Ranking Potential Sites for a Sacramento MLB Stadium...
Everyone in Sacramento wants to opine about how the city could get the Oakland A's. And if not that, then an expansion baseball team. What no one wants to answer is "Where would Sacramento build an MLB stadium?"
For those of you shouting the Railyards or Acro Arena foundation, we'll get to that but there is reason to believe the answer may lie elsewhere. If there is even an answer at all. Every potential baseball stadium site in Sacramento comes with a host of potential problems.
With that in mind, let's look at where Sacramento could potentially build an MLB stadium and the likelihood of each location being selected in the extremely unlikely event the city does land a team.
Actually, before we do that, a disclaimer. This is just a hypothetical exercise. I don't believe Sacramento is getting an expansion team nor do I think Vivek Ranadive is buying the A's from Jon Fisher. Now look, I know the city can support an MLB franchise, but I just don't think we are getting one.

The Touchback is the world's best sports and culture website…or something like that. You'll either really like it or really hate it. But it's worth reading either way. - กีฬา
This has to be the most Sacramento video on YT
Which makes it fantastic! 😋
A west Sacramento ball park with splash hits in the river would bring the river front to life! Would be a slam dunk for the city especially in the summer months! I would rather see the A’s stay permanently and give Vegas the expansion team!
Building right next to Sutter is the best case. The views from the riverfront will be very similar to PNC, both have yellow bridges. The idea that there is not much nearby isn't quite correct either, it's a short walk to old sac or even doco.
West sac is basically downtown haha it takes less than 10min to walk. All it takes is a bit more development to blend the 2 areas a bit more
I park at the public lot across the Tower Bridge for River Cats game and very few people head that way after games. And think about the opposite. If there was stuff around Sutter Health Park, would people walk over there before and after Kings game?
I'm from San Diego and i'm rooting for yall.
I think we can both agree L.A. sucks 👍
Thank you for making such a fun video! As a Rosevillian, a Sunrise Mall stadium (while unrealistic) would be AMAZING!! 😂😋
SUNRISE MALL REMINDS ME OF PUENTE HILLS MALL WHERE BACK TO THE FUTURE WAS FILMED. GHOST TOWN MALLS.
The highway 50/i5 junction is already a nightmare, I couldn't imagine how much worse a big league park in West Sac would make that traffic situation. The railyards is ideal, but I have a sneaky feeling that the infrastructure costs would be really tough. That could be a reason why the site is so cursed.
All freeway junctions are nightmares. Just need to get light rail expanded into west sac
During my research, it was noted that it was only 5% more expensive to build a basketball arena at the Railyards when compared to Natomas. It is possible that has changed. There could also be concerns that nothing ends up getting built around it. I know Kaiser recently announced plans for a hospital out there so maybe that is the catalyst for more development.
@@thetouchback Yeah, eventually that land has to be used for something
Great video. I agree with this list Downtown Rail Yard is the best option.
You mentioned that Sutter Health Park can’t be expanded. It could be but it would be very expensive. You would have completely demolish the suites and clubs reinforce the roof joints to be able to hold and support an upper deck. You would have to re build the suites and make a club level that goes all the way from 1B to 3B line then you have to build the upper level including a concourse can’t just have only one concourse.
It would probably be similar cost of building a whole new stadium.
So I wouldn’t say it can’t be done it would just be very slim.
Imagine if Montreal would of moved here? The Sacramento Cal-Expo's has a nice ring
Any dying mall property, would be excellent for a ballpark, arena, or football stadium. Its the financing that is going be risky with all of them. Especially buying the prime real estate for development making it a new neighborhood or village for that matter. Hence public funding is more common. Who wants to make that investment to happen? If you are the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, and Cubs, it would not happen. Lots of ownerships are way too cheap to invest in baseball. Its sad as a baseball fan, but someone in this generation has to reinvent the wheel for new stadiums funding in sports.
Dude…I’ll keep saying it’s your videos are absolutely amazing and not just informative but they’re also entertaining!
Personally…I think contraction of the A’s might be the best thing for baseball. It prevents MLB having to play in a minor league park, it gets rid of THE WORST OWNER in all of professional sports and it gives baseball a chance to hand pick an owner with deep pockets that’s committed to winning.
The MLBPA won't let contraction happen
They would tear down suites and convert Sutter health into mlb stadium. There’s plans to develop the waterfront already along with some of the lots currently used for parking. DOCO/thousands of parking spots are only a ten minute walk away and RT is expanding into west sac. Railyards would be cool but don’t see it happening
Sutter Health Park would need to be fully torn down and rebuilt if it was on the same plot. SHP was not built to be able to add a second deck. The MLB won't allow AAA and MLB to play in the same ballpark for more than 5 seasons. They need seperate stadiums
@@joshdrenth4526I don’t think it would need to be completely torn down you could leave the lower bowl of seats in place but you definitely would have to tear down the suites as you are correct that roof is not built to support all that weight.
You wouldn’t be starting from scratch but you would have to do a lot of work to it to expand it and renovate it to a full time MLB stadium.
I picture a wide gothic victorian age foot traffic/horse wagon bridge connecting Old Sac with the present stadium. Expand the stadium to 40 thousand. Parking on both sides of the river. Lively commerce in Old Sacramento into the night. Win win for both sides.
Actually, the Railyards makes far and away the most sense for a few reasons. One, lotsa land, of the type to build the ballyhooed and fashionable "baseball village" around. Two, it's near the Amtrak Station, so theoretically if any Oaklanders are still interested, they could take the Capitol Corridor up and walk over. Three, all the lawyers, bureaucrats, and politicians (your main source of ticket buyers) are close enough to walk - provided the sidewalks aren't melting. Four, it's an officially blighted area, so that any number of brownfield tax credits and TIF financing options are available. Howwwwevvvvver...I wouldn't even think of building anything for the A's as long as JFish stinks them up...He's Ranadive's problem...Sunrise Mall just recreates the same problem that the Royals, Rays, and White Sox are trying to run from - ballparks decoupled from their urban cores with too high a commute and parking penalty...
Vital Vegas on the Ricky Podcast stated Woodland and Fire Mountain as a possibility as well for the fact they will build the ballpark themselves. Fisher does not want I use his money and if the A’s are stuck in Sacramento.
DYING at the Rancho Cordova/Straw Hat bit!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If only one person gets that reference, it will all have been worth it.
Im not from Sac but here’s my take i can actually see the Rancho Cordova location heres why it’s really close to the airport sure thats an nfl thing but maybe that could attract an NFL team because the nfl loves close proximity to Airports, i mean for gosh sakes move the Chargers over there perhaps Sacramento can root for them. Maybe then build an entertainment district and maybe Six Flags could move Discovery kingdom into that area or open a new park because i know Six Flags was looking at that side of Cali at one point. If they really want too that area does seem somewhat landlocked but i just think the airport proximity helps its case.
LOL. What's the next video? Ranking Potential Sites for a Modesto MLB Stadium?
How about Folsom Lake?? Build an island (On the Sacramento County side) and let's play ball! It has to be the Railyards.
We'd have to hope those water levels stay strong or else it would just become a stadium surrounded by dirt parking lots below sea level.
SUNRISE MALL STADIUM! #SunriseMallStadium
Screw it lets put it in Arden
There are few things more fun/scary to think about than an MLB team in Sacramento
2025 Fresno River Cats
Elk Grove is too far away
Jokes are fun!
Sacramento is not getting an MLB team ..Even when the A’s are there they still won’t have an MLB team just two AAA teams
Thank you commissioner
Go Sacramento A’s 😮I hope this happens 😊
0.9% is not 1/9 of a percent. Rant concluded, carry on.
Sunrise Mall is owned by 4 or 5 different private owners. Its an actual shit show.
mlb in sacramento? GROSS!
If you think that’s bad…check out oakland
I bet most people didn’t get a whiff that the A’s would actually move from Oakland. Bet they didn’t get a whiff that MLB would approve the move. Bet they didn’t get a whiff that the A’s would be playing in Sacramento. How many times do people, especially TH-camrs, strike out on their predictions and still think they have the relevant knowledge to predict the future.
Where the hell is that fancy bridge they've been talking about for the last 20 years?
The last I remember hearing about the I Street Bridge is that they were redesigning it again because the final plans called for a private home to be demolished. But if you are redesigning final plans they weren't final.
Sacramento...home of artist rendering of shit that never gets built
Minus the Golden1 Center of course. Which is fairly significant. 😜
