfect escapism.
I truly enjoyed playing MGS5, but I absolutely loved playing Mad Max! Really wish more gamers knew just how good this game is.
OMG I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE!!!
MSG5 got really boring, really quick for me but Mad Max was just super fun most of the time!!
@@maineman5757 MM combat feels heavier and Arkham combat feels much more fluid/choreographed. I think they're both great respective design approaches

I liked it a little better than the Arkham games too. While it wasn't quite as tight, it felt much more visceral and brutal due to the gun and shivs.
much more comparable to WB's other franchise, Shadow of Mordor.
Yes I can't agree more with that the sound design was perfect
I have a good home theatre sound system and man it hits like the movies
The sound of the desert and the V6-V8s... Oh my God I love this game.

But it's spectacular regardless I started playing it again last night
@@irritatingtruth9121 Absolutely agree that everyone has a different take. In my own system, I've got a full 7.2.4 setup with bass shakers. A bit overkill for a 150 sqft room, but picture *feeling* that V8 engine as well. Every punch, shotgun blast, screaming rig and distant explosion resonates on a very physical level.
This isn't practical for some titles, obviously. Until Dawn doesn't beneift at all from this type of setup. But for blockbuster action stunners like Mad Max, it rocks.
I just started this game today and am loving it.
Jake Baldino is a great reviewer and very honest. I like this channel and his Gameranx.
THIS GAME RULES, DUDE. Thanks for covering this special hidden gem. It got so underrated and buried under the bigger titles that released that year.

Mad Max is SUCH a cool game. The melee combat felt really flat after a while, though.
@@Str8Maddeness the car combat is sick af
A little, just a little mind you, more gunplay could have helped balance out the combat. Keep ammo limited and rare, as well as firearm types, and CQC could of been better. I don't like the hand to hand combat so much, to similar the Batman Arkham games system which I didn't like. Also fighting so many people at once hand-to-hand I dont buy in the slightest, even if it's just a game. Setting a future game near the Bullet Farm could help explain why ammo is more bountiful in that region, similar to how fuel is abundant around Gastown in the game.
I loved the melee combat in this game cuz it felt so crunchy.
Yeah this game's great. Good vehicle/character progression, a cool story with several awesome setpieces, and great gameplay
Mad Max is the game you got for 5$ that had you hooked longer than most AAA 60$ games. Still the best gem in the rough I've found. Amazing game
A gripe for you is that you have to get out of the car? Lol
This game plays so well because it completely sells the fantasy of Mad Max.
Mad Max is now one of my favourite games for all the reasons you just gave, along with Days Gone. Two underrated games that deserve to be played.
I forgot about this game, started it once, loved it but sadly never finished, now you made me redownload it and go for the Platinum 😉😍
@@PlaidSuitPinstripeWorld Ah that's a shame. I only played when it first released and couldn't remember exactly what it was like!
I've heard nothing but good things about this ... Never got around to picking it up or playing it. Seeing as it goes for nearly nothing on Steam, I'm probably going to grab it. Another one for the digital shelf 🤓
I love this game. I've gone back to it a few times now and I still hold onto hope we will get another bigger better version
Those were my favorites and finding old photographs to get an idea of what the world was like before SHTF
I also want to add how orgasmic the car sounds with headphones every time you turn it on and start driving.
This game was amazing. The combat felt so great in this game. It’s what I expected for a mad max game
This game is a lot greater than people think it is, it's great and the car combat is really fun :)
INDEED
One of the more memorable games I've played in the last couple of years.
I got it as an impulse buy because "Mad Max" and it was such a delight. The storm chasing, with the flying loot crates, was such a fun mechanic.
I still think about the ending once in a while.
I always sought shelter when a storm came.
Until I found that there were crates in the storm that contained huge amounts of scrap.
Days Gone feels like a spiritual successor to this, both in having similar gameplay and being incredibly underrated.
@@tylertheguy3160 I can see that. I thought Days Gone was underrated too!
I am currently playing mad max for the first time. It's so good.
I feel like you have mentioned this game several times and that is what brought it to my attention in the first place. I have loved the movie franchise for 20+ years but this game came out when I wasn't really playing any games.
Same
Wish I could play it for the first time again 😔
@@Bust_A_Nut_bar what are some other classic movies that you think would be fun as as a game?
In the same vein of mad max, I think games for Waterworld, Tank Girl, Omega Man, Scanners, Dune (not spice wars), Planet of the Apes, Fantastic Planet, and probably a bunch of others would be cool.
@@Bust_A_Nut_bar how long is the game?
It's a bit repetitive. But overall a good game.. I think Avalanche did a good job.
One of the most satisfying open world games in a while
The game that saved the open word genre.
One of the best open world games ever. The vehicle combat and hand to hand combat were excellent and gave the game a lot of variety
I can play this game over and over again. Captures post apocalyptic feeling the best, with Metro exodus. Would be nice if next game would give you 1st person view option.
the game already has first person when driving!
One of my personal favourites from the PS4. It’s a shame that we will probably never get another Mad Max game.
The only problem I have with this game is there is nothing to do when you beat it
I'm currently 100%ing it again after playing it back in 2015, and it's fantastic.
