One thing I realised, is that when Penny gives Winter the Maiden powers, Winter is in her old uniform like at the beginning of volume 7. Since Penny didn’t see Winter in her new outfit, she saw Winter how she remembered her, which makes it even more sad. The tears just won’t stop flowing.
Winter isn't wearing a new uniform. She is wearing a back brace to help her heal from the damages she took 72 hours ago. Remember that the time that Winter got hurt in vol 7 to end of vol 8 was only 3 days. Even with Atlas tech you can't heal a broken back in that time.

@@adamhughes4387 I'd say he's about 90% dead (since he got buried under Atlas, and then drowned under the sea). He might still get back (after all, he survived his canon shot after the fight he lost before), but it would surprise me quite a lot if this happened.
@@GThe-su9kl I don't know, I feel like with Watts they showed him trapped and it felt pretty final. With Ironwood, they could've easily had Salem or Cinder kill him or somehow made it feel more like a death. It just doesn't feel like its over for him.
Penny's body probably fell in the void too. Which means that maybe a member of team RWBY will learn of her death through her body, and I'm not ready for this.

I don't think there is a body. If you go back to Episode 12, when Ambrosious makes Penny real, there is a moment where we see the new Penny through Robot Penny's eyes.. When the optical filter fluctuates... You see penny has no skeleton or organic makeup.. She is ENTIRELY made of aura.
Can we take a moment to give major props to Weiss. From right after helping Ruby with Neo, she was facing a Maiden with no Aura....and at one point was going 1v1 with her just to give Jaune time to help Penny.
And they majorly nerfed Weiss in this fight despite that, it took literally 3 hits for her aura to break but she continued to show she's a great fighter
This song should have been heard when Penny became a real girl, not after her dieing a second(and final) time. This is just CRWBY turning the red hot knife into the gaping wounds in our hearts and souls.
@@nordiques3875 I actually *strongly* disagree - the song has nothing to do with Penny “becoming a real girl”, and in fact neither did that scene, and playing the song over that scene would muddle her character arc in an irreconcilable way. The line is “be a girl who finally felt alive”, which of course *references* her gaining a flesh body but is more generally about being *treated* as human. Playing the song when she gets her body would literalize it in a way that would actually negate the whole message of her arc.
Now that my mental state is at an all time low..... time to make it worse by watching everyone's reaction to this episode and cry more than I thought was possible-
11:30 when you said "her poor dad" that one really got me. The worst thing is that he'll probably think that now he'll just have to give the last of his Aura to boot her up one last time as long as they can recover her core, but then they'll have to explain to him that there's really no way to get her back.

That'd be intensely powerful, but it could be very realistic. With Ren's newfound abilities, we're learning that it's possible for Semblances to evolve. However, what's interesting is that Ren went from masking emotions to being able to detect them. This suggests that the 'evolution' of a semblance is more like an inversion of its original purpose. Personally, I'm interested in seeing how this could effect Jaune. His current Semblance allows him to use his own massive Aura reserves to amplify someone else's, allowing them to replenish their Aura or empower their Semblance. This helps underline his selfless nature. So.... an inversion of that would theoretically be... draining his own Aura to empower *himself*. Like, he feeds his Aura into his own strength and speed, consuming it over time but granting him the ability to-at last, from his perspective-be a legitimate threat to his enemies. To Cinder, most of all. I'm imagining a scenario in future where there's a big battle, and Jaune spends all of it consuming his Aura to attack Cinder relentlessly, and he might even BEAT her, maybe force her to run, but then as the dust is settling, someone is badly injured, and he can't heal them. He spent it all attacking Cinder. They survive, but it's close, and Jaune has to come to terms with the fact that his Semblances are mutually exclusive; in order to be prepared to heal people, he can't be the one going on the attack. He has to decide what's more important to him: Protecting the ones he cares about, or destroying the person who keeps taking them away.
Well afterlife or no the Yang/Neo reunion where they end up will be interesting. Also, I’m a little disappointed no one had to fight a flying monkey in the Atlas arc.
Actually I can see Neo befriending Ruby through a realization that Ruby didn't kill Torchwick but that Cinder did. Not really full on best friends, but a "We have a common enemy and I really want to fuck them up for betraying me twice."

Winter's situation breaks my heart. Her sister and her friend both died, her mentor has fallen irredeemably, and she needs to be the bearer of bad news to Nora and Ren, Oscar/Ozpin, AND her own family. I'm assuming Ozpin, due to being the one who MADE the Vaults, has some knowledge of where Team RWBY may be and how to get them. I suspect that 'getting them' involves finding Raven Branwen, as her portals are likely easier than.... whatever other option there might be.
I mean he has the most reason to fight cinder, she killed Pyrrha, she almost killed Weiss, and then killed (or at least what he thought) all of his friends.
-Chapter 14: The Final Word After Volume 3, one would think that you’d be prepared for anything that happens, and for the most part, that was true. There were few scenes in the continuing volumes that start to crack my shell, but I was able to tolerate it and think, ‘I can deal with this.’ And then this chapter happened… RWBY quote of the chapter _“And that’s checkmate.” (Cinder)_
-Winter vs Ironwood It is interesting to hear how when Winter was talking to Ironwood, she spoke mainly about how Mantle was affected in this exchange. She had already declared in the previous chapter that she will always stand up against the people of Atlas and with her words here, she fights for them as one and the same. And her other line bring up much how some villains behave (like _Thanos),_ that they will sacrifice anyone and anything to reach their goal, _except themselves._ A true hero are the ones who would put their lives _first_ for the sake of others. It would seem that Ironwood’s true enemy wasn’t just the Grimm, Salem or his fear. It was his ego.
-Belatedly Friendship Did Clover’s medal helped Qrow’s semblance? From the looks of it, it seems as though with it, he was able to use it to reverse his own semblance through concentration. Does this mean he can actually control his semblance now? And can he be able to use it back and forth now? That would be a plus. The Ace-Ops finally showing their true feelings to each other, with Elm convincing Harriet to step down from her actions, only too late that the bomb was armed (partially thanks to Watts), and then for Vine to follow suit, sacrificing himself to save his friends (like _Spock_ in the _Star Trek II)._
-Triumph of the Fall Usurper You know when things were going into _Infinity War_ level of foreboding when everyone is losing their weapons (although it is cool to see Weiss wielding both Myrtenaster _and_ Gambol Shroud), especially Crescent Rose and Crocea Mors (damaged). Congratulations Cinder, for reestablishing the #1 spot as the most hated person in RWBY. With the knowledge she had obtained from Jinn and with aid from Neo and Watts, she managed to obtain both the Relics, mortally wound Penny, and send all of team RWBY into the void. And to cover her tracks, she disposed of both Neo and Watts once she was done with them. She managed to get almost everything she wanted. The only thing she didn’t get was the Winter Maiden’s power. Even still, she pretty much ended the lives of the main protagonists. Or at least, that’s what she thinks…
-Sacrifice of the Winter Maiden …I need a moment… (keeping it together…) It was really a worry that Penny becoming human would make her vulnerable to injury and Cinder made it a reality, capitalizing on that weakness with the same attack she used on Vernal. Not only that, but realizing that she wouldn’t make it, she had Jaune to help kill herself in order to pass the power on to Winter. Whether Jaune carried out the act himself or Penny simply took his sword to do it herself, Jaune will become really messed up when this is over. Sadly enough, Penny’s words to him mirror the same ones that Pyrrha said to him before they died (and both by Cinder’s hands). _“There’s not enough time.” (Penny)_ _“There’s no time.” (Pyrrha)_ On a lighter (yet somber) note, Penny chose to use her final moments of life to help someone else rather than being unknowingly used as a pawn in her first death. What was really heartwarming/heart-striking was their conversation, which goes back to two of their earlier conversations in the previous volume, which for many, showed that Penny, a robotic girl, acted more human than Winter, a woman who acted like a machine. But Penny never really believed that and Ren saw it himself when seeing her emotions through his semblance how conflicted she was, that she was holding in more emotions inside. So Penny’s last words, as well as the fact that Winter was the one chosen to be in Penny’s last memory, telling Winter that she was her friend, was something that will likely let Winter be free from her previous persona, as Penny entrusted her with the Maiden powers, and in some way, trusting her also to be the next protector of Mantle, as that was her previous title. And with Ironwood’s decline, she would become the de-facto leader of Atlas. _“Do you believe in destiny?” (Pyrrha)_ It also shows that she is free from the destiny that Ironwood envisioned in her (although she had already repurposed it in the earlier volume as her own). What became her destiny given to her by Ironwood became a gift given to her from Penny. Because when Penny became the Winter Maiden, Winter probably believed that her destiny was gone. But it was Penny would fulfilled it for her as a gift, thus no longer bonding her to Ironwood’s idea So Weiss isn’t Elsa; Winter is… With Weiss’ fall, Cinder has two Maidens she has to contend with that. Now only that, but Winter was already formidable on her own right. As strong as Penny was, Winter is more a battle-hardened Huntress/soldier. Her with Maiden powers will be something Cinder will have problems with. Add to that, Winter vowed to make sure Cinder pays for what she done, and she has to power to do it. One thing is for sure though… The Grimm facing her now at Vacuo are about to be wrecked…
-The Fall of Atlas/Mantle I was a bit confused at first about when did Cinder use the staff to trap Watts into a fire, but then I remembered that in using the Relic, time is frozen and Cinder wouldn’t need too much of a plan to for Ambrosius to work with in order to get what she wanted. It is likely that Salem knows that Cinder is lying about many of her actions, but she doesn’t care since she has two of the Relics now and Atlas has been destroyed. And Salem was deceiving Cinder as well, bringing up her line of creating a ‘new world order’. To bring it up to Cinder means that Cinder doesn’t really know what Salem’s real endgame is. Rule of Two… This also shows Ironwood’s complete defeat, that he had no power to do anything now. And the way Salem and Cinder were walking away from him confirmed that. As far as they are concerned, Ironwood is beneath their notice now, and he knows that. In a small way, this is a bit of revenge for Cinder as well, destroying the world that he had suffered under as a youth. To summarize, Atlas/Mantle is gone and underwater, Qrow, Robyn, and the rest of the Ace-Ops are left to see it (with Qrow unable to contact what had happened to Ruby or the others), the survivors of Atlas/Mantle are now at Vacuo with Winter as the Winter Maiden, Penny is dead (likely Ironwood and Watts as well), and team RWBY, Jaune and Neo have disappeared into the void
-End-credit Thoughts/Theory So they are all potentially still alive. After all, the RWBY standard is typically, no body, no death. Now comes the question; where are they? Wonderland? Yggdrasil (The World Tree)? The afterlife? There are thoughts to mull about. If it turns out that they are in some sort of afterlife, that will definitely be a thing. Would they encounter anyone? Will Neo encounter Torchwick? Will Weiss see her grandfather? Will Blake have to confront Adam? Will Ruby and Yang see Summer (which would confirm her death)? Will Jaune see Pyrrha? How will they be able to get out of there? When that happens, will time have changed? Thus ends Volume 8… A session of RWBY Chibi is definitely in order…
I think Salem knows Cinder's lying but respects the hustle.....she's learned well from Salem's example...."Never underestimate the usefulness of others...."; Salem now has 2 of the 4 relics, she doesn't give a damn about the details.
My theory is that the void acts as a wormhole, that they may have been transported to another world entirely judging by the terrain, it just doesn't look like Remnant SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THE EPISODE: I WARNED YOU!!! Rest In Peace Penny... Sleep Tight, and tell Pyyrah we miss her.😭
There’s something about Cinder’s parting shot at Ruby that rings off with me. “You should never have been born” is like something you say if you were in some way affected by that character’s existence, like something an out of favor or exiled family member would say. At least that’s how I see it.
I'm kinda hyped for next volume though, since it takes some amount of roots from the legend of the girl who fell through the world to end up in a new one. Time for a good old Isekai arc!
Team RAYNBW fell into the void, Penny’s purgatory was hinted in the V7 intro, I presume the location is the hinted afterlife we hear about in V6..the beach alone seemed too peaceful and surreal to be remnant, so, i presume they are either in the afterlife OR they ended up to where the gods are. They left Remnant, but we never got an answer to where they officially settled, and i think this might be where they are. They might try to convince the gods to come back and remove Salem’s curse, or come clean about them knowing everything and trying to reunite humanity, and the gods might help.. V9 is gonna be a hellscape.
I kinda hope Ruby just tears into the gods and makes it clear to them that everything that happened was ultimately their faults and they have no right to judge humanity when it was their sins that drove them to brink
I really want to see the shenanigans that will ensue just from having Neo, Jeanne, team RWBY and 20 or so random people Cinder threw just showing up in a world.
I want a timeskip for island peeps, them all in a survival Island situation and having to get the civilians through, damaged weapons and having to make do without ammo kind of thing
"The girl who fell through the world" One of the many fairy tales of Remnant. This one, as far as we know, relates to the story of Alice in Wonderland, and that is where all of them most likely ended up. Additionally, it is Neo's favorite fairy tale. Volume 9 promises to be interesting, and while there are a number of theories floating around out there, I'm reasonably confident that RWBY, Jaune, and Neo will all end up working together to escape and return home. As for my own theory on the matter; Neo will be the key to them getting home, and Jaune will be the key to Neo's redemption arc that will begin during Volume 9. I know this finale hurt to watch, but at the same time, there is a message of hope there as well. Side note: Loved the cosplays.
I'm trying to figure this out as well 22:28. *On-screen* would be Counsilman Sleet, most of the scientist at the controles of Atlas, Vine, Jacque & Penny. Most likely during the *crash and flooding of Atlas* would be Ironwood, the rest of the scientists at the controleroom that Neo knocked out and Watts. *Missing in action* are Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang, Neo, Jaune, Pietro, Maria, Flynt, Neon, Kobalt and Ivori. Never even seen that other finalist of Atlas from the Amity festival episodes in volume 3, so I think RT just forgot about that guy. Some random citizens that got blown off the platforms by Cinder fell into the void as well. In *turmoil* again would be Harriet as she's finally got past the first stage of Grief (anger) and is now crying for Clover and Vine and offcourse Qrow. Like every ending as Qrow was first lost his purpose when Oz died untill Oz came back as Oscar, was poisoned by Tyrian, was betrayed by Lionheart, Qrow again lost his purpose after finding out the truth that Salem was immortal but in the ending he did do an effort to stop drinking as Maria praised him, however lost a friend (Clover) in volume 7 right before his eyes because Ironwood ordered Clover to take in Qrow and did so in a stupid way as they should had stopped Tyrian first and now in volume 8 Qrow is in the dark what happend to Ruby and everyone. Edit: Also Winter as she lost the person that helped her escape from her father's grip, became the maiden anyways the natural way as Penny had chosesn her and saw Weiss fall and doesn't know her fate.
I'm worried Nora was on the other side of the atlas portal guiding people, when cinder disconnected them. As I did not notice her with Oscar, emerald or ren.
Just before Winter emerges into Vacuo, we see Nora on her knees as she bangs her fist against the Vacuo portal in a fruitless attempt to be allowed back through.

Welcome to the next arc, a mix of Vacuo and Wonderland so maybe we’ll get an Alice character or some character development or growth in skill for Oscar (just our boi not Ozpin) since from what I understand Oscar is supposed to a character from the original writing of the story of wonderland rather than the kid friendly version we all know and love. Also the city of Atlas is now the city of Atlantis. And with this one of the 4 kingdoms have fallen leaving Vale still being repaired presumably, and Vacuo and Menagerie at full power and Mistral missing 90% estimated of grown huntsmen forces leaving them with mostly students. Things are looking bleak.
Imagine, Jaune entered in an island with the group imagine when they all meet and then they found Penny's body--then there is the sad moment next when it was night time or like they settled in for the night Weiss, Neo, Blake and Yang fell asleep except Jaune and Ruby. Next Jaune was going to tell what happen to Penny but Ruby cuts him off and she blame it on Cinder and Jaune just went for it like why bother telling if you may think it was Cinder's fault. Now when the whole gang went to fight Cinder, Salem and etc. Cinder might tell on what happen to Penny so in result maybe Jaune and Ruby argue while Cinder just smile in amusement! Also since Jaune's sword is gone what happens if he has the sword of destruction? Next Ruby learning how to use her silver eyes...
So a question: When Ironwood says to Winter "so the destiny I chose for you has arrived" - how did he know she was now the maiden? He then looks shocked as she reveals her power. Or was he referring to something else?
Considering how insistent Winter was on it being her choice to become the Winter Maiden back in Season 7, I fully believe that the only reason Ironwood said that was to set up for Winter's rebuttal about it being a gift.
See...at least these two bumble bee cosplayers are smart enough to know that their ship isn't dead. I can't believe people had a hissy fit over the episode 13 when Yang's "fall" scene looked just as fake as Wiess's "death" scene in volume 5. Idiots on Twitter really thought that this show was burying it's gays. If anything it's burying it's straights cuz I still feel bad for muh boiz Juane and Sun.
But Winter already pulled her second blade in the last... they already frelled continuity in the subway, this time there wasn't even a joke for an excuse. Not a promising start. No, Qrow, don't stab your blade into the floor to stop the bomb sliding. Winter must assume her father's dead, if not how. Cinder uses her head for the first time since Beacon, and it pays off; but I don't know if she can deceive Salem. Kinda done with the ace ops at this point, perhaps Qrow's group will find Amity in the next volume? Penny's damn martyr complex. She gets to be human for, what, ten minutes? What was the point of it all if Winter was going to get the power anyway? Let me guess: even more Jaune angst! I'm on the fence about Pyrrha escaping when Beacon tower fell instead of continuing the fight, but Weiss could have *not* been robbed of her agency at Haven just so Jaune could unlock his semblance. Now, Penny is dead, for good this time, and... when Yang fell, I hoped the rest of the team would follow so we'd finally return the focus to the main characters... and then Jaune falls too. I hope he burns in the next volume, probably to get them out of wherever they are, because at this point, I've had enough of him. And Cinder gets the staff anyway, so the sacrifice... bleh. Soundtrack notwithstanding, the most disappointing volume finale. Who wants to bet Fox dies in Vacuo? There's a redhead still standing!

I really think Ruby should have been the one to mercy kill Penny. Given their history it would have been so much more impactful plus it would finally have given Ruby some depth, having her do something she had previously refused for the greater good and honouring her friend's wishes. Can we please stop giving Jaune all of the main character moments, did he really need to be the last one to fall?
they should have killed Neo instead. she's been a massive tool throughout the entire RWBY franchise, just to push Cinder's plot. but at least Penny's out of the picture. never liked the whole Pinocchio storyline.

I don't think there is a body. If you go back to Episode 12, when Ambrosious makes Penny real, there is a moment where we see the new Penny through Robot Penny's eyes.. When the optical filter fluctuates... You see penny has no skeleton or organic makeup.. She is ENTIRELY made of aura.
Can we take a moment to give major props to Weiss. From right after helping Ruby with Neo, she was facing a Maiden with no Aura....and at one point was going 1v1 with her just to give Jaune time to help Penny.
She did better auraless against Cinder than Winter did!
And they majorly nerfed Weiss in this fight despite that, it took literally 3 hits for her aura to break but she continued to show she's a great fighter

@@nordiques3875 I actually *strongly* disagree - the song has nothing to do with Penny “becoming a real girl”, and in fact neither did that scene, and playing the song over that scene would muddle her character arc in an irreconcilable way. The line is “be a girl who finally felt alive”, which of course *references* her gaining a flesh body but is more generally about being *treated* as human. Playing the song when she gets her body would literalize it in a way that would actually negate the whole message of her arc.

The worst thing is that he'll probably think that now he'll just have to give the last of his Aura to boot her up one last time as long as they can recover her core, but then they'll have to explain to him that there's really no way to get her back.

I wonder if that bit with the badge and the bomb suggests Qrow has, or maybe will down the line, evolve his semblance through the experiences he had with Clover, to the point that it actually goes from bad luck to full-on luck manipulation...
That'd be intensely powerful, but it could be very realistic. With Ren's newfound abilities, we're learning that it's possible for Semblances to evolve. However, what's interesting is that Ren went from masking emotions to being able to detect them. This suggests that the 'evolution' of a semblance is more like an inversion of its original purpose.
Personally, I'm interested in seeing how this could effect Jaune. His current Semblance allows him to use his own massive Aura reserves to amplify someone else's, allowing them to replenish their Aura or empower their Semblance. This helps underline his selfless nature.
So.... an inversion of that would theoretically be... draining his own Aura to empower *himself*. Like, he feeds his Aura into his own strength and speed, consuming it over time but granting him the ability to-at last, from his perspective-be a legitimate threat to his enemies. To Cinder, most of all.
I'm imagining a scenario in future where there's a big battle, and Jaune spends all of it consuming his Aura to attack Cinder relentlessly, and he might even BEAT her, maybe force her to run, but then as the dust is settling, someone is badly injured, and he can't heal them. He spent it all attacking Cinder. They survive, but it's close, and Jaune has to come to terms with the fact that his Semblances are mutually exclusive; in order to be prepared to heal people, he can't be the one going on the attack. He has to decide what's more important to him:
Protecting the ones he cares about, or destroying the person who keeps taking them away.
Cue the "Jaune and his Beach Harem" jokes.

Actually I can see Neo befriending Ruby through a realization that Ruby didn't kill Torchwick but that Cinder did. Not really full on best friends, but a "We have a common enemy and I really want to fuck them up for betraying me twice."
But Cinder did not kill Roman... If anything, her machinations helped free Torchwick. Everything else is between Roman + Ruby.

Her sister and her friend both died, her mentor has fallen irredeemably, and she needs to be the bearer of bad news to Nora and Ren, Oscar/Ozpin, AND her own family.
I'm assuming Ozpin, due to being the one who MADE the Vaults, has some knowledge of where Team RWBY may be and how to get them. I suspect that 'getting them' involves finding Raven Branwen, as her portals are likely easier than.... whatever other option there might be.

After Volume 3, one would think that you’d be prepared for anything that happens, and for the most part, that was true. There were few scenes in the continuing volumes that start to crack my shell, but I was able to tolerate it and think, ‘I can deal with this.’

It is interesting to hear how when Winter was talking to Ironwood, she spoke mainly about how Mantle was affected in this exchange. She had already declared in the previous chapter that she will always stand up against the people of Atlas and with her words here, she fights for them as one and the same. And her other line bring up much how some villains behave (like _Thanos),_ that they will sacrifice anyone and anything to reach their goal, _except themselves._ A true hero are the ones who would put their lives _first_ for the sake of others. It would seem that Ironwood’s true enemy wasn’t just the Grimm, Salem or his fear.
It was his ego.
-Belatedly Friendship
Did Clover’s medal helped Qrow’s semblance? From the looks of it, it seems as though with it, he was able to use it to reverse his own semblance through concentration. Does this mean he can actually control his semblance now? And can he be able to use it back and forth now? That would be a plus.
The Ace-Ops finally showing their true feelings to each other, with Elm convincing Harriet to step down from her actions, only too late that the bomb was armed (partially thanks to Watts), and then for Vine to follow suit, sacrificing himself to save his friends (like _Spock_ in the _Star Trek II)._

You know when things were going into _Infinity War_ level of foreboding when everyone is losing their weapons (although it is cool to see Weiss wielding both Myrtenaster _and_ Gambol Shroud), especially Crescent Rose and Crocea Mors (damaged).
Congratulations Cinder, for reestablishing the #1 spot as the most hated person in RWBY. With the knowledge she had obtained from Jinn and with aid from Neo and Watts, she managed to obtain both the Relics, mortally wound Penny, and send all of team RWBY into the void. And to cover her tracks, she disposed of both Neo and Watts once she was done with them. She managed to get almost everything she wanted. The only thing she didn’t get was the Winter Maiden’s power. Even still, she pretty much ended the lives of the main protagonists.
Or at least, that’s what she thinks…

It was really a worry that Penny becoming human would make her vulnerable to injury and Cinder made it a reality, capitalizing on that weakness with the same attack she used on Vernal. Not only that, but realizing that she wouldn’t make it, she had Jaune to help kill herself in order to pass the power on to Winter. Whether Jaune carried out the act himself or Penny simply took his sword to do it herself, Jaune will become really messed up when this is over. Sadly enough, Penny’s words to him mirror the same ones that Pyrrha said to him before they died (and both by Cinder’s hands).

On a lighter (yet somber) note, Penny chose to use her final moments of life to help someone else rather than being unknowingly used as a pawn in her first death. What was really heartwarming/heart-striking was their conversation, which goes back to two of their earlier conversations in the previous volume, which for many, showed that Penny, a robotic girl, acted more human than Winter, a woman who acted like a machine.
But Penny never really believed that and Ren saw it himself when seeing her emotions through his semblance how conflicted she was, that she was holding in more emotions inside. So Penny’s last words, as well as the fact that Winter was the one chosen to be in Penny’s last memory, telling Winter that she was her friend, was something that will likely let Winter be free from her previous persona, as Penny entrusted her with the Maiden powers, and in some way, trusting her also to be the next protector of Mantle, as that was her previous title. And with Ironwood’s decline, she would become the de-facto leader of Atlas.

It also shows that she is free from the destiny that Ironwood envisioned in her (although she had already repurposed it in the earlier volume as her own). What became her destiny given to her by Ironwood became a gift given to her from Penny. Because when Penny became the Winter Maiden, Winter probably believed that her destiny was gone. But it was Penny would fulfilled it for her as a gift, thus no longer bonding her to Ironwood’s idea
So Weiss isn’t Elsa; Winter is…
With Weiss’ fall, Cinder has two Maidens she has to contend with that. Now only that, but Winter was already formidable on her own right. As strong as Penny was, Winter is more a battle-hardened Huntress/soldier. Her with Maiden powers will be something Cinder will have problems with. Add to that, Winter vowed to make sure Cinder pays for what she done, and she has to power to do it. One thing is for sure though…
The Grimm facing her now at Vacuo are about to be wrecked…
-The Fall of Atlas/Mantle
I was a bit confused at first about when did Cinder use the staff to trap Watts into a fire, but then I remembered that in using the Relic, time is frozen and Cinder wouldn’t need too much of a plan to for Ambrosius to work with in order to get what she wanted.
It is likely that Salem knows that Cinder is lying about many of her actions, but she doesn’t care since she has two of the Relics now and Atlas has been destroyed. And Salem was deceiving Cinder as well, bringing up her line of creating a ‘new world order’. To bring it up to Cinder means that Cinder doesn’t really know what Salem’s real endgame is.
Rule of Two…
This also shows Ironwood’s complete defeat, that he had no power to do anything now. And the way Salem and Cinder were walking away from him confirmed that. As far as they are concerned, Ironwood is beneath their notice now, and he knows that. In a small way, this is a bit of revenge for Cinder as well, destroying the world that he had suffered under as a youth.
To summarize, Atlas/Mantle is gone and underwater, Qrow, Robyn, and the rest of the Ace-Ops are left to see it (with Qrow unable to contact what had happened to Ruby or the others), the survivors of Atlas/Mantle are now at Vacuo with Winter as the Winter Maiden, Penny is dead (likely Ironwood and Watts as well), and team RWBY, Jaune and Neo have disappeared into the void
-End-credit Thoughts/Theory
So they are all potentially still alive. After all, the RWBY standard is typically, no body, no death. Now comes the question; where are they? Wonderland? Yggdrasil (The World Tree)? The afterlife? There are thoughts to mull about.
If it turns out that they are in some sort of afterlife, that will definitely be a thing. Would they encounter anyone? Will Neo encounter Torchwick? Will Weiss see her grandfather? Will Blake have to confront Adam? Will Ruby and Yang see Summer (which would confirm her death)? Will Jaune see Pyrrha? How will they be able to get out of there? When that happens, will time have changed?
Thus ends Volume 8…

There’s something about Cinder’s parting shot at Ruby that rings off with me. “You should never have been born” is like something you say if you were in some way affected by that character’s existence, like something an out of favor or exiled family member would say. At least that’s how I see it.
I'm kinda hyped for next volume though, since it takes some amount of roots from the legend of the girl who fell through the world to end up in a new one. Time for a good old Isekai arc!

Team RAYNBW fell into the void, Penny’s purgatory was hinted in the V7 intro, I presume the location is the hinted afterlife we hear about in V6..the beach alone seemed too peaceful and surreal to be remnant, so, i presume they are either in the afterlife OR they ended up to where the gods are. They left Remnant, but we never got an answer to where they officially settled, and i think this might be where they are. They might try to convince the gods to come back and remove Salem’s curse, or come clean about them knowing everything and trying to reunite humanity, and the gods might help.. V9 is gonna be a hellscape.
I kinda hope Ruby just tears into the gods and makes it clear to them that everything that happened was ultimately their faults and they have no right to judge humanity when it was their sins that drove them to brink

One of the many fairy tales of Remnant.
This one, as far as we know, relates to the story of Alice in Wonderland, and that is where all of them most likely ended up. Additionally, it is Neo's favorite fairy tale.
Volume 9 promises to be interesting, and while there are a number of theories floating around out there, I'm reasonably confident that RWBY, Jaune, and Neo will all end up working together to escape and return home.
As for my own theory on the matter; Neo will be the key to them getting home, and Jaune will be the key to Neo's redemption arc that will begin during Volume 9.
I know this finale hurt to watch, but at the same time, there is a message of hope there as well.

Welp.... from Atlas to Atlantis
I'm trying to figure this out as well 22:28.
*On-screen* would be Counsilman Sleet, most of the scientist at the controles of Atlas, Vine, Jacque & Penny. Most likely during the *crash and flooding of Atlas* would be Ironwood, the rest of the scientists at the controleroom that Neo knocked out and Watts.
*Missing in action* are Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang, Neo, Jaune, Pietro, Maria, Flynt, Neon, Kobalt and Ivori. Never even seen that other finalist of Atlas from the Amity festival episodes in volume 3, so I think RT just forgot about that guy. Some random citizens that got blown off the platforms by Cinder fell into the void as well.
In *turmoil* again would be Harriet as she's finally got past the first stage of Grief (anger) and is now crying for Clover and Vine and offcourse Qrow. Like every ending as Qrow was first lost his purpose when Oz died untill Oz came back as Oscar, was poisoned by Tyrian, was betrayed by Lionheart, Qrow again lost his purpose after finding out the truth that Salem was immortal but in the ending he did do an effort to stop drinking as Maria praised him, however lost a friend (Clover) in volume 7 right before his eyes because Ironwood ordered Clover to take in Qrow and did so in a stupid way as they should had stopped Tyrian first and now in volume 8 Qrow is in the dark what happend to Ruby and everyone.
Edit: Also Winter as she lost the person that helped her escape from her father's grip, became the maiden anyways the natural way as Penny had chosesn her and saw Weiss fall and doesn't know her fate.
I'm worried Nora was on the other side of the atlas portal guiding people, when cinder disconnected them. As I did not notice her with Oscar, emerald or ren.
Just before Winter emerges into Vacuo, we see Nora on her knees as she bangs her fist against the Vacuo portal in a fruitless attempt to be allowed back through.

Welcome to the next arc, a mix of Vacuo and Wonderland so maybe we’ll get an Alice character or some character development or growth in skill for Oscar
(just our boi not Ozpin) since from what I understand Oscar is supposed to a character from the original writing of the story of wonderland rather than the kid friendly version we all know and love. Also the city of Atlas is now the city of Atlantis. And with this one of the 4 kingdoms have fallen leaving Vale still being repaired presumably, and Vacuo and Menagerie at full power and Mistral missing 90% estimated of grown huntsmen forces leaving them with mostly students. Things are looking bleak.
The ending song generated more tears than the entire volume..
My favorite finale probably since vol 5. I wish we got to see more long drawn out fights, but there were so many this episode it’s hard to fit them in

Imagine, Jaune entered in an island with the group imagine when they all meet and then they found Penny's body--then there is the sad moment next when it was night time or like they settled in for the night Weiss, Neo, Blake and Yang fell asleep except Jaune and Ruby. Next Jaune was going to tell what happen to Penny but Ruby cuts him off and she blame it on Cinder and Jaune just went for it like why bother telling if you may think it was Cinder's fault. Now when the whole gang went to fight Cinder, Salem and etc. Cinder might tell on what happen to Penny so in result maybe Jaune and Ruby argue while Cinder just smile in amusement! Also since Jaune's sword is gone what happens if he has the sword of destruction? Next Ruby learning how to use her silver eyes...
Blake is the only one fast enough to go toe-to-toe with Neo. Time-dilated Blake (courtesy of Weiss) could actually BEAT Neo.

Considering how insistent Winter was on it being her choice to become the Winter Maiden back in Season 7, I fully believe that the only reason Ironwood said that was to set up for Winter's rebuttal about it being a gift.

No, Qrow, don't stab your blade into the floor to stop the bomb sliding. Winter must assume her father's dead, if not how. Cinder uses her head for the first time since Beacon, and it pays off; but I don't know if she can deceive Salem. Kinda done with the ace ops at this point, perhaps Qrow's group will find Amity in the next volume?
Penny's damn martyr complex. She gets to be human for, what, ten minutes? What was the point of it all if Winter was going to get the power anyway? Let me guess: even more Jaune angst! I'm on the fence about Pyrrha escaping when Beacon tower fell instead of continuing the fight, but Weiss could have *not* been robbed of her agency at Haven just so Jaune could unlock his semblance. Now, Penny is dead, for good this time, and... when Yang fell, I hoped the rest of the team would follow so we'd finally return the focus to the main characters... and then Jaune falls too. I hope he burns in the next volume, probably to get them out of wherever they are, because at this point, I've had enough of him. And Cinder gets the staff anyway, so the sacrifice... bleh. Soundtrack notwithstanding, the most disappointing volume finale.

I really think Ruby should have been the one to mercy kill Penny. Given their history it would have been so much more impactful plus it would finally have given Ruby some depth, having her do something she had previously refused for the greater good and honouring her friend's wishes.
Can we please stop giving Jaune all of the main character moments, did he really need to be the last one to fall?
they should have killed Neo instead. she's been a massive tool throughout the entire RWBY franchise, just to push Cinder's plot. but at least Penny's out of the picture. never liked the whole Pinocchio storyline.
