I was just about to start building another microwave based spot welder but updated with a microcontroller. The one I made ten years ago was loaned out and never came back. I had no idea that economical units were available until I found your video. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us.

Awesome! Thanks so much. I bought a cheap spot welder DIY board from AliExpress and it's blew the MOSFET(s) in 30min of use. Rethinking my purchase options and this video really helps.

With respect, the Kerpu that failed . . . to be fair, it would be a better test if you used it with it's own original probes. Your hand-probe unit may be adding some resistance and reducing the current.

That lead acid battery you have connected to the Kweld spot welder - what is its capacity? I assume it is a CCA battery but curious as to the size/capacity.

Keep in mind, too, that with these types of spot welders, too much pressure on the leads will lead to less resistance and poor welds.
When I first got mine, I made that mistake and struggled very badly to weld no matter the material.
Once I figured that out (use light pressure! the lighter the better) my spot welder worked almost flawlessly and the welds were good enough to destroy cells trying to remove them. The key is to make sure the strips and the cell are flat and seat together well, and use light pressure on the leads.

I currently have a MOT spot welder that has an Arduino controller with configurable double pulse timing. I built my bike's battery pack which is 10S13P. Problem is that I lost at least 2 of the 130 cells as it sometimes blows a hole in the cell. I now I recently tried to build a drill battery and it either they just weren't sticking and if I don't push super hard on the contactors, it blows a hole in the cell. Since I rarely use it, I am wondering if the Capacitor welder would be a good replacement.

Try a firm push, then backoff to gentle, then activate... supposedly, less pressure = better result due to more resistance at the contact point.

A very very good video have to say. I've been making my own microwave transformer welder for a whlie now but can't find the motivation to finish it. Especially as it's AC and with 50Hz power I don't have much control over the pulse length. The triac stuff got overwhelming real fast.

Has the pen style handheld unit raised in price? Its not the 20$ unit you mentioned and its now $60, maybe because of this video. Are you able to link a similar quality unit please?

Are you really push a little more or just put the electrodes above?

    • @marcfruchtman9473
      @marcfruchtman9473 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Supposedly, you push down, then back off a little then activate... too much pressure reduces the effectiveness because it allows too much contact area, which decreases the contact resistance at the plates, and therefore less heat generated. (This info is just from what I have read/seen in vids, not from actual experience).

Very good video. Unfortunately I seen it way too late haha and bought AwithZ welder and some other lookalike noname lol.
My initial interest in battery building was actually restore and repair of my old DeWalt power tool batteries where either contact strips been broken off by impact from tool and battery falling from altitude enough to break them, or rusted strips or "blown" cells.

Here from the music version, GREAT video!!!!!
Was the AwithZ losing all of its energy by arcing between the too-close electrodes? (still watching, sorry if you figure it out later in the vid)

One or two bad cells in my 20V battery pack. It's junk and $200 to replace. Why just not one or two cell replacement??

You should be using "sliced" tabbing wire since you want the welding current to go into the battery terminal. Not just thru the tabbing wire itself.

Does this count as your 3k vid?
If so I'd like to put my name in the running for favorite comment. 50/50 at this point, lol
No sob stories today but for some context, haven't been able to work for like 5 years now, can't ride my Katana cause of the weight which spurred my interest in ebikes, long story short that interest evolved into a desire to build my own (for cost efficiency), and eventually a pretty strong desire to start a non-profit for low cost, 3d printed, ebikes to provide low-income individuals to commute, etc. only problem is I have no idea where to start. Been fiddling around with 3d printing design and accidentally came up with a possible sturdy, low-cost frame (or the beginnings of one) while working on another project. Anyways I found you guys a few days ago and have been binging your stuff to learn a bit about battery building among other things. Just wanted to say the stuff you're churning out is real helpful and would love to see a course on how to build something from ground up. I did watch your video mentioning courses, but I don't think I'd be a major help on telling you what that should consist of. Regardless. Thanks for doing what you're doing. Hope everyone over there has a good day.

Yea, so much better without the music.
Overall, very good review of the different brands.
I am not sure that the Capacitor version will "charge" any faster with a larger capacity charger... mostly because it would require that the unit be capable of negotiating the charge rate with the charger. In other words, typically, larger (non-usb) chargers don't have that ability... and they just supply the amount of current that the device requires. So, a lot will depend on that capacitor device, and whether or not it negotiates for power with the charger or not.
