I’m not new to building and modifying things but I am new to EFI performance. I’m trying to build a sleeper Tahoe and I want to be able to change things as my budget allows.... can I ask what type of program are you using to tune your engines? And where did you get it if you don’t mind sharing? I don’t want to use a tuner after I get the initial setup done...
Could you fit wider tires in the back without messing with the frame and suspension if you swapped the box for one off a truck with four wheel steering. They had about a three inch bulge in the wheel well
@@tylercooksey1353 he uses hp tuners. You can buy the mvpi2 on Amazon for like 200, and then it's a matter of purchasing credits for your vehicle. A Tahoe ( depending on the year) takes 2 credits, which will cost you another 100. And you can do unlimited rewrites.
By the time your son is 13, he will be a master fabricator and mechanic, like yourself. Great content and a fantastic display of fatherhood! You're the man LT
Lt, I absolutely love seeing the process of building this truck. I have an “ugly truck” as well except mine has a turbo 408 stroker instead of the big block. Even with the differences seeing your build is constantly giving me ideas
Yup, literally does nothing. Any slight barrier that the paint might add gets offset by the fact that the colour black sheds heat better than a polished surface.
Can we get father/son build-off with LT and his kiddo and Vice Grip Garage. I love how they both always have their boys on their channels helping and learning how to wrench!
My last dump session went so bad I took a break from my project for 6 months... going to be redoing some of my hard work then going back for another try
@@LawrenceTolman autocorrect strikes again! Not dump session lol DYNO session! My cj7 street/strip machine build... had fuel issues and tcm issues. Looking better now, just laid 350 feet of rubber down my street tonight
Painting the intercooler black is just helping hold heat in it. , After seeing this and knowing my 9.8:1 509 makes just over 900 on 10 lbs makes me feel good .
you are correct, the paint does have a little insulating effect, and I did acknowledge that in the video. Sounds like a badass setup you have! what size turbo to make that kinda steam?
15:43 all loaded up but a few seconds later at 15:47 thought the truck fell off. Awesome power numbers, cool to see an unusual engine get the turbo treatment.
Man that brings me back to when I was younger and I would be wrenching with my father and always bugging him to tell me stories about his muscle cars he had back in the day
A light coat of paint on the front of the intercooler won't have any negative effect on efficiency. As long as you don't paint through the whole thickness of the intercooler.
Stellar work. Nice to see things like this being done in a home garage. Set the parking brake when you load and unload the trailer...the parking pawl in your pickup will thank you for it!
I usually do set the parking brake, I spaced on the load up because I un loaded it hours earlier and had a zillion other things on my mind though... valid point!

WOW! Bigger numbers than I would have thought with stock cam and heads. Very cool project I’ve really enjoyed you building something so different. Look forward to the cool projects you have planned for the future. Black intercooler is definitely the way to go!
In theory, Black heat exchangers could radiate more heat to the atmosphere than bare metal exchangers. Blackbody thermodynamics - Been working on my friends 2500hd 8.1 and I guess YT pointed me in your direction. Looks like a fun project
I thought that would be much higher number than what you got. But you still got many stock items and will do much more once those are changed. Great job man.
im happy to watch this video. looks like your engine is cam limited and your n/a tune was incomplete. no worries though because you are heading in the right direction.
Awesome video LT. I can't wait for more on the Suburban build! Your videos have got me working on taking care of things on my 99' 2500! I'm thinking about your exhaust video, I have a blown out gasket between the cat & muffler. May to build a new exhaust!!!
I have 2 trucks with the 8100 one is a 2500 avalanche and the other is a 2500 sierra .... now I'm on the hunt for a 8100 suburban.... just a great motor ... yea it sucks gas but its fast and powerful and gets me where I want to go with less effort than any 5.3 or 6.0 I've ever driven....
make sure you adjust the mass air flow, if necessary, when you get home. Idaho Falls sits at 4705 feet elevation so the air fuel ratio will be off down south.
If you find an 8.1 2500HD lower valance it has the center cut out and you'll get more air to the intercooler. I put my front hitch there, but it would work perfect for yours too. Direct swap to the 1500 bumper.
Hahaha. I love that your boy was with you. I drove by a lil kid about his age in my pro street s10 today and he pointed and waved so I stopped for him. Gotta get the younger generation to love cars too!
Hey man, when you load grab a set of plastic ramps for under the rear of the truck tires. It will lift up the front of your trailer and allow you to load much easier!
I just got HP tuners myself and don't know anything about the tuning. I know there's tons of videos about how to do the tuning but it would be nice to see how you were adjusting your tune and how you read it and adjust it. Great videos keep it up!
Power numbers are awesome LT! On a bone stock 8.1L all it needs now is cam, heads, & a solid bottom end. An electronic boost controller push the N/A power to 500-600HP & you'll put 700-800HP at the wheels. By than the drivetrain will be screaming for an upgrade especially the rear end. Looking forward to the OBS build nice to see you bring your son along for the Dyno Run. To help load anything on your trailer. Take a set of oil change ramps with you. Place it under your rear wheels. It will get a better angle for loading. Badass truck though
Mighty car mods did a test between a black painted intercooler and a standard non painted cooler. I think if I remember correctly they said the black one worked a little better.... Maybe Ill have to go re watch the video. Anyways I don't think you will have an issues.
One thing. Put your tow truck in neutral and lock the P brake when loading, it can save your transmissions parking pawl. Like the videos on this though.

Could always have it coated with a thermal dispersing film, supposed to improve energy transfer 30%? The Dodge trucks for some years have to rely on it due to crappy condenser sizing & designs?
Very cool! But I feel like the numbers are a little low 🤔 a 5.3 on 8lbs makes almost as much as the 8.1. Obviously the 8.1 makes way more torque but I would have thought the extra 3 liters would make way more power.
I'm actually gonna make a video soon here comparing the two because one of my last trucks had a cammed and turbo 5.3 also on on 8psi of boost. peak to peak, the turbo 5.3 made 15hp more but 138 lb.ft. less...
It’s because of the cam profile of the 8.1. The stock cam is engineered for low end pulling power. GM had originally designed it for it to be a gas powered diesel substitute for heavy duty trucks. If he swapped the cam on the 8.1 with one that puts the power towards the mid or high end, he would see CRAZY hp gains. Keep in mind HP is just a calculation of tq x rpm’s. I can see him gaining something stupid like 150hp just from a cam swap. I’m an 8.1 owner and I’ve put a lot of thought into making some big power with mine as well lol.
