Real Madrid have issues. There’s a huge amount of individual quality in the squad which is often enough to get them out of a hole in La Liga, but against top European opposition, the lack of a plan that plays to their strengths and defensive weaknesses in positioning and pressing will be problematic. Zidane has a tactical struggle on his hands to get things right.

Connor Spinks midfield. All wanting to supply and not willing to track back or come forward. Obviously you’d want your midfielders to do one or the other, depending on the situation, but there’s clearly some confusion with “too many cooks in the kitchen”.

    • @tave6202
      @tave6202 5 ปีที่แล้ว +50

Bad positioning, as in getting too close to a teammate instead of opening up space and making options for passes, is in practice the same as having less players. The most important thing is the space you use, and Real's problems are that they aren't using the space in the pitch correctly, which leaves them in disadvantage in most scenarios.
Like the video said, if none of the wide midfielders help cover the defense, there is space left which leaves the defense without enough players. Likewise if both strikers drop back, there is no one occupying the box, leaving that space uncovered and the defenders with an advantage.
TL:DR the Madrid players are, more often than not, out of position in both cases

the players are doing fine. There is lots of chemistry between them, but you can only do so much when your manager is playing you in positions you don't like, and isn't willing to adapt at all when things go wrong. Valverde relies way too much on individual brilliance to break the mold of his lackadaiscal defensive style. It's why barca fans are so impressed by ansu fati, who has been able to help bring enjoyment to a team and club that have been utterly ruined by the coach and upper management.

Quite accurate . Although the reason Zidane has been leaving our midfield unattended is as a result of injuries, and lack of options due to poor planning. At the end of this month we can have a more information to make an analysis with although if at some point this season we sort out our defensive issues to concede an average of a goal per game , we will start to look unstoppable.

what they need to adapt is to play casemiro as a half back, after full backs will push further varane and ramos would drift on the sides leaving casemiro as a sort of central defender, this can help. but real also needs some really hard working box to box midfielders type of Kante or Savic that will both get into attacking positions and defend when needed leaving 100% on the pitch. You cant demand it from both Kroos and Modric who are really similar type of players.

My idea is they should play 5-2-2-1 for standard formation. GK: Areola CB: Ramos, Varane, Militao. LWB: Mendy/Marcelo RWB: Carvajal/Odriozola 2x Mid : Modric/Casemiro/Kroos/Isco/James No wings, only side forwards and a striker : Bale/Benzema/Vinicius/Jovic/Hazard/ Rodrygo. The main key is that I want the wingbacks to play more on the mid side and act like 4 mids in total, while also providing excellent crossing and also cutting out the wide space for counters. The three forwards are given free roles, main point is to score no matter what. Center Backs can pushup when needed.

The main problem is (as you said) They lost a natural leader, Ronaldo
He was the main player in the squad, his personality demanded that, before his skill
When you take out, with no clear leader, everyone gets lost.. and this is exactly what Madrid looks like.. LOST!
Either Bale/Benzema rise up to the challenge or wait for a leader to join
Hazard will never be a leader, he doesn't have the mentality or personality to lead.. Although he's a brilliant player

This guy won three CL-titles after all. One after a one year hiatus when his successor failed to deliver and he returned. He can't be THAT bad as coach as he is suggested here.
And yes: spending money is easy, although ManCity, Paris are spending far more and so far, if the CL is the goal, to no avail. Hence this is also rather a pro than a con point for Zidane.

In Real's Champions League victory seasons, Modric used to play like there were 2 extra men on the field, but he is aging now which has led to their defensive problem. Modric sometimes used to cover at right-back when Carvajal went high on the right-wing, and he also seemed to be present to send through balls into the opponent box....he was a beast. Real's defensive woes are because of an aging Modric, combined with a lack of more defensive-minded players on the squad. Fede Valverde is showing some promise to replace the aging Modric, but only time will tell if he has a high enough work rate. Meanwhile, Real Madrid should experiment with a double pivot of Kroos and Casemiro with Luka Modric playing as a more conservative no.10 like Madrid days Ozil or prime Kaka, Luka would not have to rely on his aging legs, and rather rely on his passing skills to open up opportunities. Zidane should also experiment with James at that position, don't really know why Zidane doesn't like him, he is a quality player.
On offense though, Real Madrid is well packed, and the absence of Ronaldo doesn't seem to have bothered them as much. Of course, it is difficult to replace someone of Ronaldo's caliber, but the squad has done a good job of sharing the workload. Marcelo's drop off as the top left-back in the world may affect that somewhat though. Ferland Mendy is a more conservative, defensive-minded fullback, not as offensively gifted as Marcelo, so Zidane might have to find alternative options of initializing their attack. Gone are the days of seeing Marcelo dribbling the ball forward and then cutting back for a cross.
At full strength, Zidane should try out a formation like this:
    Courtois-Mendy Ramos Varane Carvajal-Casemiro Kroos-Modric/Isco/James-Hazard Benzema Isco/Asensio
Really excited to see if Zidane can incorporate recalled players like Odegaard and Hakimi into the squad, along with Rodrygo and Vinicius who are already performing well. Zidane definitely should invest in a defensive midfielder like Eduardo Camavinga to give Casemiro some relief.

I think a huge problem is also that in a 4-4-2 we try to play Casemiro as a ballplayer. Our right side is used to service from Modric, so both Carvajal and Bale just wait up front, while Casemiro can't get the ball to them. Then all our attacks must come from the left side of the field, making our attacks more predictable!

He does soo much for the team. He has an amazing football IQ. He drops deep, links up, clears space, playmakes (build up) , presures the ball high, holds the ball... has a great work rate, has the experince for all the young-guns to look up to, he's unselfish + he also has that scoring touch, wich is many times considered as ''inconsistent''. He is big/strong, can score with both feet (prefers right, I know), wins air-battles, scores headers and his dribling skills are on point. He is very consistent just as a player and decision maker for RMCF... don't ever doubt that. Just watch him move around the field and how he quickly reads the play and knows where he has to be, to bring out the best of the play. He should be pictured in the dictionary next to the word UNDERRATED :). After he is done playing in Madrid they should've make him a statue, no matter what people say (SCORING GOALS IS NOT HIS PRIORITY... it's so much more)! Feels like a team with traits that still favour CR7 (crossing and 2 strikers). They seem to have players like Bale, Hazard and Vinicius (plus the defensive signings) who can help them. But they aren’t being used as they should (as seen in video) and Zidane’s trust in the older heads seems like an unwillingness to risk the young players and embrace the future. Hazard is a weird one, a signing to win now but what this team needs is a transition (like what ironically Chelsea are doing). Hazard will make the fans expect huge, so a rebuild with 3-4th place finishes will not be tolerated (board or fans). Unless Zidane gets time to rebuild properly and make mistakes, this could get messy and disjointed. Barca are showing holes and if they make mistakes, Madrid should be ready but at this point Atlético are the better side to do that

For me the best formation would be 4-2-3-1. Casemiro and kroos at the base of midfield, while james/isco just in front of them. Hazard given the free role to dictate the play, benzema as a 9 and gareth bale looking for space to attack and stay up front. This would help the pressing with the front 3 can press high without worrying their defence because there are 3 player behind them ready to cut the passing lane if the opposition break the press. In attacking too, benzema and bale would stay on the box like front two with hazard on left looking for the ball and isco/james supporting. Full backs like carvajal and marcelo provide the width while casemiro and kroos sit behind the attack to stop counter attack. The only worrying side is kroos is not as mobile as he used to and i think in January, they should buy a deep line playmaker with mobility and strengh but also a good passing and vision. Ndombele would be perfect but he already gone to spurs. Maybe they should gamble on player like sangare(toulouse player) who is still 21 but already a good passer and has a good defensive numbers in him.

This is exactly the problem that Germany had in the 2018 World Cup. The fullbacks, especially Kimmich, pushed up really high, leaving him out of position for opposition counterattacks. It also overcrowded the wings, not leaving enough room for the actual wingers. In the middle, Germany didn't have a real out-and-out striker; it was more like they just had an extra attacking mid who dropped off, like Benzema and Jovic were described as doing in this video.
To make matters worse, in Germany's first game against Mexico, they didn't even have a real defensive midfielder like Casemiro, who could have at least partially defused the lack of fullbacks on defense. Khedira, who has the strength and defensive ability to act as a defensive mid, was always pushed up really high on the attack, almost like a second striker. Kroos stayed back, but he was always beaten very easily on counterattacks, mostly because he's not a particularly good defender and also because he simply wasn't fast enough to keep up sometimes. The midfield balance was better when Rudy played as a true DM in the Sweden game, though.
