I hitchhiked from Michigan to California in the 80s. Truckers were a god send. Always gave me meals. I had less then $10 starting and at my California destination I had like $30. I was really fortunate to have been blessed by caring drivers!

Great, job ! I'm 74, with my manicurist telling me that my feet and legs are like a man in his 20s! My high school buddy & I hitched from Philly to Cleveland, Ohio Aug 1962, Philly RT to Key West, Florida and then Xmas vacation in snow storm 1962, we did Philly to L.A. in August 1963(3 days) I returned from Berkeley to Philly Sept '63 3 days, Marty went on to Canada & across the TransCanadian Hwy back in late Aug alone. In June '64 Philly to LA 4 days, solo, and from Venice, Ca to Philly Aug 1965 I only carried a dime(TEN CENTS) for an emergency telephone call (4 days). I did my hitchhiking as a teen, great adventure. Traveled the world as a young manufacturer, and night time musician percussionist. For me, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" was an inspiration! Now happy on a SE Asia beach in the Philippines! Life is what we make it! Keep on keeping on!

Haha despite everything, I still think we got pretty lucky out there. We both lived at least. One hitch hike ride was actually so long they drove us into and out the other side of a blizzard, it was wild. We knew if we had to get out of the car in the middle that things were going to get very bad for us haha
Shogun Skilling We did have a tent but we didn’t use it very much. The tent was orange and difficult to hide haha so we mostly slept out or under bridges
This makes me wish I was young and dumb again and packed a 100lbs on my back like this. Nowadays I follow the warmer weather and carry about everything in a 5 gallon bucket. So I can stop and sit anywhere and you look like a hardcore professional hitcher with the bucket.

I normally leave gear that I dont need at a friends house and then try find a way to pick it up later on, but I often just take everything with me as I only have the one bag. Hope this helps

To be 22 and "bullet proof" I turn 39 in April I'm currently in a wheelchair waiting to get 2 hip replacements, I would DREAM OF doing this WITH some one WITH EXPERIENCE

We had 60 litre packs each and two sleeping bags each as well. 1 set of clothes and a gas cooker each. Other things too but thats the main stuff

Thing is you watch too many horror movies. Real life is not like the movies. The one who is in more danger is the hitch hiker. I have done it in the past and every 3rd or 4th ride there would be some pedophile in the car.
