Fantastic video as always from you. I bought the TR-8s for Christmas 2021 and I am in love with it. Of course there are much more complex drum machines out there but it is just the perfect drum machine for me so these videos really are very helpful even for the TR-8s :)
Dam the tr909 ain't cheap even the behringer clone is pretty dear best I have is the Roland t8 Id love a 909 or an 808 I'm getting the novation circuit tracks next week so hopefully I can get all these drum kits on it as u can download samples on it I actually have the 909 kit on Yamaha DJx so I use that alot But not as good as the real thing

I am lucky enough to have been handed down one of these by my dad. Its my favorite tool in my studio, makes me anxious to even have given the price they go for these days.

The two killer features of the 909 are the shuffle mode and the accent where the origin of the "drop" comes from as the kick drum drops in with the accent to "kick it up a notch".

I second that!,, love the 303 sound , never owned one (& probably never will..do have tb3) . Watched lots of demos but never really understood how programming one works.
I just finished building my SR-909 replica and it sounds just like your original here :). It's nice to hear a reference so that I could be sure everything was sounding correct. I also really appreciate running through copying patterns and using the track play functions. I knew it would be fairly simple (if convoluted). Thanks for a nice laugh too "this is horrible" 😅
How is the shuffle on sr 909? Is it the same as on original?
@@peglapegla It’s exactly the same since It uses the original firmware :) Differences are the print on the case and the improved metal vs plastic end caps. Otherwise it’s the exact same circuits and components from the original. You can use any of the parts from the SR-909 to repair an original TR-909.

Thank you for such a great informative video! Is there a way to change patterns from an external source via midi? Would love to change patterns from the DAW or a different hardware sequencer.
There needs to be special holidays for producers/DJs.

The Roland TR-09 Boutique has the same workflow, albeit with slight differences so I guess this is a video for programming that too.

Interestinghow the snare and clap interact to give the clap a kind of filter sweep. Any other drum machine that does this?
Have a TR-8S which has a good mix of Roland kits. Would still love a TR-909 tho!

lardosian: Kits are very punchy and sound great. You have the full range: 606, 707, 727, 808, 909. You can build on these original kits or basically start from the ground up to make your own unique sound. Every kit instrument can be tweaked, plus you also have the added bonus of introducing just about any sound sample you want via the sd card slot in the rear. All makes for a very versatile machine which is also a lot of fun to use.
Thanks Vimy, I might invest in one. Seems to be cool to hate on Roland these days but this sounds like a winner especially with all the faders and knobs.
how did they make that pitch envelope bend hard 909 kick back in the day? where it bends just the trans.

Just recently purchased my 909 i also have the Tr8. The thing thats separates them the most is the swing or shuffle. While the sound is close, The tr8 is a cleaner version of the 909. The 909 is more gritty raw sounding. But no matter what i do.... identical patterns don't sound exactly the same....close but not the same.

Ive seen this video but on really shuffled complex patterns the 909 has a more natural swing than the Tr8. For some people its not an issue but for my personal taste I can hear a big difference. I have kept my Tr8 because its still a great machine.
Btw great Videos!!!! Love your channel. would love to see some videos of you processing the 909 with some outboard treatment. :)
Yeah, I just don't think the tr-8 is superior in pure terms of sound. I would still record the original, or the original sampled. On the other hand the tr-8 is great for live! It's got even side chained input... so yeah, I enjoy them in different ways.

You could have explained the scale mode much better. Like kick on 1, 4, 7, 10. Snare on 4 and 10. hi hats on all 12 steps. Its the basic rock beat on triplets.

How do you prevent the sound from clipping? I need to keep the individual levels as well as the main volume knob slightly below 12 o’ clock or I’ll overload the inputs of my audio interface
Don’t you have a gain knob on your mixer to take care of hot signals?
What does accent actually do? It sounds like it would just increase the velocity
