Sean Reinert - Gene Hoglan - Richard Christy - The living legends of drumming who worked on the most highly technichal stuff of Chuck Schuldiner.
Simply put, Gene is one of the most creative and gifted drummers ever. To this day, his work on Death's Symbolic is, to me, the standard.
If darkness decends didnt exist I might be willing to say that is his best work. But darkness decends is maybe the most extreme metal album ever
Individual, and Symbolic were life changing for me.
Dethklok all the way plus his drumming in the early fear factory stuff is epic!!
The individual thought patterns work was my favorite.
Symbolic is soooooo good. My fav Death album (along with Human)

66Samus was right about the slow frame rate. Please tell me he isn't using a crApple to capture the video. Use a PC and a Nvidia GPU and have Shadowplay or OBS capture at 60FPS. I still haven't seen a crApple be able to cap vid that's worth watching.

I love it when a musician continues to grow and trying out new techniques/gear. I’m a decent self taught drummer. Over the past 30 years I’ve had to change how I play. My kit configurations have changed, the sticks I use have changed, and how I play has changed. Mostly due to chronic pain from a car accident and work injuries, but also from watching other drummers and just trying out different things for fun. I appreciate you pointing out how/why Gene’s techniques have changed over the years.
Speaking of Samus, you should totally analyze his Decrepit Birth work, he has a couple playthroughs on his channel. Great as always!
Samus is a good drummer but I hate he triggers everything. Only the kick drums should be triggered in death metal.
xendra he has said multiple times that he only triggers his stuff due to a limitation on his recording hardware and the frequency in which he puts out videos. He doesn’t have a large enough interface for running full microphones. Mixing organic drums for every video he does would take too long since he works a full time job through the week.
@@xendra8785 Check out one of his streams. I'm not a fan of triggers either but the guy would sound incredible with mic'd drums as well. He has amazing control at very fast speeds and everything in between. It is simply a limit of his recording hardware, he is an incredible drummer and is very accurate.

@@themisohashira actually he has large audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 18i20), and he has sound demo with mic'ed up kit in his "drumhead comparison" video. He said that samples sound better because they require a lot less mixing.

I'd prefer his drums at Kriegsmaschine, but sadly, they don't play live as them anymore as far as I know... opener of the new Album is outstanding, even for darkside.

The really impressive thing about Hoglan is how relaxed and non-hammering his technique is. Very similar to Dennis Chambers.
Saw Fear Factory on the Demanufacture tour. .the venue canceled their show for some reason..so they played a free show at a park next to the local college on a concrete slab..first time seeing them live ..I was completely blown away by it..

As an engineer who sometimes has to wear the "drum programming" hat, I love watching these videos so I get a better understanding of why drummers do what they do.

Another great video, Marthyn. Gene is a true giant of extreme metal…no, really, he is actually a giant. And at nearly 46-feet tall, he needs to have his kit custom-made out of pre-cast concrete piping. The bass drums alone are 14-feet across! When he recorded the album Symbolic with Death, he had to have a separate booth constructed for him out of shipping containers! Remarkable.

Gene was one of the greatest drummers of metal back in the 80's and 90's I'm glad he is still at it today and he is just as good as he was back in the day! Rock on Gene🤘

Just about every drummer that played for Chuck and Death at one time or another became or all ready was great ones. Sean and Richard were beasts behind the kit as well. All those guys were ahead if their time.

when i was a teenager i managed to get a copy of individual thought patterns from death randomly shortly after it came out. I was obsessed with it. if you saw me most likely i was listening to it.
