Love D100 Dungeon... buying this now. I too have a hard time deciding between D100 and 4AD. I like D100 a bit more, but both are so good at what they do, I have no problem with people liking one or the other more. Thanks for the video as I didn't know a new book was being released.
I only played 4AD so far and I have the first 2 books of D100 Dungeon waiting for me. My recommendation: get both! 4AD is cheapper and less crunchy from what I know. It's a simple game with tons of adventures. It's also easy to learn, very similar to a board game with dungeon crawl mechanics. It has tons of supplement material but you can get an excellent feel for the game with the core rulebook.
Since watching your Top 10 Solo Dungeon Crawlers video I've become obsessed w/ learning more about D100 Dungeon. I honestly kind of got out of board gaming after 2020. (I realized I had way too many games that I could never get to the table, and was spending too much on stuff I never used) and I got out of the hobby. Sold the stuff that didn't really matter to me, but I kept a few games. Shadows of Brimstone being the main one. I have gotten more stuff for it because I can always play it solo (2 characters at most, as you said, over 2 solo is... unmanageable) So I've been treating SoB as my solo game... but man... D100 Dungeon w/ the overworld stuff seems.... so damn cool. I'm looking at getting all the stuff right now and I'm like "no, no temper yourself, just get the base game and overworld" .... but at the same time I'm like "all the other books! addons! and the space version!" lolol. I feel like I'm gunna get into this one.
I agree with you that when we discover how good 4AD and D100 Dungeon, they go at the root of adventure. They have an excellent mechanics and design, and they are cheap compare to other D&D books. Now that i'm thinking about it, d100 books are really well presented and clean. 4AD is been out for a while. I'm looking for the day were Andrea work on 2nd edition with a cleaner design, rules well organized, update the tables and expand the 4AD universe!
I'm old school, I played D&D and 1E AD&D back in the 80s, so for me the greatest problem with D100 is that fact that it's based on a single character. The great thing about original AD&D was it was about exploring with a party where all the skills of the individual members of the party and character classes were needed to overcome the trials of the adventure. People who didn't grow up playing those old iterations of D&D or AD&D probably won't get that, but it was one of the most pivotal facets of that era of fantasy RPGs and the attraction of them. And that's why for me I'd pick 4AD over D100. I've had fun with D100 (yes I have it) but it doesn't capture that sense of a party having to work together with their individual skills to make it through the adventure. Each to their own but I much prefer the old school party of adventurers feeling of 4AD over the "1st person shooter" feel of D100.
Great video! Played the 2.2 free version and loved it! Never gotten around to actually buy the game. I should! Got to play Four Against Darkness just a little bit, and it didn't catch me as D100 did. Must dig deeper into this as well. Another new one though, 2D6 Dungeon is really interesting! Kind of a middle ground between these two giants! Have you tried it?
Hey Rob! Do you have any advice on printers? Been sometime since I wanted to get into games like this, I already got D100 book, I got the printed version but I prefer to get the PDF from drivethroughrpg and print those books myself, even though I'm an IT tech I don't know much about home printers lol, and then in your videos I see you do a lot of PnP stuff for your games, so for printers to do PnP games what are your advice or thoughts? I'm thinking about going with laser printer since I can leave it for a year and not worry about ink drying or ink clogs but would love to hear from you :).
Great video, Rob. I got into D100 based on your suggestion. So glad you pointed me in that direction. Got a friend to get going on D100, too. Thanks.
Anytime my friend

On a different track, remember Imperium from 1977, what a great game. Love to know your thoughts.

Yes it’s good but it’s not these two for sure
Help me out Rob I know you’re a Space Hulk man. If a Space Marine close assaults a Genestealer does the GS defend with 3 dice or only one?
None
