    Good video. You covered all the stuff I wound up learning on my own since Dec 2023. No worries just had to get an adapter from W2ENY to get the iC headset I had for my G90: as Heil doesn't offer an adapter for supplying voltage to the mic element and I wasn't buying another headset. I only have two ears and the Pro 6 Elite iC sounds really good to my old ears.
    You did a really good straight-forward presentation of how to get up and going without much drama. Thank You.

    Thanks for the clarification which no one seems to provide. According to the Heil website the AD-1 needs to be purchased but what about the bayonet looking cable that plugs into the headset itself seen on the site? See what I mean? For as much as the headsets cost, the adapter should be provided as part of the headset unit. "We can put a man on the moon, but they can't..." seem to figure out how to bundle an adapter! So as it turns out, since I have a Flex 6400, no adapter is needed; the 3.5 mm plugs work fine.

      I think this may be what you need - Headset: heilhamradio.com/product/bm-17-2/ - Adapter: heilhamradio.com/product/ad-1-ic-adapter-cable/ My son (N4CVN) is SK and I received his ICOM rig, which I've been trying to get on the air, so I'll probably be purchasing these as well, just have to wait until payday... 73 de Tom

    Have a FT-991A and purchased the Heil AD-1-YM adapter. I have not purchased a headset yet. I watched this video and what I believe is the other video you made on same subject. Ok, here is where I am confused. As I understand it, we have 3 connections of concern. 1 PTT sent to radio, 2. Rx audio from radio to headset, and 3. Somehow we need Xmit audio (mic) from headset or other mic to the radio for Xmit audio. Based on description I only see where we are taking care of 1 and 2 with this adapter. So how does the mic audio get into the radio? Is the front panel phone jack on 991A bidirectional (direction controlled by PTT)?

    • @ND3N
      @ND3N  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mic audio coming off the headset should be routed through the adapter using the 1/8 inch female connection. PTT input to the rig is via the larger female connector on your adapter. If you have your monitor (on the rig) set up, you should be able to hear yourself when transmitting. Hope this helps.

    Hi Tom, Thanks for putting on this demonstration..and as usual I have a question for you. Looking at reviews on eham one gentalman said he was using the Heil Pro 7 headset and a Kenwood TS-890, he could only hear audio from one side of the headset and then connecting to a different brand radio, had sound from both sides. Any Issues with your Kenwood ?
    Thanks Again, K8CDM

      Hey Paul, Heil does have a few desktop mics you might want to look at. Also, most radio manufacturers have desktop mics made specifically for their rigs. 73, Tom

      You absolutely can, but you're going to have to wire up your headset for your rig as I suspect the pin-outs will be different. You may try a you tube search to see if anyone has put up a how-to video... 73 de Tom, ND3N

    Thanks ! I've noticed that with the BM-17 on my FT-991A, the microphone sound level is just perfect with the default mic gain. However, the same BM-17 on my FTM-400 requires that I boost the mic level to the max. Anyone else has to change their mic levels when switching from the issued microphone to an headset? 73.

    • @ND3N
      @ND3N  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jocelyn, Great Question. The simple answer is that they are two different radios. There may be (just guessing here) a difference in impedance. The dynamic element in the headset may be different than what your FTM-400 is expecting. You might want to contact Heil Customer Service - heilhamradio.com/contact/ - and ask them the question. Hope you get your answer. 73 de Tom, ND3N

    Thanks for the video but I'm running into a problem. I just received a FT-991A. I took the heil headset and heil trigger switch off of my kenwood ts590 and installed them on the 991 as per your video. The trigger switch does not key the rig and the receive audio is still coming from radio speaker only. Is there a menu in radio that I have to change? Your videos on the FT-991A are great.
