    Yeah I nabbed this for £20 on offer from the coop. REALLY surprised, low expectations but it blew me away in terms of quality for price.

      Bang on for me too. Low expectations, pleasant surprise. Nice when that happens

      Same I just bought it in co-op for £20 and was pleasantly surprised by its clean no frills taste. The middle of the road is not a bad place to be.

    I tried this recently on one of my live blind tastings. Agree with your assessment. It's a bit flat and nothing special but for the price it's an easy drinker and nothing offensive in it to complain about.

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely, I certainly can't label it as bad whisky as that's simply not true. Not great either, just ok but priced accordingly

  • @RebMordechaiReviews

    The term “Traditional Oak” is very confusing and lazy marketing. Why not just come out and say “American Oak”? As it happens according to my sources it is in fact Ex-Bourbon American Oak Casks (probably 2nd-Fill) but very often, the term “Traditional Casks” on a label indicates that it's European oak casks, possibly old Refill Ex-Sherry butts.
    Your terming it a guard whisky is funny! I have come across a few “budget” single malts lately including the ones you mentioned, plus the Bowmore No.1 and Auchentoshan American Oak and Ben Eideann, all 40%, NAS expressions and all thin and watery. This is why I cannot stop praising the truly excellent Glen Moray 12 (and the even cheaper Classic and Peated) which is sold at supermarket Blend prices and is an absolutely superb single malt. I’d put the wonderful Deanston Virgin and Tomatin Legacy in the same league as the Glen Moray. With three excellent single malts like these, those others (which Glen Keith seems to be one of them), don’t seem such good value after all.

      Fully agreed there Reb. Where I am, the £20-25 bracket seems to be getting increasingly poor, with a few exceptions of course. I actually touch on it briefly in my recent Gulliver video where I say I may have to rethink my £50 limit to get the quality I'm after at the moment

  • @caiobelmock

    Today i found it on offer at 20 quid at Budgens. If anyone has interest.

    My bar is arranged in such a way that the more expensive and higher ABV bottles are at the back... After a few drams, going from lower to higher ABV in a flight, I get to the back and after I have one of those drams I reach for another and another and another. The starter whiskies at the front don't change as often as the more tasty/expensive/stronger ones at the back do. Meanwhile, I haven't seen any Glen Keith on local shelves. I would pick it up in a heartbeat at the price you mentioned...

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember we've talked about this sort of thing before, as I tend to regularly kill off guard whiskies and the good stuff at the back stays around for a lot longer

  • @craigdoran6811

    It doesn't taste especially young to me. My guess would be an average of 8-10 years.

    really enjoyed this I got this at tescos for £20 in January/ feb . wasnt expecting too much but I found this to be very decent for an every day dram .. would recommend it and if it's on offer again and I'm out I'll buy again.. I was waiting for this one to be reviewed. good stuff vin

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky

    Never tried a glenkeith, dont look out for it really. I suppose price quality ratio matches and its probably good to wet one's whistle .

      I don't think it's worth any special effort to get. But anytime you're in the market for a cheap dram to drink guilt free then this might be one to go for

  • @TheWhiskyTrials

    Yup bit flat and thin for me these days. Prefer a Tamnavulin if going budget, especially the red wine cask finish which was going for 22 quid recently. It blows the Glen Keith away but yeh I agree nae bad. That technique of bottle stacking never works for me! I know its there 😅🤣

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve avoided tamnavulin for literally no reason at all, my hand just glides past it every time. No doubt I’ll get to it eventually

    Guard whisky, lol. I call them decoy whiskies. Not that I've been rocking back still thirsty from the pub much of late. But yeah, a few decoys are always useful.

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha yeah same concept! My cabinet goes back 4 or 5 bottles so I put all my best ones back there. It's a massive pain to get all the other bottles out of the way to get to them. Especially when my wife can hear the clinking!

    • @uilleachan
      @uilleachan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NoNonsenseWhisky I've been steadily liquidating my stash this last few weeks, that said I'm off it for a few days at the moment, there are still the bottles I intend to keep so my need of a few decoys is probably nearing critical. I may fish for a Glen Keith at the coop or SMWS, perhaps one from each..

    I found it started as quite Cardhu Gold like when I opened it but it developed as the bottle went on to something similar to Dalmore 12. It’s a solid sip, good value. Apples, Pears, Toffee on the nose. Toffee, Vanilla, Spice slight Coffee palate. Dry, Oak, Slight Pepper finish. Decent dram for the money! Love the saying “Guard Whiskey” 💂🏻‍♀️🥃

    I heard that the official NAS version which was released a few years ago was pretty anemic, and I'm not likely to see this new version in The States. I have an independent 24 yo Glen Keith, Cask Strength, Sherry Cask. I should probably open it. Cheers!
