I believe St. Gregory of Nyssa was the first person in recorded history to oppose slavery on moral grounds.

One can find opposition to slavery in the Persian Empire and Zoroastrianism. Zeno the founder of the Stoics also opposed slavery. Many others can be named. Also, Fr. Stephen only talked about one form of slavery in the OT. There is also taking of captives and buying and selling of slaves in the OT that was not mentioned. Also see the book "Did the Old Testament Endorse Slavery?" by Hebrew scholar Dr. Joshua Bowen

The idea of indentured servitude still exists in the trope where some fictional character eats in a restaurant but then can't pay their bill, so they are shown washing dishes. This is like the ancient debt slavery referred to in the bible, but no one ever gets offended by the trope for some reason.

Modern people worry more about words than the concepts behind them.

3:00 I prefer to think of hypocrisy as holding others to a standard that I do not live up to myself, not simply failing to achieve to a higher standard.

But Christ did said to free the slaves, and abolished slavery, when He said: "do to others as you would have them do to you!"
