    41 phases, in 80+ minutes, knowing one mistake would lose the game, in Paris, with 60,000 Frenchmen screaming against them, from their own 22. Grandslam. This is the finest moment in Irish rugby in my opinion.

    3:52 For english speakers who doesn't understand French, roughly :
    - Drop from Jonathan SEXTOOOOON...
    - OH IT PASSED !
    - IT HIT THE BAR !
    - IT PASSED !!
    - THIS IS TERRIBLE ! TERRIBLE ! Jonathan at the last second crucifies the French team ! How sad ! This is horrible, HORRIBLE ! We had it... the team fought bravely ! Les bleus kept fighting all the game.... We are sad, so sad... So unlucky !
    - The gesture... Sexton's gesture... This gesture is astonishing ! He had cramps all along the previous phase, he was unable to stand up, I was watching him he was unable to move, to run ! And then he passes a 50 meters drop goal under the rain, after a 6 minutes offensive... What Sexton just did is crazy. Mathieu, it's crazy ! Incredible ! What a match winner !

Ici, cette victoire dans les arrêts de jeu leur permettra de réaliser de nouveau le Grand Chelem ! Merci pour nous avoir fait vibrer dans cette fin de match à suspens ! Jason,I hope I am in no way bursting your bubble by saying the following,,,,,,France,after some 20 or so phases of text book rugby (I say "text book" not in the context of trivialising in any way IRELANDS performance, but in the context of the rule book,on paper, Ireland did exctly what they had to do if they had their minds on being champions of the championship) by Ireland,knew all too well what Irelands game plan was and if like me Jason,you were watching live,then you,me,about 50% of the entire French population, about 85% of the Irish population and a whole load of neutrals from accross the globe were in no doubt that the drop kick was coming.France did their utmost to defend against this and so committed a few professional fouls in their multiple atempts to break or interrupt Irelands onslaught. If you watch the last twenty phases again, and after reading this, you will now be able to spot these professional fouls. Notice the French guys trying their damndest to be offside and just under the nose of the Ref. Fair played to the Ref,he was tempted but did not bite of the forbidden fruit and let the momentum flow until its fantastic conclusion.No shame on the French,we all would have attempted the same thing. What else could one do when faced with the most intelligent duo in modern international rugby,,,,,Connor Murray and Johnny Sexton,,,,of course.
      LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

    • @pdkodude283
      @pdkodude283 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. As Don Scott points out below of course there was the occasional attempt to end the game ahead, but the wall of blue held strong. I mean look at them. Without fail. Set piece, tackle made, two green commit, ball recycled...but before it is there is that solid blue line again. The French defence was simply stunning.
      Unfortunately for the French...the Irish performance there was quite possibly one of the best executed and most genius metre by metre play I've ever seen in rugby. Even with a cross field kick...still no handling error...in the 82nd minute. Simply stunning.
      This was a battle. Respect to both teams. Murray/Sexton match is made in rugby heaven!

      @@MrMollypockets professional fouls ignored by that particular ref who after that game and indeed preceding it was on a slippery slope into retirement due to some horrible officiating performances.
      Convince me I'm wrong.
      on a personal note I'm glad to see the back of him. He's decided more games on his poor last 5 min performances than all his collages combined. Even taking into context this latest glut of shocking ref performances. A refusal to blow the whistle because he likes a "flowing game" is no excuse for deciding the outcome and indeed defeats of rightful game winners. One expects the latest glut of bad ref calls will be worked on unlike his ability to be shit for years and still have the accolade of best ref in the world out of nothing more than public opinion outside the game rather than actual meaningful good performances during a game.
      Or should i say former best in the world... may we never see him like again. Ciao Ciao Mr Owens.

    a great moment in the history of sports... This is an amazing example of how a team can work together in the dying seconds of a game and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.... to go from one end of the field to the other in 40 phases of play and the excellence of the kicker to do that under pressure with the final kick of the game .. Pas d'accord.
      Toute l'équipe irlandais a très bien joué cette fin, avec patience, volonté, détermination, sens du sacrifice, opiniâtreté.
      Les Français ont perdu de leur propre faute, aussi.
      D'une part, il n'ont toujours pas de buteur de niveau international.
      D'autre part, en menant d'un point à 77mn30s, ils tentent la pénalité plutôt que de chercher une très bonne touche et de jouer la montre -et "
      "au pire", de marquer un essai. Résultat, ils rendent la balle aux Irlandais. La fin, croyez-le ou non, je l'ai devinée avant qu'elle ne se concrétise. Le drop de Sexton, je l'ai vu passer plusieurs minutes avant qu'il ne le réussisse.
      L'Irlande possède l'une des meilleures équipes du monde. Que réussiront-ils à la prochaine Coupe du Monde?! Les paris sont ouverts, et là je n'ai encore aucune vision... Les nivaux des 8, 9 meilleures équipes mondiales sont très resserrés, la Nouvelle-Zélande et, à mon avis, l'Australie en dauphin restant devant les autres.

    Both sides here deserve the greatest of credit and respect. One wrong move and France would have given away a penalty (there were two close calls...), one hand slip and Ireland would have a knock-on. This is rugby of the highest order. Genius and beautiful to watch.

  • @atourdeforce
    @atourdeforce 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Even people who watch rugby some of them you can just tell aren't able to understand just how good this last 5 minutes was by both teams and the ref.
    It was one of the most monumental things I've ever seen in sport. How the French held the line and defended so well, very little errors or fouls, and when they did produce a few sneaky but deliberate minor infringements that would have suited the French to concede given the field position in which they committed them, the ref kept his head and didn't break up play.
    Then you have the Irish out on their feet tired. How Sexton and Murray were able to control that last 5 minutes and direct the team, while taking calculated but extremely risky plays that fail 50% of times.
    The orchestration, the control and error free dedication of both teams. Then add to all this the absolute most important factor.
    This all took place in the final few minutes of the match when errors usually happen 10x more often than at a start of a match.
    Where normally Early in a match it wouldn't be uncommon to see a foul or error committed after 10 phases. This when the teams are mentally fresh and not fatigued or cramping and not gasping for breath just to be able to stand upright.
    It looked like Ireland were killing themselves just to get an extra meter only to be driven back 2 meters, but somehow they managed to gain 30-40 meters stay on their feet, not create errors or mistakes.
    Adding to this sexton has probably never kicked a successful DropGoal from that distance in his life and probably won't kick one as far again. It's all just incredible.
    He kicked a ball from a standing start with no run up 42+ meters in the 83rd minute of the match. How is that even possible at this altitude and temperature considering he isn't even known for having a long distance kick.
    Take note also that if a player is capable of kicking a ball 50 meters at the start of a match such as a penalty with a run up to the ball and a minute or to breather and composure time. Then take that same scenario at the end of the match he will be lucky to kick the ball 40 meteres with the same accuracy. And may be able to kick it 45 meteres but at the expense of accuracy.
    Now think one last time, Sexton out on his feet tired, slightly cramping, under intense pressure, in the 83rd minute of the match kicks a perfect 42+ meter drop goal with NO running start, And NO minutes breather/ composure time. It's fucking staggering when you really analyse it deeply.
    It was just a remarkable special moment in SPORT to watch, where that heart and desire that special something we can't usually account for all came to fruition to create a moment both teams should be immensely proud of.
    It was so good it's one of those things that shouldn't have happened but it did. The very fact we are human and make errors meant this really really shouldn't have been possible at that time of the match.
    But it DID!! And I witnessed it.

    Thank you. I was there, sat 6 rows behind the goal Johnny Sexton kicked the drop goal over.....and this video and music stirs the emotions again and again. Thank you. And hearing the French commentary is class as well. Continue your good work.

    Amazing!40 phrases of gut heart and determination im sure they could do another 40 without conceding a penalty but that kick was insane!so much pressure and he nailed it.

    • @shinydavidhowell
      @shinydavidhowell 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The amazing thing was that France never conceded one either! Because basically from the kick to the wing onwards, and that's over 15 phases itself, they were in a position where a penalty would quite likely cost them the game. If Sexton didn't decide to make that kick, there could have been another 20 phases of that impasse and nobody would have been shocked.

    Really like this. The music drowning out the commentary at the end was timed brilliantly. It's a fitting tribute to a classic rugby match. Newry, Ireland..

    Sexton is a genius. But Connor Murray is a sans-pareil -- look at the quality of that last pass. A second or two before his teammates go to ground, he takes a peak to see that Sexton is moving into position, and then slam, around a leg and straight back to Sexton.

    Credit where it's due, how excited do those french commentators sound!? If Sexton had done that to Wales while Eddie Butler was commentating he'd be fizzing.

    misty rain falling .. seriously under pressure.. way from home .. my thoughts was if we get any shot off.., it would be a miracle.,
    We got a huge miracle..all 23 played amazing that night ..
    fairly sure James Ryan and Dan Levy made 6 nations debuts that night ..
    class the pair of them 🇮🇪
