  • @mirabilos
    @mirabilos ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Huh. What’s the price you paid for that? At least you got smarties (which Vanessa @FraserGartshore would love) for it.
    They seem to be using horizontal note spacing for rhythmic indication. Not nice, very confusing to a musician, but again little kids might just intuitively make it work, especially if they ever heard the tune, and maybe that’s why there’s those videos… still a minus, but the fingering coding is nicely done.
    (I *would* love to see you reviewing an English cross-fingering Ocarina. I bought a four-hole one for my nephew as it has less holes ⇒ less chance for nōn-note pitches, and a six-hole one myself to learn it and maybe teach, and I’ve shown it to others, who’ve also found it interesting, and it’s a bargain.)
    2:41 where Sarah used baroque F on german recorder out of habit
    2:43 where she had quietly noticed it and corrected it ☻
    Yeah, it’s annoying. I spent so much time on german fingering and now use baroque that I often confuse the two or am unsure about the fingering to use…

  • @annieoakley3516

    I recently bought, as a joke, a Woodnote acid-green plastic recorder for 5€. Ugly as sin, not the purest sound in the world, a bit shrill, but quite fair. Three parts, perfectly tuned baroque fingering and an even span of 2 full octaves. I ended up quite enjoying it.😂

    • @honeychurchgipsy6
      @honeychurchgipsy6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @anniehelman3516 - I have a Woodnote alto (black and looks quite smart) that I bought at a music festival years ago for less than a tenner. I liked it because the finger stretch was less than on most altos so I could play it more easily. Like your soprano the tuning isn't bad. I tried improving the sound by roughing up the inner bore with some sand paper (it now has a more complex/interesting sound in the lower octave but the higher notes are harder to play and quite breathy, so, swings and roundabouts) This was a tip from an old recorder forum I used to belong to, and since the instrument cost so little I thought I'd have a go.

      @@annieoakley3516 - I actually played it after leaving the comment and it sounds pretty good. I like playing around with cheapy recorders - covering the window with tape mutes a loud/shrill soprano and placing something (I use a plastic note marker, but a tiny straw is fun too) into the mouthpiece makes it sound more breathy: make sure you can get it out though!!

  • @mandolinic
    @mandolinic ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's not brilliant, but if it gets just a few children into playing music then that's great. Hopefully their parents will get them a better recorder (which is not an overly expensive instrument) before too long. BTW, I did wonder if the muted and breathy tone was designed to save parents' ears!

    My wife got me a German fingering soprano as a gift without knowing any difference, and after having spent my first several months learning Baroque fingerings, I found myself, very much to my own surprise, preferring the new-to-me German fingerings. Perhaps my lifelong experience as a saxophonist has something to do with that.

    • @kishascape
      @kishascape ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope it's completely irrelevant experience. The German fingering was designed to be easier and for teaching kids in the 50s but once you get past basic songs it's dry limiting. Never fall down the German finger pitfall.

  • @gayanderson2242
    @gayanderson2242 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree that they were just leaving rhythm out of the tunes included. There were no time signatures either. It’s an interesting choice, but I think it was a conscious one. They should have just left the ‘bar lines’ out and it would be less confusing to those of us who can read music.
    Not sure about encouraging kids to blow sugar breath thru their instruments 🫤

Do bear in mind these are the first instruments produced by these companies; we have to give them a chance to develop and improve. Well presented and enjoyed the humor. Where was this recorder made, and why would they choose German fingering (for a product marketed more as a toy) over Baroque? What 'pros' are there to German fingering? Figuring if they chose German, there must be a reason.

    • @organist1982
      @organist1982 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My guess is that to go from E to F in the German system, you only have to lift the middle finger of the right hand, rather than have to deal with the forked fingering of F in the Baroque system, so, as a starter instrument, it's more accessible fingering-wise.

    to be fair, the simplification of rhythm is understood in the context of a child - I mean really little, kindergarten maybe? - just starting to read music, as a kind of tablature (at least I've seen something like that in the context of folk/popular music, just a list with fingering numbers, assuming the person knows the melody and the rhythmic patterns are at their own expense)

      I don't think so. In the end, the German fingering is much more easier at the beginning because the f is simply more "logical" to see and understand.

      I can tell you’re very pleased with your analogy, so I checked youtube and there is an awesome series by Bon Appetit, where a world famous sommelier tastes all kinds of budget wines. Really fun videos, thanks for the tip!

      @@Team_Recorder I'm pleased because it's exactly what you're doing in these kind of videos. Are they funny? Maybe at the beginning but after a while they started to be annoying (at least for me) I just wanted to let you know that. More Handel' Sonatas interpretation videos please!
