Thanks for these videos Blaine. It's Bank holiday Monday. Just about to plaster the remaining wall in my living room, having learnt everything from your videos. You were right - there's no substitute for just getting some plaster on the wall and giving it a go. First wall wasn't the best but I learned a lot and now I'm quite comfortable with it and looking forward to this afternoon. I've also rebuilt lath and plaster sections under bay window that were totally ruined, so I've come a long way, which is saying something for an IT consultant in her late 40s! Thanks again.

You have taught me to give plastering and rendering ago through your videos over the last year. Ive ended up doing jobs for people and decided to leave my cardiac rehabilitation job. Ive decided to book on a plastering course at the local college. Thank you for your amazing guidance in your videos

This seems particularly important for beginners or perpetual-beginners who plaster infrequently enough to forget a lot between jobs. Knowing it is an option will probably make plastering less nerve wracking for many. Thanks for making this available!

You should make a video about why cracks appear in plaster after it was done and painted. Lots of customers in the UK live life clueless and have no idea why cracks appear on a replastered walls. Straight cracks and zig zag hairline cracks. I had a customer where the plasterer plastered over an old wall which already had hundreds of hairline cracks and he didn’t use mesh tape or fiberglass or fill the cracks or anything, he just threw the plaster on top of shit wall, then few weeks later all the cracks came through, customer had no idea why when how who. So you should make a video to warn customers what to look out for when they hire a plasterer. Maybe more ppl would believe in what you say because of the size of your channel. Great video by the way 👍

We had some plastering done a few years ago and had a number of different issues with cracking. I took on the plastering after that and I'm a big fan of pre-filling and render mesh now.

The other thing I wanted to suggest to you is something I have been doing recently with the speed skims, I've been using the pole attachment to speed skim the walls I find this very effective to get a flat wall fast and saves your back bending down to the bottom of the wall. The only down fall is that the wall can only really be speed skimmed in one direction which is horizontally give it a try mate you may find it useful for another video later on down the line.
I use the refina speed skims so slightly different but should still be similar, I also found using an 800 was the most effective 😉

Do you just apply one coat of PVA here before applying pre-grit, and do you leave it to go sticky before applying the pre-grit, or straight away?

  • @liambanning3674

Watched some of your videos and tried my hand at plastering for the first time today.
Unfortunately, it didn’t go too well, but I think I know what the problems were:
    1) My plaster was far too thick in consistency, which made it very hard to work with and get flat and evenly spread.
    2) I tried to plaster when it was about 30 degrees Celsius outside, so the plaster that was already too thick in consistency was drying too quickly.
    3) I think my PVA was too weak, so a lot of it wasn’t bonded well to the wall at all.
I’ve scraped it all off and I’ll try again tomorrow. Even though today didn’t go too well, I wouldn’t of even tried if it wasn’t for your videos, so thank you 😊

I skimmed some reveals in the past and used plaster that was nearly a month out of date because I didn't want to waste it. First coat started to crack as soon as it began to take up. Binned the remainder of the bag there and then and opened a new one for the second coat. Thankfully didn't come through and still looks fine. My real nightmare scenario played out the other week when I tried skimming over wet bonding. Lots of tiny blisters came up immediately and sounded like a bowl of Rice Crispies. More annoyingly once dry I also had a couple of 2 inch diameter blisters which I only found when I rubbed the wall down. Going to cut them out and easi-fill them just to be on the safe side. Won't be skimming on wet bonding again.

What happens when you’ve over mixed the plaster in the bucket, is starts setting up in there, so you add more water and quickly try to get it on the wall, then when it’s only 10 minutes later you have to use the water and brush technique to bring it back to look less awful - and then then next day it’s cracked?
The walls were mixed but had multiple coats of SBR, and as I said, it was hardening in the bucket (and it was in date). Honestly don’t know what to do about it now

  • @truebro77
    @truebro77 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Alo - it doesn't weaken plaster at all.. First coat should be pretty much gone of by this point and if sponging you should only really be affecting top coat

Wish I had you to plaster my house it’s the same technique used as you would plaster in lime one coat I guess , my plaster made a few mistakes here & there with leaving it a rough texture in some places & then blamed the material.

when you talk about high suction or suction in general, are you talking about how well something bonds to it or are you talking about how the actual material will suck in water from the material being applied?

@@PlasteringForBeginners a lot of your videos, in particular the ones demonstrating renders and application are absolutely spot on and fair play to you for that. You know yourself that however experienced you are there are just some occasions where the background has got the better of you. Like in this tutorial for instance. You come away with more credibility if you just say " sometimes you've just got to flatten it off, walk away, hit somewhere else and go back on it later". It's just part and parcel of plastering that is. Don't be telling people to get the water sprayer on it or grab your sponge float. That is not "controversial" as you described, it is fundamentally wrong. You are taking people's money when you know its wrong. Start your videos with a picture of your level 1,2 & 3 certificates for increased credibility and if you haven't that accreditation then you ain't a tutor unfortunately.

This is a worst case scenario and actually, where’s the damage?? The wall sets nicely, the finish is bang on and the wall is finished?? And actually, if you watch the video you’ll see that the steps I take at the beginning erase any need for the last step - that’s what I say in the video.
I just feel you’re making an argument out of nothing. Ok…sponging isn’t to your taste. But can you honestly prove that it’s damaging to plaster?? Because every time I do it, the finish is solid and sound.
So where’s the issue?? Where’s the proof??

    • @warrenthornewell7679

@@PlasteringForBeginners the harm is as follows. The plaster is hydrated to a exact degree by the manufacturer. It is then mixed with the exact amount of water (as stipulated by the manufacturers instructions on the bag) to generate the exact temperature for crystallisation of the minerals. This creates "the bind" This chemical reaction causing binding, and that is known as "the set". When you squirt water on it you cool it and bring it away from the temperature it needs to be, to complete setting. Have you ever wondered why cold water and cold powder plaster generate so much heat when mixed together? Because it's designed to.....to make it work !!!!!

The guy explains it can weaken the plaster, I'm new, here to learn. He gave me options and the potentials of doing them. Genuine question, but if you're good enough to call him a cowboy, why are you watching a channel called Plastering for beginners?
I'm a beginner, have watched loads of his videos and am plastering my 1840's lath and plaster on the back of it to a standard that I'm really happy with, so he's doing something right and 115k other subscribers seem to agree. If you give me your channel, I'll happily watch your videos too. Assuming you have one..?

1st mistake is pva, if i see bare plaster i hit it with 50/50 sbr the day before... Best sealer on the market.. plus pva under pre grit makes no sense Blaine as the only thing that holds the grit on the wall is the fact it doesn't re-emulsifies.. but the pva underneath does so running the risk of it peeling...

    • @PlasteringForBeginners

I tried SBR on dried Hardwall and i didn’t overly love it but I’ll have to try again. I’ve also tried it on plaster but I dont like that if you leave it too long it makes the wall to smooth.
It felt like the plaster was slimy because it was sliding off of the smooth SBR. I’ll have to try again though…
These Pregrits are designed to be used on all surfaces and there’s such a harsh key with Hardwall and Bonding so I wouldn’t be scared of it peeling off to be honest.
I appreciate your opinion though pal. We all have our own methods and if it works then it’s all good 👍

@@lukedruggan6839 yes you could do that I’m just speaking from experience learners will get caught out quite easily I’ve been sponging for over 20 years I obviously didn’t learn that way but it all balls down to room temperature the background your going on etc when it comes to patching in with hardwall or float and set I will always skim the same day or I find using bonding better if I’m patching and skimming the following day as it holds the moisture for longer due to the cork fibres in it so when you seal it , it doesn’t suck the life out of it like hardwall does,so holds back better when sponging 👍🏻
