I have a 1984 Silverado i'm restoring. After I had the engine rebuilt,I drove it to a transmission shop to have the Transmission rebuilt. This is the kind of shop that removes the transmission, and disassembles it in front of you. It took them 35 mins to remove, and disassemble the transmission, and the shop owner said today's cars would have been towed in,with the kind of damage my transmission had.$450 and 1 day later I drove my truck home, with a 2yr warranty. The shop owner said he cannot offer a 2yr warranty, with today's transmissions they are just to delicate.By the way my trans still had the original factory internal parts, and my engine still had the original factory metal head gaskets. Its amazing my engine and transmission survived 32yrs before they got there first rebuild.
Jesse Aguilar my dad has a 89 s10 2.8 5 speed 4x4 he had to replace the tranny cause no ever put gear oil in it it still had tranny fluid in it so it died and engine wise it’s only had the oil pump replaced and it has 350k give or take never been rebuilt except the oil pump had to replace the trans and it came out of a 140k miles truck from a junkyard when my dads truck had 150k on it when he swapped it still runs great rear ends gettin loud though

I've verified that when these old trucks were built 16-18 gauge sheet metal was used, while nowadays 20-22 is the norm even for trucks. Ever wonder why you see people close their doors and the metal flutters? Fords are brutal for this, the 2007 and newer GM trucks have fluttering hoods at highway speeds. They call it dent resistant, I call it BS. Also the OEM's now consider glass as part of measuring the structural integrity for a vehicle, including trucks. Are newer vehicles safer all around? yes. Are older vehicles safer in fender benders? yes. Are newer trucks more powerful? obviously. More capable off road? Not a chance. After plowing snow and driving in the bush with a 2015 3/4 ton chevy. My 85 1 ton 4WD is twice the truck plowing snow and venturing offroad by a long shot. Not as comfortable though. But its a truck, not a car. I prefer the KISS principal brought to us by the US Navy.

its how the steel was treated, it was solid, but it wasnt treated, and ive owned my fair share of 67-72s, the outside didnt rot bad, but the floors and inside of the box and fenderwells rusted out just as bad

This marketing video is amazing! It is almost brings a tear to my eyes. The kinds of ads are why I went with Chevy's from the start. They actually show the parts on the truck and and why they are on there. And even show under the hood and say how easy servicing is (not even possible in some trucks today!). No ads today comes close to this one. All manufacturers want to show today is the fancy electronic gizmos, nothing that somebody who actually needs a truck should really care about. Contrary to what the manufacturers think, not everybody needs an overpriced off-road beast truck. This video is what a truck is supposed to be! They can make more base trucks today, but they make more money off the higher-end versions.
hmm, well at 1:42 it says the '83 chevy 1ton dually will tow "up to 13,000 pounds". A 2016 model 1 ton dually (from any of the 3 brands) will tow up to 30,000 pounds. That's a LOT of groceries!
My grandpa bought a new one in 87. The last year of the square body and first year for throttle body fuel injection. Had a fuel injected 350 that made 200hp 😂. It was a total slug but it drove and rode good! It was brown and cream colored with long bed . Him and I had lots of fun in it. Wish I could go back

These were some of the very best Chevy trucks built! Their only weakness was the body panels rusting to soon! But I’m right now looking at one about the same year, that’s Military Surplus. The truck is a 3/4 ton 4x4, with I believe is a 6.2-6.5? Diesel, non turbo. There’s absolutely no rust of any type, only 67,000 miles and runs very good, or as well as can be expected. The previous owner added new Dual Exhaust Custom made from 2.75” tubing, with two nice fairly quiet mufflers. The gearing is 4:10 by the count of revolutions of driveshaft to wheels, with locking differentials, the front added by last owner. He also stripped the OD Green paint color off, but not to bare metal, had Bed Liner added to the bed along with about 8” up from the bottom, along with underneath. If I can get it for the right price I plan on buying it. I have access to a lightly used Banks Sidewinder Turbo Kit to add on. The only issues will be price and Wife, she is not to keen on having a Reg Cab, as we need any truck we have to tow our Travel Trailer whenever we want. Price is also an issue due to the fact we must buy a second vehicle that has 4 doors and be fairly nice. In a perfect world for me, I would love to do a DuraMax swap, tuned down to match up with the 4R80 trans that’s in the truck now, or at least a nice LS/LT Crate Engine. Then get a nice Lance Slide In Truck Camper, with the rear cab window removed and sealed to the Camper, so the dogs could be more comfortable! Oh and add a good A/C system!
Whether it's a ford, a Chevy, or a dodge, all three of them made very reliable old trucks back in the day, and what I like about them is how tough and reliable they are even in today's modern times. They say old cars break but my mom's SUV has been in the shop more than my old ford.
Traindriver844 its called planned obsolescence . the vehicles today much like computers, which technically todays vehicles are glorified computers, they're designed & manufactured to be broken & obsolete within a certain amount of time. best thing i can point to as proof of this, "smart" phones. u buy it get used to it BAMN s8, iphone8, lgv25 etc etc is being released next week
@@DIRTDIVER882 most of the time when I see a phone being replaced is due too either an accident or they just want the new one despite it still working look at base model F250 looks pretty simple and them look at a king ranch, you can choose to have simplicity or loaded with luxuries I like how most work trucks have vinyl seats and rubber floors now easy to clean up

I owned these trucks since I was 16 they were great to me about 10 years ago I bought a Duramax owned it for a little while sold it and bought another one of these a nice little 86 nothing's better than these style trucks
It’s almost like the “egg shape” gets better gas mileage more than a box shape. Aerodynamics are something to think about while making a daily/grocery getter. But if your looking for a box the new trucks are still boxes and also the Dodge Challenger is a box also.
@@melrose9252 Lol have you ever owned one? Mines clean as the day GM made her because it got washed! And the stock 454 in my truck will burn 37 inch tires clean off.
I'm in the process of restoring an 82. Rust has been the problem, after market replacement panels have been a pain in the ass but it's fun those trucks had a feel that new ones don't have
Dime Fever that body style they made the regular cab pickups with single rear wheels from 1973 through 1987, but all the crew cab pickups, Suburbans, & K-5 Blazers, they made from 1973 through 1991. Also if I'm not mistaking I think they still continued making regular cab pickups with dual rear wheels & regular cab 1 ton chassis cabs with both single & dual rear wheels up through 1989.
why can't they just remake and resale this trucks and iron out the few problems they have? they ever remake these trucks and I have the cash to buy one I'll be first in line
4thstooge add a couple alloys into the metal and add some thicker paint and rust won't be a problem for a long time and even with a modern day vehicle (even thou they are mostly plastic) will rust to if you don't take care of them.
381 322 Just might have to do that, and or hopefully I'm the future someone will make a company where they specifically remake these older vehicles brand new for people who don't want the newer garbage. If I ever win the lotto that's what I'll do.
Have the exact same truck and colors as the one in the intro. Bought it for $900 cash hoping it would last for a summer while doing major building renovations - hauling plywood/sheetrock, dump runs etc. That was some years ago and this thing keeps going and going. Random people give me compliments on the truck at Home Depot, lol. Going to keep it because I love it for the hard-working dinosaur it has become. It will haul 2,200 lbs in the bed before the steering gets a little dicey (certified ticket from landfill). Insurance is surprisingly expensive due to lack of safety features I imagine.
I have an 86 and I'm only 31 but I bet some of the younger guys that see this are going to be like "what's a 3 speed manual transmission? " I love these older trucks ,even the Fords and Dodges too.

Back when odometers were 5 digit instead of 6. Today's trucks are better in terms of tech but these trucks look better & id say have tougher bodies (although they had a bad rust issue). Love them old boxy body chevys!!!
I use an '85 k20 silverado as a wood truck. I have tried a few other trucks but always seem to end up back in the k20. I sort of regret working it so hard in part because it has a federal vin so stock it had very little smog. It started life as a US forest service truck.
Id buy one of these new today. It would be awesome if Chevy did a retro year model series. Where the truck is identical to the ones in the 80's but much cheaper now days.
I love the use of the first three seconds of the laserdisc for text "slides" of various sorts. I suppose the disc was programmed to allow stepping through them all? Sony did that and more with their CRV discs 15 years later., running both videos and still graphics from the same disc at their business meetings.
Yes! There's an audio track with programming instructions for the LD player. It built a little quiz where you'd use a phone keypad on the remote to answer questions.

I really miss those trucks. Thats back when the American auto companies really made a good, long lasting truck. They were expensive back then, but no where near the insanity they want for new ones. I would buy one of these trucks in a heart beat over a 2020 truck. ☹
I had a '77 Stepside (same as '83, just different grill). Now that was a basic truck! 250 six/3 on the column.....the only option it had was power steering. I liked it a lot, but eventually it got so rusty I had to junk it. The cab mounts were gone, and the rear fenders on the stepside box were flapping in the breeze
This is just my opinion. I have driven both OBS (94-97) and NBS (99-03) trucks. And the only thing that the 99-03 Super Duty trucks have good in them is the engine and driveline. The NBS trucks body & interior construction feels and looks 20 times thinner and weaker than the OBS trucks. The dadgum hood roof & doors flex when you shut the doors, and they even feel thin.
@@DDFJ1230 it's no doubt that they seem cheaper. If you've ever been around a squarebody chevy though, you'd notice that the metal in the hood is often so weak that it will kink in half. These Chevy's may look nice, but they were really garbage when new. The Fords were just better
I got an 03 2500 with the 6.0 V8 gas and 4x4. I got 210,000 miles on it so far and so far the only problems I’ve had with it are the AC just recently went out, and the 4 low is acting up. Other than that, no problems what so ever

Love the axle ratio and transmission options, wish trucks these days would have that kind of customization
The 80's was the best!
Yea that was a decade .
@@DIRTDIVER882 most of the time when I see a phone being replaced is due too either an accident or they just want the new one despite it still working look at base model F250 looks pretty simple and them look at a king ranch, you can choose to have simplicity or loaded with luxuries I like how most work trucks have vinyl seats and rubber floors now easy to clean up
@@bryanmartinez6600 Ford is pure junk always have been
@@justenough730 a spider injector is a pita took gm too damn long to go to mpfi also gm hardly gives you any damn room to work with pulled the transmission out my Silverado and the top bolt was a pita also the starter wires are between the manifold and the frame can barely get my arm between there also front ends on Chevy are so damn weak the coils look like they came off my Honda Civic
Dan Bouchard bullshit
I've always loved the steel rims on the old school Chevy's since way back when.
I owned these trucks since I was 16 they were great to me about 10 years ago I bought a Duramax owned it for a little while sold it and bought another one of these a nice little 86 nothing's better than these style trucks
really nice too see this promo, this is when we had real cars, not these egg shaped balloons
Abodz A Amen Brother and new vehicles are disposable, overpriced, and look ugly as well.
I don't know if i agree with new cars being disposable, A lot of vehicles in the 70s needed engine rebuilds around a hundred thousand Kilometers.
It’s almost like the “egg shape” gets better gas mileage more than a box shape.
Aerodynamics are something to think about while making a daily/grocery getter.
But if your looking for a box the new trucks are still boxes and also the Dodge Challenger is a box also.
I love the two-toned paint schemes
them old trucks were rugged and tough
Until they had a vacuum leak and ran like trash
Taylor Snyder The bodies were good except for a rust problem but the engines were weak.
@@melrose9252 Lol have you ever owned one? Mines clean as the day GM made her because it got washed! And the stock 454 in my truck will burn 37 inch tires clean off.
I own a 82 Chevy C30 crew cab dually. Best damn truck in the world. Will NEVER get rid of it.
Love these trucks so many options and colors in the interior and exterior and even the trim levels had a name
I'm in the process of restoring an 82. Rust has been the problem, after market replacement panels have been a pain in the ass but it's fun those trucks had a feel that new ones don't have
73-87-91 some of the most sought after chevy trucks!
Dime Fever are they? I didn't know they were that wanted.
I have a 2015 K1500 and Its a nice truck... But I still love driving my 1984 K30 diesel. Just feels like a truck should!
I’m sorry but a 2015 K1500 doesn’t exist.
My 1983 fleetside 8 foot box single cab is the best truck I've ever owned and ill never get rid of my big blue ox
why can't they just remake and resale this trucks and iron out the few problems they have? they ever remake these trucks and I have the cash to buy one I'll be first in line
The Chevy / GMC trucks of this era were rust buckets.
4thstooge add a couple alloys into the metal and add some thicker paint and rust won't be a problem for a long time and even with a modern day vehicle (even thou they are mostly plastic) will rust to if you don't take care of them.
jizzanthapuss maammarata Yep; just add a few more alloys in there, and steel will last forever. Face palm.
Icutmetal yep which is why I'm the smartest of all humans.
381 322 Just might have to do that, and or hopefully I'm the future someone will make a company where they specifically remake these older vehicles brand new for people who don't want the newer garbage. If I ever win the lotto that's what I'll do.
”Some Chevy pickups seem to last forever”
*has 32 year old R10 that still works*
Have the exact same truck and colors as the one in the intro. Bought it for $900 cash hoping it would last for a summer while doing major building renovations - hauling plywood/sheetrock, dump runs etc. That was some years ago and this thing keeps going and going. Random people give me compliments on the truck at Home Depot, lol. Going to keep it because I love it for the hard-working dinosaur it has become. It will haul 2,200 lbs in the bed before the steering gets a little dicey (certified ticket from landfill). Insurance is surprisingly expensive due to lack of safety features I imagine.
I had a 79 gmc half ton 6 cylinder it got 22mpg highway. My 2007 gets 18.
That's great my 2007 gets 17 mpg. But we get 190hp now out of v-6
Still have the '86 K 10 I bought new and never plan to get another truck!!
I just went down my memory lane
Thanks
Have an 82 4x4 3/4 350 Silverado and it still kicks ass!
A real mans truck...if you had "power tailgate" back in the 80s, people would call you a weak sissy and laugh when it breaks almost immediately
I have an 86 and I'm only 31 but I bet some of the younger guys that see this are going to be like "what's a 3 speed manual transmission? " I love these older trucks ,even the Fords and Dodges too.
These truck are great, you will still see them on the road and common
So a truck trim "Silverado" came to be a truck model
yup and that did not happen realy until 1999 before that it was still a Trim level..
Los Ojos De HotSpanish the Silverado trim package came out back in 1975 which replaced the previous Cheyenne Super trim package.
Yeap
@@kevinrichards3288 the cheyenne package stayed around through the early nineties
@@marcusc110 yes the base Cheyenne but I was talking about the Cheyenne Super which was a top of the line trim package that came out back in somewhere from 1969 to 1971 & was replaced by the new top of the line Silverado trim package in 1975.
They looked good with those whitewall tires.
Way better looking trucks than Ford.
Still more Chevys of that era on the road now.
ATXMEX Vato Yup even though "63 out of 100 Ford trucks ever sence 1963 are still on the job" haha, I'd take a Chevy over any Ford any day.
Puro Eastside Vato yeah
99% of the trucks shown here are still regular cabs. 99% of the new trucks you see now are extended, crew, or mega cabs.
Pita to work with a single cab it fills jobsites because everyone has to bring their own. Also if you have delicate tools such as power drills nail guns saws and other tools I toss them in the back so they don't get soaked in rainstorms
Those sound effects around 7:45 remind me of a Scooby Doo cartoon.
Lol
I own a 1986 Silverado. Had it 24 years now. I replaced the tired 305 with a crate 350. Big difference. I'm asked on a daily bases if it's for sale. A/c can't keep up with this texas heat.
Back when odometers were 5 digit instead of 6. Today's trucks are better in terms of tech but these trucks look better & id say have tougher bodies (although they had a bad rust issue). Love them old boxy body chevys!!!
My 87 has 6 digits
I use an '85 k20 silverado as a wood truck. I have tried a few other trucks but always seem to end up back in the k20. I sort of regret working it so hard in part because it has a federal vin so stock it had very little smog. It started life as a US forest service truck.
That part were it said the steel will not rot for a long time that's funny explain that to my cab
A rot hole directly behind the doors toward the bottom...yeah got some of that too >_
"heavily treated to fight corrosion".....for 2 years.
TierodMcslush Me and my dad has a 87’ C10 and it hardly has any rust.
If that. I have an 84 K10 and the only body panel on it that doesn't have a rust hole in it is the hood and it's Not even the original one.
In the east coast with all the road salt they last about 15 minutes
Corvettegirl 1994 you right I got two Silverado’s too and they are clean ✌🏼
Ive got a 86 silverado minimal rust
The 80s must have been so nice
Id buy one of these new today. It would be awesome if Chevy did a retro year model series. Where the truck is identical to the ones in the 80's but much cheaper now days.
I love the use of the first three seconds of the laserdisc for text "slides" of various sorts. I suppose the disc was programmed to allow stepping through them all? Sony did that and more with their CRV discs 15 years later., running both videos and still graphics from the same disc at their business meetings.
Yes! There's an audio track with programming instructions for the LD player. It built a little quiz where you'd use a phone keypad on the remote to answer questions.
Consider this a time machine of past American quality thats now long gone and rare to see preserved.
2:57 That pickup there is either a 1981 or 1982 year model because of the grille & headlamp bezels.
I am a hard core chevy guy ,Chevy has and will be in my family. I am bow tie till I die. I love my 79 and my 78 chevy along bed trucks ,even my 2011 pickup
Love both my 85 C30 Silverado Dually and 86 GMK K2500 High Sierra Square Bodies. Want to add a 3rd Square to the fleet but don't know if I should go for a Suburban or short bed half ton.
I'm 73 an still driving my 83 stepside love it
I have a rust free 85 2wd.owned almost 19 years.I will own it till I die.
Even the 250 -6 banger was badass!!
Roy Miller What was badass about it?
For me it was a reliable diehard work horse, it never backed down from a load I over loaded on the trailer, it didn’t like a lot of them but it got er done abused it till 129000 miles blew a head gasket, then I built a 350 and installed it! Ran it for another 15 yrs! Gave the 6cyl to a friend he worked the head stuck it in a houseboat ‘, as far as I know it’s still tooling up & down Tn. River
Thanks for uploading. It really helps with restorations. :)
Glad it helped!
These trucks are way better than modern day trucks
K J thanks but i prefer the 80s chevy pickup truck cuz it looks sexy
And they looked like trucks, not full of crap like today.
14:00 now that’s what they need to put these new trucks to the test, good ol rough terrain! Not just pebbles and small puddles like today’s truck commercials
15:57 WAS SO BEAUTIFUL WHEN HE SAID FRONT SOLDID AXLE UP FRONT WHY DO I SAY BEAUTIFUL BECAUSE CHEVY DOSENT MAKE STRAIGHT SOLID FRONT AXLES ANY MORE 😭😭😭
I really miss my 83 GMC 3500 dump truck. It was a great little truck .
I really miss those trucks. Thats back when the American auto companies really made a good, long lasting truck. They were expensive back then, but no where near the insanity they want for new ones. I would buy one of these trucks in a heart beat over a 2020 truck. ☹
Back when advertising didn't bullshit you. I love the old school white walls .
This was the 10th anniversary of the 1973-1987 design and it was still going strong in 1983. Too many redesigns nowadays.
Ending in 1991 With Suburban Blazer and Jimmy.
Back when everything was made in the USA
I would love to have one of these trucks. So cool!!
Somebody really had fun with the sound effects there.
Ah I miss a good old fashioned fast forward through the credits
I had a '77 Stepside (same as '83, just different grill). Now that was a basic truck! 250 six/3 on the column.....the only option it had was power steering. I liked it a lot, but eventually it got so rusty I had to junk it. The cab mounts were gone, and the rear fenders on the stepside box were flapping in the breeze
I've got a 84 suburban with the 350 and 3 speed with a granny. 4x4, and I promise you, I will never be selling this truck.
381 322 Nice man!
Excelente camioneta para mí la mejor del segmento. Yo tuve una GMC Sierra V8 modelo 1984 caja larga. Greetings from Guadalajara México.
The good old days before GM started churning out complete pieces of JUNK :/ Ford is the same way
This is just my opinion.
They were kind of junk back then too.
@@DDFJ1230 it's no doubt that they seem cheaper. If you've ever been around a squarebody chevy though, you'd notice that the metal in the hood is often so weak that it will kink in half. These Chevy's may look nice, but they were really garbage when new. The Fords were just better
You sold me I want C/K since forever
5:54
"She's aerodynamic"
About as aerodynamic as a brick! Haha!!
Love these old commercials!
Best trucks ever built
I got an 03 2500 with the 6.0 V8 gas and 4x4. I got 210,000 miles on it so far and so far the only problems I’ve had with it are the AC just recently went out, and the 4 low is acting up. Other than that, no problems what so ever
35 years later, I think they were right - these trucks ended up exceeding expectations - still a usable, durable vehicle in 2018
Late 2019 and I just hauled 2200lbs of roofing to the dump and picked up 40 sheets of OSB on the way back (1983 C10). Love my old truck with working original AM/FM radio cassette. and doors you have to absolutely slam to close properly.
I've seen 4 or 5 over the last decade
I was selling these jewels back then. Even a C-10 was trucky!
Personally I had a C40 and it was a TANK!
I still rock my 1980 c 10 and i love it 😍😍😁😉😊😎🤤🤤😎
Good looking well designed rust buckets.
I owned a 1983 custom deluxe long bed with the blue interior. Truck had a 305 v8. It was not fast , terrible on fuel economy, body was rusting through but the engine was very reliable.
