David Hurwitz - Joly Braga Santos 3th Symphony: : • Review: Joly Braga San...
This is a dramatic, invigorating symphony, emotionally uplifting, melodically inspired, and beautifully constructed and orchestrated. And his occasional inclusions of phrases of two (other) of my favorite composers - Shostakovich and Vaughan Williams - are just fine with me; it certainly doesn't effect his basic originality. Now that I think of it, the passage here at 18:30 is more a tribute to than a direct quote of the Shostakovich Fifth.
16.20. Vaughan Williams London and Pastoral Symphonies have had an influence on the Symphony as well other composers.
This is such an awesome symphony. Apparently the composer for Galaxy Quest thought so too, cause he totally “ borrowed” the theme in the last movement for the Galaxy Quest main theme, lol
I wonder if Santos and Copland knew each other. The start of the Lento movement feels like something Copland could have written
You can sense some Hindemith influence as well. Deserves to be better known.
