This is perfect for me. I'm so stoked. Feels like all the Apple Pro stuff is mostly just aimed at graphic designers and video editors, yet there are loads of pros making music on Macs (myself included). I get no real benefit from 5K displays and GPUs, it just makes the Macs I need way too expensive. With this Mac Mini, I get the processing power and the memory I need without all the stuff I don't care about, at a better price.
Purchased a 2020 Mac Mini i5 8gb. It is arriving today. I am coming from 2014 Mini and it has become sluggish when I have 3 applications running or multiple tabs open in my browser. I appreciate videos like this one because I do feel like this is a great machine for the price. Can't wait to see how this new 6 core machine compares to the dual-core 2014 one I have been using.
I think it's important to mention the additional equipment required to utilize the 10GB ethernet port. You're not going to magically just get 10x the speeds plugging it into your current gigabit switch.
This is actually the perfect machine for me as a software developer. The CPU and the RAM are the things that developers take the most advantage of. I have no real use for a great GPU, but if I find myself needing it down the road, eGPU support is a nice to have.
Please do a video where you talk about using your Mac Mini as a server, and how you overcome the different hurdles/things that now are harder after Apple made the MacOS Server an app. That would be really interesting!
you can still install anything you want in this machine...for server only purpose unless you need an easy MDM for mac devices linux would be probably better.
i agree- i dont understand how it works from a software perspective and how you integrate it into your workflow. i'm really considering one but need to know what sort of transfer speeds via a network, 10gbe, and thunderbolt direct connection i'd get. Wanting to edit 4k video off of a server.
I have 2 Questions not answered about the new Mac Mini. 1. The ram slots seem to only have 2 SO-DIMM slots and I have never seen a 2 by 32GB SO-DIMMs do they even exist or is there really 4 slots? 2. Are you sure the I can run two 4K monitors? If so that's all I need. Soon as I find out the answers I am going to buy I just want to know what will I need to buy as well.
davincij15 Yes it can run two 4k’s. Actually a 5k and a 4K. But Ram is what is unknown whether there are 2 or 4 slots. If there’s only two slots and you need 64gb , looks like you have to go to apple to upgrade. If you need 32gb, you can upgrade yourself. But still. I’m not yet sure.
Great job as always Daniel! Thank you! Here’s a suggestion for a video - tell us how to setup your new Mac Mini as a server and 15+ reasons to have a server and use a server. 👏👏👏
Yeah - shame about that. Although optical S/PDIF only supports up to 5.1 sound, so most AV amps now have switched to HDMI in order to support Dolby Atmos and 7.1 setups etc.
An error to note here is you showed a 32GB set (16x2) in context of 64GB RAM, as if you could buy 2 of those sets, but the Mac Mini only has 2 RAM slots so you actually do lose the 8GB it ships with in replacing it. You'll need two 32GB sticks from somewhere like OWC. The 2 slots vs 4 makes the RAM upgrade more expensive than you're showing but it's still not near Apple prices.
I was able to upgrade my 2020 Mac Mini to 64GB for $254 on eBay. Of course 64GB is the max you can upgrade to. Really like it. It works fine. I also got the Blackmagic Design eGPU from Apple. It works as advertised. While the 580 chipset may be getting a little long in the tooth, at nearly 6 Teraflops it’s more than adequate for my needs. There are many options and some are even upgradeable which the BD is not. The BD is not only powerful but it actually looks like something you would want on your desk.
Would love to see a video of you hooking up your new Mac Mini to an older iMac. I have a late model 2013 27” iMac and am having trouble connecting it to my new Mac Mini. I purchased an Apple HDMI to DVI adapter, an Apple mini displayPort to DVI adapter, and a DVI to DVI Cable to connect the iMac to the Mac Mini, but can’t get the iMac to recognize the Mac Mini. 🤬 I followed all the instructions online, but don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
I think it is great! I don’t believe that you need to max it out... 6 core and 256GB or maybe 512GB SSD should be enough. The cool part is that you cam always connect a thunderbolt 3 SSD or more. The eGPU is a great option for gaming and there you have it! The most modular mac.
I actually ditched my 2014 iMac with 128 gig Mac mini ,razer core x egpu and radeon Vega graphics ,and a Samsung t5 512 gig ssd,and a 4k lg monitor .this whole setup costs less than an iMac pro and is more powerful than it.
Daniel Campbell ahh clever 👌🏻 good idea haha unless Apple have them indicators which tell you the Mac mini has been opened before. That would suck then
MYSTIC KNIGHT 23 unlikely the last one didn’t and none of the macs do. They can tell when it’s non apple ram in AST 2 but not if it’s been opened as long as it it closed properly and screws are in the right sport especially the security screw
Thanks for this review was very helpful, does the the graphics (which you stated is not great) will this only affect gaming ? How about video editing ? Thank you
nice over view.. I just bought an mac mini i5 .. I am very satisfied with it at this point... i mainly watch videos and make small videos. In a few years i ll up grade the ram and get an eGPU but those upgrades will only cost me approximately 1000 and i ll have it future proofed for about 7 years.. so spending 2000 dollars for 7 to 10 years of hassle free computing is worth it.
I wanna buy this for app developemnt using Xcode (3.6GHz quad-core 8th-generation Intel Core i3 processor 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory , Intel UHD Graphics 630 , 128GB PCIe-based SSD storage1) what do you think?is it suitable for xcode ?
That is correct. The repair cost of the Mac Mini is much lower than the repair cost of an iMac Pro. Plus the Mini is 'modular'. You can upgrade the GPU by putting a different GPU in the eGPU enclosure. Same goes for the display.
I haven't decided, because I am still holding out till the I-Mac 2018, maybe later this month or December (before Christmas), with hopefully the 9th Generation 9900k, that will be good for awhile. I hope they come up the design that you had. Can you access the inside to the memory without breaking the warranty?
Nice round up thanks. This is a great option for studios that already have decent monitors and keyboards lying around. I work at a bunch of places that still happily use the old Cheese-grater Macs - these new mac minis could be a nice upgrade.
The Kingston RAM upgrade seems to have better clock timings than the Crucial brand you recommend. I’d be interested to here other’s thoughts on the subject.
Is the 2018 model as quiet as previous versions? I've been using a 2011 mini to record audio because it is completely silent, but it's time now for an upgrade and I'm wondering if the vastly more powerful 2018 mini will be noisy. Anyone? Anyone?
Based on the photos I see of the new Mac Mini at Apple's website, it looks as though adding/replacing RAM won't be as complicated as it is with the 2018 model.
Thanks for the great overview, Daniel!...Just purchased a 2018 Mac Mini in order to use it it as home server...Do you recommend the Apple macOS Server App ?
Daniel, REALLY HOPING that you do a vid on making this MacMini your Server! Please do a vid showing how to do this, & your thoughts on the MacMini & ease, benchmarks, daily/practical usage, etc....of making this be your home server( think is what said). So, hoping do this vid with MacMini, until than....thanks for your vids & dedication/work. Cheers, A
I am planning to use this Mac mini for VMware administration trainings where in I use VMware workstation or parallels and spin multiple servers and operating systems...I will be going with good ram of around 32 gb and I7 processor for sure...do you suggest Mac mini could take that load or it is bettter to go with iMac pro? Does egpu is needed again for these tasks or internal gpu is sufficient?
Good overview. I’d be careful about simply replacing a new Mac mini into an existing rack enclosure. The mid to high end configurations will run much hotter than the previous version and could overheat in an enclosure not specifically designed for these new models.
What monitor would you recommend for it ? I have a dedicated internal HDD on my old iMac.for a consolidated Photos library. Would it make sense to get a thunderbolt 3 capable enclosure and use it as an external drive ? Are there any available ?. It seems to make sense to move these household server type of use cases to a MacMini instead of getting a new iMac ...
suresh vempati I think all displays are compatible. I’ve tried multiple displays with my Mac mini and they all worked. Also remember some displays might need drivers to work.
Hi there thanks for this nice video. I am a music producer and am concerned about usb versus thunderbolt as all my midi controllers are usb. My old 2012 mini has 4 usb. does that mean I will have to buy new wires?
Thanks. I got the i7 with 32 gb and 1Tb. Primarily for music production but will be expanding to Logic Pro X too. If you have a Blackmagic eGPU it would be great to see how well it helps the Mac Mini. Most of the reviews are with the MacBooks which is less helpful. I imagine that the performance increase will be significant. I know it is on the MacBook 13 which has a better graphic card than the Mac Mini.
Bob P I’ve been looking at what’s available in egpu cases. The BM case is the most expensive overall, although it does have extra ports. Asus make a very compact egpu, but misses all those extra ports. 9to5mac has good video reviews.
This is such a good video. I had my heart set on a imac. But I may just get a Mac Mini instead. I already have a monitor. (it's only 1080p) And a apple keyboard from my 2011 Mac Mini. I do have a question. I have an elgato capture card HD, one fo the old ones where you can connect retro consoles up to it. Would this new mac mini with the i7 processor be able to handle that, or would I need a dedicated Graphics card?
Cheers from Brazil! I think new mac mini is awesome to be a base desktop to my parents. Easy to go and durable. Apple products is so expensive but at least they last longer.
An interesting comparison video would be to see the difference between a NEW Mac Mini and the current line up of iMacs (with equivalent RAM and CPU and GPU). Looking forward to the price comparisons.
They have to change the size I think. I'm no gamer or Graphics card expert, but all the good ones are too big (ie: too long) to fit in there aren't they? Agree with MYSTIC KNIGHT 23 - E-GPU solution probably better.
djbabyboi ah okay I see, so Apple could have fitted something like that in if they’d wanted, Hmmm. Oh well, I guess you could say it’s BYO mouse, keyboard, monitor, and now gpu as well!
Looking for 64GB RAM upgrade kit for Late 2018 Mac Mini. That would be 2x 32GB modules. All I can find is 2x 16GB modules online, which would only bring it up to 32GB. Please advise...
I use a mini mac now for a server. The Drobo 5dt is connected to it and it is my PLEX server. I am looking to replace my MacBookPro with the new mini mac. I have a monitor and keyboard, etc because I use the MBP as a desktop.
Here's not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven, not eight........ Not nine, not ten, not eleven, not twelve, not thirteen, not fourteen, but...... FIFTEEN things you probably didn't know about the Mac mini 2018
Hi There... Thanks for your videos! I have a quick question: Do you think that if I plugin three SSD USB 3 Drives ( Samsung X5 ) it will be ok as far as powering them?
I would love to see the mac mini hooked um to my 55 inch 4K TV because even my 15 inch MacBook Pro acts like an Aircraft when it‘s hooked up to it and even this has a dedicated GPU
Super bummed they didn’t put a dedicated gpu in the Mac mini since apple doesn’t support egpus in boot camp for gaming. Also, the storage start of 128 is garbage. Cost is way to high.
@@wodan74 Even if that's partly why, they really overcharge with the SSD upgrades though. You can get similar SSDs for almost half the price of what Apple is charging. Just ridiculous. I'm planning to get one of these, but will also get an external hard drive instead of upgrading the internal one for stuff I don't need to keep directly on it.
Can you please do another Note 9 camera face off with the new camera updates its had. Sorry I know this is unrelated. Apparently they've tried adjusting some complaints with back lit images and a few other things.
Unfortunately, the new Mini headphones' port has no optical-digital audio out so how one is supposed to connect this computer to a DAC without resorting to using a USB port? Also, there's no audio in, and no SD card slot. No thanks.
I went basic and regretting 128gb ssd. New model 256 now. Xcode use mainly but struggled even os and Xcode (dam you cache. ). Got a 2011 mid fully working with 4tb ssid ideal for pics music that still works great just os Xcode forced upgrade. Repurchasing id go 1tb ssid.
Hi! How do I remote to this Mac mini using my 5yr old MacBook pro retina and use it for video editing. To save on cost, I would buy this and an egpu only and use my MacBook as the monitor keyboard. Will this work?
Hi, I am going to replace my twin xeon server running Windows server 2012 R2 with a mac mini as I am sick of windows. What spec would you use for it to be a media/file/IP camera server? Also I have a 24 bay Mini SAS Hdd rack and would love to have it connect to thunderbolt. Any ideas?
This device is looking better & better; especially since the higher price from last model of the MacMini(which loved cuz was able to upgrade RAM, storage etc....was great.).... Now if we could also upgrade Ethernet card, which, knowing Apple it's soldered to mobo or a daughter board.... But can we also upgrade the storage like we can RAM(as we could upgrade storage & ram on older MacMini computers); if we can upgrade storage, this might be a pretty good device, even with higher price take from first gen models.. Cheers, A
There is zero to fix on a new mac mini if it's broken under warranty you will get a new one, you better have saved your stuff as you won't be getting it off the old one.
Several videos on Y.T. how to change the RAM, watch them several times, have the right tools. The IFIXIT tool kit works great getting the job done. Need very small Torx screwdrivers.
you are wrong, bluetooth 5.0 does not affect audio performance, it doesn't save battery and it doesn't sound better. it's beneficial for other bluetooth applications but it's irrelevant for audio devices.
The SSD is soldered on board so when it will require replacement be prepared to spend a large amount of money... That kills it for me. And that's something most reviews forget to tell you....
@@Redzo79 So i have to pay another $200 for an external SSD 500GB... Some people can't compute the long term maintenance costs of the products they buy. I bet you never wondered how much you will pay in repairs for any Mac product, as soon as your warranty expires...
By the time it breaks, replacing it with an external drive will be comparitively miniscule in terms of cost. Having used Mac's with internal SSD's for a few years now, I've never had one fail, which is in contrast to SSD's from Samsung/Crucial I've used in desktop machines that have been relatively less used.
the best thing they could have done is to put a kaby lake G processor with Vega M GH graphics they would ve not been able to manufaccture enough of these i cant bbuy anything with integrated graphics

Nope :)

Kensington Link Building SEO if you want content you have watch ads. That’s Internet 101 now dude. Get used to it. It’s how creators get paid.
Travis Tuell dude, I get that! But 4 ads in 11 mins is ruining the continuity esp when the ads break mid sentence.

Can I get an external monitor that has a built-in WebCam for my Mac Mini
Looking for 64GB RAM upgrade kit for Late 2018 Mac Mini. That would be 2x 32GB modules. All I can find is 2x 16GB modules online, which would only bring it up to 32GB. Please advise...
Buck and Buck, check eBay.
So, will it run ESXi ?
hi , I have problem wit h my new ben-q monitor I can't switch the rgb option the colour is disappointing how to solve this "?
I use a mini mac now for a server. The Drobo 5dt is connected to it and it is my PLEX server. I am looking to replace my MacBookPro with the new mini mac. I have a monitor and keyboard, etc because I use the MBP as a desktop.
Here's not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven, not eight........
Not nine, not ten, not eleven, not twelve, not thirteen, not fourteen, but......
FIFTEEN things you probably didn't know about the Mac mini 2018
if I'd known this was coming our I'd have waited and gotten the mini over the imac. That's what I wanted instead of the mac over taking my desk
Hi There... Thanks for your videos! I have a quick question: Do you think that if I plugin three SSD USB 3 Drives ( Samsung X5 ) it will be ok as far as powering them?
You talk super fast bro 😂 to much information for us! Love it!
If my internet speed is only 200mbps down & up, is there a reason to upgrade the Ethernet port or just keep the one it comes with
The Ethernet Port on this Mac Mini is not for your internet connection. You will be connecting with Wi/Fi.
I wish Apple provided customizability in places where there aren't any Apple Stores or in countries where you can't buy online
Very helpful when trying to determine between the iMac pro and the newer Mac mini. Thanks, and love your channel :)
I would love to see the mac mini hooked um to my 55 inch 4K TV because even my 15 inch MacBook Pro acts like an Aircraft when it‘s hooked up to it and even this has a dedicated GPU
im gonna build my work station with the Mac mini set up.
Thanks,
Super bummed they didn’t put a dedicated gpu in the Mac mini since apple doesn’t support egpus in boot camp for gaming. Also, the storage start of 128 is garbage. Cost is way to high.
The low storage version is probably for farms where they use external storage and just need to put the os on it's internal storage,
@@wodan74 Even if that's partly why, they really overcharge with the SSD upgrades though. You can get similar SSDs for almost half the price of what Apple is charging. Just ridiculous. I'm planning to get one of these, but will also get an external hard drive instead of upgrading the internal one for stuff I don't need to keep directly on it.
Huge fan. It’d mean the world to me if you replied to my comment. If I carry on snacking I’m going to be huge.
:D
Is the internal SSD easily replaceable too?
Nope ;(
Can you please do another Note 9 camera face off with the new camera updates its had. Sorry I know this is unrelated. Apparently they've tried adjusting some complaints with back lit images and a few other things.
Do you post when school is almost out👀
After seeing the new Mac Mini , I am now exited about upcoming Mac Pro
Unfortunately, the new Mini headphones' port has no optical-digital audio out so how one is supposed to connect this computer to a DAC without resorting to using a USB port? Also, there's no audio in, and no SD card slot. No thanks.
Will the Mac mini work with 144hz monitors?
ok , 2014 Mac mini also no any problem to run 144
Can you connect 4 eGPUs and connect 2 Displays per eGPU in the Mac Mini?
TheKenji0909 yes unfortunately
I went basic and regretting 128gb ssd. New model 256 now. Xcode use mainly but struggled even os and Xcode (dam you cache. ). Got a 2011 mid fully working with 4tb ssid ideal for pics music that still works great just os Xcode forced upgrade. Repurchasing id go 1tb ssid.
hi, can you upgrade the ssd to the new corsair MP510? also can you choose memory at 3200 MHz?
Kurt Digenis the internal ssd is soldered in so you can’t upgrade the ssd.
thunderbolt 4 equivalent is coming late 2019. double the bandwidth of t3. PCIE4 out in 2019 too
So what display to pair with the Mac Mini?
Monoprice. You can get HD displays that match apples resolution for 50% less.
Scott Lowell you mind showing us website where we can get these displays?
Well, basically anything that supports USB-C or HDMI 2.0
What do you mean set up as a server?
An AMD GPU/CPU would have bumped the game, but Intel's board makes it captive.
Hi! How do I remote to this Mac mini using my 5yr old MacBook pro retina and use it for video editing. To save on cost, I would buy this and an egpu only and use my MacBook as the monitor keyboard. Will this work?
NoelKoG I don’t think you can do that.
Any ideas?
Would you be able to upgrade the SSD aftermarket?
andr3marques no
Only externally.
I already knew I didnt know 16 things
This device is looking better & better; especially since the higher price from last model of the MacMini(which loved cuz was able to upgrade RAM, storage etc....was great.).... Now if we could also upgrade Ethernet card, which, knowing Apple it's soldered to mobo or a daughter board....
But can we also upgrade the storage like we can RAM(as we could upgrade storage & ram on older MacMini computers); if we can upgrade storage, this might be a pretty good device, even with higher price take from first gen models..
Cheers, A
Is the SSD upgradeable easily ?
Benjamin Begg Zero not upgradeable at all :(
Scott Brady thats disappointing
There is zero to fix on a new mac mini if it's broken under warranty you will get a new one, you better have saved your stuff as you won't be getting it off the old one.
It needs a dedicated gpu but the egpu kinda solves it
Recycled aluminium means that they are using waste aluminium from their other processes to increase their profit margins. It's genius.
Great wrap up. I'll be using some for Parallels virtualisation. They work really well. Cheers, JAYTEE
Are you a customer of Heisenberg?
Thanks for the 15 things that you mentioned here !
The SSD is soldered on board so when it will require replacement be prepared to spend a large amount of money... That kills it for me. And that's something most reviews forget to tell you....
Buy an external one moron.
Geo Man I’ve had my first Mac since 2010 and any problems I’ve had I’ve been able to fix myself for no more cost than I would a pc.
These are good to run as servers from my own experience.
Not sure if any upgrades will work with the T2 crap..
CHRISONTV I know. How awful would it be if you couldn’t swap out the RAM.
@@mnw615 Its actually pretty consumer unfriendly and its rediculous that people defend Apple for that decision.
the best thing they could have done is to put a kaby lake G processor with Vega M GH graphics
they would ve not been able to manufaccture enough of these
i cant bbuy anything with integrated graphics
