  • RED/BLUE (Anaglyph) 3D GLASSES REQUIRED
    The Master System had full 3D in the literal sense back in the 80s, but the glasses are complex and expensive and it only works on an SMS1 plugged into a CRT TV so most people have never seen these games as designed.
    But it is possible to use a PC to get these games running in classic red/blue 3D so here we present every commercial 3D game on the system.... including the secret one...

      Yeah, the 3DS was the chance to remake the others wasn't it.

    Thanks for making this video. I had the SMS with 3D glasses as a kid, really nice to see these old games again. It's a shame there isn't an emulator for Oculus Quest or SteamVR that lets you play these in 3D.

      Yeah, it sounds like it should be an own goal, especially when stuff like 3dVR SEN exists for NES. Maybe something the excellet emu VR should add.

    Fantastic review and really interesting as I've always wondered about the 3d on the SMS. Thanks for putting this one together ☕🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😎👌

      It's more impressive (because colours) if you can really get the thing running but it's also pretty much impossible.

    I love this. With the red/blue glasses, I notice I can't see the effect very well in dark sections, especially at the extremes. I just see double then. For instance, the rocks on the side of the road and tunnel section in Out Run and the player ship in Zaxxon. Other stuff looks absolutely brilliant (the rest of Out Run, Poseidon Wars, Missile Defense, and Line of Fire). Now I'm actually tempted to add a 3D anaglyph mode to my own games.

    • @Yesterzine
      @Yesterzine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's an imperfect effect to be sure, and it's slightly unfortunate that on a lot of displays it's the first two titles in the video that suffer most. Still, at least people are getting an idea. Through the real glasses the colours are preserved but it does have the effect everything is darker than a 2d game (or the anaglyph).
      Shame I can see to combine gun support and red/green though, I want to try missile defense and I don't currently have a useful CRT at home.

    Excellent vid again buddy. I really enjoy your Master System ones. I never had any of these or the glasses but I may just watch this back when I can be bothered to get a pair out of the loft, I know we have two pairs somewhere up there.

    • @Yesterzine
      @Yesterzine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You watched it without? Impressed. Yeah def try to grab a pair, out run and space harrier are actually less impressive than the likes of Maze Hunter and that tunnel in Zaxxon.

    "If you don't have 3D glasses, why are you here?"
    Because I'm using my N3DS web browser's video player that can emulate 3D glasses :)

    My eyes!! The goggles to nothing!! Well actually they do. Great idea for a video there!

    • @Yesterzine
      @Yesterzine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      "The goggles do the thing they're designed for!" But yeah, as someone who's had to watch quite a lot of this, it's really tiring on the eyes. I don't remember if the real ones were the same.

    I thought your extra secret game might have been "3D Gunner", considered the 1986 prototype of Missile Defense which also used both glasses and gun peripherals.
    3D Space Harrier is the definitive version. In addition to true stereoscopic 3D visuals it also has stylus control which gives you the ability to deftly weave in and out of the way of obstacles like no version before or since.
    If you ever get around to trying out the three 3D Fukkoku Archives physical compilations of the 3DS games you'll see a few of the 3D SMS games converted to boast stereoscopic visuals too.

      Ooh I will do thanks, I did ponder it was a shame Sega didn't do a proper Sega Classics compilation of the lot. You might have to leave Out Run out for licencing and Missile Defence for light gun but there's still a lot there.

    Hey, you know a lot of the 3D games had a 2D mode if you pressed the pause button on the title screen?

    • @Yesterzine
      @Yesterzine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Subsequent to the video I noticed Outrun 3D did, and also that it's literally on the cover of the thing. (In my defence at the time it was the only one I didn't own). Space Harrier too, Poseidon and Line of Fire of course.
      The others I did not, I'll have to try, if only because if missile defence does then I can at least sort of "play" it.

    Great video as always, and a really cool concept for a video! I also had no idea about the 3d mode in Line of Fire, thats a new one on me - looks really cool too! As you said, the fact this was "real" active shutter 3d, full colour and not red/blue like the 3d NES games, was pretty stunning in the 80s. It was the late 90s before you got decent active shutter for PCs.
    Minor correction, Out Run 3d CAN be played in 2d, theres a menu to choose the 2d or 3d version (press the pause button at the title screen). It still has the smaller sprites for the car, radio hand etc, so its not the same as the standalone 2d game, its literally the (inferior) 3d one, but playable without the 3d glasses. I assume the framerate improves but I've not played it in years - as I grew up playing the original Master system version over and over the fact that its the same but with different sprites messes with my head.

      Yeah you got me there, a peril of not owning that one although only now do I notice it's clearly visible in my picture I downloaded to use for the title card instead. I'm clickbaiting with the VR thing but it's how we got there.

    The glasses are also small, or at least designed for kid heads. If you've got anything like a normal adult head then it's going to hurt putting these on and worse case break them.

    • @Yesterzine
      @Yesterzine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, a big proportion of them have snapped arms for these reasons. Just another thing that makes it tricky these days. I have seen people try to get other 3d glasses working which is theoretically possible.

  • @loganjorgensen

    I compliment your video filter, the footage worked great with the glasses I have, but I imagine a decent LCD screen helps too.🙂 That's the problem with trying to review and demonstrate all such platforms, how can you let the audience experience it too. With emulators and filter development content like this isn't confined to analog anymore.
    Same here, Space Harrier, Afterburner, my depth perception of targets gets confused and more so at such a fast pace. The frame rate loss certainly doesn't enhance things but the alternative is a parallel reality where platforms ran twice as fast as ours heh.
    It has it's shortcomings but that was the easiest way to do 3D on 8-bit platforms, through the background tile map, lets you make "sprites" as big as you like and overlapping without flickering. There is a way to real-time composite two layers into one but its slower as SMS Golden Axe demonstrated, I guess they didn't want it running even more slowly heh.😉
    That's just silly if SMS emulation can't approximate a light gun, only requires mouse support and a reticule overlay, that's usually what most of the other emulators do.🤔 Speaking of Missile Defense 3D I think the single screen approach probably works the best with the frame rate compromise as the background doesn't have to move at all.
    Shame about the early D-pad cursors, a big innovation later was the speed button you could hold for a two-gear cursor.

      It's all the emulator (Dega) but it's nice to be able to give some of the experience at least. Getting a CRT AND working glasses AND hardware AND the gun in the case of missile defence is pretty tricky.

      Oh thanks, wondered which one did 3D. 🙂 Lol yeah they're not exactly up there with Zelda or Phantasy Star, Mark Cerny must have really loved 3D. Funny people bemoan CRT placement, I guess our new TV-stands did get shallower heh.@@Yesterzine

    I do own the Master System 3D glasses and I have a hard time getting the 3D effect working for me in some games. Maze Hunter 3D is the one that is most impressive for me, for others I just can't make the two images blend (I keep seeing two aim reticules all the time in Poseidon Wars 3D, for instance). But one interesting thing I noticed is that if I make the video window smaller, the effect is easier to see. That's how I got to see just one aim reticule in Poseidon Wars 3D. Maybe playing those games on a small CRT TV would be better.

    • @Yesterzine
      @Yesterzine  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I forget now if I show it in the video (I do in the recent SMSPower 2023 one) but I use a 14" CRT for when I need a CRT and the 3D works well in most stuff.

    I tried with one, two and THREE pairs of 3D glasses (red/blue) and they didnt' work. That's what you get from buying them cheap!
    Great vid though.

      Could be your screen doing some naughty processing, if you skip to zaxxon’s tunnel section that’d be the very obvious test.
