I have used Zircote a few times. Most of what I had was a far different color. Mine was more of a dark brown with darker brown streaks/stripes running through it. Not sure if I have turned it or not, but I do have some box blank stuff that I will process eventually. For the kind of tear out you had, I always shear scrape that. That did leave me the cleanest surface.
Mike, I just wish I could get my skews that sharp. I’m using a 40/40 grind on my negative rake. I’ve got to practice more on honing the burr. Great work Tomislav!
Zircote is a real challenge! I have started only using it for finials, inlays and pens... I have trashed some beautiful blanks ... you did a great job with that one!
What a beautiful box. I really enjoy how you explain what and why you are doing. Just a simple quick hone or rechange a burr makes all the difference. Thanks for the videos Tomislav. 😊👍
Absolutely stunning piece of work Sir! And such a great video, so much technique, a lot of information to learn, loved it. But that darn skew chisel, I tried the peeling but it digs in and catches... I think I'll flatten the edge and make a scraper out of the bloody thing.
Agreed. Ziricote, in my experience doesn't have a reddish hue. Deep brown, with streaks of black. Also turns without too much difficulty. Another vote for katalox. Great box and great video, nonetheless
Beautifully explained during the process of making the box on which tool and why you use it. Finished with a fabulous box. Have you managed to get the extractor stop/start switch moved yet?
99% positivesthat is katalox. I also find it doesn't like traditional skew techniques and the low paring/scrape to work well with it. In fact as you also showed, it loves the scraper. Great job Tom, showing a bix doesn't need to busy, just some subtle details, and let the wood do the rest.
You are correct, I made mistake as I was looking with client the katalox and ziricote and I have mixed those two. Never before worked with it so I don't have anything to compare it😀
Very interesting seeing you sign your work while it was still on the lathe. That appears to be a skill unto itself, and I would be very interested in learning more how you do that and the type of woodburning pen that you’re using. In my experience it has been difficult for me to use the woodburning pen to sign work in script or block letters. Adjusting the temperature and following the grain are some of my problems. Perhaps having a very hard wood helps. Would really like your thoughts and a video on how you sign your work. Thanks for all the wonderful and frequent videos. Your new shop seems great.
What an absolute pleasure to watch you work man! That perfect fitting lid was so pleasing on the brain!! You are truly my inspiration thanks for the great video and already looking forward to the next one!
I saw you have difficulty to turn the interior of the box with your scraper and you remove the burnisher burr for a grind burr and it's help a lot. Do you think if you put a negative angle on yours scraper could help?
Its not irritation,it just darkens the skin, its normal stuff as we used to work back when I learn my trade with a lot of white oak and all the woodworkers were having black hands, but only in summer. Trick to get it off completely is to just squizze lemon in water and wash hands with that.
I'm curious about the Tung oil you are using. In the US there are many finishes labeled Tung oil that may have little or no actual Tung oil. I finally found some real Tung oil and it makes a great finish but takes weeks to dry
I'm using pure Tung oil with citrus solvent, both are natural and food safe, ofcourse you don't drink this stuff but after drying its safe. Products labeled as tung oil finish are usually blend of oil, varnish and solvent and usually have very little oil and varnish and a lot of solvent
A splendid video showing multiple techniques on how to learn to work an unfamilar wood. A lovely result. Many thanks for another entertaining and educational video.
I wish I could have you as a mentor. The way you handle tools is an art of its own . Great demo and beautiful wood.
Thank you very much 🤗
Thank you so much for sharing. This box turned out great and I really appreciate you sharing your approach.
Thank you sir☺️

Reducing the flange length with the skew bevel was a good illustration that a skew has 4 sides that require sharpening!

Thank you Mike, indeed, skew is so versitile

It's beautiful piece. It looks like katalox to me. AKA Mexican ebony.
What a beautiful box. I really enjoy how you explain what and why you are doing. Just a simple quick hone or rechange a burr makes all the difference.
Thanks for the videos Tomislav. 😊👍
Very nice box. Thanks for sharing your techniques. Keep up the amazing work. 👽
L haven't been able to do any turning yet but have carved some very hard woods birch, walnut and elm for some examples

Great video. You always manage to teach me something! Love your work.
Love the box. Amazing to see how efficient the dust collector is.
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you. You’re an amazing turner!
Thank you sir
When are you coming to the States to come teach us hands on😅? Im sure youd sell out every single class you could setup!
Thank you buddy, I hope one day to visit and teach, I'll be honored.
Very nice, I like the step by step as you turn the piece.
I am 99% certain that is not ziricote (Cordia dodecandra) and 95% certain it is katalox (Swartzia cubensis)
Agreed. Ziricote, in my experience doesn't have a reddish hue. Deep brown, with streaks of black. Also turns without too much difficulty. Another vote for katalox.
Great box and great video, nonetheless
You are right, I did mistaken the two when I order these with client, mistakes happen and I never saw either woods before so I could not compare it
Love your explanations of what your doing. It’s beautiful from north Idaho USA
Another great video, thank you
Beautiful work as always.
Simple, but elegant!
Beautifully explained during the process of making the box on which tool and why you use it. Finished with a fabulous box.
Have you managed to get the extractor stop/start switch moved yet?
Ohh yes I have, you'll see it in new video today
Beautiful box! Always enjoy watching a true master at work ….. learn something new with each video 🤠🇨🇱
Thank you Randy very much 😀

Nice to see you back in business 🙂
Very educational and professionall, thank you for this video,
i`m going to apply, what i saw!

I'll do a video on that sir quite soon ☺️
Beautiful piece of wood and beautiful turning. What happened to your Harvey lathe?
Its still here, I'm waiting on the parts to replace the bearings 😀
What an absolute pleasure to watch you work man! That perfect fitting lid was so pleasing on the brain!! You are truly my inspiration thanks for the great video and already looking forward to the next one!
Thank you very much
I saw you have difficulty to turn the interior of the box with your scraper and you remove the burnisher burr for a grind burr and it's help a lot. Do you think if you put a negative angle on yours scraper could help?
No , not much and also I find that with negative rake I can't really get the corner I want
You used impressive patience with difficult timber! Nicely done. Great fit on the lid as well.
Thank you Richard ☺️
Are the tannins irritaing to your skin or painful? I see the darkening of your skin.
Its not irritation,it just darkens the skin, its normal stuff as we used to work back when I learn my trade with a lot of white oak and all the woodworkers were having black hands, but only in summer.
Trick to get it off completely is to just squizze lemon in water and wash hands with that.
Excellent demonstration - step-by-step approach showing the technique required for a box 😀
It’s great to see you working in your new shop. The lighting is great. Are you getting comfortable? Thanks for the videos
Love watching your videos. Very informative and helpful. Thanks
I'm curious about the Tung oil you are using. In the US there are many finishes labeled Tung oil that may have little or no actual Tung oil. I finally found some real Tung oil and it makes a great finish but takes weeks to dry
Its raw tuna oil....so 100% pure TO.
I'm using pure Tung oil with citrus solvent, both are natural and food safe, ofcourse you don't drink this stuff but after drying its safe.
Products labeled as tung oil finish are usually blend of oil, varnish and solvent and usually have very little oil and varnish and a lot of solvent
Not using the Harvey?
Thought I'll switch a bit 😀
That is some beautiful wood. Fantastic box, and you made that lid fit perfectly. You are very skilled with those skew's.
Where can I order a set of shark jaws like the ones you are using here?
Shark jaws are made by Vicmarc and only fit their chucks.
These are from Vicmark, best woodturning chucks out there but I they only fit on there own platform
Beautiful piece Tomislav. Very helpful seeing how you determined the best way to get good results without tearout.
Good to have you back on the lathe
Gorgeous box, and really helpful tips as you adapted the tools and cuts to the wood. Thank you as always
Thank you Rachel ☺️
Another great demo Tomislav, thank you.
I love the way you hollow your work. I am going to have to learn how to do it. From USA.
Love watching you work your skill level is miles above mine
Its just practice, I still have to learn a lot but I enjoy the journey
Great video thanks for the lesson
Fantastic work as always!
A splendid video showing multiple techniques on how to learn to work an unfamilar wood. A lovely result. Many thanks for another entertaining and educational video.
Thank you Joris
Just a beautiful box
Lovely box Tomislav
Beautiful! Why do you not use bowl gouge when hollowing out the middle of the box? Thanks for the skew lessons.
I'm just used to use scrapers and its easier for me
Beautiful piece 😊
This is a lovely box.
I’m curious why you put wax over oil ,without the oil drying
It helps when melting the wax through friction.
Cool - is the Harvey now being repaired?
No ,not yet, parts are being prepared so soon I'll do a video on replacing bearings and we shall see if there is a differents
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning that will be interesting to watch.
