Rustic Flowers Still Life Step by Step Acrylic Painting Tutorial

- Let's paint a rustic flower arrangement still life! We're going to add some golden wheat, purple puffball flowers, a stick of cotton buds. This is a really fun painting, and simple enough for beginners!

I’m painting on a 12x16-inch stretched canvas, but you can paint on any type and size of canvas you like.
I used:
• A pencil, chalk, and a ruler
• 1-in flat brush
• 1/2-in flat brush
• 1/2-in angle brush
• #6 round brush
• #3 round brush
• #4 cloud brush
• Fan brush (optional)
• 1/2-in bright(optional)

I’m using Liquitex acrylic paint in the following colors:
• Titanium White
• Burnt Umber
• Ultramarine Blue
• Deep Violet
• Cadmium Orange
• Cadmium Yellow Medium

Jane, you are an inspiration. I am 57 yoa and have not painted in 40 years. Literally had not picked up a brush in all those years. I have been a Marine and a police officer all my life, with 4 children and 8 grandchildren. They never saw my paintings coming. The people I work with are going crazy for my paintings, 8 of which I have used you as my pseudo teacher. Thank you so much for bring painting back into my life. Hi Jane I really enjoyed your tutorial I am definitely going to try it especially since you said “don’t be afraid of making a mistake it can be fixed” and showing how to fix them. I love the way you painted the cotton balls I live in Brisbane Australia and not too far from some of the cotton fields it looked true to life as did the onion and wheat 🌾 flowers when you finished Well done stay safe. At the moment we are in the middle of isolation from the Coronavirus here so also it will give me something to do. You explained everything you did In regards to the Colour of your paint and the size of your brushes I loved the way you showed me how to use the fan brush. I could keep going forever in regards to your tutorial but I will let someone else have a go.Thanks again Regards Di Galvin

Fantastic lesson! I want to try it. The hardest part looks like the vase, trying to get the shadows and highlights to look natural. You do it with such skill and knowledge.but you explanation and teaching skill are fabulous. I learned so much!

I love following your painting style, I have done a quite a few, I notice you do not use a wet pallet , but your paints seem to glide on your canvas and goes a long way. I use a wet pallet, plus a slow dry medium, and my paints still dry to quickly and i have difficult time blending.

HI Jane! So... I found this video tutorial, and decided to follow along with you...you go too fast for me to keep up!!! End result: nice table with a wonky corner and a shadow (VASE) that seems to be heading in the wrong direction! For sure I am going to try it again, maybe with a new canvas that wasn't reclaimed from a former painting...love your positivity and insights and instruction. I am looking forward to painting with you again! Stay safe and well.
