    Billy, I'm a Catholic priest in Canada, and I've been really enjoying this convent series.
    The statue you've found is beautiful and I have a fair guess who it is:
    Simple garments, with big book suggests one of Evangelists - an author of one of the Gospels. He is not dressed as a bishop so will not be Saint Nicholas. The biggest clue (without any carved name plaque) is that he has no beard. Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist is depicted with no beard and therefore distinct from the other apostles & evangelists. Without more clues on the statue, nor his other 3 companions (Matthew Mark, Luke) this is my best educated guess and how I would identify him if he arrived in my church.

    Traditionally in Catholic Churches, a statue of the Blessed Mother would have been in a niche on the left of the alter. The niche on the right would have had a statue of Saint Joseph, Jesus earthly father.
    The statue you bought looks to be Saint John the evangelist. He usually is depicted as a young man with no facial hair. He would have a book because he is a writer of one of the Gospels and the Book of Revelation.
    Enjoying the videos.

    I think the extra money you spent on the kitchen is well worth it. It’s the main kitchen for all of the offices. And you are making all of the offices look so nice so it would’ve been a shame to not redo the kitchen. Can’t wait to see the finished kitchen! ❤

      The kitchen os the heart of any home, therefore deserves the additional expense. As it is new also worth knowing that you will get your full monies worth of use out of it before having to replace it ie long term view of expenditures and savings. Cheap for short term savings only cayses headaches and mkre expense sooner rather than later.

    I love all your videos, Billy, but this one with the saint, brought tears to my eyes. Restoring the convent is really like a mission and I'm so glad that you want to restore the chapel, instead of doing something else with it. It just seems like a sacred place every time you film there. Only a few people could take on the tasks that you have. You were born to do this!

  • @danielintheantipodes6741
    @danielintheantipodes6741 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Statues used to be painted, that was normal. Europe was quite gaudy in the earlier times, not all this tasteful (to my taste) plain wood and unadorned marble. Everything was painted. It looks really lovely in the niche, as if it belongs there.
    Thank you for the video!

    The statue is the perfect fit! You are right, when you see something like that you have to buy it, if you'd passed it up, you'd find others that were too big or too small and always wished you'd bought this one. A great find.

    • @nkb1
      @nkb1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Billy needs to measure the statue and keep the measurements in his phone for further reference. So, he'll know if something is too big for the niches.

    The statue could be St. John the Apostle. He is usually portrayed holding a book and has a youthful face.
    Beautiful statue...well done.

    • @ElizabethDMadison
      @ElizabethDMadison 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That was my first thought as well, but it's hard to say. It's traditional to depict Saint John and the Blessed Virgin Mary standing on either side of a crucifix. so a large crucifix with Jesus hanging on His cross could be placed in the middle, and the niches could be John and Mary.

    • @ApolloReloaded
      @ApolloReloaded 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Could be, but I doubt that. His book is usually open, and he writes in it with a quill. Alternatively he often has a chalice in one hand, and the book in the other.

      That was my exact thought as they set the statue down in the chapel and then Ireadthecomments from priests, My immediate . “guess” was St John who wrote the Revelation, because he had no beard and had a book. I am a convert to The Catholic Faith and did not have a Catholic school education. it was an intuitive guess.Of course St John also wrote the gospel, and ihe was the one who took the Holy Mother into his home and returned home between his travels, so it is logical to think that he learned the details of the Nativity from Her through the years.. And I also had a flash of intuition that the statue did not get too far away from from the convent after it was closed.Then when reading a comment about Saint Joseph choosing Billy to be the one to restore the convent, I felt a sharp little thrill and goosebumps. Woouldn’t it be wonderful if the other statues that once graced the chapel would be returning. perhaps a record exists of to whom the statues and other objects were sold or given when the Sisters left? What a beautiful and amazing find!!

    For that big kitchen, how about a cooking school? Culinary School? I'm sure I'm not the first one to suggest this. It may be a neat thing, because students can opt to stay there, in those cels, and there'd be so much potential; a theatre school, with the chapel as the stage where really interesting theatre is staged, or musicals, or maybe a music school? I just think about the really great concerts that could take place in that gorgeous chapel, with the cooking school providing catering.

    Good morning Billy and Ryan, don’t like driving in that kind of rain.
    Good on you for getting the kitchen for your work areas. It’s going to be lovely. Ryan is very funny in describing your shopping trip, had me laughing when he said, She saw you coming mate”.
    But the truth is you’ll enjoy the kitchen as time goes on especially on those long work days. Consider a crockpot or pressure cooker for fixing soups and other foods for workers. Would save on costly spending out orders. Also like your filling fridge with water… much healthier than energy drinks.
    Oh my goodness, that statue is amazing. Beautiful details. The time it took to carve this statue must have been a joy. Well done guys.

      Most of Saints recognized as Doctors by the Church are featured with books. The statue of Billy is Saint Étienne, Saint Stephen in english.

    Hi Billy. I agree with Fr Leanman. Clearly an Evangelist( an author of one of the four Gospels) holding one of the Gospels. Not a bishop, like St Nicholas. St John would be the best guess.
    Such a beautiful statue!
    God bless you

    All you folks traveling around this general area keep an eye out for more statuary of a similar nature and send Billy a message if you find one. It will take a lot more eyes & legwork to find such items and the will make such a difference in the restoration of this fine Chapel.

    What a fantastic find. It would be neat to find more like it. I'm sure they're out there. For someone to go through all that work and make only one doesn't make sense.

    It looks like that's a perfect fit and probably where it came from, now they're just selling you back the stuff they took from the convent in the first place.

    I vote with Father Leanman. The robed statue fits a young, beardless John the Evangelist. Anthony is shown older and robed as a monk, Stephen/Etienne dressed as a deacon with stones somewhere in the depiction, Paul as an older man with a beard. Though each of these may be depicted with a book, only Stephen also is depicted young. The 1st century robing fits both John and Stephen. But it would have been easy for the skilled carver to put three lumps representing stones at his feet. Look at the care he took with the shoes. Is there a St. Jean Parish anywhere nearby?

    Billy, nice find in that carved statue. I wonder if there is a non-intrusive way to secure that statue in its' temporary niche. If someone slams that door beneath it...yikes! Keep the videos coming.

    Billy, if you want to buy more statues, I wouldn't just wait until you happen upon one in a brocante and they charge you so much money for it. Why not take a different approach, find out where churches are being disused, closed etc and call about the religious decor. Can you talk with a local priest or some 'higher up' organization that would know about these things? Tell them what you're doing but stress that you need to conserve your money. If they see you splashing out 1,200 on a statue then all the prices suddenly go up for you. Definitely look for the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph and a statue of Jesus would be good. But these things may come to you in time when you least expect it, I'm just suggesting you put those feelers out there at places BEFORE the objects get to the Brocante where they will be marked up. Cheers!!

    I agree with Father Leanman. This is a young version of St-John, the evangelist. My guess would be that he has been painted over to serve as an outdoor statue. It would be worthwhile to use a gentle heat gun on the bottom of the statue (I suspect it is plaster?) to see if any other color comes up. If so, enamel paint is the best option for this type of statue. I find this one a bit too dark for the chapel. Even with lights it might just scare small children. Good on you for keeping an eye open for statues. You will eventually need a cross. These are sometimes a dime a dozen (I mean, lots of choice!!!!) but I'd stick with a - close as possible - 17 to 18th century carved and painted one that is as life like as possible or, a Christ that has open arms to welcome the people. From the height of this statue, I'd say height of the cross to be 12 to 15 ft? Many blessings!
