Thank you for this tutorial! I finished making one for my son today using Scheepjes Softfun yarn and foam cubes instead of stuffing. I had to do 2 additional rounds to get squares that were big enough for the cubes. It turned out great and I'm very happy with it :-)
Found you after I finished my first one. I struggled to figure out how to join the cubes at the end. For my next one, I am following your instructions! Great!!!

What sort of yarn is this? I'm in tasmania and only have acrylic yarn 8ply. The squares are to small and with the Magic ring with 8 stitches the hole won't close properly. Please help! I am new to crocheting.
The yarn I used is cotton blend, but it can be any yarn. If your square is too small, I would recommend you to use a thicker yarn or make one more round. I have a video about "magic ring".
